well, good tuesday morning. we begin with the pope's historic trip to america, just hours away from touching down in the nation's capital for the first time ever. >> yeah, but first the pope is expected to draw more big crowds in cuba this morning wrapping up his visit by celebrating one more mass and meeting with families. and when he arrives in washington this afternoon, he'll be greeted by president obama and unprecedented security measures. abc's bazi kanani has the latest right now from capitol hill, bazi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis, good morning, reena. when the pope arrives here this afternoon he will have a brief opportunity to rest before his busy days ahead including meetings at the white house tomorrow and a speech here to congress on thursday. the faithful greeted with hugs and kisses in cuba, hundreds of thousands drawn to pope francis in the communist nation where ev era all castro is attending his masses. his message monday in the eastern cities of holguin and

santiago about tolerance and accepting change in our lives. more than a thousand miles away, law enforcement is getting ready for the largest security operation in u.s. history. the secret service preparing for months with drills like these practicing emergency scenarios for the pope's motorcade. >> all hands on deck. >> reporter: thousands of agents and local officers deployed in washington, new york and philadelphia to protect a world leader known for wading out into the crowds to connect with his flock. >> the holy father coming here is exciting. >> reporter: the anticipation mouchtsing in the three cities hosting the pope. banners in place, staff getting the grounds ready and stages set. nuns working long hours to make 100,000 communion wafers and shop owners stocking shelves with t-shirts, bobbleheads and everything pope. ♪ >> everyone really wants a memory of him.

>> i believe that i'm being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive conservative message can rise to the top of the field. with this in mind, i will suspend my campaign immediately. >> walker had struggled financially after two lackluster debate performances. and republican candidate ben carson is trying to clarify those controversial statements he made that muslims shouldn't be president. he said he meant radical islamists. religion shouldn't matter as long as the president can support the constitution, he said. islamic-american groups have called for him to drop out. carly fiorina said carson is wrong and all americans have the right to be president no matter their religion and also talked about russian leader vladimir putin who she once met while waiting to make a speech in china. she called him a formidable

adversary. >> he's a kgb guy, we should never forget this and lusts for power and has gathered up a lot of it and is a very bad arc and it's a bad thing his fighter jets and his soldiers are sitting in syria right now. >> fiorina also said putin needs to see more strength and resolve from the united states which she said is not being shown by president obama. >> one more note from the political desk, ted cruz also appeared on a late night talk show, the texas republican candidate for president was challenged by stephen colbert over the issue of gay marriage and then the audience got involved. >> it's a question for the states because the 10th amendment says if it doesn't men it it's a question for the states. that's in the bill of rights. everything that is not mentioned is left to the states so if you want to change the marriage laws -- >> i'm asking what you want. >> i believe in democracy. i believe in democracy and i don't think we should trust -- >> guy, guy, however you feel he's my guest so please don't boo him.

>> moments later cruz got applause when he argued that issues like gay marriage should not be won in court but rather at the ballot. >> the white house is offering another $400 million in humanitarian aid to help ease the refugee crisis. the money will bring the total u.s. assistance package to $4.5 billion and help to pay for emergency health care, food, water and shelter for displaces syrians with the united states planning to take in more refugees over the next two years. lawmakers are saying the plan is too big. more migrants are pouring into the u.s. from mexico. a surprising uptick in the number of people illegally crossing the border, many children traveling alone. the border patrol arrested nearly 10,000 unaccompanied children and families last month, that's a 52% jump from the same time last year. many of them are escaping violence in honduras, guatemala and el salvador. in california a close call for a navy pilot, an f/a-18 jet

crashed into ray field near an air station during a training flight but the pilot ejected safely. in fact, he walked away from the landing site and right up to the paramedics at the scene. there were no injuries on the ground either. the huge cloud of smoke was seen, though, for miles. turning to weather, remnants from what was a tropical depression will bring downpours to the southwest today. on the radar you can see heavy rain in new mexico heading toward colorado. it brought more than an inch of rain to tucson, arizona, more the city's average for all of september. well, still ahead, the american food executive now spending nearly three decades in jail with connection with a salmonella outbreak. saved by technology, a teenager not feeling well, his apple watch alerting him that it was something very serious. plus, wild wreck. a race car catapulting into the air in a terrifying crash caught on camera.

residents of a dallas suburb are spending the night out of their homes evacuated after a house exploded yesterday morning. the cause of the explosion has not been determined but it may have been natural gas. five people were injured. at least two of them seriously and at least ten other homes damaged. the fire chief says it's a miracle no one was killed. experts say you should leave the building if you smell natural gas. a former georgia peanut executive is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison over a deadly salmonella outbreak. stewart parnell was sentenced to 28 years in prison for shipping contaminated peanuts. he was allowed to remain free on

appeal. at trial prosecutors shared e-mails where they say he pushed employees to sell tainted food saying just ship it. i cannot lose any more customers. the head of volkswagen in the u.s. says we have totally screwed up, his quote. the german automaker admits it rigged some of its diesel cars to report lower emissions. that could cost vw as much as $18 million in environmental fines plus other penalties are possible, even jail time for executives. the company's stock plunged monday. the scandal spreading to europe and asia. many vw owners say they feel betrayed. apple is reportedly accelerating its efforts to build an electric car. "the wall street journal" says it is a committed project for apple and could be available in years. it is code named titan and has a green light to triple the number of people working on it. the titan would not be a

this sea of pink you're looking at is the water at a bird refuge in santa barbara, california, it started turning pink friday and the color became more intense in the last few days. officials say it's caused by bacteria that's flourishing in the heat. the water is not good for the birds so they may have to be treated. now for a look at morning road condition, heavy rain could flood streets across the southwest. slick at times in the upper midwest from duluth to des moines and showers could make for a wet commute from florida up to the mid-atlantic. it looks like a great day for flying. weather-related airport delays only expected in phoenix. well, same-sex marriage supporters say kim davis is still not cooperating. >> the aclu says deputy clerks in her office are altering the marriage licenses that they issue to gay couples so that the licenses are invalid. davis' attorneys tell abc news she is making a good faith effort to comply with the court's order and in an abc news
