ball at the shore. >> not a lot of wind and the temperature is right. i think the ocean's good. so,. >> reporter: perfect day. >> perfect day. >> reporter: and what better way to end the summer of 2015. these fabulous conditions drew thousands to the beach today. they just don't want summer to end. >> came down yesterday. going home today. going to be here for the last stretch. if it were up to my husband he would be here 11 o'clock to close down the beach. >> reporter: this group drove from harrisburg to enjoy the day at the shore, that's three hours of driving each way. >> something to do. >> reporter: you drove a long way. >> got up like 5 o'clock this morning. >> loaded the car, went got gas, ice, carried the kids down to the car. >> reporter: bit thus is the payoff and the reason folks are so sad to see summer end. >> i don't think it could be any better. nice cool breeze, hot sun, clear sky. doesn't get any better than that. >> reporter: good way to end the summer. >> you got that right. >> it's been a good summer. i've worked a lot so i didn't

here we are on creek road at the 42 freeway. making your way up to the walt whitman bridge. bigger delays on the garden state parkway up to 38, the atlantic city expressway you can expect a very slow go. closer to the city not looking too badly. taking a look outside at the ben franklin bridge you can see if you're heading in those lanes over into pennsylvania right now looks nice and clear. certainly good news for those of hugh are headed home right now. might get a little worse later this evening. taking a look at the vine street expressway that, too, is a nice ride in the westbound lanes if you're headed up to the schuylkill expressway right now. what we're seeing here is the closure from the made in america event. we have cleanup until tomorrow morning on the off ramp of the ben franklin -- to the ben franklin parkway as well as 20th street and eakins oval. that is closed so keep that in mind if you're out there. taking a look at speeds across the region, as you can see they're nice and high. our biggest slowdown is on the blue route, those northbound lanes coming up from delaware making your way from 95 up to around media swarthmore you

can expect a slow go of it right now. and taking a look at mass transit, no reported delays but we're on a holiday sunday schedule. back to you rick and sharrie. >> autumn, thank you so much. turning to accuweather now, it is a warm and sunny labor day, a perfect end to a holiday weekend. let's go back outside taking a look live over sky6 over atlantic city as you can see a lot of people still outside enjoying the beach and who can blame them. for the latest on conditions let's head outside to meteorologist steals cecily cec. >> saturday and sunday the high in philadelphia both days 88 degrees. today so far we hit 90. that's 9 degrees above normal and it's really warm except for right along the shore. when you get that sea breeze it has a big impact on temperatures. beach haven 81, the atlantic city airport 83, cape may 79 degrees but philadelphia, wilmington, allentown and reading holding at 90 degrees. trenton was at 90 the last hour.

now it's dropped down to 89 degrees. and dewpoints really just slightly humid. we have dewpoints generally most areas in the low 60's inland. when you get closer to the ocean, that ocean influence does pack up the dewpoints up into the 70's and dewpoints will be rising in the overnight hours. it's going to get more muggy tomorrow and it's certainly going to get a lot hotter. satellite6 along with action radar showing that high pressure that brought us the dry sunny weekend will become a classic heat pump for the next two days with winds out of the southwest. so that will bring more heat and humidity so tomorrow first day of school to a lot of kids. definitely dress them for a hot summer day. keep the fall clothes in the closet. they will not need those tomorrow. at 7 o'clock, little bit on the humid side, 72 degrees. by noon t-88 and by 4:00 when the kids are coming home, it will be about 93 degrees. we're looking at two days with near record heat. i'll talk more about that and track some much needed rain on the way coming up in the full

accuweather forecast. sharrie. >> okay, thanks, cecily. and as high heat and humidity make a late summer comeback, keep checking in with 6abc.com/weather. and click on the social media links to get updates from the "action news" weather team. >> in other news, we now know the names of the two people killed by a taxi in center city early this morning. they are amanda digirolamo of phoenixville and bryan botti of baltimore. both 25s old. they were in town for the made in america festival. the accident happened just after 4:30 a.m. at broad and arch streets. a witness told police it looked like the cab driver was going 50 miles an hour, 25 miles an hour over the speed limit by the way. the 41-year-old driver did stop at the scene. investigators are still waiting for toxicology results tonight. meantime a woman is recovering after she was shot by a pellet gun while walking near a trail on kelly drive. it happened just after midnight. the woman was walking near boathouse row when four or five men jumped out of the shadows and shot her with a bb

gun. the men took off. she was treated and released at hahnemann hospital. police believe this was a random incident. one person is recovering after a hit and run car crash in mantua township early this morning. it happened around 1:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of route 55 in mantua township. one car slammed into another, then took off. police tried to pull over the striking vehicle but lost sight of it near the delaware state line. one person was taken to the hospital in stable condition. >> funeral services are set for a family that died in a murder-suicide at their new jersey home last week. 29-year-old amanda morris brandon behara will be laid to rest today. investigators say he shot amanda and her two children before killing himself. a motive for the crime is unknown. right now crews are battling a forest fire in woodland township burlington county. chopper six was over the scene

a short time ago. the fire is at 80 acres right now but firefighters expect that to grow especially they say because of dry conditions. the fire is located near route 72 which is a popular route from long beach island. no roads are closed and no homes or buildings are in danger of burning at this point. >> and now to the latest on the visit of pope francis to philadelphia. tickets to see his speech in independence mall will be available starting tomorrow. at noon, 10,000 tickets will be up for grabs. you can get them online by visiting the word meeting of families web site. tickets are on a first come first serve basis and will be limited to four tickets per person. ticketing information is yet to be released for two other events. that's the festival of families and the pope's mass on the ben franklin parkway. we do know those events will be made available on wednesday, september 9th, day after tomorrow. a total of 30,000 tickets will be made available for the public events. >> it's not just roman catholics taking part in the

papal visit. christians of all denominations are invited to join in the event to strengthen their faith and to strengthen their families. we get that story from "action news" reporter katherine scott. >> catholic means universal. >> reporter: so in a sense we're all catholics says reverend terns d griffith. griffith is pastor of first african baptist church in south philadelphia. one of the first black baptist churches in the country. griffith who is president of the black clergy of philadelphia and vicinity was invited to speak at the world meeting of families congress later this month. >> i'm extremely pleased with the roman catholic church for really opening the doors and samegg saying come let's talk about it. >> reporter: it's the largest gathering of catholic families in the world but it is open to off. griffith will express concerns of the urban family including overcrowding, violence, pollution and poverty. themes which he says are relevant in cities across the world. >> i think instability in our

>> more european leaders are opening the doors to their countries for hundreds of thousands of refugees streaming across german borders. france has agreed to take in a thousand people and british prime minister david cameron says the uk will settle up to 20,000 syrian refugees over the next five years. meantime a warning from the united nations official. the head of the organization's geneva office says 4 million syrian refugees will flood europe unless the world community helps syria's neighboring countries. a top aide to new york governor andrew cuomo was slot in the head this morning during preparations for a parade. 43-year-old carey gabay was

walking with his brother in brooklyn just before the start of the west indian day parade when they passed an argument where shots were being fired. he was struck by at least one bullet and is in critical condition tonight. four other people were injured. gabay is the first deputy council to the governor. he and his wife are expecting their first child. >> the dentist who killed a popular lion in africa is speaking out publically for the first time. dr. walter palmer has been in seclusion since july when he became the target of international outrage. now palmer says he plans to go back to work tomorrow. abc's elizabeth hur has the story. >> reporter: breaking his silence and insisting he was not in hiding, dr. walter palmer says he's been with his family and friends for the past two months keeping a low profile for their safety after someone vandalized his florida vacation home and his family received death threats. in an interview with the minneapolis star tribune and the associated press, palmer says this has been especially hard on my wife and daughter

>> people who work for federal contractors will get paid sick leave thanks to a new executive order signed by president obama. he marked labor day with a speech at a major union rally and breakfast in boston. well, the white house says the new order will benefit 300,000 workers who do not currently get paid leave. the order makes those workers eligible in two years. president obama also says he wants congress to work together to offer it to all americans. >> find a way to make paid leave paid family and medical leave a reality for all americans. that's something we should be doing. >> the u.s. chamber of commerce is threatening to sue saying the president has overstepped his authority. >> health check at 5::a new study finds a disturbing new trend surrounding e-cigs. teens ar are using them to get high.

they're vaping marijuana. the device masks the drug's odor. e-cig usage has tripled between 2013 and 2014. >> a new jersey couple is home months after giving birth and getting stuck in portugal. arriving on a private medical transport plane, they touched down in teterboro yesterday afternoon. well, fred and kim spratt got permission from doctors to go on vacation to portugal when unexpectedly she went into labor in may. twins, a boy and a girl were born 13 weeks premature. the homecoming, however, was an emotional one because the little boy did not survive. >> we feel like we're coming home incomplete. you know, we're happy to be home but it does feel like there's a part that's missing. >> the family had been in a fight with the insurance company he which initially denied the request to pay for medical transport plane. that decision was then reversed late last week. the daughter, hayden, still faces a long road ahead and will have to stay in a

we're doing everything we can to give you the best experience possible. because we should fit into your life. not the other way around. >> union pride was on full display in wilmington delaware today. this was the scene for the city's annual labor day parade. participants stepped off from 12th and king streets at 10:00 a.m. this morning and marched until 2:00 in the afternoon. hundreds of local union members were among those taking part. >> time now for a check of the accuweather forecast. meteorologist cecily tynan back from vacation. she looks all spry and everything. [laughter] >> well rested. >> well rested. >> happy. >> ready to talk about the weather. summer definitely holding on a few more days. temperatures right now really tell the story along the i-95 corridor and areas north and west, we're holding at 90 degrees. you get closer to the shore with that sea breeze, temperatures are dropping, beach haven 80, atlantic city airport, 83 and cape ma

may 79 degrees and nora because definitely blowing in the wind earlier during the newscast and you can see the wind speeds along the shore are pretty high, generally 13 to 16 miles per hour. inlands not quite as strong, generally about five to 10 miles per hour. but we will be getting the winds of change over the next two days. satellite6 and action radar showing really not a cloud in the sky. that's thanks to high pressure that's right over us but what this high pressure will do, it will nudge a little bit farther to the east. we get what's known as a return flow, winds out of the southwest. that's a warm and more humid flow and that's what will be moving in tomorrow and wednesday. tonight your labor day night t-it will be clear, it will be a little bit on the muggy side and definitely a warm night. 70 degrees in philadelphia, allentown 62, wilmington 66, trenton 67, millville 65 and cape may dropping to 68 degrees. the day planner showing tomorrow loads of sunshine and definitely heating up. at 8 o'clock, 75 degrees. we bump it up to 85 by

11 o'clock, 92 by 2:00 and by 5 o'clock, 94 degrees. the record high for tomorrow is 96 and future tracker showing that the humidity will be a little bit higher tomorrow than it was today. so, that will add a degree or two to the air temperature. it will feel like 95 degrees in philadelphia by 5 o'clock and then on wednesday is when the humidity really gets oppressive. over the weekend on saturday night tropical storm grace was formed but if you look at this, you can see that this is not a very well organized storm. not much rotation with this and a maximum sustained wind of 45 miles per hour. it's moving to the west at about 18 miles per hour. it will continue to do that but then it will be encountering some dry air and wind shear and the latest information looks like it will be dissipating even before it hits the lesser antilles. certainly no threat to the u.s. but i'll continue to track the tropics. this is typically when things really heat up as far as the hurricane season. five day at 5:00 slowing tomorrow 94 degrees, summer

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> hello again. monica will be along at 6:00 sharrie williams joining us tonight and here's what's happening on "action news" this evening. residents in one southwest philadelphia neighborhood are forced out of their homes by fast moving flames. we're live with the very latest coming up.

several drivers woke up to find their cars smashed along a busy roadway. we'll explain how it all happened. and the presidential candidates hit the campaign trail on this labor day. we have the results of a new poll that shows that a frontrunner may be losing support. >> now the details. four families are out of their homes tonight following a fast moving fire in southwest philadelphia. it started just before 9:30 this morning near 49th and saybosaybrook avenues. the flames quickly spread to several nearby row home. wendy saltzman is live outside the red cross house in powelton where some of the fire victims are staying tonight. wendy. >> reporter: sharrie, five houses were destroyed when that fire jumped from row house to row house around 9:00 a.m. this morning. the red cross has now stepped in. they're providing these families with food shelter and clothing including housing two of them here at the red cross house. >> the fire started down the street and somebody knocked on our door so we all ran out and got everybody out the house.

>> reporter: miss glen's house was a few feet away from becoming another casualty in a fast moving fire in southwest philadelphia this morning. >> scary. i got my children out. it was scary. as long as it didn't touch our house. >> reporter: as neighbors knocked on doors to make sure everyone was safe firefighters worked to fight the blaze. >> the neighbors around on cynthia street who came around and alerted some of the neighbors that were out here that it was a fire in the back. >> reporter: when fire trucks arrived neighbors tell "action news" the flames were pouring out of the first and second floors of this multi-home structure. >> all we seen was billows of smoke going up the street. the fire trucks was breaking outer windows from one ends to the other. >> reporter: although no official cause has been released neighbors say something sparked in the backyard of one of the homes catching dry brush and trees on fire. >> devastating, you know, because so many people that are without somewhere to live, you know. one person just purchased the

property there. >> reporter: barbara smack says she was awaken the to the sounds much multiple fire engines arriving on the scene. >> luckily it was no ones in the homes. everybody did get out. it was only one person in one of the houses but when they knocked on the door they did get him out safely. >> reporter: and today all of those people are countering their blessings but although five homes were lost, no one lost their lives. >> i'm just grateful to god that no one did get hurt. and once i did get myself under control i just praised god that, you know, i was not affected by it. >> reporter: again there is no official word yet on what touched off that fire. fortunately everybody did get out of their houses safely and without injury. live in powelton, i'm wendy saltzman, channel6 "action news." >> all right, wendy, thank you. police in wilmington are investigating a shooting this afternoon that critically injured a man and may have also injured an innocent bystander. officers found a male victim along the 600 block of west sixth street with a gunshot wound to the chest.

a woman also in the area told police something injured her back. detectives are trying to determine if she was grazed by a bullet or shrapnel. the assemblyman being treater at christiana hospital. police are still trying to determine who the shooter is. from our new jersey news room tonight, princeton firefighters battled a two alarmer along the unit block of cameron court today. it started just after 8:00 a.m. in a home that appears to be under construction. the fire grew to two alarms before crews got the upper hand. the cause is under investigation tonight. fortunately no one was hurt. >> a newark man is facing criminal charges for allegedly selling drugs out of his home. it's a story our delaware news room has been following. authorities say they found marijuana, mushrooms and prescription pills inside the home of 20-year-old joshua gaines. detectives raided the residence along the 200 block of smith hill road last week. they also reportedly found several weapons including an assault rifle and a sawed off shot gun.

gaines was released after posting more than a $10,000 bail. a driver is being tested for dui after crashing into several cars along south street earlier this morning. well, this is how it looked along the 1000 block near the super fresh grocery store. police say the driver slammed into two cars, causing the vehicles to smash into four other parked cars early this morning. the impact was so strong two suv's got stuck together and a tow truck had to pull them apart. fortunately, no one was injured. and remember, when breaking news or severe weather happens, you can join the action. e-mail your photos and videos to join the action at 6abc.com or use the #6abcaction on social media. >> pope francis is taking on the catholic church's handling of marriage annulments. he says the current system is costly and can be unfair. tomorrow he'll lay out new

guidelines for priests to follow. he he says the commission of can nonloyer has been spending the last year studying ways to simplify the process. that process can take years and cost hundreds of dollars. francis has already said annulments should be free. we are just 18 days from the pope's arrival in philadelphia for the world meeting of families. and you can find the latest information about the papal visit by going to 6abc.com/pope. we've got the latest details about event tickets and the newly announced parades as they're released. you can also find the list of highway closures, the map of security zones and a list of prohibited items. >> lawyers for kentucky county clerk kim davis have filed an emergency motion with the federal judge to have her released from jail. davis was thrown into jail last thursday after being found in contempt of court. she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses after the supreme court legalized gay marriage nationwide. well, the judge has said that

davis will stay behind bars until she complies with the law but her lawyers say she will not waver. >> now to the 2016 race for the white house. as the candidates for president hit the campaign trail hard on this labor day, new poll numbers show hillary clinton may be in trouble. abc's kenneth moton is live in washington, d.c. tonight with that story. hey, kenneth. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, rick. yes, it definitely wasn't a day off for most of the candidates speaking at union events as they try to gain ground in those primary and caucus states. hillary clinton laboring for votes in iowa, new poll numbers have her percentage dropping in that state and in new hampshire where bernie sanders is leading by nine points. >> i think the secretary's people are getting very nervous about the kind of energy and enthusiasm our campaign is bringing forth. >> reporter: in the nbc marist poll vice president joe biden is at 16 percent in new hampshire, 20's percent in iowa. biden was on the ground in

pittsburgh at a labor day parade getting that all too familiar question from the crowd, are you going to run? >> i'm going run part of this parade. >> reporter: in a speech to the politically important united steelworkers the vp jokingly said the media will compare his pro-labor union remarks to something bernie sanders would say. >> pop lift biden got up and said dark you know -- they'll probably say competing with bernie sanders you're doing a hell of a job by the way with bernie sanders. >> reporter: gop candidates were busy monday. over the weekend several were in new hampshire where donald trump has a 16-point lead. trump who is seven points ahead in iowa spent the holiday off the campaign trail. in a hypothetical general election matchup with clinton for the first time that new nbc marist poll has trump beating clinton by five points in iowa. and if you can't beat them, invite them. donald trump has accepted an invite from ted cruz to speak

so, what if you're wrong? and they can't be trusted? senator coons, don't trust iran. vote this down. >> two texas high school football players could face criminal charges for tackling a referee. they blind sided him during a game on friday hitting him twice actually. as you can see one of the john jay high school players hits him from behind taking him down. then the other dives into him. espn analysts say there's no question that this was done on purpose. >> they deliberately did it and it was targeted. >> nobody in texas condones this and this is something nobody -- everyone i've talked to has never seen. >> the hits came after two of their teammates were ejected from the game. both of the players are suspended from the team and school. there are reports that the referee is waiting to press charges. texas is one of 23 states which have laws making assaulting a referee a crime.

i want to point this out. 102 degrees the record high on this date back in 1881. that's the highest temperature ever recorded in philadelphia during september. so, nowhere near the record high but allentown hit 91 degrees today tying the record high there. currently quakertown 88 degrees. martins creek 91 and warrington 87, saint davids 84. chester and center city holding at 91 degrees and south jersey as you get closer to the coast temperatures drop. in cinnaminson it's 91, in hammonton it's 88 but the boardwalk in atlantic city down to 79 degrees and in delaware hockessin and dover 85 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing this is going to be the big weather maker over the next two days as high pressure very strong, the winds around it clockwise so we'll be getting winds out of the southwest. so that will really bump up temperatures over the next two days and tonight it will keep us clear, warm and a little bit on the muggy side.

62 degrees in the cooler suburbs. center city dropping down to 70 degrees. so, for the next two days we will be very close to the record highs. looks like we will be shy about 2 degrees on both days. tomorrow i'm forecasting a high of 94 degrees, the record high 96 set back in 1939. and wednesday i'm forecasting 92 and the record high 94 set way back in 1884. wednesday, though, the humidity will be even higher than tomorrow. so, i really think wednesday will be the least comfortable day this week. if you're in allentown tomorrow, sizzling sunshine and noticeably humid and even a little bit hotter than today with a high up to 93 degrees. if you're lucky enough to still be down the shore tomorrow, enjoy it with that sea breeze in the afternoon. a lot cooler than inland, 84 degrees with loads of sunshine. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow 94 degrees. more humid tomorrow but the oppressive humidity arrives on wednesday with a high of 92 degrees. that would be three days in a row of temperatures in the 90's. officially making it the sixth

program. with ducis rodgers, meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪ >> monday night, jim is off, i'm monica malpass. in the news beachgoers safer sar the final few hours at the shore. a crash with a motorcycle ends with this fire ball on the schuylkill expressway. the big story on "action news" tonight is a taxi crash that killed two pedestrians in center city today. both the victims were 25 years old. they were crossing broad and arch when they were struck by the cab early this morning. witnesses tell police that speed may have been a factor. "action news" reporter walter perez live in phoenixville where one of the victims lived and walter what are the details here. >> reporter: monica, we're about a block away from the family home of the woman who was killed and as you would imagine the family is absolutely distraught at this hour. the investigation is really just getting under way but the bottom line is two innocent young lives ended tragically

this morning. investigators tell us the victims were 25-year-old amanda digirolomo phoenixville and bryan botti of baltimore mad who was also 25. the two were reportedly in town for the made in america concerts and it was right around 4:30 this morning when they were crossing broad street near arch when they were hit by a taxicab. we're told digirolamo and botti went airborne on impact landing about 100 feet away. amanda was pronounced dead at the scene while brian died at the hospital a short time later. witnesses told police the cab was barreling down broad street is a high rate of speed. >> allegedly and again this is preliminary, the witness approximated their speed at being over the speed limit. that's all i can give you at this point. that has not boone confirmed. >> reporter: the cab driver is described as a 41-year-old man from philadelphia. police say he did stop at the scene but was soon hospitalized with chest pains. no charges have been filed so far and we're told the cabb
