>> all of a sudden i heard a large explosion. yeah. behind me and the whole house shook and i shook. >> reporter: the impact knocked 85-year-old carmen right out of his chair. he was cut and bruised but alive. he thought there had been an explosion. >> smoke, dust all flying about me and it knocked me right out of the chair. >> reporter: carmen made his way upstairs and had to crawl down a fireman's ladder to safety. his next door neighbor in the twin house was jolted out of bed by the impact. the car burst into flames inside carmen's house. >> within no seconds it just flames like crazy up in the roof. i was like my -- i thought -- within one moment i thought my house is gone, too. i was like wow. >> reporter: everyone got out safely including the driver of the car. police have charged 34-year-old katherine ryan of rhawnhurst with dui and other offenses. carmen says she came into his life at exactly the wrong

time. last week he buried his wife, phyllis, who had been battling cancer for years. >> she got buried on august the fourth at veterans cemetery at newtown. and then four days later -- one, two, 34 -- sunday, yeah, four or five days later this happens. >> reporter: carmen's daughter lisa is just glad she didn't lose her father a week after her mother died. >> i was relieved to see he was awake and alert and talking. the cuts upset me a little bit with the stitches but glad he's okay. >> reporter: carmen says he'll be back to this house but only to pick up his things and a lifetime of memories. he's now moving on to a nursing home. in rhawnhurst, david henry, channel6 "action news." >> lifeguards on long beach island made a save today but this one was on the beach. guards rescued a 12-year-old boy who got buried in the sand. it happened just before 2 o'clock on the beach in surf city. rescuers say the child was

digging in the sand when it caved in on top of him. the child was taken to the hospital. he is in stable condition. a truck got wedged under a tractor-trailer after a crash on i-95 in chester delaware county. the accident happened in the northbound lanes near the melrose avenue overpass at 1:30 this afternoon. emergency crews eventually freed the driver of the pickup who was trapped in the collision. philadelphia police want to question the 18-year-old brother and a friend of a teenager killed last night in southwest philadelphia. police say 16-year-old corey tunnell was shot at 6:45 inside a home on the 6300 block of reedland street. tunnel suffered a gunshot wound to the head. he died an hour later at presbyterian hospital. police are trying to determine if the shooting was a case of teens playing with guns or an intentional killing. pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane who is now an alleged purger railroad

will hold a news conference pens to make her first public comments after being indicted last week. the republican primary. >> reporter: public interest could grow and shift. for now the first democrat and first woman a. g in pennsylvania maintains her innocence. but having the highest law enforcement officer in pennsylvania under a criminal cloud is awkward. george perry a philadelphia attorney and one time prosecutor wonders about the impact on the morale of the ag staff, how kane can do her job while immersed in her defense and what if her office pursues a political corruption case? >> she certainly would open herself up to criticism. maybe people would want to say she's being hypocritical. >> reporter: there's been talk of impeaching kane but experts say that's unlikely. there's also discussion of rule 208 that due to egregious conduct can be used to temporarily suspend an attorney's law license something the ag must have. perry explained how that might apply. >> the supreme court, if it wandered, could suspend her law license during the pendency of these criminal

charges cha and if they suspends her law license then she as a matter of constitutional law would become unqualified to hold the office of attorney general. >> reporter: well, should that 208 process, that rule 208 process take place it would be confidential we're told at least initially. the associated press reporting today that a supreme court official refused to say if a complaint had been filed in that matter. in the meantime, as you said, jim, the attorney general is to break her silence about all of this come wednesday. should be as we say a possibly lively situation there in harrisburg. live in norristown, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, john. emergency repairs were made today to fix a sinkhole that opened up in center city philadelphia. the hole showed up at 15th street near chestnut sometime overnight. philadelphia streets department is blocking the hole with traffic cones and barricades while crews work to solve the problem. one lane is opened for traffic on 15th street so you can expect slow going in the area.

>> ♪ temple university has joined the list of schools to close down when the pope comes to philadelphia. university officials have canceled classes on friday september 25th. community college of philadelphia, drexel university, the university of pennsylvania and rutgers camden also plan to close. villanova university has asked instructors to hold classes online. or reschedule them. all kinds of people are making contingency plans for the pope's visit for all kinds of reasons and that would includes having a baby. "action news" medical reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is live at the hospital of the university of pennsylvania. ali, there are some things that don't easily lend themselves to a plan b. >> reporter: that's right, jim, and most cases you can't plan exactly when a baby will arrive. but for women who are expected to deliver sometime around the

pope's visit, well, they are trying to plan all possible scenarios. >> he's having a great time sort of making room for the baby. >> reporter: nicole says the nursery is ready and the family including two-year-old anthony is excited for the new baby. but there are some concerns because the baby is due during the papal visit. >> how i'm going get to the hospital, how my in laws and family members and spouse are going to be able to visibility nicole and her husband live in collingswood, new jersey. her doctor is at pennsylvania hospital. under normal circumstances, it's a quick commute. but when the pope visits the ben franklin bridge will be closed. dr. debra driscoll is chair of penn medicine's ob/gyn department. she says they're close to finalizing plans and specifications. >> we want everyone to stay calm. we've been preparing for this for over a month now. >> reporter: she says each family will have a detailed contingency plan. >> we'll be looking at

>> this was one thrill these rollercoaster riders were not seeking today. an unidentified problem forced the conductor to stop the talon rollercoaster at dorney park this morning. an "action news" viewer sent us this video of passengers walking down the side to evacuate. officials say a warning light came on as the car approached a hill and because of rainy whether they decided to evacuate instead of troubleshoot the problem. a good idea because nobody was hurt. when you see breaking news or weather we invite you to

join the action. just e-mail your photographs and videos to join the action at 6abc.com or use the hashtag 6abc action on social media. philadelphia police are still looking for a man behind a craigslist scam. and now police say more victims have come forward. police say that 44-year-old harry moore has duped at least 10 people who are interested in renting his apartment in west oak lane. according to police, moore lists his property on fayette street to rent but once he gets the deposit he allegedly tells people the apartment is no longer available and then refuses to refund their money. police are still trying to track him down. so, how do you plan to celebrate your 85th birthday? well, the chances are you won't do this. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has the story. >> reporter: it's a bird, it's a plane, no, that's 85-year-old charles paret of delran free falling through the skies over south jersey

recently after jumping out of a plane at 12,000 feet. >> it was great. it's hard to explain. it's a thrill. >> reporter: with an experienced diver from freefall ah adventures in williamstown guiding him charles a retired mechanical engineer made his jump with two grandchildren on a whim. he says he tried to take it all in as he plummeted to earth. >> i actually -- the freefall was -- i thought it was bumpy. a lot of turbulence after the power chute opened we looked all around. he maneuvers it all around so you can see the whole countryside sim as some people think an 85-year-old must be a little bit crazy to want to jump out of the a plane but charles says he hasn't lost his sense of adventure and he hasn't lost his mind. >> it was on my bucket list. it's something i wanted to done finally got to do it. >> reporter: charles has been married to terri for 64 years. do you think he's crazy? >> yeah . >> [laughter] >> definitely. >> reporter: how come? >> because he's 85 years old and he shouldn't be doing

>> we have some turbulent weather coming in. >> we do need the rain but the problem is it could cause a lot of problems for the morning commute tomorrow. storm tracker6 showing we have a few sprinkles here or there. nothing organized. it's cloudy. it's muggy. and the accuweather highlights will show you that it's cool today considering it's august. the high in philadelphia only hit 79 degrees. that's 7 degrees below the average high for this time of the year. the first time since the fourth of july when temperatures have not climbed out of the 70's. the fourth of july our high was only 77 degrees. now i'm tracking some heavy downpours that will be moving

through in the overnight hours and could get another round of some scattered downpours in the afternoon. future tracker showing tomorrow total when you add the morning rain with the afternoon rain, we're looking at more than an inch of rain, perhaps even 2-inches the the shore so this is going to be a soaking and it could cause some localized flooding early tomorrow morning. right now temperatures holding in the 70's. 76 degrees in philadelphia. trenton 78. millville 75. sea isle city 76 and reading 72 degrees. and dewpoints generally in the mid 60's with the winds off the ocean. satellite6 along with action radar showing what i'm watching overnight is a warm front that will be moving through and this right now is just over cleveland heading towards washington, d.c. and this does have a lot of moisture associated with it. also when it moves through, it will be interacting with what's known as the low level jet. it's a ribbon of air about 5,000 feet in the atmosphere. what this does, it adds moisture, it adds lift so this

can really enhance the storm. so future tracker showing 5 o'clock tomorrow morning don't be surprised if you hear that rumble of thunder with some very heavy downpours. around 7:30 the downpours reaching the coast, still some isolated downpours around philadelphia then we get a break in the action around lunchtime with a few breaks of sunshine but then a cold front moves through late in the day tomorrow and this likely will trigger another round of some heavy downpours and some storms. so, there are really two key times, between 2 o'clock in the morning and 8 o'clock in the morning tomorrow, a solid band of thunderstorms with heavy downpours, with localized flooding. between one and 7 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and evening, some scattered thunderstorms and the risk for these is that a few of those could have strong damaging wind gusts. it's going to be a very active day tomorrow. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow when we're in the warm sector of the storm, it will be very humid with dewpoints in the 70's. our afternoon high back up into the 80's. 82 degrees, some scattered

thunderstorms working through late in the afternoon and early in the evening. behind that cold front, though, wednesday a breath of fresh air. sunshine with a few clouds bubbling up in the afternoon. the high 85 degrees. and i really think the pick of the week will be thursday. low humidity, gorgeous sunshine, comfortable with a high of 83 degrees. on friday, we'll begin to warm things up with a high of 87 degrees. still a good amount of sunshine and saturday is our next chance of some thunderstorms, probably not widespread, isolated as a front slips through. it will be warm ahead of that system and humid, 89 degrees. sunday for the eagles preseason game, it will be sunny and warm, 88 degrees and monday here comes the heat. sunny with an afternoon high up to 90 degrees. the heat will be returning early next week and i'll have an update on the timing of the storms on "action news" at 11:00. >> thank you cecily. the mann's young people concert series came to an end today with students showcasing history through art.
