>> earlier in the morning pope francis was met with applause and music as he entered the saint martins chapel at saint charles borromeo seminary in wood -- wynnewood. he revealed how he started his day. he met with five victims of the sexual abuse. >> he said it can no longer be kept a secret and will protect crowning people and those responsible will be held accountable. >> those who survived have become true herdle -- heralds of mercy. humbly we owe each of them our gratitude for their great salvo,
12:01 pm
as they have had to suffer terrible abuse. >> now, this is not the pope's first call on the topic of child sex abuse. he approved the creation of a vatican tribunal to prosecute bishops who covered up the crimes of pedophile priests. >> next on the pope's schedule his seconds papal prayed on the parkway at 3:25. he will celebrate the closing mass for the world meeting of families, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. let's go to a live picture on eakens oval. last night it was a festival. this morning the focal point the large golden controls. crews worked all night to transform the stage into a, woulding -- into a working space.
12:02 pm
look at that, a sea of people have gathered on the parkway in front of the stage they want to be a part of this. >> this mass will be well attended. they won't be late. we have a team of anchors and reporters to bring you highlights from the this morning and the crowds of people trying to get on the parkway right now. let's begin with annie mccormick live at the security checkpoints. hi, annie. the. >> reporter: hi, matt, that sea of people that tam was talking about, they have to get through here first before they head to the parkway for that mass, of course, the climax for all these events of the some people who came here today said they drove all night to get to today's portion of the events including the mass. a number of things are different today. there are fewer checkpoints that are yesterday. the ones closer to independence hall are close because there are no events over there.
12:03 pm
the lay of the land has changed a bit. don't go the way you went yesterday. you will have to rely on law enforcement officers and volunteers torched where the checkpoints are. in talking to people who are coming through, a man came up to me he said he was walking from south philadelphia his concern was and the biggest problem he had he couldn't find a checkpoint. because of that he had a walk a longer way than expected because there are different closures than yesterday. once you get to the checkpoints it's going to take you an hour to 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes that you will have to be prepared. the majority of people are prepared. they know what to bring and what not to bring. you can see in the blue shirts, those are tsa and agents who get you through the airport.
12:04 pm
you can see a number of people have the clear backpacks that they are selling the world meeting of families that would get you through quicker. if you have your cell phone charged and you have a battery paraded charger, you ever to approve them that electronic devices can be turned off and on. you cannot bring any glass items. there's a list at 6abc.com to make sure that you have the appropriate items. another thing is, if you have a ticket for the mass this afternoon, that might get you through the line a little bit quirk. when i want through an hour an half ago i waited 45 minutes. i had a ticket for the event, so i had to go in a different line. there were people that had to wait a little bit. we talked to a number of people. here's what they had to say. >> it was a little difficult, they are trying to push people
12:05 pm
through, you have to have it. >> once we found where to go, the line went smooth, we enjoyed talking with everybody. it was wonderful. >> we're having a good time. >> reporter: that's a lot thing that's different a lot of people in the line are excited to be here, they expected to wait. a lot of people told me this is what they were expecting to wait and be prepared for this. it's different it's a little bit different atmosphere when you're out there for it, there are people singing there was a band that was in line for a while. they were playing guitar and singing along together. people are happy to be here. the biggest concern is finding a check on checkpoint. the don't blindly follow a group of people, stop and ask a law enforcement officers there are so many out here, they are out here to help.
12:06 pm
the mood is good, there are so many volunteers you can see them in the bright orange t-shirts everybody gets where they need to be safely. reporting live 19th and wood annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." >> thank you for that. the transformation of eakens oval is an incredible thing to behold now they are waiting for more of the throngs of people come out for the mass. when we talk to you before, it was 4:00 a.m. >> reporter: when we arrived it was empty, the energy is electric as everyone awaits the scroard -- extraordinary event. the coverage image for the booklet for the mass has been
12:07 pm
handed out. it's beautiful. look at the stage transform, it's beautiful. you can see the crucifix the pontiff's chair front and center and the alter in front of that. the video wall has been removed from the concert last night. now you can you can see the philadelphia museum of art as the backdrop. it's beautiful. take a look at the video we shot from overnight. you can get a sense how this all came together. i was was talking to the extensive producers of the event. this could take 12 hours, the transformation actually look half that time. when we arrived at 4:00 a.m., the stage hands were putting down the white carpet and replacing the lanolium floor. they added the pontiff's chair and the alter. looking back here live, you can see so many people have gathered and filed in and pouring in hours before the papal mass is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. here. we've listening to sound checks
12:08 pm
we're listening to a sound check from the boys choir, magnificent. the voice of angels of course. more media are gathering, there are thongs of of people on the parkway. we are expecting 1 million people to be here, 250,000 people to receive communion. the mass will involve four different languages, english, spanish and vietnamese. it is cool and crisp day waiting for the historic event to take place. the papal mass at 4:00 p.m. we are waiting and ready for pope francis answer arrival. >> great to hear that. the pope went off script during his first event of the day, he addressed his church sex abuse scandal during his remarks at
12:09 pm
the saint charles borromeo seminary. erin o'hern is live and joys us there. >> reporter: the pope's papacy has been focused on how the cath t -- catholic church can confront issues of the modern world and how does the church move forward. he talked about how the church needs to reconnect with families. but he touched on a dark time for the church. he did not shy away from talking about sexual abuse scandal that rocked the catholic church. he addressed it out of the gate. he started off his speech by condemning sexual abuse, the people who had the responsibility to protect the youth caused them great pain, he wanted the victims to be treated with justice and the guilty to be punished.
12:10 pm
>> i commit to a careful oversight to insure that youth are protected and that all responsible will be held accountable. >> reporter: now, right after the speech there was a small ceremony outside the chapel and pope francis took an osprey to go over to the prison where he met with inmates there. just about 20 minutes ago he landed back here at the seminary and will rest a bit and have lunch before he is in the parade and celebrates mass on the parkway. he had a grueling schedule, but he it was relatively short tip to the united states, he dress draested significant issues while he was -- addressed significant issues while he was here. this is a historical trip for a lot of different reasons back to you. >> as erin just mentioned, the
12:11 pm
pope addressed inmates at the prison, showing that his ministry seeks to include everyone. trish hartman is at the correctional facility in holmesburg. >> reporter: it was a busy morning outside the correctional facility. it's a quieter scene now that the pope is gone. dozens 67 people lienldz the streets today, now the road is open to traffic. you can see the cars moving through. the police vehicles are gone. there are emergency vehicles coming through on the way out of the prisonment for the most part things are status quo, a few stragglers hanging around, they wanted to see the pope or see shepherd one. cheers from the crowd as they took pictures and video as we saw the chopper fly overhead. many waiting for hours to see
12:12 pm
that it was emotional watching the pope interact with the inmates. we spoke with many people out here who were supportive of the pope's prison visit. >> it's excellent because, the men inside need spiritual growth. they need to heal the wounds that have been coming to them for decades. >> reporter: the legal system here has issues you never know. even so, i'm sure there are holy religious people as well that need a prayer. >> we didn't know he was coming in an airplane or helicopter, but we're proud to be here, we want to get blessed. >> reporter: the pope left here 30 minutes ago, traffic is the moving through once again after an inspirational visit from pope francis at the correctional facility. trish hartman. >> so if you're going out to the mass and have not left
