pontiff's sacred alter. 1 million people are expected to witness the papal mass this afternoon. >> good morning, it is 7:00 a.m., i'm tamala edwards along with matt o'donnell. this is special coverage on "action news" sunday morning. >> "action news" has reporters fanned out across the area starting at the seminary where pope francis will wake up to meet with bishops to the parkway where the this afternoon's mass will takes place. >> let's take about road closures and restrictions, david murphy is outside and karen rogers has what to expect in you're heading to the parkway. >> reporter: good morning, everyone, we are starting out cool and breezy across the region. i'll tell you what, as you glance toward the east, we'll get more sunshine than yesterday with a fair amount of blue showing through. if you look at satellite there's breaks in the clouds, the clouds will get thicker later on. we'll get clouds and sunny breaks, the rain is tracking into central pennsylvania, but doesn't look like it wants to

make a run at us. 55 in trenton. 61 in wilmington, 67 in sea isle city. the breeze about the same as this time yesterday. nine miles per hour, we've seen it higher than that, overall a breezy day with breezes between 15 and 20 miles per hour at times. here's how the temperatures will roll it's going to get nice, noon, 73. 3:00 p.m., 76 that's the high by 6:00 p.m., 71 clouds and sunny breaks, breezy, very little chance of rain, i want to cover the coastal situation as we have a coastal flood advisory at high tide this morning, this evening, it's not the tidal areas of the delaware river, just the bay and back bays. karen rogers we're hoping everyone is used to the traffic patterns and no new headaches this morning. >> reporter: i think for the most part it is the case, for people who hit these points you may be thrown off.

they had an accident at a closure point. this is the blue route going to the schuylkill expressway eastbound shut down eastbound and westbound to route 1. at that closure point we had an accident, they just towed away the vehicle. i'm not sure if the reason was because he suddenly came upon the closure. we've seen light volume that's the way it's been the past few days, the ben franklin bridge it's for pedestrians only continuing until noon on monday. most of the closures saying at at some point they will reopen monday morning, that's why we're coming on early monday morning. we have emergency vehicles here, not a lot of people just yet. we've been watching people walk across the. if you take the buses we have 28 different buses suspended because of the all the closures in center city. but other buses are running frequently trying to get you to the rail. i talked to the septa officials

this morning so far so good things are going well with the rails. don't forget they are making frequent service, but they are making less stops. you have to have the papal pass and use it in advance and it is only inbound service until 12:30. it's starting at 12:30 going into the city bringing people into the big mass. >> pope francis will be super bestowed. listen to this which he would. it begins at 9:15. bishops and 150 seminarians will greet pope francis at saint charles he'll go to the correctional facility to visit with the inmates. he heads back to the parkway for a second papal parade scheduled to start at 3:25. pope francis will spend time to thank volunteers for the world meeting of families before departing for rome at #-- 8:00 p.m. nydia han joins us with more on last night's celebration and

what to expect today. good morning, nydia. >> reporter: good morning, matt, the stage is set for the papal mass that was transformed overnight. let's talk about the festival of families. it was a fabulous and fun celebration, there was music and humor and personal stories and energic remarks from the pope. sister sledge, aretha franklin and mark walhberg hosted and said he attributed his success to his catholic faith. a special impromptu performance of a 13-year-old. animal -- the best part was the holy father who went off script and gave an i i i am impromptu . >> let's us protect the family,

our future is at play. >> reporter: the pope cast a side about the need of government support for family, instead gave 25 minutes of this spontaneous remarks it was wonderful. again, this morning we are looking for forward to the papal mass. take a look at the transformation of the stage. when we arrived at 4:00 a.m., there were a number of stage hands working fever issuely to set the -- feverishly to set the alter, the pontiff's chair and crucifix. they just need to take the plastic off the piano. one of the major challenges for the extravaganza has been to transformation of the stage. we talked to an excess excessive producer -- executive producer about that. of the. >> the changeover has as much or shells strayings of the

he is part of the keystone boys choir. >> we went to antarctic we brought back a rock that we were saving for someone special. tonight we brought it to the pope. i had the gifts for the holy father, i had them to give them to them if he were to call me over. he gave me this rosery back. mark walhberg said said he has the voice of an angle, we debris. >> katherine scott we'll expect to see many, many more people. >> reporter: the crowd is building, some people slept here, they want to make sure they are here and in good position to see the pope when it comes to the parkway later on

today. when you take a look you can see a lot of people set up near the fences that are set up along the parkway. a lot of happy faces, people are waving and bundled up, they don't mind waiting they know it will be worth it later on today. today is mass on the parkway, where we're standing now, you don't need tickets. those who have tickets animal showing up this morning may have been taken up to a different area straight ahead. if you look up the parkway you can see the art museum and see the alter. if you're unable to see the pope don't worry there's jumbotrons so you can see what's happening as the pope celebrates mass. up to a million people are expected later on today. last night when the pope came down the parkway in the popemobile, the people roared there were flash after flash of cameras. people were waiting for hours, some seen him briefly when he walked boot basilica yesterday

morning, but they stuck around all day long lined up to see him come by in the popemobile. he passed in a matter of moments, but it was these moments people were waiting for. they were waiting again today to come by in the pope mobile before he celebrates mass at the art museum. we talked to two people who have been here since midnight. they wanted to see the pope. they came here. >> i told them, we're going together all the way there, maybe we'll see him. [laughter]. >> reporter: and back here live along the parkway we're starting to hear singing from some of the pilgrims here there's a man over there playing the guitar, people are passing the time together, it's a peaceful atmosphere here, people are so excited to see the pope later on today. and they say they want to see

message. many people waited hours to see the pope and they tell us the experience was incredible. >> a lot of people will be making their way through various venues and roads. some of the roads are closures, let's go over to karen. >> reporter: people are worried not only built closures, but driving on other roads. i was in salem county and an emergency worker said it took 7 hours to get from woodstown to haddonfield. we haven't seen that. today we expect more people. 42 is wide open. we expect it to be crowded with so many buses and people coming in so they can park outside and walk across the ben franklin bridge. we expect that later, but not seeing it just yet. looking good, i want to show you the waze app. we can look at the closures in new jersey. 42 to 676 is shut down except for registered vehicles from exit 3 up to the ben franklin bridge.

airport circle is shut up to the ben franklin bridge. the ben franklin bridge is shut down. we have all the closures in the city itself, as well as the vine street expressway, and then we get to the closures of the schuylkill expressway, schuylkill expressway eastbound is shut down between the blue route and i-95 westbound from i-95 to route 1. city avenue, starts at 7:00 p.m., 16 minutes ago, at times no cross traffic allowed. city northbound between route 30 and the schuylkill. i think you were out there when somebody tried to cross when they were not supposed to to. of the that did not go well. listen to the security officers out there, because they are serious. >> david remember back on monday, i think all of us were worried. >> reporter: i was. you know whenever the models are in great disagreement which they often are in front of a big event. you're a little worried. but they did come together in the last 24 hours.

storm tracker 6 live double scan shows we're dry, as we look to the west, there's rain by gettysburg, not sure most of the stuff is hitting the grounds. if we see anything today it's going to be scattered spotty, light and brief. as we take a look at the current numbers we are looking at 60 degrees in philadelphia. similar to yesterday morning at this time, it is cool, a little bit breezy. 55 degrees in trenton. 52 in allentown. 61 in wilmington. 67 in cape may, new jersey. satellite and radar showing you what the models have been showing us the last couple of days, especially yesterday when they started to kick in. the most of the north riding rain is coming up to an area of high pressure too strong and too close to affect us. it will be spotty and sparse. future tracker 6 has been on board with this, at times we have a sprinkle or light brief shower that might pull toward

philadelphia. looks like we have a good chance of staying mainly dry. in the lehigh valley mostly cloudy, but having sailed there could periods of the day where we have sunshine and breezy conditions and 73. down the shore overall a little cloudier there and windier along the close. because of the onshore flow we have a chance of tidal flooding during morning high tide and evening high tide. beach erosion wouldn't be out of the question, as well. at times there could sun breaking through, breezy conscious, but mild, 73 by noon, 76 degrees by 3:00 p.m. probably close to that for the start of the papal mass, nice conditions for the papal parade. you want to jacket in the morning with temperatures in the 60s and maybe again as you leave the parkway when the temperatures are starting to drop. tomorrow, things change we have

we are checking out what's going on with mobile 6. looks like we're following a police vehicle that is traveling on ridge avenue in north philadelphia which is open to traffic right now, but a lot of other closures this morning as people make their way to the benjamin franklin parkway for the papal mass this afternoon. >> a lot of people wandering when do things change, when do things get busy. >> reporter: it's nice that it work out.

for the past few days, people are staying home, for those who are coming into the city have more room on the roads. the regional rails and subways, the buses we have 28 different buses suspended, city and suburban suburban bus routes. subways only running from 5:30 to 1:00 a.m., the overnight hours not running. 5th 15th, city hall stations all closed david. >> reporter: all right, karen, still cool on the big board. 53 in pottstown, 51 in quakertown. 53 in saints david. up to 61 in center city. across the river in south jersey, 58 in buena, 56 in hammonton. 57 in cinnaminson 50 degrees from hockessin to dover,

delaware. if you're heading to the parkway, bring a jacket early breezy, temperatures around 60 by 8:00. noon you could put the jacket over your shoulder. 70 degrees there, 76 is the high at 3:00 p.m. it will be breezy on average about an 18 to 16-mile an hour breeze. mild in the afternoon, i could see sunny breaks, as for rain doesn't look like we'll get anything more than a scattered sprinkle in the region. the chances are good that the parkway stays dry. that will be good. while the pope's arrival has brought people into philadelphia. that is not translating into good business for downtown establishments. one normally packed dining room was not needed last night. >> i think we're doing a little bit better than other restaurants around here, because of the location, but we're not getting the business that we were supposed to get. >> the melting pot restaurant

didn't open at all, a clerk at a jewelry store on 13th street said business was slow. one of the few places doing well was an art gallery across the street from the jewelry store was cashing in an pope art. >> the eagles are hoping that pope francis brings the blessings to the eagles at 0-2 the eagles need it. last night mark walhberg a patriots fan managed to send out a little luck to the birds. >> go eagles! >> walhberg was not 100% enthusiastic, but he did get a cheer from the crowd. the eagles take on the jets, 1:00 p.m., met life stadium, perhaps another miracle of the meadowlands. >> philadelphia did pretty well nobody yelled out cheaters to the patriots. 7:28 a.m. coverage of poem -- pope francis

good morning to you out there, it is 7:30, i'm tamala edwards along with matt o'donnell. you're joining us with special coverage on sunday morning with the papal weekend. >> "action news" has reporters fanned out starting with the seminary where pope francis meets with bishops and semi -- memorandum -- let's go over to david murphy. we have papal coverage this morning. starting out with bright sunshine coming off the horizon. most of the clouds are high and thin enough to give us a fairly bright start. as we go through the day, the clouds could thicken up a bit. you can see that down to the south and west. i'll allow for sunny breaks at any time. the rain is off in central pennsylvania and out by pittsburgh, doesn't look like we'll get much of that around

here. 60 degrees is the current temperature. 52 in allentown. 65 in wilmington. the winds are a factor, similar to yesterday, 9 miles per hour in the city, a little breezy and cool to start out. 62 by 9:00 a.m. 73 by noon, any jackets you have on this morning you may be able to lose at the start of the papal mass. 3:00 p.m., 76 degrees, sunny breaks, 71 degrees by 6:00 p.m. coastal flood advisory for minor flooding at times of high tide in the areas marked. one of the high tide periods is right now. karen rogers you've been tracking roads for us, all the special circumstances across the region, everything is still looking a-okay. >> reporter: tracking lots of closures, like the schuylkill expressway. looking live on the schuylkill expressway near belmont. we're looking at westbound traffic, you can drive westbound. what's shut down is eastbound from the blue route to i-95 the

eastbound lanes we have been seeing buses. the some of the registered vehicles or emergency vehicles are coming out. we have lots of shots we can't show you, the secret service said they are shutting down the penndot service of the cameras that are showing the closer. let's look at the ben franklin bridge for pedestrian traffic only. most of the highways, the schuylkill expressway the vine expected to reopen monday morning, they are not being specific. the ben is not expected to reopen until noon on monday. it will be a fluid situation depending on how quickly they clear everything out. we've seen people walking about, there's a couple of emergency vehicles allowed to travel. we're seeing the ben packed with people with the other bridges open. jill said to me, traffic on 422 eastbound for a commute to work is just fine. the other highways are already, don't forget to tweet it to me so i can share it. >> john rawlins is live at the

paoli station in chester county, more pilgrims are heading to philadelphia. >> reporter: yes, they are they are heading from paoli. septa gearing up for day two. the check sayings is for a bigger day, some of the pilgrims are lined up here, the focus is on the papal mass. it's a specific draw. yesterday, lower numbers that i think some folks expected, reserved ticket sales for the system was 55,000 to move. only 28,000 boarded the trains, those who did found the system that was easy to use. the trains ran, as they will today to 5:30 a.m. to last train out of the 30th street station until after midnight that's when we ran into christine who came back as an exhausted pril --

ceremony there. let's switch live to nydia han for the papal mass. >> reporter: hey matt we arrived early and we have seen a transformation of the stage takes place. crews worked overnight into the wee hours of the morning to make this happen. take a look in the light of day the result is stunning. white carpet has replaced the lanolium flooring and you can see the crucifix and the the alter. now the philadelphia museum of art in all its beauty and glory serves as a gorgeous backdrop. last night there were all kinds of musical acts including sister sledge, the fray and aretha franklin. it was a 13-year-old boy who stole the spotlight. bobby hill shined last night a

member of the keystone state boy's choir he was chosen to perform for pope francis five minutes before taking the stage. >> they had a set change and they needed someone to perform while the set change was going. >> reporter: he performed acapella something he had never done before. it was pope francis who got house of laughter, joking about the problems families face even though he is is single man. >> families we quarrel and sometimes plates with fly. laughter. >> and children bring headaches. [laughter]. on a serious note, the pontiff stressed the important role each

saint charles borromeo. they will relive a picture the seminarians took back with pope john paul ii back in 1979. it will be interesting to see what the picture looks like. >> let's look at traffic with karen rogers. >> reporter: i-95 a quiet scene a lot of people out and about. here's the closure point, as you try to get off at the vine street expressway. you can't do that. nye noi open no problems there. -- i-95 is open, no problems there. the registered buses are out on the road. they get special permission. on the waze app it's a good way to see the closures around center city. we have the closures of the vine street expresses way, the ben franklin bridge, the benjamin franklin parkway closures, as well. look at the schuylkill expressway closures you can

widen out and see that, it's not often we see that. the schuylkill expressway closed eastbound from the blue route to i-95 and westbound it's closed from i-95 to route 1. that means you can get on route 1 and travel route 1 northbound, take the boulevard to the schuylkill expressway westbound. that partly is open. we've been helping you through the closures around the clock. it's a lot to remember. matt, tam and dave. >> a lot of people parades for good weather for the afternoon mass and it looks like they are getting what they wanted. >> reporter: you might see sunny breaks through the afternoon, we'll see about that. storm tracker 6 live double scan is showing we're basically dry. as i go in closer you can see there's a shower down by baltimore creeping up the chesapeake bay. there's the movement inching up the i-95 corridor. a question is whether it survives into wilmington and philadelphia. the piece of energy by gettysburg not robust and not moving that well and scooting

toward harrisburg away from us. as we look at currents conditions, it's similar to yesterday. the temperature 60 degrees, dewpoint 51, the winds out of the northeast at 9 miles per hour. here's the wide view on satellite. as the models began to show us yesterday, the pinwheeling nature of the precipitation is pushing us into western pennsylvania. not so much here. even though we get a sprinkle or shower we cloud up and stay dry with a slight chance of a hint of a sprinkle or shower coming out of south jersey. the chances are you're dry for the papal parade and mass. in philadelphia as we roll through the day, in the 60s by 10:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m., 75. we'll get a high of 76 around 3:00 p.m. back to 74 at 4:00 p.m. 68 by 7:00 p.m. dry and breezy and sunny breaks,

there could be times during the day we could have more sunshine than i'm indicating with the icons. as you dress for the event a jacket is required, it's cool and breeziy, but not all that bad. for the afternoon mass you could opt between short and long sleeves. this evening, you could add the jacket back if you're in philadelphia after 6:00 p.m. or so, as the sun will be dropping so will the numbers. low 70s, allentown and trenton. milled 70s in millville. high 70s around 74 degrees down the shore. we have the supermoon/lunar eclipse that begins at 9:07. the total eclipse begins at 10:11. there could be areas where the clouds are breaking, you could see the red color on the moon
