philadelphia. happened around 1:15 this morning at the intersection of west cambria and north bambrey streets. police say a 28-year-old man was shot in the hip and a 19-year-old was shot in the arm. they were taken to temple university hospital for treatment and they both remain in stable condition. so far no arrests have been made. >> joyce mitchell the woman who helped two murderers escape a maximum security prison will now spend up to seven years in jail. mitchell a former prison worker wiped away tears and apologized in court today. her sentence was part of a plea deal. mitchell pleaded guilty to charges related to the escape of richard matt and david sweat. matt was eventually shot and killed. sweat was shot but then captured two days later. president obama is sitting down with russian president vladimir putin as we speak, it's happening now to discuss the future of syria. it's the first time two leaders have talked face to face in years. the meeting comes hours after mr. obama addressed the un.

[inaudible] will be changing. temperatures show that it's a warm monday, 81 degrees currently after a dry and comfortably cool papal weekend and it's also on the muggy side. dewpoints showing that we've got a dewpoint of 64 degrees, so slightly humid. so it really feels like summer today and i'm tracking two opportunities for a soaking rain. water vapor imagery showing we've got two tropical systems, one right now that's in the gulf of mexico. that's kind of a hybrid system and this is bring something flooding rains to florida. there's another one, this is tropical depression number 11 and if it becomes a tropical storm, it will be tropical storm joaquin and those two systems will be moving in towards a cold front that will be moving in from the west. so this means that tuesday night into wednesday morning we're going to get a soaking rain. it looks like the heaviest rain through the overone. when you get that trop moisture over a cold front it would be across central pennsylvania and they could

hotel. the driver was not injured. she told police her gas pedal stuck causing her to lose control of her car. >> time now for a check of our "action news" traffic report monday night. >> let's go live now to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. hi, matt. >> we had a few drivers who got stuck this weekend, rick and sharrie, amongst a whole bunch of closures but not as many drivers as we he expected. overall volume was light and things went really well on the roadways this weekend. this afternoon pretty much everything is reopened, just a couple closures. right here around the ben franklin parkway, still shut down in both directions basically between 21st street and eakins oval. they he haven't told us exactly when they're going get everything reopened but i'm hoping they can get at least some of the parkway reopened by tomorrow morning when everybody heads back to work. we've got a backup here on the 30 bypass in yesterday county coming westbound this afternoon away from downingtown toward coatesville, just up ahead approach throwing 40 there's a crash taking out the right lane. that's the reason for the extra slow go. business 30 might be a better bet for you.

success and by most measures it was but it appears that far fewer people than expected attended and businesses have been grumbling that the heavy security measures have kept people away. >> it wasn't about how many people are going to come, it was about the success of the events. the event itself was successful. >> reporter: those who did make it through security after hours waiting in line by all accounts had a tremendous experience. many never made it in. the crowd appeared to be much smaller than the one to one and a half million the city predicted. city residents fled town and many from the suburbs decided to skip it blaming the tight security restrictions. but the mayor blamed the media. >> i think the reporting on any number of aspects of this was detrimental to the mind-set of many philadelphians and others. i think that in some instances you all scared the (bleep). >> reporter: public officials set the tone warning people they would walk long distances and new jersey

officials all but urging people to stay away. >> those were not our finest moments in all of this and that is certainly the government's overall responsibility. >> we did less business than a normal weekend. >> reporter: it appears most of the pilgrims brought their own food. >> we ate what we had with us. we shared a lot of people talked, a lot of people brought food so it was really kind of like large family meals. >> reporter: some of the smaller restaurants lost regulars but did gain new customers. >> something new, something cool, you know, this is something that will go down in history and the pope chose here to come see everyone so it was a really neat experience. >> reporter: now, to be sure a lot of people had a great time over the weekend and one thing we have heard above all else is praise for the philadelphia police department and its officers who many described as courteous, cordial and very helpful over the weekend. live in city hall, david henry, channel6 "action news."

rick. >> they did a great job. thank you, david. nasa scientists say it appears mars is home to flowing water. before it was thought there was only frozen water on mars. now nasa researchers say there's evidence salt water flows down in the summertime. scientists say salt lowers the freezing points of water which may explain the thaw of frozen rivers. as for life on mars researchers said further exploration is needed. >> tonight in health check after a successful papal weekend the medical tents are down and volunteers are getting back to their day jobs. >> overall the american red cross says things went well over the weekend and health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us from the big board with more on that. hi, ali. >> hi, guys. there were 10 medical tents set up around the city. we now know about 400 people were seen at those medical tents for everything from band-aids for scrapes to more serious problems. there were nearly 130 people transported from the events to

local hospitals for care throughout the weekend. now, of course many agencies were working together, the american red cross had about 600 volunteers this weekend, about 100 were nurses. other medical staff included the fire department, ems and paramedics, many volunteered their time and many say the weekend was a success and it was also good training in case there is ever a disaster. in other news today, there's more evidence that a genetic test can help some breast cancer patients safely make the decision to skip chemotherapy. the test called onco type dx looks at the genetics of a tumor and determines the risk for recurrence. a new study out shows that out of the women who had a low risk or skipped chemo less than 1 percent had a recurrence of breast cancer. also today, we have some new advice on treating kids with concussions. now, we've all heard rest is best and kids should rest both their body and their mind

meaning many are told to avoid television digital devices an lot of schoolwork. but studies have now shown too much mental rest can lead to prolonged symptoms. experts now say allow kids to use their devices and watch tv but in small doses. if they get a headache or other symptoms, then back off. >> you give them an exposure that doesn't worsen their symptoms. and i think that it's much more beneficial to do that than to allow them to be completely shut off from these activities. >> the doctor also says a few days off school can be helpful but keeping kids home for a prolonged period of time isn't good for their recovery. so he says that a slow progression of mental activities is what's best. as for physical, kids should not return to sports until they are fully recovered and cleared by their healthcare provider. sharrie and rick, back over to you. >> okay. thanks, ali. >> the philadelphia 76ers of course are getting ready for a new season and they are getting fans pumped with a new

also known as the super blood moon. thanks to the red glow of it and fortunately parts of south jersey, delaware, the clouds broke up enough also parts of the northwest suburbs that you did get a glimpse of it because it doesn't happen again for 18 years. temperatures right now definitely a lot warmer, a lot humid than over the weekend when it was pretty comfortable. 81 degrees in philadelphia, the same in millville and wilmington. 81 also in allentown, popular number. trenton 79 and cape may 76 degrees. we didn't want the rain over papal weekend but we need it. only two of the last 48 days we've had more than a tenth of an inch of rain. one was back on august 20th and we didn't really get much, .13. we did get a soaking september 10th in philadelphia close to 5-inches of rain and this week we have two opportunities for heavy rain. satellite6 along with action radar showing right now we've got a mix of clouds and sunshine, a few sprinkles out there but if you look to the

south you can see some of this tropical moisture moving in from the south and also from the east and this is what we'll be dealing with late in the day tomorrow. future tracker showing around 3 o'clock, lots of clouds with some spotty showers breaking out, really the heavier, steadier rain will be arriving tuesday night by 11 o'clock you can see this real soaking rain across the northwest suburbs and that will continue to push to the east in the overnight hours and linger into the morning on wednesday. so future tracker showing that we're looking at a good one to 2 inches of rain. areas close to the poconos could get close to 3-inches of rain. again, tuesday night into wednesday and then for the weekend, i'm tracking this. it's tropical depression number 11 likely to become tropical storm joaquin and this likely will be impacting the weather over the weekend. the latest computer models show that we could be dealing with a tropical storm just off coast on saturday. if this happens, we would have some heavy rain, some coastal flooding and beach erosion and some high winds. i'll keep you posted.

sharrie williams joining us tonight. here's what's happening on "action news" this evening. a violent home invasion leaves a man dead inside his montgomery county home. the latest on the investigation coming up. also, major discovery boosting hopes of life on mars. scientists say it's their biggest breakthrough yet. it was the moment that got a big chuckle from pope francis. hear from the parents of the baby who was dressed as the holy father himself. >> and now the details. a montgomeryy montgomery county man is shot and killed inside his own home during a home invasion. it all unfolded late last night in a quiet neighborhood in lower moreland. "action news" reporter nora muchanic has the story. >> reporter: how many gun shots did you hear? what was it like. >> i would say at least 15, just a popping sound. that's way the neighbor who doesn't want to be identified describes the gunfire sunday night on the 2300 block of philmont avenue in huntingdon valley. it was just after 11:00 p.m. when three to four masked men invaded this home forcing their way in and shooting

kevin brown in the neck. during the attack the victim and his wife climbed out a second story window he to escape. >> he was trying to get out the window, he and his wife were in that bedroom and were able to get out -- get out of the window. >> reporter: brown was found by police on the front lawn and died at abington memorial hospital. authorities say at least two of the brown's three children were home at the time. >> i think it's important to note that we don't think this is a random attack on a house. these folks were targeted. >> reporter: authorities will not discuss motive and say who in the home was targeted or why. family members were at the lower moreland police station today. the man in the bright green hoodie identified himself as kevin brown's son but declined any comment. >> pretty scary to know it's in our neighborhood and sad for that family. >> neighborhood very good over here.

so, i don't know what just happened here. >> reporter: authorities say the brown family is cooperating. police have leads. they haven't made any arrests and they say the investigation is continuing. in huntingdon valley, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." >> police in bensalem have made an arrest in the murder of a 25-year-old woman this morning. 29-year-old andrew messner is charged with homicide in the murder of delaura ozen. police say he was her boyfriend. she was found dead by her mother in the bathroom of her home at berkeley trace apartments on bensalem boulevard. police have not said how she was killed. messner is scheduled to be arraigned later this evening. an injured worker was rescued from a cooling tower today at a power planter in delaware. emergency crews were called to the calpine plant in edgemoor at about 10 o'clock this morning. the worker was up on a cooling tower which is about three stories high. the person was transported to christiana hospital. no word yet on how badly he was injured or exactly how it

happened. philadelphia police are looking for the thief who targeted a 15-year-old girl for her cell phone. this is surveillance video from friday. outside the godfrey food market here in the city's somerdale section. investigators say when the girl left the market these men pushed her and took her phone. the thief got away. >> there's new evidence today that mars might be able to sustain life. scientists say they have discovered water on the red planet. abc's handy hit is live now for with more on this exciting discovery. hi, brandy. >> reporter: hi, sharrie, yeah, this is big news creating a lot of excitement especially for future manned missions to mars. for decades the red planet was known as dry and desolate but scientists now believe there is water there today. it's the biggest break through yet in the search for life on mars. >> under certain circumstances liquid water has been found on mars. >> reporter: and nasa scientists say this is their

proof, dark streaks found in several locations on the red planet. >> dark streaks that form in late spring grow through the summer and then disappear by fall. >> reporter: just like seasons here on earth, nasa says these time lapse photos show the water streaks on a crater appear and then vanish but they say there's no direct detection of water. this is simply their best guess also based on other evidence. >> as we ingest the soils, they're moist, they're hydrated, full of water. >> reporter: that is thanks to the curiosity rover hard at work on the planet's surface. scientists say they've also found hydrated salts and humidity in the air fueling speculation life may have thrived here billions of years ago and could possibly exist today. >> everywhere we go where there's liquid water we find life. >> reporter: the announcement has reignited excitement for future space exploration. >> especially younger kids to become astronauts.

workers are also disassembling the stage and the risers. septa says fewer people rode regional rails this weekend than expected but there were still a lot of people. on saturday more than 28,000 people took septa to get to the events on the parkway and on sunday, 34,000 people rode the trains. but wait times both days averaged about an hour and because hundreds of charter buses were parked at the sports complex and septa says tens of thousands of people rode the broad street line as well. >> all right. so one more time let's find out which roads are reopened and which ones are still closed on a monday evening. >> yeah, matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with the update. >> since you guys opened up that mass transit can of worms, let's stay on that front right now. still seeing that dee he tours on some of the septa bus routes because of the ongoing closure of the ben franklin parkway and some of the adjacent streets. hopefully they lift those closures soon. the regional rails still

running on a saturday schedule today and that's been impacting us because it means the trains don't run as frequently so less trains means more crowded trains and in some cases we have seen minor delays. patco still on a special schedule and njt's access link doesn't resume service until the morning. so that's mass transit. as we said the parkway is still closed but overall volume on the highways is pretty light this afternoon. we're watching a crash on the main line along 30 lancaster avenue at wynnewood road and on the 30 bypass in chester county it's been a very slow go westbound this afternoon. the whole way from 202 on out to near 340. reason was an earlier accident that's now gone but you can see how slowly we're moving here through the exton area. in this case business 30 would probably be a better bet. getting word of a crash in wilmington on 95 southbound by mlk taking out the left lane. speeds there just in the 20's. went still have that downed pole blocking off northeast boulevard between 28th and 30th streets there by the u-haul. market street, business 13, a better bet. and in burlington county still

have that crash in the southbound lanes of 295 approaching 70. it's off to the side but you're seeing slowing coming down from route 38. rick and sharrie, back over to you. >> all right, thank you again. a four month old baby named quinn is getting a lot of attention on social media tonight for her encounter with pope francis over the weekend. quinn's parents dressed her up to look just like the pontiff. the entire outfit -- she seemed to enjoy it as well. the baby's getup caught the eye of pope francis as he was driving by so he called his security detail over to fetch quinn. when the guards handled quinn back they passed along a message from the pope himself. he thought the family had a great sense of humor he told them. >> he couldn't believe that we were able to make him laugh. what an amazing experience. we just said your baby is really cute and she's like oh my god the pope just will my baby and she was shaking. it was amazing. >> quinn's mom shared the photos of her baby with the people on facebook which have since gone viral as you can

>> a rare sight took center stage in the sky last night. it was a supermoon eclipse. that's when a lunar eclipse happens while the moon is full and at its closest point of orbit with earth. at the peek of the eclipse the sun's rays turn the moon bright red. it was the first time it happened since 1982 and it won't happen again until 2033. >> mother nature and the image

that come out of it wonderful. >> mother nature is going to give us some rain this week like it or not. >> take a picture of that. >> yeah, it's going to be a soggy week ahead. here's storm tracker6 live double scan radar. it's dry for the most part but we are track something spotty activity so we'll go he in a little tighter on street level with storm tracker and along that 95 corridor, just to the north of i-95 north of gibbstown we're dealing with the spotty showers, same thing along route one close to media, also along route 100 close to areas in malvern and just to the west of norristown, so expect the spotty activity to continue. this is just the beginning because we're tracking two rounds of rain on the way this week. the high in philadelphia 10 degrees above average. climbed up to 83 today. it's currently 81 in the city, 70 in the poconos, 81 in allentown, 75 degrees along the coast in sea isle city. a few features that we are tracking for you. there's a cold front off across the west that will continue to work its way eastward, an area of low

pressure, some tropical moisture that will stream northward and also a depression, tropical depression number 11 out along the atlantic. we'll talk about this soggy setup on the way this week. we're tracking that cold front that will slowly work its way eastward and as it does so, it's going to interact with this gulf low that will ride northward as we get into tomorrow night and into wednesday. that's the first feature that we're tracking. and then as we get into friday into saturday, we're tracking tropical depression number 11. that will more than likely turn into a tropical storm. if so, it would be named joaquin. this is the moisture that we're tracking as we get into friday and saturday. and how this area of low pressure interacts with this front will determine the amount of precipitation we see later on in the week. so future tracker6 showing you 2:00 p.m. tomorrow make sure you have those umbrellas close to you because some spotty activity will be around but the heaviest and the steadiest moves in as we get into tomorrow night. you could see 11:00 p.m. on future tracker heavy amounts of rain moving into the poconos on south and westward into lancaster. so, as far as what we are

expecting, tomorrow night into wednesday, we could find anywhere from one to 2 inches of rain locally higher amounts. then turning gusty. winds gusting from 25 to 40 miles per hour at the coast. it will be much stronger at the coast in comparison to inland locations. nonetheless everyone will feel those gusts by then. friday and saturday, that's the other feature that we're tracking. it all depends on how that tropical depression which could more than likely turn into a tropical storm interacts with this frontal boundary so by then anywhere from one to 3 inches of rainfall. it will be windy and close coastal flooding is a big possibility as well. here's the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast. it's a humid day tomorrow and at 83 degrees with an afternoon shower around, the heaviest moves in tomorrow night, it continues throughout the day on wednesday. it's going to be a windy day midweek, too and at 74: then much cooler later in the week. thursday it's windy. it's cloudy, mostly dry and cool. high at just 63. on friday, breezy with some rain around and at 63 degrees,
