terrific today. >> chris: you know what else has been terrific is the tackling from nebraska. it's a totally different tackling football team that i witnessed last year. these guys are being taught to wrap their arms. no more body tackles going on by this team. they're good solid fundamental tackles. >> sean: out at the gun on second and 11. mangum throws it high and single coverage and mathews couldn't run under it. he's had a spirited battle with joshua kalou. >> chris: he's been impressive. when you put your corners on an island and ask them to match up a play man to man all day you have got to be physically tough and mentally tough because you are going to give up some plays. he bounces right back. >> sean: tanner mangum played in the spring game, then went to chili for two years.
7:01 pm
just got back in june working to get back in shape. third down and 12. and a great open field tackle by kalou to dump mitchell juergens who had room to run if he could have avoided the stop by the sophomore from houston josh kalou. byu now 3-13 on third down. they're going to punt into a stiff wind on fourth and seven and the defense will have to make stops because they have one time-out left. >> chris: they're a tough group. mark banker did a great job of forcing the throw. you don't have time to run a 12 yard route. >> sean: linehan. johnny rugby. boy that punt got killed by the wind. fair catch made by jordan westerkamp. 34 yards strong performance by linehan. let's take a look at today's

good hands play brought to you by allstate. hahnemann the interception. up in the air to catch it. both feet down. first career interception. >> chris: see if nebraska takes their time. if i'm them, i start working the clock and not snap the ball until there's about five seconds to go on the play clock once we get this game clock rolling. >> sean: cross takes the handoff. powers straight ahead. well, you just saw tiuilomo on the bench. wadsworth made the stop. >> chris: he missed it but had a chance for tfl the back field. wadsworth is in for the injured
7:03 pm
grader. he's doing his best. >> sean: this is where the suspensions and the lack of depth really start to hurt nebraska, the veteran armstrong taking his time snapped it with six. they're just playing the run now. cross smothered immediately by wadsworth and kaufusi. coach mendenhall will not use the last time-out here and the clock runs under 3:30 to go. >> chris: i think it wouldn't be bad time for a screen because mendenhall is selling out on run blitzes. if you have a good screen off man to man coverage or run blitz now is the time to throw it because i think you get big yards. >> sean: armstrong out of the gun, cross remains the running back. creeping up as if to blitz. they weren't bluffing. armstrong wide open.
7:04 pm
brandon reilly and a touchdown saving tackle by mica hahnemann. >> todd: great play call here. down the sideline. armstrong makes the completion. >> chris: it's all set up because it had so many screen plays and they're going right to that screen or the screen look knowing they're going to get blitz and man to man coverage and trusting armstrong will make the throw. a little different this year than last year. putting the game in armstrong's hands. >> sean: he's a veteran. this is his 22nd career start. 2:30 to go. cross, the ball carrier. and no time-out for byu. well, they can't allow another first down or it's just about game over.
7:05 pm
>> chris: with the offensive line of nebraska. some new guys in there in the fourth quarter doing what nebraska has done, they have taken over the line of scrimmage. >> sean: same five guys who have pretty much gone the whole way. utter, reeves, gates. the coach said the five guys who earned the starting spots, they going to play. wilbon stopped about three yards short of the first down. and a critical third down upcoming and now byu will use its last time-out. with 1:39 to go.

riley with the decision to make is going to try the field goal to make it a four-point game. on fourth and five with the win this time for brown. he hit a snap hook into the wind earlier. only 66% last year. again backup holder and broekemeier in for foltz. 41 yard try. another hook. and it is no good. so now a field goal would win it for byu. >> chris: as a field goal kicker you have to make adjustments. if you hook the first one you have to adjust so you don't hook the second one. a lot of times that comes from trying to hit the ball too hard. >> sean: shouldn't have had to feel like he had to kill it there from 41 with about a 20 mile an hour breeze behind him. hope still alive on the cougar sideline. now all they need is a field

7:15 pm
they lost their nose guard, linebacker and safety. the worst place. oh, by the way, yeah, and the heisman trophy candidate taysom hill. >> sean: i love, love mangum. 0-6 in this half. mangum goes for the short throw. caught out of bounds. one second on the clock. now they do have time to fire it in the end zone. it wasn't going to get them close enough i don't think for a field goal in this win. >> chris: i guess maybe just to get the ball closer to throw the hail mary. >> sean: also run the risk the game ends. they're fortunate there's one second on there. 29 straight season openers won by nebraska dating back to 1985.
7:16 pm
mike riley is going to use his last time-out. he doesn't want to be the guy who is the head coach when that streak ends. the last five nebraska coaches have all won their debut dating back to bob davani's win in 1962. last to lose the first game was bill jennings in 1957 against washington state. osbourne pellini all victorious as the nebraska sideline. well, i would think this is pretty easy call for the coach. those three tall guys, run down to the end zone, throw it up and hope somebody catches it. >> chris: as a defender you want to spike the ball down. not make a crazy play. tip it up in the air. how many times have we seen those go to the offense at the very end.

7:20 pm
devastating to think mike riley as he congratulations. >> coach i can't imagine how you're feeling. when you get your breath back, let me know. >> i'm good. >> todd: take us through that final play. >> just a senior receiver who has battled and a complete program player that's been there for us for a long, long time making critical plays and a backup quarterback right off his mission connecting and i just am so fortunate to coach these kids at byu and this team. my heart goes out to coach riley and nebraska. it was a heart-fought game. great college football game and great venue. it's college football. >> todd: when your quarterback taysom hill goes to the locker room for the second time what's the message to the team? >> i didn't talk to the team nor did our coaches. we made a point to say no big deal. they have trust in tanner.

7:22 pm
they get some fans they can take and pushups for a half hour a day. they come back most of them far away from football shape and to come back like he did and be this effective this quickly is remarkable. tanner mangum is with todd mcshay. >> todd: how did it happen man? >> honestly, i'm just so grateful to be on this team and honestly the guys on this team did it. i just came in to try to do my part. guys around me making plays. making it easy for me. i'm happy i came out with a win. >> todd: second time taysom goes out what goes through your mind? >> i just got back from my mission but i knew i would be ready to go. when the time came i was ready to step in and play. >> todd: the ball snapped. you eluded defender. what's going through your mind? explain it to us through your eyes. >> the coach and i, he told me

7:24 pm
spoke how he hurts for riley. they are very close friends. they have the shared connection of oregon state where mendenhall played and their woois are friends and mangum was 7-11. the defense to set it up as well. final score 33-28. good luck tonight to wisconsin and alabama if they can do better than that. saturday night football at 8:00 eastern time. so long from lincoln. >> shawn thanks a lot. not a bad way to start the season. it's easy for us to sit here and second guess however as a coach you have been in that spot. do you question calling the back to back time-outs that allowed them to set that play up?
7:25 pm
>> i don't because it's a first year staff they're in a critical situation. i'm sure they're telling those kids knock the ball down and they didn't do it because when you go back and look at this play. he bought time and threw the ball deep. there's plenty of red jerseys there. you can't try to catch it. you can't tip it up. coach riley are going to tell the kids we had the ball game won. bat the ball down. don't tip it, try to catch it. knock it up in the year. great win for bringam young. they want to play in the playoffs and think they have to do this being independent to get there. >> i question the time-out though. the majority of the staff was there at oregon state. you shouldn't have to call back to back time-outs. knock the ball down. don't let anyone get behind you but don't let the ball come in front of you for an easy reception. no one was in front of the receiver and no one tried to bat the ball down. so many defenders, not one of
7:26 pm
them tried to bat the ball down. no one played the ball. >> that being said you have been that player in the position. you have heard the coach tell you all the things and then you go out and the entire team forgets to do that. where is the disconnect because it's not the first time that we have seen something like this happen. don't call a time-out and they call a time-out or whatever it happens to be. with espn and all the shows we have on. we have seen this happen over the past couple of years multiple times. we say knock the ball down. if you're on the field that's the first thing you should do. find the football. identified it. go knock it down. don't let the receiver have a chance to make the play on the ball. >> a lot of times you simulate it but don't do it live and that's what gets you in trouble in the ball games. what a great win for nebraska not the two time-outs. bat the ball down. >> 29 consecutive openers. nebraska had one and what a way to have that streak come to an end. what a way to start the season
