police say the suspect then forced the other woman and a male victim to engage in sex acts with each other. walter perez will have much more in the way of details on this crime coming up at a live report tonight at 5 o'clock. >> to the shore now where ocean currents have proven to be dangerous over the last few days. a the rough water just as people packed the beaches for the final days of the summer season. it's keeping those lifeguards busy. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has more now from seaside park. >> reporter: big waves at the jersey shore this weekend kept lifeguards busy at midway beach in south seaside park. this rescue was captured on video saturday afternoon as lifeguards battled strong rip currents. >> saturday sunday we had a lot of multiple rescues. we've -- our line went out four times in two days. >> reporter: captain bill flag a former army special forces medic and dive instructor says on saturday afternoon about 2 o'clock a number of people were on a sand bar when powerful rip

offing. >> let's go outside to meteorologist adam joseph. steamy out there, adam. >> that it is. kind of feels like a steam bath when you're outside. get used to it because as we go into the new month of september temperatures are only going to get hotter. we hit 90-degree, the same for wilmington allentown atlantic city arc little better in wildwood at 84 degrees but makes two days in a row now in philadelphia of hitting 90 degrees. and we even hit it with a lot of cloud cover today. we haven't had that much in the way of sunshine. a little more sun as you go north of philadelphia. even a couple of areas getting a couple of sprinkles, even a quick downpour in and around philadelphia international airport earlier this afternoon but overall things are pretty quiet right now. how it feels, though, when you step out once again, it feels very humid, very different than it was over the weekend and late last week. dewpoints running between 65 and 70 degrees. and in fact, when we look ahead to that accuweather forecast, yes, those temperatures continue to climb. we'll have air quality alert

he's charged with vehicular homicide. officer poole was an 18 year veteran of the police department a-father of seven and those who worked with him say he had kindness in his heart. >> he was an excellent officer. he was probably even a better person. if i were to describe him i would just say he was a true gentleman. he was a very nice guy. police say poole was crossing roosevelt boulevard on devereaux when louis vog well cut in front of him while making a turn. poole hit the car and went airborne. he died at aria torresdale hospital. police and family rushed to the er. >> i saw him at the hospital but i didn't personally go over and talk to him. it was just too emotional. >> reporter: police credit tow truck driver dwight williams for helping nab vogwell. the 59-year-old got out of the car, looked at officer poole then jumped back in and sped off. williams sped after him and called police.

williams wouldn't go on camera but his coworkers did. >> he was saying he couldn't believe how dude just hit him, got out the car and looked at him got back in the car and rode a way. that's not something nobody would do. >> reporter: the mood was somber inside the developth district today where officer poole worked. he sometimes worked on the streets at other times he helped process defendants. grief counselors were made available. >> everyone knows that we got to come in, we still got to keep going forward no matter what and i know they're out there heavy hearted today but they're out there in the community helping people. and earlier this month sergeant rafael ali was killed in a single vehicle crash on henry avenue. police suspect speed was a factor in that crash. i'm live outside of police headquarters, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, thank you. you just heard chad mention that crash that killed 32-year-old rafael ali. there's more on that crash now. he was killed in roxborough

last saturday night. police say he lost control of his pickup truck and hit a tree. he was a 10 year veteran of the force and a father of two. >> delaware senator tom carper continued his public push today to support the iran nuclear deal. carper held an event with iraq veteran sean barney and mike bryan this morning in wilmington's rodney square. they say diplomacy not military action is the best way to prevent iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. they say the current deal is a solid one and keeps america's military out of harm's way. last week carper became the 30th senator to back this deal all of whom are democrats. meanwhile secretary of state john kerry getting ready to make a national push for supporting that plan and he'll do it from right here in philadelphia. kerry will lay out his case for the deal on wednesday at the national constitution center. all 54 senate republicans are expected to vote on a resolution next month to reject the deal but they would need just six democrats to join them. so far two democrats have said

they will including new jersey's own bob menendez. >> the holy father connected with people in three other u.s. cities. this was the pope's first ever virtual audience with americans. abc's david muir moderated the conversation via satellite with groups in los angeles, chicago and mcallen, texas. it was a chance for the pontiff to connect with places he is unable to reach during his first u.s. tour. you can learn more about today's event friday in a one-hour special edition of 20/20 at 10:00 p.m. right here on 6abc. >> if you are a parent with an infant or small child in new jersey, heads up. tomorrow new child safety seat rules take effect in the garden state and we're going to break it all down for you so you can be prepared for the rule changes tomorrow. all kids under the age of two who weigh less than 30 pounds

must ride in a rear facing seat equipped with a five-point harness. if you have a kid between the ages of two and four weighing less than 40 pounds, they can be either in that rear facing seat or you can now turn them to face forward. as the kids grow and reach between the ages of four and eight years old, if they're under 57-inches tall they must be in a forward facing seat or a booster seat and children between the ages of eight going up to 17 must wear seat belts in the back seat. new jersey's rules follow the american academy of pediatrics recommendations, so if you haven't been prepared, time to get those car seats up to speed tomorrow in new jersey. sarah. >> that's for sure. thanks, alicia. organizers of jay-z's made in america festival released the said times today for this weekend's concert. the action cam was on the ben franklin parkway where we found crews setting up for the festival. beyoncé will be in town to headline saturday's show.

>> ♪ >> today the man accused of gunning down a texas sheriff's deputy made his first court appearance. the crime has shocked the community and while murder charges have been filed, a motive is still a mystery. we'll go back to that story. in the meantime the man who did appear in court today saying very little during his hearing except to answer the judge's questions. he has a lengthy criminal record, never spent much time in jail. he's now being held without bond and facing capitol murder charges in houston. surveillance video shopping the man appearing to gun down this deputy while he was

filling his gas tank, so prosecutors say while they have the evidence, again, brian, they still don't have a motive in this very upsetting attack in houston. >> all right, alicia. the state department is expected to release another large batch of hillary clinton's e-mails before this day is done. court documents indicate that thousands of messages from her personal account will be revealed. all of the e-mails were sent or received during clinton's time as secretary of state. now, at issue here is whether she miss handled classified information on her private server. this would be the largest batch of her e-mails made public so far. america's tallest mountain has a new name today. mount mckinley is once again denali. president obama is changing the name. denali is what local indigenous people in alaska calm the mountain. it was named mount mckinley in 1896 shortly after william mckinley was nominated for president. the state of alaska has been petitioning for a change for decades but representatives

from mckinley's home state of ohio has always blocked it. today ohio republican and house speaker john boehner said he was deeply disappointed by the move. >> blue bell ice cream is officially back on store shelves today, four months after a listeria outbreak stopped production and led to a nationwide recall. the staff cheered as the first trucks left that planter today. the first shipments will go to parts of alabama and texas. that's where the company says testing found no listeria contamination. blue bell says it will reopen its other plants and start wider distribution in phases over the next few months. and now to a look at the closing numbers today. not a good way to start the week but not as bad as we've seen lately. the dow down 115 points, the nasdaq off 52 points, the s & p down just about 17 on the day. and in the meantime, we've also learned new information about ashley madison. the hack attack that's caused international embarrassment for the company has not slowed

down its business. in fact the company says more than 87,000 women signed up for the web site last week alone. hackers and security experts say the stolen data does not support the claim and that at least 90 percent of the site's users are men. hackers reveal the identities of the site's 32 million users earlier this month. that led to the ceo's resignation just last week. >> today world meeting of families organizers unveiled the large cross that will be used during the catholic gathering here later this month. this is the 10-foot cross mercy prayer cross it's called. it was designed and handcrafted by staff and students here at mercy vocational high school in north philadelphia. young people from all around the world will write notes of love and petitions to jesus that will then be adhered to the sides of the cross during the youth congress. after the papal visit, the mercy prayer cross will be permanently placed on the school's campus. remember, you can keep up

with the latest on the plans for the pope's visit with our special twitter account. just follow at 6abc pope. >> all right, time now for a check of the accuweather forecast. >> let's head over to adam joseph on one steamy afternoon, adam. >> yeah, this last day of august, temperatures at 90 so far in philadelphia and we were 91 degrees yesterday. so, a pair of 90's so far and we're kind of losing touch as to what is normal this time of year, the normal high 83 degrees, so we're running seven to 8 degrees above the normal and we're going to get close to maybe 10 to 11 degrees above normal as we get into the middle of the week. but august we're closing it out today, so it was a very warm month. temperatures running over 2 degrees above normal. we had 12 days where temperatures were in the 90's in philadelphia. a typical august, we only see seven days in the 90's, so again, very warm and extremely parch. we saw less than an inch of rain this entire month in philadelphia and we're running close to two and a half degrees below normal and as we

spill into the month of september very little is going to change. not much in the way of rain and very hot temperatures. 89 in trenton right now, 88 in reading. the hot spot the last hour allentown at 90 degrees. a little better down to the south. right now millville 84, dover 85, cape may 83 degrees. cloud cover has been a little thicker south of philadelphia this afternoon. a couple of sprinkles in parts of salem county, gloucester county, near philadelphia international airport this afternoon. a little more in the way of breaks of sun north of the city but the clouds are beginning to pull away and that will be the trend overnight tonight. so, we'll clear that sky out but it stays very warm and very muggy. 65 allentown, 73 in philadelphia, 68 in millville, 72 on the boardwalk in atlantic city. and the muggies will continue as we get into your tuesday. in fact, look at the temperatures. 92 in wilmington tomorrow afternoon with sunshine, 93 philadelphia, 91 in trenton, little better at the shore.

the sea breeze will try to kick in, places like wildwood and cape may county where you're surrounded by a little more water at 80 degrees but even lancaster sitting close to 90. as we look very far in the eastern atlantic, here at the coast of africa right here. a wave pushed off of the coast of africa which is very typical but this particular storm exploded very quickly. it is a hurricane. hurricane fred, winds sustained at 80 miles per hour and passed by the cape verde islands and headed directly this afternoon and this is kind of unique. it's the farthest lurk to form in the lanta particular. only three known hurricanes to impact the cape verde islands in history. back at home very quiet but not and humid the next four days. heat wave number five will begin tomorrow for the first day of september at 93 degrees. hot and humid wednesday and dry, 94 degrees.

it happened around 7:00 a.m. on the 5300 block of reinhard street. police say they found the victim lying right there in the street. someone shot him in the head and he died at the scene. police have not yet told us his name. they also have not said who killed him or why. >> firefighters battled an early morning blaze in kensington. the action caln was on the 3000 block of arbor street. that's where this fire started around 3:45 a.m. firefighters found the flames coming from the second story when they arrived on the scene. nobody was home at the time. the fire marshal is trying to figure out how the blaze started. >> and coming up as "action news" at 4:00 continues today with pope francis' visit to philadelphia just weeks away, the city is stressing a more positive message that it's opened for business. philadelphia and today city officials are out in full force pushing a more positive message. the i'll be there campaign is helping to highlight the business that is will be opened during the historic papal visit. "action news" reporter john rawlins joins us live at one of them today in center city, a wawa with all the details. hi, john. >> reporter: hi, brian. well, you know, dispute those early reports of discouraging security measures and long lines, the message today was things are going to be fine, that there will be a lot of businesses inside the traffic box here that are going to be opened from big players like wawa to small operators. >> ♪ >> reporter: from high fiving wally the wawa goose in center city to pat stakes' in south philadelphia the i'll be there marketing campaign hit the road to generate some papal buzz. and to convince businesses to work with the city if need be to make sure they can get deliveries and remain opened for the big weekend. one place already on board, mcgillan's ale house which predates the civil.

"action news" is posting every pope related update in one place on our web site. we've got information on street closures, transportation details, all the schedules for the world meeting of families and safety tips all of it on 6abc.com/pope. >> in other news, philadelphia police are investigating a double shooting. shopper 6hd was over the scene around 2:00 this afternoon in the city's kensington section. investigators say two people were found shot near the intersection of west huntingdon and north lawrence street. they were both taken to temple hospital for treatment. chopper six was over the scene of this crash in northeast philadelphia. at least one car overturned coming to a rest with the driver's side door on the ground. this happened on academy road near president street. "action news" is waiting to get additional details as to what happened. the female driver was taken to

aria torresdale hospital in stable condition. >> firefighters battled a row home fire in trenton early this morning. they found thick smoke and heavy flames when they first arrived on the scene. crews were able to keep that fire from spreading. the home in the unit block of wood street was vacant. no one was hurt here. a neighboring home was damaged, though. the investigation is still under way but right now investigators are calling this fire suspicious. this morning evesham township new jersey launched a new initiative to prevent driving under the influence. the program is called evesham saving lives. beginning this friday any evesham resident can get a free ride home from any of the town's businesses that serve alcohol. state grants and donations will pay for shuttles as well as sober sam the designated driver service. evesham police say there haven't been any alcohol related deadly crashes there since 2009 and they are very much hoping to keep it that way. >> adam here now with a check of the accuweather forecast and what's turning out to be a very warm start to the work

week and a warm start to the month of september. >> yeah, and it's going to continue to roll, almost the first week of september, we're going to be way above average day and night. as we take a look right now live, it's hazy, it's hot, it's humid in center city, 88 degrees. we've had a lot of cloud cover today but in the last few hours a lot of the clouds are starting to depart to the east and to the south but that dewpoint is back up to 68 degrees creating a heat index right now of 92 degrees. and honeybrook hazy sunshine, 88. the winds out of the west at 9 miles an hour. again, very uncomfortable with those dewpoints in the upper 60's and in atlantic city the dewpoint 72 soupy degrees with an air temperature of 82 and that water still very warm at 76. i know a lot of folks still have this particular week off with the kids, some have gone back to school but a lot of folks at the shore this weekend and it's going to be the perfect place to be. stay away from that heat and humidity. >> i'm jealous. >> we will talk about the seven-day forecast that will

is it. >> summer has come to an end for students at mass community school in northeast philadelphia. the action cam was there today for the first day of school. parents walked the younger ones to their classrooms and the older kids got to see the school's brand new high tech studio which has two 3-d printers. the charter school has students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. >> one chester county school district that's seen its share of controversy is now moving forward with the start of a new school year. bomb making materials they found in the suspect's apartment. now to the migrant crisis in europe. austria has stepped up inspections at its hungarian border after 71 migrants were found dead in a truck. inspections have created a massive 18-mile traffic jam but austria is not only country doing these traffic checks. germany is also keeping an eye out for human traffickers on the highways. >> on the health check at 4:00 today a complicated pregnancy may have resulted in much more than just a healthy baby. a 51-year-old grandmother give birth to her own grandchild little mila a little month ago. her parents mandy and james stevens were having trouble getting pregnant. that's when maybey mandy's mom sherri stepped in. she acted as a surrogate for the couple but the pregnancy was high risk of course because of sherri's age but also because she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. none of that fazed her. >> my children are the best thing in the world to me and so to be able to give that to

your own child is -- i can't even describe that feeling. >> well, here's the twist in all of this. sherri's ms which was in remission could stay that way thanks to her pregnancy. researchers think that pregnancy related to changes in her immune system could keep the disease at bay possibly permanently. mom, baby and grandma are all doing great today. >> beautiful story. big talkers now and a 20-year-old college student in oregon's facebook post showing offer her new tattoo is going viral and not just because it begins dear mom and dad, please don't kill me over this permanent choice. it's the new message that's em blaze sonned on becca miles' leg that has people sharing it at record speed with the mission to end the stigma surrounding depression. now, if you look straight on, the tattoo appears to say i'm fine. but when you look at it from her perspective, upside down, it reads, safe me.

zoo yesterday took my family there, we had a very similar experience with the orangutans there. >> maybe you can have your own viral video. >> let's all be thankful that there is glass there. >> exactly. >> alicia thanks very much. let's get another check on the roads right now. >> matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with an upday. hey, matt. >> going bananas on a couple roads this afternoon as we peek outside at the roosevelt boulevard extension, route one, these are the northbound lanes close to the henry avenue overpass. there's a crash as you can see involving looks like a couple vehicles at least taking out the left lane. so, just the two right lanes are squeezing by. that doesn't bode well cause this is normal al busy spot so now it's extra busy coming off the schuylkill expressway. barely moving through this point at the ridge avenue on-ramp on up to that accident scene, again right by the henry avenue overpass on the northbound side of one. in addition to that we're watching a building fire in upper darby this afternoon along glencoe road between walnut and samson. on the schuylkill expressway just normal stuff this afternoon, some westbound

>> meteorologist adam joseph as we kick off the work week but end up august. >> yeah, last day of august, new work week, hot, it's going to stay hot as we go through the rest of the week and the upcoming next weekend which is labor day weekend. as we look at double scan live radar around the region we could use a little rain around here for a couple different reasons. the ground is very dry, it's parched and it would temporarily cool us off but we're not tracking anything this afternoon. what we are tracking is the heat. 90 right now in the lehigh valley, 87 wilmington, 85 in dover, 82, that is in cape may, 81 even in the poconos and on the verge of 90 degrees at the last hour in trenton. in addition to the heat we've got that humidity that is back. the dewpoints are running between 65 and 70 degrees.

meaning it feels very humid out there. when it starts to touch 70 or above like beach haven or cape may, you can start to say the word tropical and oppressive and we're going to stick around with these numbers through the remainder of the week as well, maybe coming down on friday. as we look at satellite and radar, we've got the moisture just off the coast of virginia and north carolina, sliding just to our south. we saw some clouds break away and a couple of sprinkles just to the south of philadelphia early this afternoon but the moisture that is just off the carolina coast is a weak low pressure here that's kind of siphoned in some of the remnants of what was tropical storm erika that continues to douse parts of florida but all this unfortunately for us will stay off the coast and to our south as high pressure remains in control. for tonight, the clouds are moving out, so it clears up. it's mild, it's muggy, 65 to 73 for the overnight low. and muscle maker of a high will buckle that jet stream back up into canada so we are talking about a sweaty

september here, hazy, hot, humid, heat wave number five begins tomorrow and extends right through thursday. in fact, over the next three days our air temperatures tuesday, wednesday, thursday will be around 93, 94 and 95 degrees. they're far from the records, though. the records for each of these days is between 97 tomorrow and the century point wednesday and thursday. we're not going to hit records but it is going to be well above normal. to cool yourself off hit that ocean, 74 pleasant degrees. tomorrow lots of sunshine and warm. the afternoon sea breeze will kick in keeping temperatures there in the middle to upper 80's as opposed to the low 90's. most of us will feel inland. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 93 tomorrow. so that will make heat wave number five. it continues on wednesday, hot and humid of 94. scorching on thursday, peaking at 95 degrees and a cold front will come through late thursday night, early friday morning. could be a stray downpour with that but most areas stay dry. now it's hot behind that front

"action news" reporter annie mccormick is live at 53rd and vine street and annie, please, set the scene for us there. >> reporter: yeah, sharrie, this discovery was made by investigators from the state department who came in here for an inspection. after they did receive a tip. once inside they were

disturbed by what they saw. they found at least three bleeds, two of them were decomposing. southwest detectives are assisting them in this investigation and describe to us what they found inside. >> one in the casket has been embalmed and apparently at this point it has received services and they're just waiting for the cremation date for that particular body. the remaining two are not embalmed and we only have one death certificate at this point for those two bodies. >> reporter: and they're past the point of when they should be embalmed. >> correct. >> reporter: southwest detectives say this funeral director has a license but the funeral home located at 53rd and vine does not. this home is currently operating as hawkins funeral services but it appears the home used to operate under the name gaither and kimball funeral home. just last week police responded to powell mortuary services. there they discovered three bodies found rotting in boxs in a garage. the business police say was operating w
