making news in america this morning, runway inferno. a plane packed with passengers going up in flames only seconds away from taking off. overnight, the passengers talking about the terrifying ordeal and the captain credited with saving lives. exclusive interview. hillary clinton sitting down with david muir. what she's saying about the e-mail investigation, donald trump and the moment that nearly brought her to tears. frantic call. a woman dials 911 begging to be saved from her own sons. >> my children are trying to kill me. >> how the parents were able to get away. >> and a new era in late night laughs. stephen colbert's first show after taking over david letterman with some big-time guests.

well, good wednesday morning. we begin with that scary scene at an american airport. a jumbo jet catching fire moments before takeoff. >> overnight witnesses posting incredible pictures on social media, flames and smoke billowing from the jumbo jet. travelers on the plane and in the airport watching it all unfold. inferno on the runway. >> mayday, mayday, 2276 request fire services. >> 2276 fire services on the way. >> thick black smoke rising from the wing of a 777 in las vegas. the british air ways plane bound for london packed with passengers and moments away from takeoff. the left engine bursting into flames. >> we could smell the flame and actually looked on the left-hand side of the window and could see black smoke. >> travelers capturing incredible images. one showing the blaze from a passenger's view on another

plane. the engine clearly on fire, smoke engulfing most of the jumbo jet's fuselage. >> i wanted to get off the lien and just be alive. >> overnight they're describing scenes of panic. one says there was a lot of screaming as flames filled the cabin. the crew pulled the emergency slides and all 157 passengers and 13 crew mens making it off safely. >> had to jump down and see the flames and smoke and that's when it hit me, pretty scary. >> one passenger crediting the captain for his quick thinking ordering everyone off the plane. >> if he hasn't have done what he did, i think there would have been a number of fatalities today. >> this morning the faa says the plane experienced engine failure. as the investigation into why it happened gets under way. right now we're told 14 people were sent to the hospital. authorities are saying those injuries were minor. well now to that exclusive interview with hillary clinton. the democratic front-runner apologizing for the first time over her private e-mails. >> she sat down with abc's david

muir and answered a wide range of questions with more now we're joined by abc's bazi kanani in washington. bazi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis, good morning, reena. hillary clinton says she should have done way better job of answering questions earlier about her use of a private e-mail account while secretary of state but she insists it was just a mistake. for the first time an apology from hillary clinton for using a private e-mail account for government business. >> that was a mistake. i'm sorry about that. i take responsibility. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with abc's david muir, clinton stressed there is no criminal investigation into her e-mail use and said she wants to testify before congress about it. >> i did not send or receive any information that was marked classified at the time. >> reporter: the democratic front-runner facing possible competition from joe biden said he deserves to test the waters and criticized republican front-runner donald trump for his showmanship. >> he won't tell you how he

would do anything. >> reporter: then an emotional moment when talking about her late mother. >> and she told me every day you've got to get up and fight for what you believe in no matter how hard it is. i'm going to fight for all the people like my mother who need somebody in their corner and they need a leader who cares about them again. >> reporter: on the republican side a humorous exchange for jeb bush appearing on stephen colbert's debut as host of "the late show". >> i've been using it since 1994. it connotes excitement. it connotes. >> reporter: donald trump also tries humor in his latest attack on bush on instagram. >> need some low energy? >> hsa in some companies, some companies don't but i think the norm ought to be -- >> jeb. >> reporter: now donald trump and hillary clinton will both be here in d.c. today to speak about the iran nuclear deal. clinton will explain her support for it while trump will rally against it.

reena, kendis. >> we'll be watching for that. bazi kanani live in washington, thanks so much. and one more note from washington, where president obama has secured enough votes to avoid an embarrassing veto on the iran nuclear deal as congress returned from summer recess, four more democrats announced their support for the agreement blocking republicans from passing a resolution of disapproval. that said, donald trump and ted cruz will attend a rally on clal today organized by the tea party to voice opposition to the deal. >> the county clerk in kentucky who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is out of jail. the judge gave kim davis an order that she is not to interfere with deputy clerks in her office while granting marriage licenses. her lawyer refused to say whether she would defy the courts again. she had cheering supporters along with mike huckabee, presidential candidate. >> i just want to give god the glory. his people have rallied and you are a strong people. >> the courage of her

convictions was more important than simply even her own freedom. >> davis won't return to the office until friday or monday. overseas now, some new developments overnight in the deadly bombing in bangkok. a key suspect has admitted to meeting someone and handing them a backpack with a bomb. the suspect has not been charged but police say he's part of the network that carried out the bombing that killed 20 people last month. new concerns about the flood of refugees from the middle east heading for europe. in hungary more chaos erupted at the borders as refugees broke through police lines for the second time this week. u.n. officials say hungary will need international help with 42,000 more asylum seekers expected to enter the country in the next ten days. australia said it will accept 12,000 syrian refugees. it's also joining coalition air strikes against isis in syria. >> united airlines, a focus of a

growing scandal this morning. the ceo and two other airline officials have resigned amid a corruption investigation. they're being investigated for allegedly giving preferential treatment to the former chairman of the new york and new jersey port authority which operates the airports in the new york city area. at issue is whether the airlines started a dedicated nonstop route to south carolina where the port authority chairman had a vacation home. just to win favor with him in negotiations. united says it's cooperating with the investigation. well, some extreme weather rolling across the nation. you see the storm system right there. stretching from texas all the way to the midwest. some locally heavy downpours in texas and arkansas could bring up to 2 inches of rain to some areas. and it will be a scorcher and humid days in the northeast, in the 90s again today in philly, d.c., boston and hartford. west coast, triple-digit temperatures. 101 in burbank and 104 in sacramento.

well, parents are scrambling in seattle as teachers announce they're striking on the first day of school. last-minute contract negotiations broke down over pay, evaluations and other issues. teachers and support staff will be on the picket lines instead of in the classroom.

53,000 students attend class in the seattle district. also on the west coast, apple making its big annual product reveal today. it's an upgrade year for the iphone so we'll see improvements on the iphone 6s and maybe 5c as well. there's expected to be news about apple tv. an upgrade to its set-top box. new ipad models may be announced as well as enhancement foss the personal assistant siri. the u.s. markets open higher this morning after investors came back from the long weekend with a bang. the dow jones industrial average had its second best day of the year. up 390 points. nasdaq rose 128. s&p also had its second best day of the year up 48. investors are pts as worried about china's economy now and this morning, asian markets also reallied with the nikkei surging 7%. exciting news. google about to start testing a fresh grocery delivery service, the trial will begin in two cities including san francisco.

next up a classic example of simply being in the right place at the right time. the place was the water off the coast of washington state and it was definitely the right time for a woman and her kayaking guide to be caught in the middle of a pod of orca whales. >> look at this. some of the enormous animals so close it appeared they could have touched them. scary. >> it was a thrill but scary. a little girl she ended up in quite a tight spot while trying to impress big sister. >> so 6-year-old juliet grimes had to be rescued from a claw machine at a pizza parlor near dallas. she managed to crawl through the prize chute into the bin of toys but couldn't get out. it was all because her sister dared her to do it. >> i haven't told my mom yet but maybe it was a double dog dare. >> both girls were grounded and mom believes they learned their lesson. no sweet as apparently for awhile. >> and no toys like that. oh, man, ha picture was funny.
