the pontiff comes to philadelphia. the big story is pope francis' historic visit to the white house, there was plenty of pomp and circumstance on the south lawn as president obama and the first lady officially welcomed the pontiff to washington, d.c. this as anticipation continues to build for the pope's arrival here in philadelphia. >> david henry is on the ben franklin parkway as construction continues and more for him in just a minute but first lets go to rick williams and monica malpass live in washington, d.c. >> reporter: thank you sara, hi there, and yes after a fairly quiet day yesterday, the pope's first full day on american soil today as been a busy one, starting out at the white house with a special welcoming ceremony, lets look at some of video from this morning. with the fanfare of trumpets, the trump arrived in his modest italian fiat, where the

president greeted him and escorted him to a red carpeted stage surrounded by color guards. >> he emphasized the topics they agree on everything from economic dispermit. and most importantly the president recognizes the humanity of the pope, all of this in the u.s. is because he has a gentle quality as a human being. >> in your humility and embrace of simplicity and the gentleness of your words, and the generosity of your spirit, we see a living example of jesus's teachings. [ applause ] and during his remarks the pontiff waded into one of america's most highly charged political debates that of

climate change and was proud of obama's efforts to combat it. >> mr. president, i find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. >> after the remarks. the leader of the free world and the leader of the catholic church met privately in the oval office and met on the balcony to greet a crowd of 25,000 people on the white house long but the highlight was the parade that followed that. >> what an incredible sight, a 15 minute parade around the ellipse and national mall and people were able to get close to the pontiff and the popemobile made in the u.s. and had security guards bring a baby over to kiss and a young little

girl to give him what looked like a flag. waiving at the tag and giving the sign of the cross, this is a memorable and excited day and he is now at saint matthew's parish doing a private service with the bishops and then will return to the vatican for a much needed rest. >> and then he will be here at the university for a huge mass and canonization ceremony, it's an outdoor mass, they call it the mass on the grass, and people are filing in some 25,000 strong will be here for the special ceremony and we will be here as well. >> we are honored to be part of history in the making, we'll be back with another live report at 12:30. >> thank you, lets go live to the picture of the cathedral of saint matthew in washington, d.c., where pope francis is joining american bishoped for a

place, up and down the parkway, we see tents and port-a-potties and other construction projects as far as the eye can see, people that live in the nearby neighborhoods and the construction workers here are getting a sense they are about to be a part of history. >> i'm excited for the city, it's getting the focus it probably deserves. >> a lot of people put out by the restrictions and all of this construction are now starting to take pride in the event, even though he is jewish, boris wants to be part of history being made on the parkway, he has tickets for the festival and mass, and he likes this pope and the celebration of family that takes place here. >> it's a human thing, really emphasis on family and love and that is what we need now. >> an army of men and women are putting in long hours for this massive undertaking, the clock it ticking and the prerk is on

and despite that pressure there is pride advised. >> when was the last time the pope was here in the 70s. >> 79. >> yes, and i can say i did it. >> there are miles of structure to build and the alter is mostly in place and jumbotrons are being moved into place and two giant grab stands are off to the sides for the hundreds of media outlets from around the world that will cover the two papal events on the parkway and high security fences are encroaching further and further into the neighborhood bz, people that live nearby are accustomed to big events but have never seen anything like this. >> you see welcome america and made in america, how does this compare? >> this is already a much bigger event than that, you can't drive across the city without having to go around something and it's still four days away. >> with all the work to be done, there is no detail too small,

hd showing you a beautiful center city skyline, temperatures are expected to top out in the 80s today before taking a cooler turn into the weekend. meteorologist, david murphy is outside with a first look at your accuweather forecast. >> well sara lots of sunshine in the region and barely a cloud in sight, unless you look to the south and west of philadelphia, look at satellite down by delaware and down in cape may county there is a little bit of lingering cloud cover from the system that passed us by and is up over new england, and most of us are looking at bright and blue conditions, autumn did arrive at dawn at 4:21, it's here and over the next several hours it will hardly feel like it. we are climbing into the 70s in the region and 73 in philadelphia, and 72 inal ebb town and 75 at the airport in atlantic city, a breeze is blowing comfortable enough in philadelphia, and 14 in wilmington and other spots in

david back for another check of accuweather, saying we are just okay with these temperatures sticking around. >> well, i know what is coming, but you have it today. stormtracker 6 live double scan shows us we are dry across the region and a pretty picture from the action cam from fairmount park and the stables and the horses soaking up the sun and eating hay. that is what you do if you are a horse on a nice day. >> your dew point dipped to 50 and it's not humid out there, a little on the warm side and a breeze northeast at 12 miles per hour, that is par for the course for the rest of the afternoon, the breeze is running 6 to 12 and maybe higher than that occasionally, 70 in reading and 72 in trenton, you look at these numbers, we are fairly even at the noon hour, only 7 in cape

may, and satellite showing you sunshine and the lack of any significant cloud cover, and the farther south in delaware and cape may county, there is high, thin stuff and the sun is getting through it well. up in the lehigh valley, a bit warmer with a high of 79 degrees, yesterday only in the mid-70s across the region and mostly sunny and on the pleasant side there as well. in philadelphia, a high of 80, a bit warmer than it was yesterday, winds running northeast 6 to 10 miles per hour and as we go overnight, patchy clouds and comfortable and low humidity and a low of 60 in philadelphia with some of the out lying cooler suburbs going down to 50over sunlight. there are nice winds and easing back overnight. in between the two periods we have an afternoon and evening commute to talk about. and it's one for the a.c. and the shades, sunny and warm and

83 by 4:00, you may put your elbow out the window and 73 by 7:00, and it's a nice evening if you plan to be out. all eyes are on the area of low pressure, that begin to develop in the south along the carolina coastline, it's so far away from us, it doesn't have a major effect. as this pushes up the coast, we have an increase in cloud cover and the flow coming in off the ocean will also cool us down. as to whether or not the low gets close enough to us to provide rain, there is one model now that wants to push rain into the philadelphia over the weekend particularly on sunday and the majority of the model in any given run are keeping us dry, the reason for that is a big area of high pressure that looks to be so firmly entrenched in new england, it should be enough to push the dry air away, and we look fairly cloudy for the weekend and breezy and cool

with the win coming in off the ocean, a 70% chance we stay dry but that does not mean 100%. 80 is today's high and a couple of summer time after noons, and 75 on friday, and we'll go 73 on saturday, and 72 on sunday, with a southern storm to keep our eyes on, if it did rain over the weekend it would more than likely be sunday rather than saturday. and it should hold off until later in the afternoon and that should be good for the papal mass on sunday. any way we are hoping for dry. we'll keep our eyes on it. >> really hoping for dry. thanks david, there is more ahead on the next half hour at noon, we go live to washington, d.c., right now pope francis is at this gathering meeting with american bishops for a mid-day prayer service, the "action news" team is live in washington
