hawpe behind the wheel that struck the two-year-old and his mother at masher and lehigh in april. the boy died at saint christopher's, his mother spent a week in the hospital with head, leg and neck injuries. police say the vehicle belonged to their boyfriend of colon's sister. he went to police once he realized his car had been involved in the accident. investigators had been building their case for the past few months trying to prove colon was behind the wheel while the family mourned and prayed for justice. >> to lose a child like that, you know, he took our baby that was only two years old. he's never going to be back. we just passed a birthday that he would have been here with us. >> it's really sad and i think that -- i'm sure that he has friends, cousins, brothers, sisters, relatives, maybe a nephew or cousin that i'm sure if that would have happened to them and what we've been through nobody knows

especially us that i think that he should turn himself in. >> reporter: and police say colon likes to hang out in kensington especially the area of wishart and front. he has a tattoo of samantha of one of his arms and police want the public to know this, there is a $20,000 reward for information leading to colon that results in an arrest and conviction. anyone with information is urged to contact police. i'm live in brewerytown, chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, thank you. let's go to breaking news right now, chopper 6hd over the scene of a problem with nj transit river line in burlington county. officials say around 3:30 this afternoon smoke was reported from one of the cars near the delran station that forced everyone off the train. no reports of any injuries but there were about 60 people on that train. it did have a smoke condition. it was heading northbound between cinnaminson and delran. the passengers have been put on a bus in the meantime to

get them where they're going. nj transit says other trains on the river line should be running normally but in the meantime, there was smoke reported from one of the trains on that burlington county line and all of the passengers all 50 of them removed and put on an nj transit bus to get them where they're going this afternoon. new jersey state police say the runner killed in yesterday's crash in southampton township was a teacher. 29-year-old allison mcginnis of southampton township was hit after a pickup truck veered into oncoming traffic on route 206. the truck then hit trees and flipped over. mcginnis was an english and language arts teacher at helen fort newcomb middle school in pemberton township. the passenger in the car also died. the driver of that car is being treated for serious injuries. >> ♪ >> now to breaking news. a verdict in the rape case that rocked an exclusive new england prep school. a jury in new hampshire acquitted a 19-year-old owen

labri of felony rape. the jury deliberated for eight hours and though they cleared him other most serious charges he was convict he on a series of misdemeanor sex charges. he was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl two years ago when he was 17. she claimed it happened on the campus of the prestigious saint paul school in new hampshire. he could now be sentenced to up to three years in prison. >> florida is under a state of emergency as tropical storm erika continues to move through the atlantic. erika has already brought heavy winds and inches of rain to the caribbean. at least 12 people are dead in dominica and more than 20 others are missing. that storm is expected to hit the dominican republic haiti and the bahamas before reaching florida on monday. of course we're keeping an eye on erika but also looking ahead to what should be a nice weekend here at home. >> yeah, nice and hot. meteorologist adam joseph standing by live at the big board. adam first though the latest track on that storm erika. >> erika has a lost heavy

rain, tropical rains in the caribbean but with respect to the winds, it is a very disorganized storm at the present time. the center of erika is right about here and you can see all of the storms are on the eastern side of that sent. it is encounter something very strong wind shear, that is very strong winds in there upper levels moving from the west to the east ripping erika apart and that's why she really hasn't strengthened since she was a named storm early on this week. also, the track will take it right over the dominican republic and over the dominican republic you have mountains that are 10,000 feet high. the tall of the mountains in all of the caribbean, so as erika passes by over those mountains that will also help to prevent erika from strengthening over the weekend. then it heads towards cube barks the turks and caicos encountering moreland there, the wind shear so you can see the winds do in the really change. if not it could weaken some as it passes by cuba. erika will hit southern

florida possibly monday morning as a weak tropical storm not a hurricane and carve its way through central florida. if erika stays as a very weak tropical storm and it brings rain to south western florida, that is going to be a good thing because they have a drought and desperately need some soaking rain that erika could bring. back at home, though, 80 degrees in allentown, reading and trenton. a very comfortable day. 83 in millville. and upper 70's at the shore and in that full accuweather forecast, we'll talk about the humidity increasing along with those temperatures into the 90's with another heat wave on the way. we'll talk about all those numbers coming up in that full accuweather forecast. al leach shah. >> at heat wave adam. thank you. we're just 28 days away from the pope's visit to philadelphia. today there's a push for more security while he's here but this one doesn't involve the city or the parkway. john rawlins is live in conshohocken with more on montgomery county's plans and john, this involves hundreds of national guardsmen. >> reporter: hi, alicia.

600 to be exact here from montgomery county, that's the request. it's not clear if they're going to get all the guardsmen they're asking for. among the plans here to use some of those guardsmen to deploy along this popular biking and walking path, the schuylkill river trail. the pope will be staying in montgomery county at the saint charles borromeo seminary. the plan to use national guard troops to help with expected traffic there as well as other roads that feed the eastbound expressway which will be closed. >> we certainly anticipate the side roads to be quickly clogged. we have plans in place to expedite movement of cars and open up traffic should we need them for emergency vehicles. >> reporter: tom sullivan says the county is also asking for guard helicopters to survey the traffic and if need be transport critical first responders. >> whether it's a bomb squad for a suspicious package or hazmat teams, we'll have the same issues facing traffic as the motorists will so if we need those teams someplace for

any event that weekend we want to be able to move them in. >> reporter: another focus the schuylkill river trail, the thinking many will use it to cycle to walk to see the pope. the owner of this bike shop already thinking. >> we're a bike rental place. our thought was let's get them interested in the idea of hey let's ride in, we'll make a weekends event out of it. >> reporter: returning pilgrims will likely be traveling after dark. that's where the guard comes n uniformed personnel with flashlights would guide and protect. many peddling today thought biking to the pope a good idea but some wondered about congestion and parking. >> i don't know if i would do it. >> reporter: why. >> i would probably watch it on tv honestly. >> reporter: well, montgomery county's request for 600 a fraction of the requests for the entire region. we're told that tops 5,000 or at least it did at one point. multiple officials today said, though, this is not some sort of marshall law situation or potential marshall law situation forming here. the primary deployment will be for traffic control because of so many roads being closed.

one of the three people who went to the hospital went through decontamination there. the leak was contained at about -- in about a half hour. this is the same refinery where a fire broke out last friday. that fire burned for more than two hours before crews got it under control. no one was hurt and investigators say a problem with a chemical reactor was to blame for that. delaware senator tom carper announced that he is supporting that iran nuclear deal giving another boost to president obama. carper officially came out in favor that of deal today in women to. he also wrote an opinion peels in the news journal of wilmington this morning. carper is now the 30th democrat to come out in favor of that controversial deal. republicans are trying to pass the bill to stop the agreement. if that happens, president obama says he'll veto it. democrats need at least 34 votes to make sure that republicans cannot override that veto. at 41 votes, they can block the republican bill altogether. >> there was cause for celebration on the

he shot her in the back. >> flanagan shot and killed himself while on the run from police. the tv station at the center of all of this, wdbj, says vicki gardener reached out from the hospital to send her condolences. gardener lost a kidney and part of her colon because of that shooting but she is expected to recover. >> well, it was a hero's welcome at newark liberty international airport in new jersey yesterday as alex skarlatos one of the three americans who helped take down a terrorist on a french train last week returned home to family, friends and a salute from new york's finest. it was all cheers for the 22-year-old army national guard specialist and tears and hugs from his parents as you can see, this just one week after what was supposed to be a european vacation for three childhood friends took a turn while on a train from amsterdam to paris a man appeared armed with an ak-47. skarlatos and his friends becoming international heroes for tackling the terrorists. in an exclusive interview with

"action news" reporter trish hartman joins us now live with the details on this wild one. trish, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, brian, police are still on the hunt for that man. police have identified their suspect. they do have an arrest warrant, this after police say that man carjacked a vehicle with two women still inside.

part of that whole ordeal was captured on surveillance video. >> i heard the car crash and then i heard people get out of the car and were screaming and they ran down the street and then the cops came. >> reporter: neighbors say it was a wild night in south philadelphia. police say it began when the suspect blew a stop sign around 12:30 friday morning in a black ford mustang at 17th and reed. but when police tried to pull the suspect over, he took off. police say the mustang rear-ended a car on mifflin street leaving a passenger with minor injuries. then take a look at this surveillance video. cameras captured the mustang turning onto camac street and shows officers chasing the car on foot. >> all of a sudden i just heard this like crazy sound. >> reporter: that was when police say the suspect hit a parked car abandoned the mustang and carjacked a gray nissan maxima forcing the driver out and driving off with two females still in the back seat. the suspect later jumped out and fled on foot and the women

flagged down an officer at ninth and ritner. >> now there will be additional charges of kidnapping because after carjacking the vehicle he took off with two females in the back seat. so, he's definitely facing additional charges of kidnapping in addition to the carjacking robbery. >> reporter: and officers found an important piece of evidence in the front seat of that mustang, a department of corrections photo i.d. card and officers say the carjacking victims identified the man who kidnapped them as the man on that photo i.d. card. now, police say the victims of that carjacking were not seriously hurt. again, the suspect in that carjacking is still on the loose tonight. we're live at south detectives, trish hartman, channel6 "action news." alicia. >> trish, thank you. philadelphia family is feeling lucky after this rather unbelievable car crash played out right in front of their house this morning. chopper 6hd was over the scene on bloomfield avenue in bustleton. they were inside when a car landed in a bizarre position

>> a day care in oklahoma was shut down over allegations that workers there drugged children to get them to sleep. police opened an investigation into that day care after they were tipped off by a former worker. former staff members told police that the owner of the day care ordered them to feed

the infants benadryl at least seven infants were allegedly drugged. >> had somebody not spoke up and the worst was to happen, what she was doing was messing with our lives. had something happened, it would have changed everybody's life forever. >> and something could well have happened. doctors say benadryl can cause small children like infants to stop breathing in certain doses. in this case none of the infants was seriously hurt. prosecutors are still deciding what charges to file. >> ♪ >> to big talkers now. we start with guilded pants debate that is even hotter than bikram yoga. female students at a cape cod high school are steaming about a dress code that rules that spandex tights and now yoga pants must be worn with shorts or a skirt on top. you see, the exercise bottoms aren't banned completely, they're just considered an accessory now.

students say the teenaged girls are being body shamed taking to social media saying things like they shouldn't have to pay because some boys can't control themselves and they're trying to change the new dress code but the school says it's simply trying to give students job skills including what they call awareness of appropriate dress for appropriate venues. so, not feeling the yoga pants at that school. >> it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a drone. a super drone as you can see. it's superman hitching a ride on a drone flying to his theme song. kerry craig posted a video to his youtube channel showing the man of steel flying around victoria park in london. he tells "action news" in order for superman to be in the correct position while flying he had to snap his head off and glue it back on at a different angle. tens of thousands of people have viewed this very cool video showing off the technology.

hey, matt. >> i have some free parking for you as well. you just have to find some of these highways this afternoon and you'll be able to sit there for as long as you want. good afternoon to you brian and alicia. here on 95 we're not parked but we're definitely moving slowly coming north of the delaware state line up towards 322. that's where there's an accident now off to the side but definitely attracting some attention. then farther north here at the girard point bridge just off it you're doing the long slow crawl on up to the walt whitman bridge. that's because on the walt whitman bridge itself we had that overturned vehicle accident in the eastbound lanes headed toward new jersey and just a minute ago i was still seeing emergency crews right here working on the overturned vehicle accident. i don't see them now. i believe the accident just cleared within the last couple minutes, which is good news for the shore travelers because that crash was blocking two lanes causing big delays, some of them still lingering like here on the schuylkill expressway coming eastbound toward the walt, you start to jam just past university avenue and then this is the scene by passyunk avenue, just a long slow crawl

direction. ocean city 76, the same for margate, surf city at 80 degrees, cape may we're sitting at 79. inland locations temperatures go up just a little bit. in philadelphia 82, 82 for wilmington, 83 in millville and right around 80 degrees in allentown and everyone enjoying that low humidity. we look at the satellite again not much to really follow, a few high clouds off the coast and we're seeing some high clouds now building into the southern parts of the great lakes and that will break its way our way eventually the second half of the weekend. but for tonight, a moonlit sky, a near full moon, very comfortable once again, 53 in the suburbs. 64 degrees for center city with a very light and variable wind. high pressure will be just to our east on saturday and that will start to turn the winds out of the south so turning a little warmer at 88 degrees, above average. the humidity comes up just a tad tomorrow but you may not even notice that and then on sunday low pressure starts to pull to our north and west and there will be a low off the coast, so between the two we

will see some debris clouds our way so you may see a little more in the way of high clouds or milky white appearance to the sky on sunday. slightly humid with a temperature at 90 degrees. at the shore the ocean's very warm still in the mid and upper 70's. on saturday, 82, sunny and beautiful. sunday 84 degrees with sunshine and just a few clouds. we take a look at the track that tropical storm erika could possibly take. right now it will be pushing over the dominican republic the next 24 hours and there's a lot of high mountains there that will helper daweaken a hel. strong winds in the upper part of the atmosphere. if erika stays held together, shelter she could fall apart here over the weekend. you can see the track, now it is positioned a little more to the south and west. yesterday all of the lines of those particular models were around miami, jacksonville and just to the east. now today you can see they're

split all over the place and they're over western parts of florida and if not the gulf of mexico and i think the models are having a very hard time where erika could go because there really is a very big concern that erika could fall apart and really be nonexistent by the beginning of next week. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 88 degrees, warm and private tomorrow touch more humid, sunday. 90 degrees and then it's hot, sticky, monday, tuesday, reasons into thursday and it's a dry stretch as well. we could be looking at a pretty long heat wave number five and staying well above normal friday at 88 degrees. some very heavy rains in the caribbean and heading towards florida but we'll be tracking erika all weekend here on channel six for you. >> sounds good, adam. thank you. >> police in minnesota just released this video of a slow speed chase and it turns out the driver, get this, is only eight years old. he made it 20 miles before turning into a drive way, reversing, hitting a patrol

car and then putting the car in park. the boy eventually got out of the car wearing pajamas followed by his two younger foster siblings. a trooper took them back to their foster family unharmed. no word on why the boy took off or where he was headed. we'll be right back.

keepers at the smithsonian national zoo say the surviving cub is doing very well and growing. he'll be one week old tomorrow. the twin brother sadly died on wednesday likely from complications associated with pneumonia. the new cub has two other siblings that are two and 10 years old and happy to welcome this newest one to the family. and a local fire department in delaware gave a helping hand to a circus elephant today. yes, the cold brother circus is in new castle this weekend and the firefighter helped get one of its stars a bath. people also got the chance to feed the elephants today, apparently throwing food at him. performances in new castle last through the weekend. kind of like dinner at my house these days. just throw food. circus heads to forked river ocean county on monday. >> so they got a little snack, they got a nice bath and they're ready for the big show. >> that's a good friday right there. that will do it for "action news" at 4:00 for alicia vitarelli and adam joseph i'm brian taff. hope you'll join me along with
