hi, jeff. >.>> reporter: hey, guys we're live in atlanta, two hours before the eagles season opener here against the atlanta falcons. of course chip kelly this off season famously said they want to win a championship and he he will leave no stone unturned until they get that done. clip wasn't kidding. of course he completely turned over this roster, new starters at quarterback, running back, of course cornerback byron maxwell, their pricey new free agent corner six years, $63 million and maxwell believes this team is capable of getting to the super bowl. let's take a look at chip kelly and the eagles arriving here in atlanta at the georgia dome around 4:30. obviously this team very excited, the much anticipated opener for your philadelphia eagles. after a three-one preseason where they led the nfl in touchdowns, points, yards, rushing yards, you name at this time, a lot of excitement building here. of course we will get our first look at sam brad formed he was a hundred percent

of the university. lamb may be connected to a seconds murder. police continues to investigate and classes have been canceled there through tomorrow. >> ♪ >> turning to other news tonight now, new concerns about the security of pope francis when he comes to the united states. over the weekend, the chairman of the house homeland security committee revealed that officials have disrupted a plot and given the way the pontiff likes to mingle with his followers, they say the risks are real. "action news" reporter david henry is live at eakins oval tonight with more on the story. david. >> reporter: yeah, rick, multiple law enforcement agencies led by the secret service are doing everything they can to keep the pope safe here when he celebrates mass on the parkway. in the meantime a security expert we talked with says he's not surprised to hear he there's already been a threat. >> really doesn't surprise me he. we see a lot of these incidents when we have a national security event.

>> reporter: jack is a former high ranking official of the u.s. homeland security department. he says high profile events like the pope's visit tend to attract individuals who want to make a name for themselves or just are intender on doing harm. >> looking at who the individual is, what he's saying, where he's saying it, who he's saying it to and what he's doing. >> reporter: yesterday on abc's this week the head of the house homeland security committee revealed the government has already headed off a threat against the pope. >> we have disrupted one particular case and in particular but as that day approaches i think we're all very -- will be very vigilant to protect him as he comes into the united states. >> reporter: workers have been busy assembling the venue on the parkway where the pope will join a family festival saturday and celebrate mass sunday. eakins oval is now surrounded by a 6-foot high security fence and multiple security cameras and communications links have been going up. but the majority of the security work is going on behind the scenes as agents

christopher sydlowski was killed when he lost control of his pickup truck early yesterday morning. lease say sid when you ski's truck flipped as many as five times after hitting a digit three others were inside the vehicle at the time. one was seriously injured. residents who live near the scene of the crash tell "action news" that this isn't the first time a car has crashed in the area. police say they found beer cans in the truck and scattered around the scene butter it's still too early to tell if alcohol was a factor here. a person was killed today by an amtrak train in delaware county. chopper 6hd was over the scene at about 7:30 this morning in prospect park. train service was shut down for about 90 minutes while police investigated. no word yet on the person's identity or why he or she was on the tracks in the first place. >> a tense situation in north philadelphia when a gunman held police at bay. it unfolded about 6:00 a.m. when police served a warrant at a home here in the 1500 block of west lehigh a the suspect refused to come out,

in fact barricaded himself inside. several other people were in the home as well t swat times responded and at one point fired several shots. no one was hurt and the suspect was taken into custody after about a half hour. >> monday night let's get a check of our "action news" traffic report for you now. >> take it live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. welcome back. >> welcome back. >> thank you. let's do this thing again, rick and monica and unfortunately the punches keep coming in king of prussia this evening. now there's another crash, this one on 202 in the northbound lanes approaching the schuylkill expressway. that's the sea of headlights stacked up behind this fender-bender taking out the center lane as you head northbound toward the mall. we were already jammed in this area because the schuylkill expressway itself is jammed solid eastbound from 202 on into near gladwyne. that's where we started the afternoon with an overturned vehicle crash. now long gone but a lot of speeds still in the teens and 20's. westbound was heavy from the gaper delay from that earlier accident. 95 southbound still on the brakes from cottman into girard. we still have that trash truck

not bad, 76, in the lower 70's there in cape may. you look at the wind speeds and it has been a bit on the breezy side today. you have those winds sustained anywhere from about 8 miles per hour in trenton to as high as 15 there in the city, 13 miles per hour in wilmington but we have that west to northwesterly wind today which is what is helping to dry out the atmosphere and provide us with plenty of sunshine today. here's satellite6 along with action radar. a couple things that we're tracking here. there's an area of low pressure that is currently exiting coastal sections of new england and also maine and then we have high pressure that has essentially set up shop across the ohio valley and points to our south. he association that's why today the pressure gradient in between these two funneling those winds and breeze today out of the northwest but with high pressure in control for the majority of our work week ahead, we've got a nice dry stretch on the way with comfortable conditions. the chance of rain this week, well, zero probability of finding that, tuesday zero, same thing right through saturday we're getting the goose egg with temperatures nice and comfortable and dry

relatively low humidity levels as well. the call from accuweather for the rest of tonight, clear and cool. the winds will subside dropping down to 49 in allentown, 58 in philadelphia for the overnight low, 60 at the boardwalk and 61 the overnight low in cape may. stepping outside tomorrow, well, expect a bright and sunny smart. 8:00 a.m., 62, 72 at 11:00 a.m. plenty of sunshine, 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, 81 and 83 is the number at 5 o'clock in the evening. the five day at 5:00 showing you sunny, it's a touch warmer tomorrow and at 83 degrees, still no complaints. a baby blue sky midweek and at 86 degrees. more sunshine on the way on thursday which will get our temperature up to 86. 10 degrees above the norm by friday. keep in mind we should be in the upper 70's this time of year. 87 on friday, so still staying dry a-few clouds around on saturday and at 87. so, we're dry for now. we'll let you know if that stretch will continue as we get into saturday or sunday i should say. that answer coming up in the next half hour, guys. >> okay. >> thank you so much melissa. students from six high

>> ♪ >> hello again and here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. explosive wildfires burning in northern california threatening the lives of thousands of residents and their homes and there's no end in sight. a barricaded man holds philadelphia police at bay for several hours in port richmond and a local company he is now

promising beautiful music during the papal events next week. katherine scott shows us how. >> and now to a very dangerous and desperate situation out west in california. two wildfires are burning in the northern part of the state tonight. forcing the evacuation of more than 23,000 people. >> hundreds of structures have already been destroyed. one person is dead and thousands of firefighters obviously working around the clock. >> the fire in the northern california foot hills has burned 71,000 acres so far and it's only 35 percent contained. >> and just 20 miles north of the famed napa valley the lake fire which started saturday has already consumed 61,000 acres and it shows no signs of letting up. more now from abc's lauren lister. >> reporter: an eerie silence in middletown, california today. the aftermath from this scene saturday night. the valley fire turning homes, cars, entire lives into ash and scorched grounds. >> holy cow, that is fast. >> reporter: retired

firefighter don lopez volunteered to go back on the front lines this fire season. he told abc's matt gutmann that he was working on saturday when he heard that his hometown was burning. after an exhausting 24 hours shift, he went back to see what remains. >> devastated. driving down the street all my neighbors are gone. >> reporter: but he was stuned to find his home still there. >> my daughter on the other hand lost everything. >> reporter: nearby firefighters are still desperately trying to battle back the flames. some of them so tired they collapsed in this drive way. >> potential for just explosively growing fires is really all coming true. >> reporter: the valley fire forced 20,000 evacuations and officials are still tallying the damage. for south, the butte fire near sacramento today is your passing 70,000 acres burned with 135 homes destroyed and thousands more at risk.

>> when combined with years of drought, it means that the conditions are worse. they're drier and therefore these fires are acting more aggressively more unpredictablely. >> reporter: after few hours sleep lopez snapped a picture of a friend's home to prove it's still standing, then heads back to work. >> today is a new day and time to go back on the fire line 'cause that's what i do. i'm a fireman. >> reporter: it will be a rough recovery for the people in those towns and many cases power and water service is out and it could be a month or more before crews can get it restored. lauren lister abc news, los angeles. >> and worlds news tonight with david muir will have much more on the fire fight in central california. you can watch that that following "action news" at 6:00. >> major cleanup effort is under way in parts of our arizona following flash flooding there. the rain fell hard and fast in the area southwest of phoenix. drivers became trapped on the highway and many had to bail out of their cars. today crewsed to several

vehicles from the muddy mess. still not clear how long it will take to clear the area but luckily no one has been hurt. >> the man wanted in that deadly traffic stop shooting of a kentucky state trooper was himself shot and killed by police today. authorities say they tracked down joseph johnson shanks in a rural wooded area this morning. they say he there they opened fire when he refused to drop his weapon. johnson shank center city accused of gunning down 31-year-old trooper joseph cameron ponder after fleeing a traffic stop last night. ponder had been on the force less than a year. >> back here at home, a five hour standoff between philadelphia police and a port richmond resident ended peacefully this afternoon. chopper six was over the scene along the 3000 block of agate street. authorities blocked off the street around 10:00 a.m. swat members surrounded the area after reports of a person under the influence of narcotics barricaded himself in a residence and refused to come out. after several hours the man was brought out and taken to episcopal hospital for

evaluation. no one was hurt. authorities in west goshen township wander the public to look at the two men in these surveillance pictures. they say the suspects walked into the micro tell inn along willow brook lane in west chester early this morning armed with guns. the pair stole money from the motel then took off. no one was injured but detectives want to get these armed suspects behind bars before they strike again. >> six community projects in wilmington delaware are getting the green light tonight thanks to a new fund. $193,000 will go to what's being called the neighborhood fund for the city's third district. some of the new initiatives include services for job seekers, neighborhood planning, funding a boys and girls club and more. the money was set up through the delaware community foundation. >> ♪ >> all right, we are just 11 days away from the arrival of pope francis in philadelphia. and preparations for the historic visit are kicking into high gear tonight. foundation for the massive stage for pope francis' outdoor mass and the festival of families. they're also getting all of the security fencing ready to install. expressway. which remains crowded eastbound as it has been all afternoon after an early afternoon overturned vehicle crash. you can see slowing as well on the northbound blue route headed towards mid-county and on the eastbound pa turnpike from past valley forge out to fort washington. our crash along 202 northbound by the schuylkill is off to the side but it's still slow there as well so everywhere you look red and yellow on the map this afternoon. in southwest philadelphia, still have that fire location along lindbergh boulevard at grays avenue. that means the 36 trolley is being detoured over woodland avenue and 95 southbound still extra heavy from this point approaching cottman into girard where we still have that broken down trash truck in the right lane. rick and monica, traffic stinks. that's the bottom line. >> police in new york city looking for this woman tonight caught on camera punching a 10-year-old boy. happened inside of a deli last month. witnesses say she began yelling at the boy after he did not thank the cashier for giving him a bag. she got physical, leaving the boy with a bloody nose. the boy also said the woman called him bad names. police hope this surveillance video helps them track down the woman responsible. u.s. attorney general loretta lynch said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues into soccer's world governing organization. fifa has been under investigation for corruption and money laundering. seven people including several top officials were arrested in zurich back in may. today lynch says new evidence has surfaced that could lead to even more arrests.
