are telling folks who plan to come see the pope to give themselves a lot of extra travel time. let's go live to "action news" reporter john rawlins at the septa station in paoli chester county with that part of the story. hi, john. >> reporter: hi, guys. well, yeah, bookings are changing all the time as people buy their tickets but paoli will be one of the if not the busiest feeder stations for this weekend. radnor will also see big numbers. public safety officials are saying people need to be patient but they also need to be prepared. they need to check out where they're going. they need to look at the station maps that have been published out there online to see he if there are any road closings around there just in case so they don't get caught in traffic. stacks of sign posts and barriers that will be used this weekend when thousands will descend on 18 outlying train station. at paoli they normally board fewer than 1300 riders a day. this weekend. >> saturday we're looking at somewhere in excess of 6500 folks. for sunday we're above 8,000.

>> reporter: officials urging riders to study online maps to learn new temporary traffic patterns, street closings, drop offzones and parking. radnor says it has lined up thousands of parking spaces within walking distance. >> this train station here, the r5, we have multiple business sites that are opened and the radnor school district properties and archbishop carroll. >> reporter: but at paoli only 600 nearby parking spots. authorities instead urging riders to have someone drop them off along the street next to the paoli village shops. >> dropped off there, you'll be able to come across to the train station very safely enter into a check point for the train station. >> reporter: nearby merchants unsure as to the impact of all those papal travelers the owner of studio h salon closing figuring regular customers will have a difficult if i'm getting here. her plan. >> just to call it a days, enjoy it, go watch the pope on the tv at home. >> reporter: but the folks at primeau hoagies figures those thousands of pilgrims might be hungry he. >> we're going to have a couple people out on the street with 10-dollar sandwich

bags with either a soda or water, a chip and either italian or a turkey hoagie. >> reporter: 18 feeder stations on the septa rail system this weekend. they are all -- they all have online maps out there. if you want to see where they're going to be street closures for the drop-off points and parking in there is parking, each station is different. if you want to get a link to those various maps you can go to our web site, 6abc.com/pope. live at paoli station, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you, john. the towing continues in philadelphia tonight. vehicles parked in restricted areas of several parts of the city he are being towed unless they have a special yellow placard from the philadelphia parking authority. that allows them to stay put until thursday. then from thursday through the weekend drivers can leave their cars parked in one of six designated parking garages. affected vehicles with parking permits can also be parked in any other parking districts

outside of the security zones. >> pope francis heads to the u.s. tomorrow after wrapping up his trip to cuba and law enforcement here is getting ready for millions of fans and ununprecedented security. abc reporter is in havana with the very latest. >> reporter: joyful crowds welcome pope francis to eastern cuba. francis is the first pope to visit. his biggest goal to preach in places off the beaten path, a mission he won't fulfill during the u.s. leg of his trip. francis left havana aboard the papal plane after celebrating the largest mass in the country's history and having a private visit with fidel castro the aging revolutionary meeting with the pope who brokered a new relationship between cuba and the united states. [speaking foreign language] >> reporter: in his homily today pope francis acknowledged the efforts and sacrifices being made by the church in cuba but he stopped short of any direct

criticisms. tomorrow the pope arrives in the united states where big crowds are expected to turn out in washington, new york city and philadelphia. today the vatican released a pretaped video invitation from francis to american pilgrims. >> i look forward the greeting the pilgrims. i will be there because you will be there. see you in philadelphia. >> reporter: the secret service has been preparing for months for the pope's visit and the big crowds it will bring. >> it's an ied explosion. >> reporter: unprecedented security measures are in place to keep him safe during his stay: pope francis has never been to the united states. he'll move among the monuments of washington and the gleaming towers of new york quite a difference from the decaying streets he traveled here in cuba where he preached against the dangers of wealth. abc news, havana. >> and "action news" is following pope francis on his entire u.s. journey from that

washington, d.c. to new york and of course philadelphia. rick williams and i will be reporting live from the nation's capitol for you starting tomorrow when the pope arrives. also eva pilgrim and sarah bloomquist will be live from new york starting on thursday. and when pope francis arrives in philadelphia on saturday, we will also have full coverage of all of his events. we'll be live on the air all weekend right here on 6abc. we'll also have live updates on our web site at 6abc.com. and remember to follow our special twitter handle at 6abc pope for constant updates on the papal visits. >> turning to other news tonight a unanimous decision pennsylvania supreme court today suspended the law license of attorney general kathleen kane. kane was arrest heed last month on charges she leaked secret grand jury testimony to a reporter then lied about it under oath. the court did not remove her from office and will give her time to appeal. however, the license suspension raises questions about her ability to handle the duties of her 750 employee office. the state constitution

requires the attorney general to be a licensed lawyer. a three-hour alert is over at a delaware bank tonight. at about 11:30 this morning a robber entered the m and t bank in the fox one shopping center. as he fled he apparently left a bag by the door. uncertain whether it was a bomb or not, police blocked off the area and called in the bomb squad. the all clear was sounded at about 3 o'clock. there's no word on what was in the bag or police know the robber's identity. the action cam was there as firefighters inspected a home in south philadelphia that caught fire overnight. happened just before 3:30 a.m. here on the 400 block of greenwood street. the fast moving fire took about 10 minutes to get under control. no reports of any injuries. >> turning to the forecast, we started off the work week with cooler conditions. it was actually a little chilly this morning when you stepped outside. meteorologist cecily tynan is out there with a first look at the accuweather details. hi, cecily. >> hi, monica. felt like fall is on the way which it is when you wake up on wednesday morning, it will officially be autumn and this

morning touch of fall in the air. mount pocono dropped down to 47 degrees, allentown 52, trenton 56, wilmington 58, philadelphia 60 degrees which may have felt cool to you but that's actually 2 degrees above normal. it's just been so warm this sent with a bit of a shock to the system this morning and right now temperatures remain on the cool side. 69 degrees currently in philadelphia, the average high for this time of the year is 76 degrees. but with winds out of the northeast, it's definitely on the cool side. allentown 66, trenton 68, millville 68. sea isle city 68 and wilmington currently 70 degrees. so, a good day for the long sleeves. now, satellite six along with action radar showing we do have a pretty thick veil of clouds over us, not much sunshine, little peeks early in the day and you'll notice that we also have some scattered showers. they're very light and a lot of this is just evaporating before it hits the ground but the spotty showers right now smyrna right now, also elmer, new jersey, and near

hammonton. we'll see a few more spotty showers as we head through the evening. so, this is what to expect. it will be another cool day tomorrow with temperatures just struggling to get up into the low 70's but then as fall arrives ironically we'll be warming up into the 80's and i do have a sneak peek into the papal weekend. of course the weather is very important this weekend. i'll talk all about that coming up in the full accuweather forecast, rick and monica. >> okay. >> thank you so much. time right now to get a check of the "action news" traffic report. going to be a busy week for you matt. >> matt pelman what's happening out there. >> there's something happening on the parkway. >> try driving through that. >> no, don't try that in fact. the papal preparations are giving drivers palpitations already on this monday afternoon rick and monica because that parkway is completely shut down now both inner and outer drives. they closed the outer drives a little bit early over the weekend for the preparations so streets surrounding the parkway like the numbered streets and the local vine here are completely locked up

this afternoon. drivers just sitting in big delays including coming off the vine street expressway onto 22nd street. those delays spilling back onto the westbound side of the vine. a lot of the ramps from the vine are going to be closing at 10 o'clock thursday night and then highways close at 10 o'clock friday night but for now it's these local streets around the parkway that are really a mess. otherwise, though, volume on most of the highways is a little bit lighter than normal this afternoon. but still you have delays on the northbound side of the boulevard and northbound 95 in the normal spots. had a crash in pennsauken township by camden catholic along 38 westbound at lexington avenue but it sounds like that's in the process of clearing out. expect some southbound delays along the norristown high speedline this afternoon because of equipment problems and maybe it goes without saying but we'll say it anyway, a lot of those septa buses are detoured around the parkway. so if you ride one that normally goes down the parkway well it's not going to be doing right now. and as john was saying if you plan to travel on mass tran sit later this week and definitely this weekend now is the time to do your research. go he to whichever agency's

he's unfit for office. carson says islam isn't consistent with the u.s. constitution but in washington he said the constitution bars any religious tests for candidates. >> according to a new survey women in college are all too familiar with unwanted sexual contact. one out of every four women answering the survey said they had been physically forced or threatened with force into nonconsentual sexual contact. a survey was sent to more than two dozen universities. freshmen women appear to face the greatest risk compared to college seniors. alcohol and drugs often fuel these incidents. >> health check tonight. some drug companies are facing harsh criticism over skyrocketing prices for some older medications. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us at the big board with details. >> hi, guys. if you take a look at this example you can tell why people are upset. this is a drug that's been on the market for decades. it treats a life-threatening parasitic infection. the cost of one tablet went

from $13.50 to $750. the drug was acquired by a new company in august but experts say there's nothing different about the drug to cause such a spike in price. the owner says the drug rare and the extra money will go towards finding a better treatment but this is not an isolated case. other medications not new have also seen a significant increase in cost. critics say it's a business ploy to take an older less common drug and present it as a high priced specialty drug. in other medication news, we don't know the price for this one yet but there could be a new drug to treat c. diff. it's a common bacterial infection of the gut and it can be deadly. in clinical trials an infusion cut the risk for recurrent infection by 10 percent. and in other news, you may or may not find this

surprising but when it comes to fruit, it seems that kids like apples the best. a new study surveyed about 3,000 kids ages two to 19 and found that apples by far were their favorite followed by different kinds of juices then bananas melons and berries but it also found only four out of 10 kids eat the recommended amount of fruit per day. now apples and all fruit are best in the natural form to get all the nutrients and fiber. nutrition any of thes also say to help kids eat more healthy foods try to pack their lunch or snack and look for different colors of fruits and vegetables. for veggies you can also add a dip. other super foods for kids include nuts, leafy greens, berries and eggs. >> eggs contain protein and they're one of the only foods that contain vitamin d which helps calcium get absorbed into the bones whole grains are also a good source for

>> time for accuweather at the "action news" big border, meteorologist cecily tynan here feeling like fall a couple days ahead of schedule. >> that's exactly right. actually tomorrow is our last day of summer and it will be a little bit on the cool side. today we're dealing with a couple spotty showers. double scan live showing it's not widespread and with dry air at the surface a lot of it is not reaching the ground. this shows northwest philadelphia near manayunk we have is light showers, montgomery county over the new jersey turnpike just really wetting the ground and generally moving up to the north and also parts of south

jersey, parts of burlington, camden and gloucester county we have this line of some light showers from medford lakes through berlin and just to the east of glassboro and that's generally just kind of drifting up to the north as well. temperature-wise, though, definitely on the cool side with winds out of the northeast. philadelphia 69 degrees. we did touch 72 earlier today but the average high for this time of the year is 76. allentown 66, wilmington 70, millville 68, trenton 68 and the atlantic city airport 67 degrees with those winds out of the northeast, we do have a little bit of a breeze. 15 miles per hour in philadelphia and sea isle city and that's also what's bringing in the clouds and the moisture. satellite6 along with action radar showing the reason why we have high pressure up to the north, high pressure you typically think as the good guy but with that clockwise circulation around that high, that's what's pulling down the winds out of the northeast. now, the same point we also have an upper level disturbance that's drifting up from the southwest and that's what's bringing us all the

cloud cover and the unsettled he weather. tonight we'll have a lot of clouds, a spotty shower or two, not widespread, heavy rain, 62 degrees in philadelphia with the cloud cover, not quite as cool as last night. allentown 53, wilmington 59, trenton 57 and cape may 65 degrees. future tracker showing tomorrow morning you wake up, lots of clouds but a few breaks in the clouds especially across parts of south jersey and delaware. 64 degrees at 7 o'clock in philadelphia. northwest suburbs in the upper 50's and as we head through the day, we will see a push of some drier air generally to the north and west. allentown by 6:30 you will see some sunshine. philadelphia will see a few breaks in the clouds, 73 he degrees. and you'll notice not a lot of moisture tomorrow, so we're not looking at showers. we're generally looking at some clouds. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow breaks of sunshine through the clouds especially late in the day. the high 74 degrees. still a touch on the cool side. yom kippur begins at sin down. wednesday when fall is officially here temperatures

philadelphia, local hotel rooms are filling up. we're live as the first of the pilgrims begins to arrive for this historic event. >> a mount airy family says their dog sacrificed his life to keep them safe. we'll tell you what happened when a masked man broke into their home late last night. >> an emotional outburst and some disturbing details as two people charged in the death of a little girl known as baby doe face a judge. >> now the very latest on the upcoming papal visit. pilgrims are coming from far and wide. thousands of people are beginning to arrive in philadelphia for the visit of pope francis. hotel rooms plentiful just a few weeks ago are filling up. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live in center city with more on that tonight. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, rick. i'm told by the local hotel association that there are still rooms available here in the center city area but the expectation is they'll be gone by the weekend when the pope gets here. >> i like it to be here but i like also to see the pope.

>> reporter: and that is the big draw as thousands of pilgrims started arriving in philadelphia today for the world meeting of families followed by the pope's 36 hour stop in philadelphia over the weekend. some hotel rooms near the heart of town are still available but those in the know claim they're heading towards 100 percent occupancy as the papal weekend approaches. >> we've been moving rooms pretty rapidly. we were down about a third of the rooms and now we're getting closer and closer to selling out for the weekend. >> reporter: registration for the world meeting of families was more than brisk today. the meeting formally begins tomorrow. pilgrims have come from far and wide. >> we are members of the movement and we are here responsible for the families worldwide in the international secretary and therefore we are really happy to join this international conference. >> i talked to my husband and then he said wow we are going to go he to philadelphia to see the pope and that it is

wonderful for us because we have two child in brazil and then all of them study in a jesuit middle school. >> i went to high school here. i'm glad to be back. >> reporter: how long have you been gone now? >> since the 50's -- 57 years. i lost track. >> reporter: monica, there's starting to be a very distinct international flavor here in center city. live in center city, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, vernon. pope francis began his journey to the u.s. way visit to cuba. he's been there since saturday. today he marked the anniversary of the day that he decided as a teenager to become a priest with a mass under scorching tropical sun there. >> ♪ in front of a crowd of 150,000 people francis recalled the biblical story of a lowly tax collector who changed his life to follow jesus. it was on september 21, 1953 when francis went to

confession in his parish church in buenos aires and realized he said that he was called to the priesthood. >> meantime pope francis is set to leave cuba tomorrow bound for the united states. he'll land in washington tomorrow, then onto new york city where heavy security is already in place. pope francis will address the united nations on friday and will be the fourth pope to do so. he's also scheduled for prayers at saints patrick's cathedral, a visit to the 9/11 museum and mass at madison square garden. new york's mayor says there are no credible threats against the pontiff but says security forces will be on their toes. >> this pope has a pen chant for being spontaneous and for wandering to connect with people. so, everyone understands, secret service understands, fbi understands, the nypd understands. our job is to protect him as we know best and he'll make his own decisions and as i say reference ago great advertisement from my youth he answers to a higher authority. >> concrete blocks have already been dropped off at some streets and will

eventually be moved in place to stop traffic. >> members of congress are also learning the rules for how to behave when the pope visits them for his historic speech. our elected officials have been told they he will not be allowed to chat with pope francis to shake his hands or even to try to give him a fist bump. the same goes for other dignitaries who are with the pope. congressional leaders are trying to avoid anything that could slow down the pontiff since he'll be on a tight schedule. the chamber is expected to be jam packed for his visit. we'll be following the pope's u.s. visit with live reports all this week and into the weekend. rick williams and i will be in washington tomorrow for you when he first sets foot on american soil. we'll continue our live reports through wednesday and then when he heads to new york city, sarah bloomquist and eva pilgrim will have live cover research on thursday and friday and of course we'll follow every step of his visit to philadelphia live for you this weekend. the "action news" team will be spread throughout the area to capture everything from his touchdown at philadelphia international airport saturday morning through the mass on the parkway to his departure on sunday.

you can keep up with all of it on 6abc.com. >> in other news tonight, a mount airy family says their dog gave his life to keep them safe during a home invasion late last evening. last night around 11 o'clock police say a marked man broke into their home on the 6400 block of belfield avenue. their dog an 11-year-old pitbull jumped into action protecting the family. the would be thief pulled out a gun and shot the dog killing it. he then took off without taking anything. the dog died of his injuries. the family was not harmed. >> new school year is barely started but some high schoolers are being urged to reach for the stars, a college education. congressman chaka fattah spoke to seniors at roxborough high about the gear up program. it supports students and families in low income areas trying to get the preparation they need to get into and succeed in college. in philadelphia more than 5,000 students are involved in the gear up program. >> in new jersey, the school day was dedicated to exploring

peace. from kindergarten to 12th grade students at moorestown friends held discussions workshops and other programs focused on creating peace. they he learned skills for reducing conflict and solving interpersonal issues and discussed the value of peace in the world. the goal it was spark conversations that would last from this world peace day all the way to next year. >> matt pelman is in the "action news" traffic center and he's going to check on traffic for us this monday night. >> how peaceful is it out there matt. >> peaceful it is not. i don'i don't think it will be peaceful for the next week and a half. we had a mel emergency along 95 northbound. an ambulance was here just a minute ago past 320 but as you can see it is there no longer. but left are the delays from it. 95 from 452 up to that earlier medical emergency by 320 now cleared out of the way. just normal afternoon slowing on the schuylkill expressway eastbound, 422 westbound, turnpike eastbound, northeast extension eastbound, lot of speeds in the 30's and 40's at

this point. and we're watching a crash in east norriton along germantown pike at hillcrest avenue by the friendly's. on the mass transit front delays for southbound trains on the norristown high speedline. that's because between wynnewood and beechwood all trains are running on the inbound track and obviously septa buses that normally run on the ben franklin parkway aren't able to do that now, so detours on them because the parkway is now closed both drives, both ways through early next week as the preparations continue. it's gridlock around the area and keep in mind the world meeting of families hasn't even begun yet. it officially gets under way tomorrow so things are only going get more interesting as the week progresses. rick and monica, have a safe trip down d.c. >> all right. >> thank you matt. much more still to come on "action news" monday night as philadelphia gets ready to welcome pope francis, we'll take a look back at the visit of pope john paul ii, 36 years ago. >> plus he's been through a lot in his young life. today his refugee had a chance to put his troubles behind him for the thrill of a lifetime.

>> an explosion leveled a home in north texas this morning leaving five people injured and forcing the evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood. none of the other homes were damaged and thousands of pieces of debris rained down on the yards and roofs nearby. the explosion could be felt miles away. no word on what caused it but crews are on the scene conducting gas leak surveys. each motions ran high in a boston courtroom today at a bail hearing in connection with the death of bella bond known for months as baby doe. >> you rot in hell. >> one woman was removed from the court for yelling at rochelle bond, bella's mother and her boyfriend michael

the northeast. the call from accuweather for the rest of tonight lots of clouds around a spot shower as well, 53 in the suburbs for the overnight low. and we'll drop down to 62 degrees there in philadelphia. so here's the setup for us on our tuesday. limited sunshine thanks to this ridge of high pressure that stays just to the north and east of new england. the winds around that high are clockwise so you tap into that northeasterly wind that drains down the clouds and the cooler air. temperature tomorrow coming in at 74 degrees and with this high to our north an area of low pressure to our south and east, it will be breezy at the coast as well. high pressure, however, is waiting in the wings. you have the setup on wednesday, high temperature coming in at 80 degrees and wednesday happens to be the first day of fall, the autumnal equinox starting at 4:20 in the morning. it's a mostly sunny sky, it's a good looking day. wednesday and thursday no issues but in the wake of this front that we will be tracking that will slowly take its time moving southward, high pressure moves in, a canadian high which will bring some

"action news" reporter john rawlins is live at the paoli rail station but first let's go to walter perez in the 2100 block of spring garden. walter, what is the latest on the parking and the towing. >> reporter: well, jim, most of the remaining cars you see parked here along this stretch of spring garden street have those special placards you mentioned which we'll tell you about in a moment. the rest by and large have been towed with the next phase of towing kicking in tomorrow night at 6:00 east of 12th street to third street all as the ben franklin parkway is closed to traffic. in other words, the pope is coming soon. if you purchased one of these $20 placards from the parking authority, you can still park in restricted areas for now. but once thursday rolls around, you'll then have to move your vehicle to one of six designated garages where it muster remain through the weekend.
