huge outdoor events. unfortunately they present tempting targets for people who want to do harm. >> well, philadelphia is a venue where there are going to be the most people. it's a venue where if things can go wrong it would be here because it's outdoor and because there's going to be millions of individuals. >> reporter: workers have been busy assembling the venue for the pope's two events on the parkway. already a 6-foot security fence surrounds eakins oval and the work is being done under the watchful eye of homeland security. workers have installed multiple surveillance cameras and secured communications links vital work to protect the pope and the public. yesterday the chairman of the house homeland security committee revealed agents have already headed off a potential threat. >> we have disrupted one particular case and in particular, but as that date approaches i think we're all very -- will be very vigilant to protect him as he comes into the united states. >> reporter: as a former high ranking official of u.s.

homeland security, jack tomacio says it's not surprising that a potential threat has already been uncovered. the concern is that the threat came from a lone wolf and not a terror organization. individuals are harder to detect and track. >> in some cases these individuals are people that are sitting in their basement just tapping away on their computer writing and saying bad things about the pope or the government. >> reporter: he says government agents are constantly monitoring the internet and social media for signs of potential threats. it's not easy to sort the real thing from idle chatter. >> you just try to track them down and you see what -- you kind of connect the dots and see if there's anything really there or if this is just white noise. >> reporter: a festival city is emerging here on the parkway. the secret service and vatican security are doing everything they can to keep the pope and the public safe here. but unfortunately this venue presents a more tempting target possible target for anybody with evil intent.

"action news" reporter nora muchanic is live at the school in warrington tonight with the details. nora. >> reporter: rick, school is closed today because of the jewish holiday, but counselors were available here on campus to talk with students who wanted to discuss the death of a classmate killed in a rollover crash that also injured three other students. this is the result of that terrible crash, a pickup truck that landed upside down after rolling over as many as five times. it happened on the 700 block of limekiln pike in new

britain around 1:00 a.m. sunday morning. killed in the crash was the driver, 17-year-old christopher sydlowski of warrington. both he and his front seat passenger were ejected from the vehicle. >> my heart just aches for his family. i mean, 17-year-old kid. >> reporter: the crash occurred at the end of mary he's drive way where gouge marks from the rollover can still be seen. an 18-year-old front seat passenger suffered serious injuries including a broken pelvis, punctured lung and damaged spleen. the front passenger's twin brother was in the back seat along with a 16-year-old boy. they received minor injuries. all four crash victims attend central bucks south where grief counselors were available even though school is closed today. the cause of the crash is under investigation but the new britain police chief believes speed was a factor and possible alcohol. >> with don't know if they were drinking. there's toxicology tests have to be done but there was beer cans at the scene. both inside the truck and scattered about. >> i'm terrified to go out

that drive way. >> reporter: mary says the crash site is at the end of a curve just south of upper stump road and the frequent sight of accidents. she remembers at least three times medevac choppers have landed on her lawn. she says there was another fatality here just a couple years ago. >> we have had so many accidents at, in our drive way. we could have a permanent head stone there like they do for the vietnam memorial with the names on them. >> reporter: now, sadly christopher sydlowski is now on that list and the cb south communities is mourning his loss. the investigation is continuing. accident reconstruction experts will be brought in later this week. live in warrington, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." rick. >> nora, thank you. several roads in burlington county were closed for much of the afternoon as crews repaired a gas leak. officials say a crew was cutting grass in the 300 block of tom brown road in moorestown. the mower struck a cap to the gas line apparently. tom brown road between new

albany and haines mill roads was closed while the gas company made repairs. two residents were evacuated from a nearby home as a precaution. all right. it is game day. the eagles officially kick off their season against the atlanta falcons tonight in prime time less than an hour from now exactly but the birds' cheerleaders kicked off the excitement this morning in northeast philadelphia. they surprised fans with a pep rally at the dunkin' donuts on cottman avenue. and "action news" reporter chad pradelli has been talking with chancey fan fans all day ln center city. he's live at dillworth park. everybody seems ready for some football finally, hm? >> reporter: you better believe it rick. this city bleeds eagles green. the 2015 season begins in less than an hour and fans are certainly ready. >> i love the eagles offense this year. i think chip kelly put together an offense that's going to be explosive and unstoppable. >> reporter: the new look eagles will kick offer the

philadelphia. rosh hashana started at sundown last night. the celebration continues until tomorrow evening. a recent scandal surrounding some philadelphia funeral homes is prompting local funeral directors to speak out tonight. hoping to counter the negative news concerning the decomposed bodies, the unlicensed facilities and some cases the criminal charges. "action news" reporter walter perez has the story. he's lie tonight from the city's strawberry mansion section. walter. >> reporter: well, today's news conference was held to inform the public before hiring a funeral home, make sure it has three he necessary posted licenses. a professional license, a facility license and a business license. they also wanted to express their dismay over what unfolded last month. members of the quaker state funeral directors association say laws to protect people from illegal funeral homes are already in place. the state simply needs to do a better job enforcing them. kenneth dupree owner of dupree

funeral homes in strawberry mansion says after all holding businesses like his to a high standard is critical. >> funeral directors are called to assist families in a very difficult time in their lives. and often families rely on us for our professionalism and for our expertise. >> reporter: today's news conference was held in response to a pair of truly disturbing incidents involving unlicensed funeral homes over the past few weeks. on august 25th, investigators found three badly decomposed bodies inside a garage owned by powell mortuary services in strawberry mansion. then on august 31st, police discovered 3-d composing bodies at hawkins funeral services on the 5300 block of vine street. they also found a bag full of human remains. 52-year-old funeral director blare hawkins has since been charged with three counts of abuse of a corpse. in the wake of today's news conference, "action news" reached out to the state department of professional and occupational affairs.

they sent us a statement reading in part "we plan to undertake a careful review of the law that authorized the state board of funeral directors in 1968. then we will work with the board to bring about any needed updates and reforms ." meanwhile dupree came short of saying the state is not living up to its obligation to regulate his industry but he he did say. >> we're not accusing them of not doing their job, we're just simply saying that the current funeral service law should be enforced and funeral establishments to be inspected to ensure that they're properly licensed. >> reporter: meanwhile an upcoming hearing is scheduled in harrisburg for the manager of powell mortuary services to discuss the status of her licensing but as of right now, as of tonight no new criminal charges in either case. reporting live from strawberry mansion, walter perez, channel6 "action news. rick. >> walter thank you. a number of new jersey service members were rewarded for their hard work today. first lady mary pat christie handed oat this year's heart of a hero scholarship in

atlanta in their monday night opener. nine new starters for chip kelly are about to take the field. let's take a look at new eagles quarterback sam bradford. he'll make his first start in nearly 700 days. nearly two years for bradford after missing time with 2acl tears, bradford admits he's a little nervous going into this eagles debut. he's zero and two on monday night football, zero and two in his career against atlanta but the way he played and the way the eagles looked in the preseason everyone is hopeful the eagles will make it back to the playoffs and finally get to another super bowl. >> i really don't pay attention to anything that goes on outside this building. you know, i'm not concerned with what the expectations are outside of this building, you know, we know what our expectations are of ourselves. you know, and they're pretty high as well. we expect to go out there and execute and play at the level that we know we can and i think that's all that matters. >> it's all about, you know where are we at the ends of the year but to get to the end

more morning before we start to warm the overnights and another cool one is on tap as well. in fact, this morning a fall-like chill in the air. it was 56 degrees in philadelphia. that was the coolest start since june 5th. you had to go back to last spring when we had a temperature this cool in philadelphia and even in the lehigh valley this morning it dipped as low as 50 degrees and in yet another cool wasn't tonight we're expecting 49 in allentown and also around 58 degrees for center city. temperatures right now in and around the city between about 73 and 76 degrees. again, a few degrees shy of what is normal for this time of year. and as we widen out, lehigh valley 73, 74 in reading, 75 in wilmington. and with a westerly wind today, no sea breeze at the shore, so equally as warm or cool, however you want to put it, with temperatures at 75. there's high pressure anchored just to our west and you can see it has pretty much evaporated any moisture from

minneapolis, chicago, atlanta, raleigh, the midatlantic. low pressure that brought a lot of clouds yesterday and a few showers now spinning its way in northern new england. that's kicking out high pressure coming in and that will relax the wind as well. so, that high with it situated nearby this week will buckle that jet stream into canada and everybody east of the rockies in the lower 48 will be enjoying temps at least in the 80's, even some 90's in the nation's heartland. in addition, we're not going have a combination of extreme humidity with this summer-like heat this week. so, tuesday through saturday, your dewpoints in the 50's which is the pleasant zone. not the humid zone. there's that blue sky tomorrow. 62 at 8 o'clock, 72 at 11 o'clock and then we're going into the low 80's tomorrow bumping above that normal of 79 degrees. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 83 tomorrow. wall to wall sunshine wednesday and again on thursday, both days there high temperatures at 86. overnight lows will be moving out of the 50's and going back

into the 60's and then by friday, temperatures running 10 degrees above normal at 87. we stay there on saturday. now friday and saturday we're going to add a little more cloud cover to the atmosphere but overall, it is still fairly quiet and it is still fairly sunny and then on sunday itself when the eagles and philadelphia union are in town, cold front slips in with a lot of clouds, maybe a shower or two, not a washout at 82 and then beyond that it drops a little closer to normal for this time and year with sun and clouds monday and a high of 79 degrees so a beautiful fall stretch of weather i should say, almost summer-like coming up this week. >> the newest miss america kicked offer her reign today at the jersey shore and as her first official order of business betty cantrell of georgia took a ceremonial dip in the ocean in atlantic city. cantrell won the crown and a $50,000 scholarship last night at boardwalk hall. the 21-year-old is a currents student at mercer university and she's the first contestant from georgia to win the crown
