sprinkler on a fire hydrant to beachgoers hoping for a cool ocean breeze at the jersey shore. the sights and sounds of heat wave number four. and we have live team coverage this evening. reporter chad pradelli has more on efforts to stay cool but let's begin with meteorologist cecily tynan outside with the latest from accuweather. cecily. >> hi, rick and the heat certainly has been building for the past three days. on saturday the high 91 degrees. yesterday 93 and today the high climbed up to 94 degrees in philadelphia. the average high for this time of the year is 86 and the record high is 96 so only 2 degrees shy of the record high and this shows that it was really hot across our entire viewing area. reading hitting 93 for the high. trenton 94. wilmington 91. even in wildwood, 90 degrees before that sea breeze kicked in dropped temperatures into the low 80's. now, storm tracker6 live double scan showing the one cell we have with some heavy downpours right over northeast philadelphia. it's just drifting to the southeast.

heaviest rain over grant avenue and rhawn street and this area has received about an inch of rain already. so, a flood advisory has been posted for northeast philadelphia, also parts of montgomery and bucks county until 9:15. so, if you do encounter any flooded roads definitely go another day. now storm tracker6 a wider view double scan live showing that there's a lot of activity to our south and west and that will be moving our way by the middle of the week. that will bring an end to the heat wave and bring us some showers and thunderstorms. i'll have more details on that coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick. >> all right, cecily, thank you. now let's check in with reporter chad pradelli who is live at eakins oval with the hot weather story from people who had to be outside today and were certainly doing their best to sweat less. chad. >> reporter: yeah, they were doing their best and there may be some relief on the way right now. if you look behind me there are some dark clouds, maybe a possible shower. cecily would know more about that. right now a little bit of a light breeze. it doesn't feel too bad at this moment but earlier today it was brutal and fountains

like this were the refuge. eight month old everett and his other pint sized buddies didn't seem to mind the heat this morning as they crawled and played in the fountains at the sisters city park. >> they're trying to cool off on this nice day. it's a little hot. he's enjoying the water. >> i like to get out early get in the water, get some exercise and sun and get home for nap time. [laughter] >> reporter: the fountains of logan circle were also popular today. but for many across our region there's no escaping the heat. when you have to pay the bills on a day like today does it make work miserable. >> little bit but we need the money so i sweat. >> reporter: as the sun baked center city mohammed haw was preparing for a day inside his food truck. by noon it was already 110 degrees inside. the fans did little but such is life in the mobile food industry. >> little hot and the wintertime it's too cold. >> reporter: you can never

report two of children being left in a hot car. this as temperatures soared into the 90's today. happened outside of a home depot distribution center in upper macungie township. no word yet on the conditions of the children or how long they were inside that car. a person was rushed to the hospital after they were injured in a house fire in chester county. the fire started just before 1:00 this afternoon in the 100 block of hannum mill road in london grove township. "action news" has been told that the person was trapped and had to be pulled out by firefighters. no word on the victim's condition. fire officials are still trying to determine how the blaze started. a firefighter was injured while responding to a call herely in montgomery county today. the firefighter was hit by a vehicle while crossing the road here on the 1800 block of swamp pike in gilbertsville 678 this was the scene from chopper six at around 11:30 this morning. officials say the firefighter was responding to an elevator rescue when he was hit. he was taken to lehigh valley hospital. his condition not yet clear. the person trapped in the elevator was freed and is

doing okay tonight. philadelphia congressman chaka fattah scheduled to make his first appearance in federal court tomorrow. but today fattah requested action from congress to ensure that there was no prosecutorial misconduct in the case against him. fattah sent a letter asking that material related to the case be preserved. he wants the case reviewed for "unconstitutional or unlawful behavior." fattah says he's innocent of all charges and plans to run for a 12th term next year. we are little more than a month away until pope francis arrives in philadelphia. everyone is counting down and preparing for what will be the biggest spiritual event to ever grace our region. and as we get ready for the pope to visit our hometown "action news" anchor jim gardner is spending the week in his. jim is live in buenos aires exploring the places that formed pope francis' views and his faith.

jim, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, rick and welcome to buenos aires argentina, a city of almost 3 million people, chaotic traffic. ever present graffiti. disdain for politicians and extraordinary energy. until march 13th, 2013, the most recognizable names this country had produce were there probably evita peron and she died in 1952 and soccer superstar lionel messy but on that day in march 2013, everything changed. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: that was the day that this city's archbishop jorge bergoglio was elected pope and took on the name france after francis of assisi. >> well, there it is. >> reporter: and this was the house where jorge was born on december 17, 1936. jorge was the first of five siblings born to tat italian immigrant parents. i took a tour of his neighborhood called flores and

stood outside his first school where he attended kindergarten. his father mario and mother regina both worked outside the house. so it was jorge's grandmother rosa who effectively raised him and who would be an enormous influence in his life. rosa was the first to tell young jorge that compassion should take precedence over judgment and that it was essential to find the best in others. those are two of the pillars of francis' papacy and two of the reasons francis is seen as bringing a new culture to the vatican. bergoglio's parents moved to a new neighborhood not far away, a neighborhood of cobblestones and quiet streets. this is the church where he received his first communion and this was his new house where his siblings would be born. >> this was where bergoglio and his buddies played soccer all day when they were six, seven, 89 years old. now it's a park for children near bergoglio's house.

this was the house two doors down where at 13 he would fall in love with amalia delmon at any. he wrote her a letter saying if he didn't become a priest he would marry her. she died last january but we talked to her grandson marios. [speaking foreign language] >> reporter: he confirmed that his grandmother's father ripped up that letter from young jorge down the block but he said his grandmother always described her friendship with bergoglio as beautiful and pure. jorge's mother and father wanted their son to be a doctor and he didn't tell them about his increasing interest in another kind of calling. this was the scene of bergoglio's epiphany. he was supposed to meet some friends a couple blocks away at the subway stop but he decided to stop here at san jose de flores churchly he went in to macon petition and itoto make confession.it was tho

>> police in chester county searching for several good samaritans who helped rescue a young girl. the seven-year-old was critically injured during a car crash yesterday on the route 30 bypass in caln township. she was thrown from the vehicle and landed on top of her. bypassers saw the crash scene and got out to help. they were able to lift the car off of her. investigators want to recognize the people who helped out. the driver and three other children in the car were not seriously injured. philadelphia police need the public's help tonight in finding this 12-year-old girl. myasia mcfar lands was reported missing about 5:10 last evening.

she was last seen at her home in the germantown section of philadelphia. police say myasia suffers from bipolar disorder. you're asked to call police if you have any information on her whereabouts. in center city thousands of music fans braved heat and humidity for a wondrous moment a free concert from stevie wonder he was in town singing some of this popular hits outsides of city hall but there was a method to his music. this was a big promotional tour and reporter sarah bloomquist is live from dillworth park tonight with the story. sarah. >> reporter: hey there, rick. you see behind me they've already broken down the stage. stevie wonder is already on his way to new york city where he'll perform a pop-up concert in central park tonight. hundreds if not thousands turned out for this surprise concert here in dillworth park. as stevie wonder announced he'll be back playing at the wells fargo sent this fall. >> hello, philadelphia, i'm so happy to be here. >> reporter: and philadelphia was thrilled to welcome the legendary stevie wonder for a pop-up concert here on dillworth park in front of city hall. it was a complete surprise and a treat for fans who got to hear some favorites for free. >> ♪ >> reporter: word of the concert spread throughout the morning on social media. >> it was on a facebook post. i stopped everything and came here. >> reporter: by 3 o'clock in the afternoon hundreds stood shoulder to shoulder on the south side of the park near a small stage to see the legendary performer do his thing. it was a promotional stop as wonder announced he'll be returning to philadelphia for a concert date at the wells fargo center on october 7th. >> it's amazing. i mean, it couldn't happen on a better day. we're here celebrating my mom's birthday and it's been amazing experience for her e the heat was intense. this woman was transported by paramedics when she became overwhelmed.

others say they didn't mind a little sun and sweat and they got to see stevie. >> an experience you you can never miss out on. >> reporter: now, stevie wonder performed a pop-up concert in washington, d.c. this morning, came to philly and again he's in central park tonight. now tickets go on sale for his upcoming philadelphia concert at the wells fargo center on august 21st at 10:00 a.m. live in dillworth park, i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news." rick. >> all right, sarah, thank you. a new art installation went up today at lasalle university's art museum. the exhibit called up against the wall features work by faculty artists. the eighth eighth annual display includes paintings and sculptures. the exhibit opens on wednesday and runs through september 18th.

>> a lot possible pleased about concerning the eagles without their starting quarterback starting running back and two key line backers they beat the colts yesterday 36-10. matt barclay and tim tebow stated their case to be number three quarterback. reserve running back barnard turned heads with this 92-yard punt return for a touchdown at the end of the first half. after two weeks of practice, chip kelly was pleased to get an opportunity to see these guys in action. >> the one thing you don't know about any of those guys is what are they going to be like until you get them into a game. that's the encouraging thing. sometimes guys stand out in practice. that's been history and all of a sudden you get in the game and they're not the same player and then other guys that weren't so good standing out in practice stand out in the game. just from before you get a chance to look at the film some of those guys stepped up and made that plays. >> espn's sal pal tone no, sir lends us his insight on the state of the birds.

here's sal's spin. >> nfl coaches will tell you preseason is not about judgment it's about evaluation so let's make some. against the colts the eagles played inspired energetic enthusiastic football. they were prepared and they were motivated and believe me, i covered a lot of games in the preseason in week one. i did not see it across-the-board. i asked chip kelly about it and he said the reason is depth. we have a lot of guys competing for roster spots. you know what, it shows: the preseason is also about showing up and making plays when you have a chance when you have the ball in your hands and we saw it from three young players that chip kelly brought in in the off season. rookie wide receiver nelson aguilar, not only did he make the catch in a high ball from mark sanchez but then he outran the secondary to the ends zone and then eric row punching that ball out and causing the fumble as the eagles recovered and running back barnard.

let's spin this thing forward. this coming week is all about one guy, quarterback sam bradford. the baltimore ravens are coming into town for joint practices on wednesday, thursday and friday and then a game right here on saturday. i caught up with jason kelce in the locker room after the game. the eagles center who is basically the leader of the team on offense and he told me bradford we won't know about him, he said, until he takes that first hit and then he'll say to himself you know what, i can do this. for channel six i'm sal paolantonio, espn. baseball phillies are off. tomorrow they host toronto. as of this moment chase utley is still a philly but the trade rumors are still there. former flyer danny briere announced his retirement from the nhl. he and the flyers will hold a press conference tomorrow morning. briere had a 17 year professional career, six with the flyers. the soon to be 38-year-old says it's time to spend more time with the family, he got a few boys who play hockey.

southeast but right now we're looking at just some rain, no lightning and it's not nearly as heavy as about a half an hour ago. it is though throwing off a lot of clouds. sky6, temple university sky6 camera showing dark clouds right now over the city from that cell and that actually is pretty well come because it was hot especially when you factor in the heat index and the sunshine but today's high in philadelphia 94 degrees. allentown 93. trenton 94. all of these temperatures within 2 degrees of the record high for this date. wilmington 91 degrees. if you're on the beaches, wow you've picked a great week for that because temperatures a lot cooler with that sea breeze. sea isle city the high only 81 degrees. right now the heat index makes it feel like 96 degrees in philadelphia. feels like 94 in allentown, 88 degrees in millville and it feels like 93 in wilmington and the heat will be on again one more day tomorrow. satellite6 along with action radar showing except for that

one cell over northeast philadelphia, we're looking at just some clouds here there are but we did have a good amount of sunshine during the day but if we broad 10 this view you can see there's a consider moving across the midwest and that fronts is moving at a snail's pace and what this is helping do is really erupt heat and humidity and the storms from the south and this will all be moving in by the middle of the week. so, much needed rain on the way. tonight, though, a warm and sticky night, an early pop-up thunderstorm possible an isolated one, 67 in the cooler suburbs, 76 for center city. so, a very muggy night and tomorrow the heat is on one more day. hazy, hot and humid with a high of 93 degrees. could have an isolated thunderstorm popping up in the afternoon but most of the activity will wait until the middle of the week. this is when that cold front will get closer. we'll pull up some of the storms from the south so 87 degrees on wednesday. the heat wave will be over. some scattered showers and thunderstorms. most active team period will be thursday into friday as that cold front finally slips

through. if you are on the beaches tomorrow, the ocean temperature has cooled off to 67 degrees. some upwell. lots of sunshine with that sea breeze so a lot cooler than inland for the high of 82 degrees down the shore. don't forget the sunscreen tomorrow. you'll need it. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, we have more heat and humidity on the way tomorrow with a high of 93 degrees. and again a lot like today, we could have an isolated thunderstorm popping up in the afternoon. on wednesday with winds out of the south-southeast the clouds roll in, really takes the edge off the heat ending the heat wave, 87 degrees but it will be very muggy with the possibility of some scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. thursday as the front moves right over us, we'll have numerous downpours and some thunderstorms, a very active day with a high of 85 degrees and friday still unsettled with some lingering showers and thunderstorms depending on how quick that will front moves through and a high of 84 degrees. heading into the weekend, though, we dry things out. partly sunny on saturday with a high of 86 degrees.

association the weather looking pretty nice for the eagles preseason game at the linc on saturday evening. sunday also pretty decent, sun mixing with clouds and a high of 88 and monday we begin to get warmer with a high of 89 degrees so one more very hot day and then some much needed rain on the way with an end to the heat wave. >> all right cecily thank you. abc's world news tonight with david muir is next here on channel six.
