ahead to a night of much needed rain, cecily tynan is live at the big board. what is the story. >> by the end of week we are looking ahead to dry weather again, this is just the first round of heavy rain this week, double scan live radar showing what is going on, you see this plume of moisture thanks to low pressure over kentucky, what this low pressure will do is track across central pennsylvania, that is the access of the heaviest rain but we'll get a round of rain throughout the overnight hours, future tracker 6 showing at 2:00 this is when the heaviest rain occurs north and west of philadelphia and could have a rumble of thunder. heading into the morning commute, the heaviest rain lifts to the north and we'll have lingering showers and it will still be warm and humid and temperatures nose dive for thursday and friday. >> this is what to expect the next 12 hours again with round one of the rain overnight, the rain is steadiest in the wee hours of morning with thunderstorms, the heaviest here

each others one on north carolina lyle street. sara bloomquist is live at the north carlyle street location, the scene of the sexual assault. >> philadelphia police are reviewing surveillance footage, this area is saturated with surveillance cameras, the first is an armed robbery that involved young people from the neighborhood and the second crime, a young temple university student was brutally raped. police have no reason to believe these incidents are connected but the fact that they happened blocks apart just off campus has students on edge. >> this afternoon temple students were talking about the two crimes that happened just off campus last night. >> that is unnerving, especially the sexual stuff. >> it was 11:15 when the police were called out for a rape in progress, the young temple

student left the library with a friend and they parted at cecil b. more and she heard noises when she was approaching carlyle, and a man struck her in the arm and told her not to scream and pushed her up against a wall in a construction area and sexual assaulted her. >> my mom was calling me and a few of my friends were texting me saying the assault happened here. >> it breaks my heart that some poor girl has to fear walking to and from class. >> just over an hour earlier and a short walk away shots were fired during an armed robbery, three young adults were walking together and they were approached by two men, they grab one of the men and a woman and her friend started to swing her purse at the suspect. >> the lady said she fell on the

to the salvation army business next door, six people were killed and excavation operator sean benschop already plead guilty. this man is wanted for a robbery in logan, it happened at rockland nails on rockland street. he went in to get a manicure and when it was done, he pulled out a sawed off shotgun and cleaned out the cash drawers, he left without hurting anybody. say student saw another student with what looked like a gun, outside is walter perez, what are the details? >> reporter: well, it turns out that while this gun looked very real, it was only a toy and the teenager involved was apprehended but the way the suspect is prosecuted in this

case has local officials very upset. >> it's outrageous. >> chester police commissioner, joseph vail is talking about the decision to release this 15-year-old student after he allegedly brought this very realistic looking handgun to high school this morning, he says it's a reflection of laws in the legislation in cases like this. >> this is a horrendous message to send this community that you can do what you damn well please and if it looks like a toy you can pull it out. >> i'm appalled that anybody would think that way in the city, we have so much violence. >> it was around 10:30 this morning when a student reported that a classmate was walking the halls with what appeared to be a han handgun, the school was put on lockdown.

these are going to get rain for their growth later on. >> we have a lot of rain on the way and stormtracker 6 live double scan showing right now most of our region is rain free, we have a few light showers in western lancaster county, northwest reading and heavy rain is on the way overnight and ahead of it, it's warm and very humid, 78 in philadelphia, our high today is 85, 12 degrees above normal and it felt like an august day, 72 and 74 degrees, you look at the arrows and the streamline, right off the wind off the ocean and this is pulling in a lot of moisture in the air, dew points generally in the low 70s, so that is oppressive and dew points as high, any shower we get overnight will drop a lot of rain in a short period of time. satellite 6 along with action radar shows this plume of moisture, i'm keeping my eye on

this heavy band of rain over virginia than will lift to our northwest suburbs overnight. 8:00 heavy rain in the lehigh valley and the poconos still a lot of clouds, 2:00 in the morning it intensifies, especially west of philadelphia, could get a rumble of thunder waking up the family and early tomorrow morning 8:00 the steadiest rain will be north of the region but still pockets of showers, so the morning commute is on the wet side and even into the afternoon lots of clouds and ascattering of showers, and this is round one, future tracker is showing the heaviest rain is north and west of philadelphia, 1 to 3 inches of rain in philadelphia, less in cape may county, shows close to 5 inches in allentown but the northwest suburbs could get well over 2 inches of rain with this first round. in the meantime tropical storm joaquin is intensifying

quickly and the wind shear has decreases and now maximum sustained winds 65 miles per hour and another 7 miles this becomes a hurricane and 400 miles east of the bahamas and it's drifting west at 5 miles per hour and it looks to push to the west-southwest just meandering and becoming a hurricane 1 hurricane and it shows a sharp turn to the right up the east coast by the weekend and you look at this, hey it's going to miss us keeping off coast but even with a storm like this when you have an offshore, the currents setup in the atmosphere with the negative trough what this does is pull in the tropical moisture ahead of the storm, friday night into saturday, we can get several inches of rain and winds are a

major factor and winds 25 miles per hour gusts and the shore 40 miles per hour that could cause minor beach erosion. the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, morning rain and tapering off showers, and on thursday, the winds are up and the rain intensifying thursday night and 62 degrees and friday is looking to be a washout with high winds and periods of heavy rain and 60 degrees and saturday still lingering with showers and 68 degrees and on sunday the potential for more rain as another low drifts over us, 6 degrees and on monday, put away the umbrellas and sunshine and mostly sunny and 72 degrees, we'll have an update on joaquin at 11:00, i would not be surprised if by then it's a hurricane. >> the negative troughs can really ruin your weekend. >> finally tonight philadelphia's pope bot survived
