disturbed by what they saw. they found at least three bleeds, two of them were decomposing. southwest detectives are assisting them in this investigation and describe to us what they found inside. >> one in the casket has been embalmed and apparently at this point it has received services and they're just waiting for the cremation date for that particular body. the remaining two are not embalmed and we only have one death certificate at this point for those two bodies. >> reporter: and they're past the point of when they should be embalmed. >> correct. >> reporter: southwest detectives say this funeral director has a license but the funeral home located at 53rd and vine does not. this home is currently operating as hawkins funeral services but it appears the home used to operate under the name gaither and kimball funeral home. just last week police responded to powell mortuary services. there they discovered three bodies found rotting in boxs in a garage. the business police say was operating without a license

since 2012. then days later another funeral home, price funeral home in west philadelphia offered to give a proper burial for those bodies found in the garage. turns out price funeral home was also operating without a license since 2012. and back out here live police also say hawkins funeral service just recently took over this building. now, this is still very early in the investigation. right now police are still in there with the funeral director right now going through licenses, going through information trying to find out if they have death certificates in there for the bodies that were discovered inside. it will still be awhile to see whether or not charges will be filed and what those charges will be. a man hugh was identified as a funeral director on site here did not want to comment today on camera. for now reporting live in west philadelphia, annie mccormick, channel6 "action news." >> all right, annie, thank you. a 59-year-old man is facing charges tonight in a hit and run that killed an off duty philadelphia police

officer. officer lamar poole was driving his motorcycle home from work yesterday morning when he was hit by a car in northeast philadelphia. he later died at the hospital. officials believe louis vogwill was driving drunk at the time. according to police vogwill got out of his car after the accident, saw officer poole on the ground and tried to flee. a tow truck driver who saw the crash helped police track vogwill down. poole is the second off duty police officer killed on philadelphia streets this month. >> philadelphia police are searching for an armed man who robbed and sexually assaulted two women and a man in fishtown. they're hoping that a sketch will lead them to a suspect. "action news" reporter walter perez is live near the scene of the crime. this is near cumberland street and the delaware river. walter you have the full story. >> reporter: sharrie it happened about a quarter mile back on this remote trail off north beech street in fishtown. that's where we're told young people often gather in a place called graffiti pier which is now the abandoned pier 124.

people left there to admire the artwork but their trip ended with them being robbed at gun point and sexually assaulted. special victims investigators say the mandy picketed in this composite sketch is behind a truly disturbing crime. authorities say he started making small talk at the so-called graffiti pier last sunday evening with three people in their 20's, two women and one man. >> they were there to take pictures of graffiti pier, general to explore the area. >> reporter: that's when the attacker reportedly pulled out a gun, led them to a wooded area nearby and stole their phones, wallets and cash before sexually assaulting all of the victims. it ended with the suspect tying up his victims. >> in essence bound them with their own clothing before he was last seen walking from the area towards richmond street. >> reporter: the attacker is described as a white man standing approximately 5 feet 9-inches tall weighing about 230 pounds. he was last seen wearing jeans

>> the man accused of shooting and killing a cher rivers depth knee texas made his first appearance in court today. according to investigators shannon miles shot sheriff's deputy darren goforth while he was gassing up his patrol car. officials said miles continuing shooting goforth after he fell to the ground firing a total of 15 shots. attorneys for miles said they intend to plead not guilty. miles is due back in court in october. >> at least six inmates in a california state prison have contracted legionnaires' disease. more than 50 other inmates are under observation over fierce of an outbreak. the disease considered a severe form of pneumonia is spread through water. the prison has stopped cooking food and instead serves inmates boxed foods. portable toilets have been brought in as well while

this is going to be a hot start to the first week of september. if fact, it's been a pretty warm august. so far, well, it's been a warm one, 2.4 degrees above average and typically in the month of august we have about seven days with temperatures in the 90's. this month we had 12 days with temperatures in the 90's and it has been quite dry. we haven't even picked up an inch of rainfall. we've been about two and a half inches below average and hopefully things will turn around as far as the precipitation is concerned as we get into the rest of september. temperatures outside, it's 88 in philadelphia, 88 in allentown. you have that south -- west to southwesterly wind at this hour. 83 in cape may, 89 pretty warm in trenton. here's satellite6 along with action radar. we've had a couple of spotty showers earlier today and a fair amount of cloud cover. the clouds are starting to break for some late day sunshine and you notice this disturbance continues to push on off to our east. so, that will make for clearing skies for the rest of tonight. in fact, that is the call from accuweather. mostly clear, still mild and

rock star status. he's the first latin american jesuit to lead the roman catholic church and today another historic landmark for the pope from argentina. he became the first pope to hold a virtual audience via satellite with hundreds of people in los angeles, chicago, texas with abc world news tonight anchor david muir moderating at the vatican. the virtual audience lasted about an hour as the pontiff engaged with individuals from three different groups. students at the high school in new york citin. the pope said it's important for him to meet with all of them, the citizens of the united states who have problems like anyone else. he heard stories of struggle invoking fears and gave immigrant children hope for a better future: at one point asking a teenage interchicago fighting tough perth battles to sing for him. she did. >> i guess i had to do it since it's the pope.

aires argentina. >> in other news tonight a crash in northeast philadelphia sent one person to the hospital this afternoon. chopper six was over the scene along academy road near president street. still not clear how many vehicles were actually involved but as you can see one car flipped on its side and trapped a woman inside it. crews will to cut her out of the wreckage. she was rushed to aria torresdale hospital in stable condition. the cause of the crash still under investigation. philadelphia police were also investigating a murder tonight. happened around 7:00 a.m. on the 5300 block of reinhard street in the southwest. investigators say someone shot a man and left him in the street. authorities have not released the victim's name or a possible motive for the shooting. and foreign investigators are -- fire investigators are sorting through evidence following a suspicious blaze in trenton. the fire broke out along the unit block of wood street. the fire reached two alarms before firefighters could finally get it under control. neighboring homes were also damaged but luckily no one was hurt. and so far there are no suspects.

>> dangerous rip currents led to several dramatic rescues this weekend at the jersey shore and one was actually captured on video. authorities at midway beach in south seaside park say lifeguards aided distressed swimmers four different times. "action news" spoke with a lifeguard who witnessed the rescue and he says that several people were on a sand bar when a rip current swept them out. >> the current is so strong. it's almost impossible to swim against. so, they swim the line out, we secure all the victims with a couple lifeguards and have a couple people tending the line to pull them back in. >> everyone who was rescued did not suffer any injuries but lifeguards are cautioning all beachgoers that if they are not on duty, don't go into the water. also from our new jersey news room tonight a-couple doing landscaping at their home in lower township made a frightening discovery. a live cannon ball was in their backyard. it was discovered along the 200 block of west bates avenue

saturday. the couple called police who sent out the atlantic city police bomb squad. authorities x-rayed the cannon ball and determined that it was actively explosive. well, they took it away and detonated it in an unpopulated area. officials say while it's not uncommon to find military ordnances in that area, folks should never touch or move them. >> workers safety will be the focus of a nationwide movement this week. "action news" is at the consulate general of mexico in center city where authorities kicked off labor rights week today. osha is collaborating with the console general to make sure workers have certain rights. they say no one should have to put their life in danger for paycheck. a proud day in the first state as it marks 360 years of the delaware national guard its a story our delaware news room has been following all day long. >> ready, aim, fire. complete with a 21 gun salute, a flyover from nation guard chopper and more at fort christina park in wilmington. governor jack markell was joined by senators tom carper and chris coons who sang happy birthday to national guard members. they talked about the storied tradition of the delaware national guard that was founded on this day back in 1655. at that time delaware was still under swedish rule. one burlington county community is taking a bold step to make sure residents don't drink and drive. today evesham township unveiled its new evesham saving lives initiative. starting this friday any evesham resident can get a free ride home from any of the town's businesses that serve alcohol. sober sam a designated drive service as well as state grants and donations will pay for the program. evesham township police say there have not been any alcohol-related deadly crashes since 2009 and they want to keep it that way. >> it's time for another check of the highways and by ways out there. >> matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with the

low down on the slow down there behind you. >> yeah, we got plenty of them as we say goodbye to august unfortunately on this monday afternoon, rick and sharrie. i know, it's kind of a tear jerking situation. crash here on the roosevelt boulevard northbound side. this is a stubborn one. still here in the left lane close to the henry avenue overpass and you're still barely moving coming off the schuylkill northbound up to that accident scene. look at the long slow crawl. i think maybe hunting park avenue would be a better bet for you this afternoon or even the northbound lincoln drive at this point no problems reported over there. but we do have a new problem on the pennsylvania turnpike. it's an accident involving a deer unfortunately in the westbound direction by fort washington taking out the left lane. speeds are just in the teens coming away from willow grove. and of course it's slow on the eastbound side like so many afternoons with speeds in the low 20's. in new britain bucks county, still have that crash involving the vehicle into a pole blocking off ferry road. creek road gets you around that. there was one in maple shade on the northbound side of 73 by fox meadow but that's off

>> one police officer is dead and at least 90 people were injured after clashes outside of ukraine's parliament building. tensions have been running high as lawmakers continues to negotiate with pro-russian separatists. today protesters were rallying against a bill that would give separatist regions more power. according to police the protesters threw a grenned made at officers. dozens of people were hurt. 30 people were arrested. the bill at the heart of today's protest goes up for a full vote this winter. in russia rescue crews are trying to reach 14 bears who have been stranded by flooding. heavy rains caused a local river to overflow flooding an entire neighborhood in eastern russia. hundreds of residents were evacuated but zoo keepers could not reach the bears in time. well now the water is too high to let the bears out of their cages so crews are working to air lift the cages to safety. in the meantime zoo keepers are using boats to feed the bears bread and sugar.

from west philadelphia tonight. a gruesome find at a funeral home that was apparently operating illegally. state and local authorities converged at 53rd and vine streets this afternoon. there they found three bodies in bad condition. two of them were decomposing. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is standing by with the very latest. annie, this is the third funeral home to be investigated in recent weeks in the city. >> reporter: rick, it is and we just talked to investigators. they actually tell us now they realize that all three bodies were badly decomposing. they tell us that this business behind me had conditions that were so bad that they were not the standards for business taking care of the dead. all three bodies were found badly decomposed and that even includes that the one the funeral director tells police was embalmed. philadelphia police investigating this funeral parlor at 53rd and vine. state department investigators working on a tip called in southwest detectives after finding poor conditions inside in
