it's tuesday, august 11th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good tuesday morning. i'm phillip mena in for t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. we'll begin again with another night of tension in ferguson, missouri. a state of emergency one year after the diego of michael brown. >> police were out in full force overnight bracing for more violence as hundreds of people lingered in the streets and followed a day of clashes, dozens of arrests. and a shooting the night before. abc's jim ryan has been watching it all unfold. he joins us now live. good morning, jim. >> reporter: hello. after a demonstration punctuated by gunfire and an 1-year-old was shot and critically injured by the police, another crowd gathered here tonight on west florissant avenue. it was almost a festival atmosphere with protesters socializing and occasionally lobbing insults at the officers lined up just across the street.

someone threw what the police say were frozen water bottles and rocks. about a dozen people were taken into custody. things have quieted down again. occasionally you see it start to pick back up. the atmosphere calms and this ebb and flow is lasting throughout the evening hours now into the early morning. and no reports of anybody seriously injured. but about a dozen people taken into custody. phillip, reena. >> who is out there hanging out right now? there's ebbs and flows of people. who's out there right now? >> reporter: it's mainly young people out here at this point. before it was a multigenerational crowd of older people, even some children here with their families. now it's primarily late teens, maybe 20-year-olds on this side of florissant avenue. the police officers on the opposite side of the street. >> on sunday before the violence broke out, there were causes for a day of civil disobedience. did you see anything in na regards throughout the day?

>> yes, there were more than 50 people ep taken into custody. they were standing outside the courthouse in st. louis. they refused to move. some of them were religious leader who's spilled oil onto the sidewalk. they said they were anointing that building. they were taken into custody. that remains a peaceful demonstration there. >> there's still no curfew enforced. a year ago they had curfews in place. is there calls for that to happen. >> no, there's no curfew at this point. some people think it might be a good idea. at this point, all the emergency order that was put into place today does to place control of law enforcement in this community and surrounding communities with the county police department. and the county police chief. so that's really all that's done abc's jim ryan reporting live from ferguson, missouri. thank you so much. stay with abc news as we monitor the unrest in st. louis area. look for updates all morning long on "america this morning"

authorities are hoping to avoid a repeat of violence that brought back painful memories of rioting last year. >> multiple shots fired. >> shots fired. >> reporter: after nightfall, gunfire shattered the calm of sunday's peaceful protests. >> anybody hit on this side? >> we just want to be as patient as possible. >> reporter: even catching ferguson's interim police chief off guard. 18-year-old tyrone harris was shot and critically wounded when police say they returned fire after harris shot at them. >> last night was pretty out of control at times. >> reporter: more protests at the federal courthouse in st. louis. police made more than 50 arrests. despite minor scuffles, the demonstrators were peaceful. >> this is what community looks like. >> reporter: police at the scene of rioting and looting. this beauty parlor was ransacked in last year's violence and again. >> you have to keep going. failure is not an option.

>> reporter: as police are standing by, it looks like the unrest may continue with another long night ahead. gyp ryan, abc news, ferguson, missouri. turning to the fatal police shooting of an unarmed teen in texas. 19-year-old college football player christian taylor seen here breaking a car windshield at a dealership in arlington. taylor's brother said he is not angry with police but he questioned the use of deadly force. there were no cameras in the show room where taylor was shot and officers in arlington don't have body cameras. police are promising a thorough investigation. in wisconsin, two 13-year-olds girls in the slender man case will be tried as adults. the girls were just 12 when they were accused of stabbing a classmate 19 times in an effort to please a fictional online character. the judge says he worried the girls would stop receiving mental health treatment and be released in five years with no supervision. if convicted in adult court, they could face up to 65 years in prison.

>> the ntsb meets today to investigate the cause of the accident that injured tracy morgan and killed his friend. the walmart driver was speeding at the time. he also hadn't slept in more than 24 hours morgan and two others who survived setted with walmart for an undisclosed apartment. this story is something many of us can relate to at this hour. air traffic controllers admitting that he make mistakes because they're tired. they average just over 5 1/2 hours an of sleep a day and more than six in ten admitted losing focus on fall agsleep while commuting to the midnight shift. an airliner packed with passengers struck by a heavy hailstorm. abc's david kerley has the pictures. >> reporter: all this damage, remarkable evidence of the wild ride for this delta a-320. >> we are having a hard time here. our windshield is pretty severely damaged. >> reporter: in fact, nearly impossible to see forward.
