this ridge of high pressure over canada that will continue to sink southward so numbers in maine in the middle 40's and a lot of that drier air will drain southward across the midatlantic region as we go throughout the rest of our holiday weekend. so, it looks to be an. amazing holiday. in fact, lower humidity on the way later on tonight during the overnight hours you're really going to feel the difference as we get into the day on saturday. sunny skies with warm temperatures, so no complaints. if you have an outdoor barbecue coming up this weekend. coming up guys going to take a closer look at the forecast and let you know how long the heat goes away and when it comes back with potentially heat wave number six coming up with that full and exclusive accuweather forecast. monica. >> thank you so much. the ben franklin parkway has been transformed into a music lovers dream. some of the biggest names will perform this weekend at the made in america music festival. of course you heard of beyoncé the headliner. monica. this is still a very busy event right now because crews are busy trying to construct one of the many stages here at made in america. that right there is the main stage and come tomorrow, this place will be packed with people and performers. beyoncé is the headliner for this year's made in america festival. she takes the main stage tomorrow night around 10:30. the weekend will conclude the event on sunday night but in between, bands and musicians from all genres will be playing on one of five stages. dustin summer arrived from ohio to take in the labor day weekend extravaganza. >> i saw the map online. looks like it's going to be a blast. i seen pictures and we're real excited for it. >> reporter: organizers with live nation say this year's made in america sold out in advance, the first for the event. >> used to be in philadelphia i think a lot of people left town. used to go down to the shore, go on different vacations but now people stay here in philadelphia. it's become kind of a cool thing. it's become a tradition for

people. >> reporter: a heavy police presence is expected along the parkway. a sort of dry run for the papal visit later this month. deputy mayor of public safety everett gillison says visible and nonvisible cameras are installed in the area to monitor the crowds and technology and infrastructure have also been beefed up along the parkway. >> our partners with at&t, verizon and everyone has really enhanced the capacity in this area in advance of the papal use of the parkway, so we're going to actually test and see how much usage we'll get and monitor all of that as we're here. >> reporter: and if you're coming down here this weekend you're going to see some of these signs like that right there. well, that is your location. so, if you get in any sort of trouble and you need to call for help, that's your location. you tell authorities that and then the responders can get to you and get you to quickly. as for the gates for made in america, they open at noon tomorrow. i'm live along the parkway,

different septa bus routes are also running with detours. if you're headed to the mountains, poconos bound on this friday afternoon, trouble, a crash on the northbound northeast extension just out of the mid-county toll plaza is blocking the left side of the roadway but that's not where the delays end. you're looking at teens and 20's up through lansdale. the better news comes in in norristown where today they reopened the northbound lane of markley street. had been closed since february of 2013. so, if you're trying get to eisenhower middle school for school next week, good news, you're back in business there along markley. in delaware a couple accidents, one on 95 southbound past the newark tolls not causing a huge delay. one along route 40 at porter road. we'll check it again rick and monica in the next half hour. >> thank you. we have breaking news out of tinicum township delaware county where a milling truck, one of the trucks that remake the roadway an car collided. it happened about 50 minutes ago at 4:15 in the 200 block of wanamaker avenue injuring and entrapping one person. we are told the trapped person was removed from their

vehicle. they are now in the ambulance there in the middle of your screen and about to be transported to a local hospital. no word yet on the extent of their injuries but again, at least one person seriously injured when a milling truck and a car collided here in tinicum township in the 200 block of wanamaker avenue. traffic there snarled of course and lots and lots of rescue personnel still on the scene. >> meanwhile deputy clerks in eastern kentucky began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples today against the wishes of their boss. kim davis who is now behind bars for refusing to hand out the licenses because she opposed same-sex marriage. abc news reporter has the full story. >> we got it. whew! finally. >> reporter: april miller and karen roberts displaying their triumph today. the couple among the first to obtain a marriage license at a kentucky county clerk's office that up until yesterday refused to issue them to gay

couples. >> love won. >> i'm so ecstatic and happy and i just can't wait to get married. >> reporter: the controversy began in june when kim davis refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite a supreme court ruling stating it was legal. davis has insisted her religious beliefs prevent her from obeying the law. >> under whose authority are you not issuing licenses. >> under god's authority. >> reporter: when she continued the deny gay couples marriage licenses ay on thursday a a judge ordered davis to jail. her husband says the family has no regrets. >> she will be there until however long it takes. >> just want the licenses given out. no one wanted her in jail. >> reporter: james yates and william smith jr. were the first couple granted a marriage license in rowan county after having been denied five times. he says it's a civil rights issue. davis' attorney today saying it's about religious rights.

>> as the search for three men wanted tour killings a police officer in northern illinois continues tonight, investigators are hoping a $50,000 reward and new videos will help. 30-year-old police veteran lieutenant charles joseph gliniewicz was shot tuesday in the village of fox lake while pursuing three suspicious men. the killing occurred in an open area of trees and marsh land bordered by several houses many people in those houses have stepped forward with surveillance videos that apparently show the three

suspected killers. >> just three weeks until pope francis comes to philadelphia. his visit is historic as you know because this pontiff has never been to the u.s. well, this week pope francis spoke with americans in a special virtual audience moderated by world news tonight anchor david muir. the pope had candid conversations with folks in chicago, l.a. and texas. he also spoke with muir in an exclusive one-on-one interview at the vatican. you can see it all tonight on a special edition of 20/20, pope francis and the people. that's tonight at 10:00 only here on 6abc. check it out. >> health check tonight researcher at the university of delaware is hoping to improve the way some childhood cancers are treated. he says nanotechnology may be the key he. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us from the big board to explain. hi, ali. >> hi, guys. yeah, the good news is when it comes to some childhood cancers such as some leukemias more kids are surviving. now the goal is to keep them healthy as they grow up. one local expert says using

nanotechnology or tiny particles to deliver chemotherapy holds a lot of promise. >> this is the first couple days he was diagnosed. >> cheryl hayes says it was the most difficult time in her life. her son matthew was diagnosed with leukemia when he was two and a half years old. >> it was like our world just totally fell apart. >> matt went through 38 months of chemotherapy. he's now cancer free and seems to be living like any other healthy 11-year-old. >> basketball, playing video games and riding my bike. >> but cheryl worries the treatment that saved him could also lead to problems down the road. dr. raj at the university of delaware says that's where his research aims to help. about 90 percent of kids with leukemia survive. but because chemotherapy kills both cancerous and normal cells, some kids face long

term complications such as learning problems, bone deformity and even secondary cancers. but dr. raj says using nanotechnology or tiny particles can help. >> just to give an idea what nanotechnology, the particle size the diameter of your hair is about 80,000 nano meters and we are talking about 100 nano meters. you can't see them. you need an electron microscope to see that. >> his research shows you can fill the cavity of a nano particle with chemotherapy. then on the surface add centers that will look for and unlock cancer cells. >> so you can spare the normal cells and at the same time you can kill the cancer cells. that's its biggest advantage. >> cheryl says if it works for kids, it will be a game changer for other young cancer survivors. >> that way the kids, it's not as hard on their systems from the get go during treatment and it won't be as hard for them later on in life. >> so, this has been shown to work in a laboratory but it still needs to go through more testing before it can be used for kids.

but nanotechnology is being used to deliver some types of chemotherapy to adults. rick and monica, back over to you. >> incredible. >> thank you, ali. three people received the heart saving award from the american heart association today. t.s.a. workers saved a passenger at philadelphia international airport back in july. they used cpr and an aed to resuscitate george stenkler after he suffered a heart attack. today he thanked them. >> the doctors tell me i'm in the 10 percent category in terms of people that have had my kind of event and lived to tell about it. and it's only because of the actions of the people here that i'm here today. no question about it. >> and mayor michael nutter was among the local leaders who came out to recognize the trio today as well.

>> ♪ >> the nation's unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest level since 2008. the latest report from the federal government shows the jobless rate fell to 5.1 percent last month. also in august 173,000 new jobs were added. positions in healthcare and

hospitality saw the most increases. manufacturing had a tougher month losing 17,000 jobs. well, boeing has released its plans to make what will be world's largest twin engine jetliner. the boeing 777-9x will have the widest wing span of any aircraft in the company's history. 235 feet and 5-inches to be exact. the wings will be so big they will have hinges so they can be folded up when the plane is rolling across taxi ways. testing of a prototype is expected to get under way soon and production should begin in 2017. >> today dozens of teachers and staff at a north philadelphia school spent one of the last days of summer break and in the community. the employees at thomas edison high school and the john ferrera skill center hit the pavement to let parents know they are excited about the school year. they wanted to get acquainted with residents and businesses in the area and to see what their students will encounter on their way to school. the principal started this tradition last year.

pushing off to our south and west. here's storm tracker6 live double scan radar. you can see for philadelphia that 95 corridor points to the east they're dry. across lancaster county and to the north of lancaster we're tracking a spotty shower. on street level you can see on storm tracker we're tracking some moisture moving to the south and west of lititz pressing into manheim at this hour. lightning strikes about four within the past 15 minutes. a lot of this moisture starting to dissipate and move out of our region. the big weather story today, that sent heat. it continues. in fact we started the month out on the hot side. 95 degrees. in fact, this is day six of heat wave number five. the last time we had temperatures this hot for the month of september was 42 years ago back in 1973 where we had four straight days with temperatures in the 90's. temperatures outside at this hour, it's 85 in philadelphia, 82 in allentown, the lehigh valley, 79 up in lancaster. along the coast in beach haven, 80 degrees but you look at the wind direction and the wind speed.

we've got a northeasterly cone tent to our wind. sustained at 8 miles per hour in allentown to 16 miles an hour in philadelphia and i'll show you were that wind is doing to the moisture we had across our region earlier today. here's satellite6 along with action radar. the clouds we had earlier this afternoon thanks to that easterly wind starting to dissipate and break apart and it suppresses all of that moisture to the south and west and that will be the focus as we get into the rest of our holiday weekend with high pressure returning just in time for saturday. it is friday night and it's all about high school huddle it is back tonight. golden hawks up against the falcons. it's partly cloudy, rather humid, 7:00 p.m. for the kickoff a temperature around 79. once we get into 10:00 p.m. tonight we'll drop down to 73. call from accuweather for the rest of tonight still muggy, partly cloudy, 61 in allentown, 69 in philadelphia and 69 degrees at the boardwalk for the overnight low. as we punch into that drier air as we go through the overnight hours the moisture will start to clear out and

watching heavy traffic on southbound 42 as people head down the shore. it's especially congested back at the walt whitman bridge onto southbound 42. by the time you reach this point at creek road surely not so bad headed down towards the a.c. expressway. the jam is a little bit farther back towards the city of philadelphia. if you're headed toward the city of philadelphia on the ben franklin bridge, our good buddy ben, some good news for you today. as promised, they reopened that westbound right lane. it's going to help us out lot especially during the morning commute and patco trains rolling over the ben are on a special get out of town schedule this afternoon to give you a little extra service. on the vine street expressway, well, plenty of congestion again in both directions this afternoon. doesn't help us out that the westbound off ramp to the ben franklin parkway remains closed. that's because the parkway itself remains closed. that's because our good pals, jay-z and beyoncé are in town all weekend for made in america. lots of street closures and gridlock expected right around the parkway basically through monday morning. if you're headed for the poconos, our crash just north of the mid-county toll plaza

"action news" reporter vernon odom is live at philadelphia northeast detectives with the latest on the investigation. vernon. >> reporter: at this hour, the detectives from here at the northeast division are still collecting, retrieving and scouring surveillance video from that lower frankford neighborhood as they

search for that pair of gunmen. two victims were shot here in front of 4171 paul street around 10 o'clock. one was an eight months pregnant woman aged 23. the other a 21-year-old man. both were rushed to temple university hospital and are going to survive their wounds. police say two gunmen opened fire from the corner about 30 feet away. the unborn child was not injured according to the mother to be who did not want her identity revealed. >> i was sitting down. then i heard gun shots and i got shot. after i got in the house i realized i got shot. the baby is fine. >> reporter: no problems with that, hm. >> no. >> reporter: police say the gunman fled in a white cadillac after firing a total of 11 shots. they spent the day retrieving surveillance video and they released it to the news media within the next 24 hours. a neighbor told me this was intended as a message. >> obviously this was a targeted event. they're standing outside that

house and they shoot from the corner at them, they're the only people out there, so we are looking at that and hopefully through some interviews we'll get further information. >> reporter: rick, police sources tell me there will be a release of that key surveillance video sometime in the next 24 hours. live in northeast philadelphia, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news. >> vernon thank you. philadelphia police also released new surveillance video in a triple shooting in olney last month. authorities say the male suspect walked to the area of 5900 north second street back on august 16th and for an unknown reason he started firing a gun two people heading to the store and another person just walking down the street were hit. still not clear what prompted the shooting. the suspect what driven away from the scene in what appears to be a into your dodge charger. >> philadelphia police also looking for two men who viciously beat a man outside a liquor store in juniata last movement surveillance cameras

captured the assailants approaching the victim as he walked into the wine and spirits shop on erie avenue august 17th. without warning the men ambushed him. watch. they kick and punch him. then hit him in the head with something. he was treated for injuries to his head and face. if you recognize either suspect or even the tow truck one of those men arrived in, please there it is call east detectives. >> a bicyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a car in bucks county this morning. chopper six overhead in the 2200 block of street road. detectives are still trying to determine just how it happened but the bike rider was rushed to the hospital for treatment. authorities say the driver did stay at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. >> now to a surprise announcement in a growing international crisis. the hungarian government says it will offer buses to take hundreds of migrants to the border with austria. earlier today more than a thousand frustrated migrants stormed out of a train station in budapest and set off on foot for germany.

rainfall, even some lightning associated with that to the north of hittites pressing over to the west and west of manheim as well. that's the direction and the general direction of these showers as they are pushing out of our viewing area. so we do have some good news as we head into the rest of our holiday weekend. right now in philadelphia coming in at 85 degrees after a high today in the city of n it's 76 up in the poconos along the coast in cape may, 79, 79 in lancaster. and 81 in wilmington. the dewpoints, it's the level of moisture in the air and right now the dewpoint numbers are still pretty high ranging anywhere from 65 to 70 degrees. you could feel the humidity overhead. the good news as we get into overnight tonight really and for the start of our saturday the humidity will lower and you will notice a nice and refreshing change. here's satellite6 along with action radar, we have this big ridge of high pressure over canada. this will continue to sink southward. knowles with this ridge of high pressure and this clockwise flow of air it suppresses the clouds and the

moisture to the south and west of our region. so, we've got holiday perfection on the way over the next three days, this ridge of high pressure stays in control with high pressure in place you have sinking air. it dries out the atmosphere. any time you have sinking hair -- sinking hair, the hair will probably sink in the humidity but sinking air you don't get clouds that form and you don't get any precipitation either. we're staying warm and we're staying dry with plenty of sunshine overhead. speaking of sunshine and something to do over the weekend, 3:30 tomorrow afternoon we've got low humidity, wall to wall sun as temple takes on penn state university. kickoff temperature 84 degrees and once we get into the fourth quarter, that number around 80. there's a moderate risk this weekend for rip currents. the ocean temperature coming in at 77 degrees but on the beach and on the sand over the weekend tomorrow breezy and bright, a high temperature of 77. it is beautiful by sunday and it's 79. gorgeous for labor day with a high temperature at 81 degrees. up north of the city in the poconos pleasant tomorrow, up

"action news" reporter trish hartman live at the shore, chad pradelli previewing made in america but first we have to know if the weather is cooperating. we have to get the latest forecast from meteorologist adam joseph. >> i have some good news no matter where you're going to be, the poconos, the city, the shore, this entire weekend, today was another hot day in philadelphia. the heat wave continued for another day. this is day six of heat wave number five. we hit a record tying high of 93 degrees and it's the 34th time philadelphia has hit 90 or above in 2015. now, there was supposed to be a front that passed through earlier today but kind of got stuck to our north and east and that is where the temperatures stayed a little bit cooler, 86 in trenton, 83 in beach haven, but south of that front, it did hit the 90's once again for most of the area including the lehigh valley, wilmington, lancaster and millville with a sea breeze at the shore, temperatures there stayed in the mid 80's.
