>> the visit of pope francis has been joyful for so many people. but it's also been tough on some residents and some businesses. action news reporter jeff is live with that part of our story. >> we are getting throngs of people coming from the festival down here on the 100 block of south 13th street. as you remember, the mayor all along saying he expects a million plus. but some local businesses say they are just not seeing the crowds. the brick oven pizza say sales are down some 50% today. now, this is a story that's being repeated at restaurants all across, some saying that the security measures scared away the locals and prevented many others from coming in.

throngs of pilgrims here for a spiritually uplifting experience aren't doing much to lift local business' bottom line. the restaurant didn't even need to open an entire dining room. >> usually saturday night we have an hour to two hours wait. tonight there is no wait. we get people to come in. >> the general manager planned for huge crowds but believes the million plus visitors the city predicted didn't show. >> i think we are doing a little better than other restaurants because of the location. but we are not getting the business that we were supposed to get. >> some businesses like the melting pot didn't bother to open. elsewhere, empty tables were a common sight. a clerk at a jewelery and accessory store said business was slow. while across the street this art gallery had a decent day thanks to the pop art it stocked up.

>> welcome back to this special edition of action news as we continue to cover the historic visit of pope francis. it's been a day to remember as our city stood still to welcome and celebrate the holy father. pope francis arrived just after 9:40 this morning stepping on to the tarmac to the sounds of, what else, rocky. it was a jubilant start to a successful day. it began with a service at philadelphia's mother church, the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul and ending with song and celebration. we'll go back to brian sharrie. >> thanks. brian and i came in prepared to work a long day, but we are not

complaining. we were treated to a great evening. on the stage right behind us, it was graced by pope francis and a list of musicians. crews are working hard to turn this concert stage into an alter for tomorrow. >> that's right. one of our trips to rome in preparation for this event, we found out that one of the singers on the stage tonight would be andre bocelli. we knew it would be special, and it was. ♪ but thine is the kingdom and the power ♪ >> the sound of his voice touched heaven. it soared throughout fill philadelphia. >> also on the stage, juanes, he is the latin pop star winning

ex-courting him back to the seminary for the night waving as he went by. this family brought their young daughter to see the pope. >> such a special experience. we'll never see anything like this in our city. we wanted to take advantage of it. >> many have been moved by pope francis. some had signs, chairs and coolers for hours. >> i love everything he stands for. we are spiritual, not as religious, i feel like he's like that. >> earlier students camped out chanting cheers and showing their school spirit, waiting for their chance to greet the pontiff. >> i think we have a connection with him. we are like hoping he would stop here. but we have a special connection with him. >> you can see through his eyes he cares for the people and making a difference.

he just cares about what he's doing and cares about everyone that he meets. >> and pope francis will rest his head at the seminary tonight. tomorrow morning he will meet with a group of 300 bishops from around the world. he will make his way to a correctional facility to meet with inmates and staff. the avenue is open. but those periodic road closures will be in effect tomorrow. we'll have more details on that tomorrow. >> thank you. months ago city hall told us this would be an event that would require comfortable walking shoes. that proved to be true for people were on the ben franklin bridge. >> several thousand pilgrims made their way across the bridge by foot. it was a two mile trek, but a

small price to pay for a chance to see pope francis. dozens of pilgrims from new jersey sang as they made their spiritual journey across the bridge to see pope francis. >> it's exciting. just once in a lifetime i assume. last time was 36 years ago, i wasn't even alive. we are just here for the whole event of it. >> people from all across the country and world made their way here to camdon dubbed the gateway to the pope. these students arrived from jackson, michigan. >> we love jesus! >> looking forward to the energy and excitement that will be around. >> the stream of people walking the bridge was small but steady. >> thank you. >> law enforcement checked bags at the base of the bridge. the lines were short.

officials say roughly 15,000 others took pack across the bridge. demand was lower than expected and they scaled back operations. whether walking or riding, it was a joyous occasion. >> i have come across a lot of people that are happy happy festive. >> this side was shut down to pedestrian traffic. it was used for emergency vehicles and responders put it to good use. new jersey state police say they had to rush a kidney transplant patient across the bridge to jefferson hospital where a new kidney was awaiting. it appears this day was blessed in more ways than one. along the ben franklin bridge, channel 6 action news. >> we have seen it throughout the visit. this event was one where the most prized souvenir was a selfie. it's no surprise that social media is playing a huge role in

all of this. action news reporter eva pilgrim is at the big board with the social media story. >> an incredible night. the world meeting of families showing this picture of the pontiff speaking to the crowd, saying protect our families, help us believe all is worth the struggle for the good of the family. at times he was fun y quite the comedian. he had the nuns laughing. it was clear the importance he places on family, thanking the crowd for being a witness that it is worth being a family. and a few lucky people got more than just to see the pontiff. nicole posted on facebook, my son, matthew, was kissed by pope francis today. mamma got a picture. no doubted this will be a story that will be shared for life. one of the things we keep hearing over and over again from the pilgrims visiting our city is how kind everyone has been.

they were headed south off of long island with castle. i'll put out an apb on the escalade. i'm gonna call state police, have them set up checkpoints at every road leading off of long island. getting castle off the island may not be the plan. the feds just called. they were able to remotely activate castle's phone for a few seconds. did they get a location? yeah, he's still on the island. according to his gps, as of 10 minutes ago, he was in medford. how far is medford from here? not far the way i'm gonna drive. [ tires screech ] it says castle's gps puts him at a hundred feet into this junkyard. state police are 10 minutes out. they want you to wait for backup. not a chance in hell. it's right over there. 85 feet and closing. which way? other side of this car carrier, i think. 60 feet now. beckett: there. black escalade. yeah. that's ground zero for castle's gps. so he's in there.
