while today then took another steep dive just an hour ago and take a look at the numbers right now. the dow down 402 points. the nasdaq down 131 points and s & p 500 down 58 points. now, as we take a live look at the closing bell you can bet all this drama today has many folks like you and me worried and watching. >> yes, i did see the headlines and immediately i was thinking oh my poor 401k. >> reporter: a at water cooler the it was the buzz. from 9:30 to 9:40 the dow plunged 1,000 points then gained considerably. at 11:35 it was in the red by only 484 points laid down less than 200 points. >> it was a big rollercoaster especially coming off of friday where it dropped 500 so, yeah, we're watching our money. we're really concerned. >> reporter: but while some people saw cause for concern, others saw opportunity.

>> it's a great time to buy. stocks are down. so, you know, i'm looking forward to it going back up and seeing a great investment in the future. >> i saw it as an opportunity. i mean, ever since it winds down so quickly, i just went out and buy as much as i can. >> reporter: what's the right reaction? financial experts tell us do not panic. >> they should sit back take a look, listen to the experts and find out what's causing this and what they're going to see is that this is a temporary issue. >> reporter: the heavy selling around the globe was sparked by fear that is china's economy is falling dramatically and many u.s. companies and investors are worried how a slow down there could affect production and trade here. >> china number one devalued their currency last week which is a surprise move. number two it's the world's seconds largest economy. >> reporter: let's put this into perspective. the dow took a nose dive by 22.6. today the dow was only down

6.6 percent at its worst point. first inn this were a true black monday like 1987 the dow would have fallen 3700 points today, not a thousand. now let's show you the closing numbers today. 584.59 down on the dow, the nasdaq in the red by 180 points and s & p 577 points down. also keep in mind those stocks have gained 200 percent in the past six years. the plunge in the past few days has erase add mere 11 percent of those gains so worrisome, i know it looks scary when you look at the board but no reason to really panic. back to you guys. >> nydia, thank you. we are also following breaking news right now in new york city. where a bus just slammed into a building. the fire department says seven people were hurt in this crash in queens and you can see the major damage to the building coming up. the victims went to several different hospitals in the area. take a look at the damage there. we'll bring you more information on this story from new york city as soon as it becomes more available to us.

>> pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane is in court right now. this time, though, sitting at the defense table. today's hearing in norristown deals with charges that kane leaked confidential information as part of a political vendetta. chad pradelli is following this story for us live outside of the courthouse. chad. >> reporter: shar wreaks this preliminary hearing is running more than three hours long and still ongoing. attorney general kathleen kane is charged with perjury, obstruction of justice and other related charges and later today here in the next hour or two, the judge is expected to decide whether the case will be held for trial. led by her twin sister attorney general kathleen kane quickly mid her way into the montgomery county courthouse wearing a red dress she said nothing as she faced perjury and other offenses. montgomery county assistant attorney general kevin steel's first witness was special agent david piper of the attorney general's office.

he testified he presented to attorney general kane grand jury documents at her request prior to a news report detailing those documents. kane is accused of illegally leaking the grand jury files and lying during a subsequent investigation of her. testimony also revealed that kane authorized the release of the files in the name of transparency. prosecutors allege kane released the files and was motivated by her dislike of frank fina a former prosecutor in the attorney general's office. then at odds over a corruption investigation into philadelphia democrats. kane squashed the investigation and hindered at racism on fina's part. after leaving the ag's office and going to the philadelphia district attorney's office, fina and d.a. seth williams reopened the case. prosecutors allege kane then released secret grand jury files to smear fina regarding an investigation aimed at then philadelphia naacp head j

wyatt mondesire. mondesire has never been charged and he's denied wrongdoing. kathleen kane showed little emotion inside the courtroom. one of her aides patrick reese is also charged in this case but he's being tried separately. i'm live in norristown, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." rick. >> chad, thank you. a truck driver had to be cut out of the wreckage of a crash today in bucks county. chopper six was over the scene on route 113 and callowhill road in hilltown township. that's where the crash happened just afternoon today. we're working to find out exactly what happened here but we know it involved a dump truck and another vehicle. you can see the dump truck ended up on its side. we're still trying to find out the name of the truck driver and just how badly he was hurt. >> brand new at 4:00 police say three murderers are off the streets of philadelphia. responsible, though, for four separate homicides this year. authorities say tyree garasol shot a plan in the back of the head in may then shot another man in the head earlier this

month. they say they caught him last thursday and charged him with two counts of murder. 27-year-old tyrese peel is also charged with murder today. police say he killed a plan on south 53rd street back on august 15th. officers caught up with peel on yesterday. and eckel jones is accused of killing one man and shooting another on east sharp neck street. that happened back on july 27th. police were able to take him down on friday. >> from our new jersey news room, police say an attempted robbery ended with three people shot on the street in trenton today. happened just before 3:30 this morning here at the intersection of washington street and roebling avenue. police say two men with guns walked up to a group of four people and tried to rob them. the suspects started shooting into the group. happy to people were shot and are in the hospital. the fourth was not hurt. police have not told us the names of anyone involved and it is still look -- and they are still looking for the shooters. >> time for our first check of the accuweather forecast. >> meteorologist adam joseph back from vacation with a nice word on the as we start the

work week. >> hi, adam. >> welcome back. >> came back and that humidity is back in full force as well especially what it was like here over the weekend. it's warm, it's muggy, but again, not like it has been this august. no 90's on the board right now. take a look at the numbers. 87 in philadelphia. 86 in reading as well as wilmington but that sea breeze going to work at the shore for folks down there, upper 70's to low 80's but no matter where you are, those dewpoints are bounced back up to the humid level of 65 in philadelphia, on the verge of oppressive in dover at 70 degrees. 66 in reading and mount pocono a dewpoint of 64. and with that increase in humidity and a cold front approaching, you can see a line of broken showers and thunderstorms. not a lot of lightning, only 69 within this entire view across four or five states. it's very hit or miss. so as we go through the evening hours, not everyone will get hit by a downpour or thunderstorm. it will be warm, though, it's a 81 at 7 o'clock and any time between 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock there could be

play book for you right now at 6abc.com/pope. that's also where you can find jim gardner's week long series of reports from argentina and more on our area's preparation for the pope's visit. >> students at west chester university headed back to class today amid concerns over a health scare on campus. last week traces of the legionella bacteria were discovered in the hot water systems of nine buildings. that bacteria can lead to navy fair's disease a team of newspaper monica. students tell "action news" they were aware of the problems but were confident the university handled it. >> i got e-mails about it. they said they handled it all. i wasn't nervous about it. >> everybody seems to be either putting it aside and everything and just heading to class. >> overt weekend the university shut off hot water in those affected buildings to sanitize the systems and kill the bacterial the water has since been turned back on. the university is now working with a water management company to develop a long term safety plan. >> it's dime now to get a

check o time now to get a check of the "action news" traffic report. >> lots of activity around those college campuses these days. in east falls all of the philadelphia university students are back in class. watch out for extra traffic associated with those schools back in session. extra traffic on the schuylkill eastbound side headed towards center city, we have a broken down vehicle that they just got pushed off to the side. you see penndot is there helping out. the lanes are opened but it's definitely heavy. really in both directions here along 76. about a 10 minute delay either way you're traveling between the blue route and the vine. have an issue on 476, the northeast extension this afternoon its a vehicle fire on the southbound side a few miles south of the lansdale interchange. vial out ointerchange. right lane is out of commission. speeds in the teens as you head towards mid-county. you might be better off over on 309 southbound instead of the northeast extension

southbound this afternoon. a crash with a downed pole and wires in hammonton blocking the white horse pike at moss mill road. if you would like to use the a.c. expressway speeds in the mid 60's. no complaints on that front. complaining with just 11 miles an hour in christiana on the southbound side of highway one at 273. have a crash there taking out a lane. as you pass the christiana mall you're in a sea of traffic. let's grab the ipad do the commuter report on this back to work monday afternoon. we had construction most of the weekend and we have it again this afternoon. at least for the rest of the week here along the delaware memorial bridge seeing slow going and a vehicle stopped on the road as a result. and we'll check it again, rick and sharrie, coming up in the next half hour. >> thanks, matt. >> still ahead, will he or won't he? what vice president joe biden did this weekend that some say could tell us if he plans to run for president. >> an honor for heroes. four people including three americans who stopped an attack on a train in france tell their story. and receive that country's highest award. >> and it's a national job

>> ♪ >> the four men who stopped an attack on a train in france were honored for their bravery today. french president francois hole s hollande presented them the legion of honor award. it includes three american friends and a british businessman. the men wrestled him to the ground took his weapon and then tied him up. >> just amazed and i really appreciate the honor that i've been given and being given this -- this recognition of what we did but i really don't know whether i deserve this. i think what i would like to do is try to really do honor to what is being given me. >> the group also treated

another american who was shot during the fight. that man mark moogalian will also receiver the legion of honor medal when he receivers the hospital. the suspect's lawyer says his client is not a terrorist and was only planning to rob the passengers. >> vice president joe biden held a weekend meeting that has analysts guessing he may be running for president after all. biden left his vacation on saturday to come back to washington for a private meeting with massachusetts senator elizabeth warren. she's a liberal icon and her support could be key in the democratic primary. so far she has not endorsed anyone and she says the race is still wide open. >> i want to see all of the presidential candidates lay out where they stand on key issues. >> meanwhile a recent poll shows frontrunner hillary clinton could be feeling the effects of her e-mail scandal. it shows only 37 percent of the people polled call clinton honest and trustworthy. 58 percent say they trust biden.

the vice president is expected to make his decision come next month. >> well, leaders of north and south korea have reached an agreement that could prevent the war and it came after a marathon of negotiations. today was the third day of talks between the two countries. south korea's president says the north apologized for a land mine attack that injured two soldiers. in exchange the south will stop blasting propaganda over a loudspeaker across the demilitarized zone. both countries have been looking for a way to avoid war but also safe face. the south said earlier in the day that the north is continuing to move troops and submarines to the border. there's no word if those troops have pulled back. firefighters from australia and new zealand have arrived in the pacific northwest to help fight wildfires there. about 70 international firefighters landed in idaho today to collect protective gear before heading out to the front lines. at least 16 major fires are burning in idaho right now. that's more than any other state. in southern california, another wildfire is

threatening at least 400 homes. the flames are burning dangerously close to a popular ski resort east of los angeles. officials are using water cannons normally used to make snow in the wintertime to keep flames -- keep back the flames from the property. >> looking for a job? chipotle says it wants to hire 4,000 people in a single day. the company announced a national career day coming up on september 9th. management teams at every u.s. chipotle will hold opener views for up to 60 people. chipotle already employs more than 60,000 and the company says 10,000 of those have been promoted in the last year. the career day will focus on entry level positions. >> from our delaware news room now students in one of the first state's biggest districts went back to school today. the action cam was at eisenberg elementary here in new castle this morning. it's part of the colonial school district where today was the first time day for some kindergarteners and all students from first to ninth

grade. the superintendent was there to welcome everyone back to class. colonial district also gave out school supplies today, something it has done every year for the last 35 years. >> time now to get another check of the forecast and see what's happening with accuweather. >> all right, meteorologist adam joseph and maybe the umbrellas late tonight. >> yeah, in a few spots. right now as we look at double scan live radar most of us are in the drive. any of those isolated downpours or showers are still west of our viewing area. west of lancaster near harrisburg and pottsville and you can see it's not a definitive line. it's very broken in nature and that's the way it will remain throughout the evening and overnight hours. but we look live on sky6 right now. you can see some folks enjoying the surf there about 3-foot swells pushing in. live in atlantic city lots of sunshine and the shore points packed this particular week as we're getting closer to the start of school. cease. philadelphia is 87 right now, we hit 88 for the high today. 84 in allentown, wilmington 86

and right along the shore a bit of a southeasterly wind a sea breeze keeping temperatures there a little cooler, in cape may at 81 and beach haven at 84 degrees. this is the front moving in from the west but again, no severe weather with it and you can see it is very weak in nature and most of those showers will continue to fall apart as they push in and we lose that daytime heating to keep them going but future tracker at 8 o'clock will show there's still a possibility of a stray thunderstorm or downpour in the western suburbs. then it approaches 95 and it's very spotty at 1 o'clock in the morning and then pushes off the coast by 6 o'clock as we're drying out notice the temperatures to the west. 50's tomorrow morning and lancaster while still very balmy at the shore where the front hasn't completely pushed through into the 70's. so for tonight 50's to the north and west, very warm to the south and east. the boardwalk 68. it will turn partly cloudy overnight once we get some of those showers and downpours through. future tracker dewpoints, this is going to be the biggest change you're going to feel.

1:30 in the morning it is oppressive out there, very humid, right around 70 or better than that and then you can see it drops behind the front. 9 o'clock tomorrow morning drier air to the north and west. still 70's, very muggy south and easter and by tomorrow afternoon, everyone feeling that refreshing change with dewpoints back into the 50's so the atmosphere will feel a lot lighter tomorrow and very bright as well. in fact, your four day at 4:00 it's warm, less humid, 86 tomorrow with any morning clouds giving way to sun. and then it's sunshine pretty much right through wednesday, thursday, into friday and each of those days that humidity is low. it's feeling beautiful and temperatures finally kicking back below normal, 84 on wednesday. we bottom out here thursday at 82 and then recover a little bit on friday at 83 degrees. so, overall a really great rest of the week ahead and we'll have that seven day with the next weekend forecast coming up in the next half hour. >> okay. >> thanks. >> well, the world meeting of families has received international attention for

>> ♪ >> one man is dead after shooting this morning in kensington. happened around 9:00 a.m. here on the 3200 block of kensington avenue. police say a 36-year-old man was shot multiple times including shots to the head. medics rushed him to the hospital but he died about 90 minutes later. police did not tell us his name. they also have not told us who shot him or why. >> from our new jersey news room investigators are trying to figure out if a gas leak may have throwed a fire early this morning in mantua township. the flames started after midnight on holly brook drive. crews say smoke detector its went off which helped two people inside get out to safety. the flames ended up shooting through the roof and causing the house to partially collapse. south jersey gas crews are checking a leak in the back of the property but so far investigators have not said how this all started. >> much more still to come on "action news" at 4:30

continues with an investigation into so-called designer babies. why more and more parents are choosing their child's gender before they're even pregnant. >> also it's called the can opener for a reason. how police outside of boston knew they would eventually capture a crushing clash like -- crash like this on surveillance video. >> the latest dress code violation that has people talking. why an eight-year-old was told he was not allowed to wear his grandmother's rosary beads to school. >> a bombshell shaking a charter school to its core. students may not have a place to learn when the school year starts next month. "action news" reporter walter perez is live in abington to explain exactly what happened. >> reporter: walter. >> reporter: well, rick as you mentioned the school is set to begin in just about two weeks. because of state mandates approximately half of the 1,000 families whose kids are enrolled here at the education

plus cyber school are scrambling to find a school to send their kids to sometime next month and the worst part is most of these kids are special needs children. >> we had no idea this was coming. >> reporter: billy is talking about the closure of the education plus cyber charter school facility in abington which these parents say has done wonders for their kids with disabilities ranging from dyslexia to autism just to name two. caroline says her son who has asperge gary's syndrome has flourished since entering education plus two years ago. >> now he has friends. he wants to be a veterinarian. he went from being below average to doing eighth grade work when he's going in the seventh grade. it's -- we don't have another choice. >> reporter: the problem is that education plus is chartered as a cyber school, not a brick and mortar facility so last week the state center education plus a letterman dating they shut down the building they use as schools. but nicholas torres ceo and co-founderrer of education plus says since most of the

students have that special needs, their facilities are actually designed for working families who cannot be home to help guide their children through the internet based curriculum. torres says it's a system he designed with the purpose of accommodating special needs families. >> most of our parents, they've tried four, five different public options, most of them can't afford a private option and so what we've essentially done to them or have been forced to do to them is two weeks before school now they have to make some hard decision us. >> reporter: the parents we spoke with say they're still hopeful this situation can be resolved. >> everything is taken away from us. and i'm just hoping that somebody in harrisburg will hear us and something is going to change. >> reporter: now, just moments ago we did receive a statement from the department of education. it reads in part "the department has given education plus many opportunities to fix its educational model and to comply with the law and they have chosen not to and now

have put their students and parents in a difficult position so obviously a little we said they said going on right there. we'll have much more on this story on "action news" starting at 6:00 reporting live from abington, walter perez, channel6 "action news." rick. >> walter, thank you. special education was also a topic of anger and frustration in delaware county today. hundreds of students and parents protested pennsylvania state lawmakers over plans to cut funding for special ed programs. the cameras captured the suspect walk into the restaurant on the 2900 block of broad street last thursday. when an employee heard the

bell she walked out and saw a man with a gun at the counter. after telling her to be quiet, the armed suspect demanded that she empty the cash register. she complied and the robber left without hurting her. police in juniata park are also asking for the public's help identifying the man in this surveillance video. they say he broke into the eerie lanes bowling alley on east erie avenue last friday morning. once inside the suspect stole cash out of the register and also the business office and then he ran off. if you recognize the thief, philadelphia police want to hear from you. >> a drug and alcohol counselor was arrested in delaware for allegedly having sex with one of her teenaged patients. 30-year-old rebecca adams faces multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse of a child. according to police adams carried on a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy she was helping treat over a period of three months. officials say the two had multiple sex -- had sex multiple times in and around the dover area.

adams is now in jail on $29,000 bond. >> well, we are learning more about the death of a philadelphia man on a delaware interstate this weekend. state police say 41-year-old timothy kaine crashed into a barrier on southbound i-495 in wilmington yesterday afternoon. for some reason, cane then ran away from the accident scene and jumped off the interstate landing on the edge moore road off ramp below. he was rushed to christiana hospital trauma center but it was too late. cane guide died from his injuries. police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. >> inmates at philadelphia's curran fromhold correctional federal busy preparing for the pope's visit next month. pope francis will visit the prison as part of his tour of the city and today we got our first and only look at the special chair prisoners will present to the pope as a gift. the chair highlights the

philadelphia core program which allows inmates to learn skills which they can put to reese once they're release. >> i went from learning how to read a tape measure to cutting on a table saw, building file cabinets and eight drawer credenzas. >> five inmates are drafting the up hole city that will finish it off. the whole product is expected to take about four weeks and then the chair will be kept under lock and key until pope francis arrives at the prison on sunday september 27th. >> adam with a look at the forecast. you talked about the humidity but we have a nice set of days. >> after this the humidity drops off, a good chance for rain so a beautiful rest of the week as we take a live look on sky6 in center city, 87 degrees so it is warm and those dewpoints are back on the muggy side at 65 degrees. winds out of the south-southwesterly direction and really not much of a heat index compared to the air

grilling could contain harmful bacteria. "action news" anchor monica malpass is live in the news room with details on this story. hi, monica. >> that's right. consumer reports tested 300 packages of ground beef that were sold at grocery stores all over the country and many of them did contain some bacteria that could make you sick. it's a little bit scary of the thought that more than 40 percent of the tested ground beef couldn't stained starr bacteria. ali gorman tells us what else was found in that meet and what you can do at home to keep you and your family safe. also what types of ground beef had the least bacteria. officials at west chester university tell students that campus is safe after school employees tested positive for bacteria that causes legionnaires' disease. we'll have more details on that and much more coming up on "action news" at 5:00. rick we'll see you again. >> all right monica, see you then. thank you. a back to school party for young terse esters in wilmington today with an emphasis on looking good for that first day.

we had an earlier disabled truck that was partially blocking the ramp from 320 to the northbound lanes but that's out of the way now. and better news on the northeast extension. if you're coming down 476 from lansdale that vehicle fire is now completely cleared out. so, everything is reopened there. watch out for a crash in north coventry this afternoon along 100 between temple road by the wawa and the giant. we have a new one in hilltown township bucks county along broad street at middle road. over here in maple shade we had a crash on the southbound side of 73 at 41. it just cleared but some speeds still in the 20's there as you come away from the tacony palmyra bridge and head towards 295. and our crash with downed pole in hammonton that was along 30, the white horse pike, has cleared at moss mill road. things reopening there. this is a good trend. things are clearing out. a couple wrecks in delaware. 41 hockessin by the harvest market. stick with lancaster pike instead. a wreck along route two close to old capitol trail. we'll check it again in the

we've got that wind coming in off of the water which is very warm at 78 degrees right now and that's keeping temperatures in the lower 80's. presently and then as you head inland away from that sea breeze the numbers go up a little bit. 85 in millville, 86 in wilmington, 87 in philadelphia. and in the lehigh valley 84 degrees. so far today in the city of philadelphia we've hit 88 degrees and this is coming off of a very hot august in philadelphia. temperatures so far this month running close to two and a half degrees above normal and we've had plenty of 90-degree days in the city of city of philadelphia but other cities not as much. wilmington only 11 so far this year of 90 degrees or above. allentown a dozen. in atlantic city 16. trenton up there near philadelphia of 20 degrees -- 20 days of 90 degrees or above and in philadelphia, 28 days which is one above the normal for the entire year for the city of philadelphia, so this is going to go down as a little hotter than normal in philadelphia for the summer

season. as we look at a cold front from the west you can see not a lot of action with this. very broken showers and thunderstorms with it so as we go through the overnight hours it's month mostly cloudy, very muggy, 64 to 70. just a few us will hit by a downpour, shower or quick thunderstorm. then that front moves along on to us. it'it dries out. humidity drops. large low pressure over the great lakes will sit here much of the week bringing clouds and below normal temperatures for the great lakes but for us, we're in for a beautiful stretch because we'll be basically sandwiched between that front moving away and a troth to the west that's stuck there so we see sunshine midweek on wednesday and normal temperatures at 84 degrees and on the flip side as well is that beautiful stretch the dewpoints are going to drop into the 50's tomorrow, stay there through the week, maybe even 40's on friday and then bumping back up into the upper 50's on saturday but that is on the pleasant scale here so we'll get rid of that humidity
