is a huge problem there but let's begin with our team of meteorologists cecily tynan and adam joseph. cecily, let's start with you at the big board. >> hi, rick and monica. it certainly is a nasty day. it's wet, it's windy, it's cold and double scan live showing that we've got a solid area of rain right over our viewing area. most of it is moderate but as we zoom in you can see some pockets of embedded heavier downpours in the yellow, one right now has just moved through trenton. it's kind of pinwheeling towards pennington, route one. we also have another one working up 611 near new hope and we will see these rounds of rain continuing through the night into the early hours tomorrow morning. now, a wider view on double scan shows you the setup. we've been talking about this all week. we've got that stalled frontal boundary blocking high pressure up to the north and what this is doing, it's funneling those winds out of the east-northeast off the atlantic pulling in all the moisture in the form of that heavy rain and also create something very intense winds.

wave heights a big problem. the strongest wave heights right now from lbi to rehoboth right off shore we're looking at 12 to 15-foot waves and this unfortunately is causing a lot of beach erosion and a lot of coastal flooding. and then we have the winds. they are whipping. a peak wind gust tuckerton 52 miles an hour. we're talking about tropical storm force winds and this has nothing to do with a hurricane. delaware bay 48 miles per hour, lbi47. the same in ocean city and north beach haven reporting a peak wind gust of 44 miles per hour. unfortunately the winds will still be a factor right into the weekend. it's going to take awhile for things to quiet down. for details on that and the latest on hurricane joaquin let's head over to meteorologist adam joseph. >> yeah, these peak wind gusts are going to remain the strongest at the shore as we get into your saturday, so if we take a look at the map in total, from lancaster reading allentown through the day tomorrow wind gusts around 20, 30 miles an hour. for wilmington, philadelphia, trenton, the delaware valley,

30 to 40 miles an hour, very similar to today, maybe a little higher early in the morning. and then right along the shore winds gusting still 40 to 55 miles an hour and that trend with that northeasterly wind will continue to pile up the water not only into tonight, saturday, saturday night and throughout the day on sunday, so coastal flood warnings remain into effect into the end of the weekend, moderate to major flooding expected. what you witnessed today down there, that will be repeated at least four more times as we get into the weekend. the next high tide of concern is around midnight. waves will continue to be six to 10 feet t the back bays, the delaware bay into the delaware river the also expecting some of that flooding during the high advertisement as we takhightide. with hurricane joaquin winds down to 125 miles an hour. still a major category three hurricane, it was a category four an hour ago. it is starting to lift now to the north away from the

bahamas and again that low pressure that is near jacksonville florida is not going to capture joaquin so joaquin will keep its own track as it heads to the north and eventually northeast and it will be just off of our coast -- i say just but it's many hundreds of miles as a category one on monday. so the only thing joaquin is going to do for any coastline along the u.s. is just bring some higher waves early next week. monica, when meteorologist cecily tynan comes back she'll talk about the return of sun and a really nice seven-day to show you coming up a little bit later. >> thank you adam. well the jersey shore as you heard is being hit hardest by this storm. the rough surf is already eating away at the beaches and roads throughout shore towns are under water tonight. "action news" reporter eva pilgrim live in north wildwood to show us condition there is right now. eva. >> reporter: monica, we are seeing some improving conditions as far as the flood waters go. the wind still a major issue here tonight. you can see the roads have started to clear almost

completely now at this hour, but the wind, if you look at that flag up there, whipping around. the wind is absolutely brutal. now, just to show you how high the water was at some point, let me just show you some of the erosion here of this flower bed. you can see the chips that were here have been pushed all the way through the grass and there's actually two layers of floods you can see where it was at its absolute highest. this flood water is moving with the tide and right now we're at low tide so the water has moved out. however, people here are waiting for the next high tide to roll in. water rushes down streets where cars usually drive. >> the water is already up to my second step. >> reporter: this area of north wildwood is prone to flooding during heavy rain and storms. the residents say it's not usually this bad. it's already hard to see where the back bay ends and the island begins and the rain isn't anywhere near done. >> that's kind of little bit scary cars it may get very high.

>> this is the worst we've seen for awhile, so we're real just hoping that it doesn't get as bad as sandy. >> reporter: the flooding has closed down the roads around the restaurant keeping the regulars away. cane keeps watch over the water out the window. >> hurricane sandy i lost my whole first floor. >> reporter: today she already has water up to her second step. >> my kids just bought me a car and i have it off the island. i'm not taking any chances. >> reporter: as the rain continues to fall, sand bags stand watch over businesses that have already closed. >> even with the flooding, yes, i wouldn't want to be anywhere else. >> wait and see. >.>> reporter: back out here live in north wildwood, you heard adam mention that the next high tide is expected about midnight. we talked with police here. they aren't too concerned that this next round of flooding at high tide will be any worse than what we've already seen.

of course, they have the roads still closed down but people are starting to be able to drive along them at this hour. we're live here in north wildwood, eva pilgrim channel6 "action news." >> eva, thank you. new jersey governor chris christie let residents know today the state is prepared to deal with the effects of coastal flooding. he was in sea isle city around noon today to give an update. the good news is, of course, hurricane joaquin no longer is a threat but the state of emergency declared by the governor yesterday remains in place tonight. as we've shown you the heavy rain and strong winds are causing flooding and beach erosion all along the jersey shore. >> we're not getting the amount of rain that we thought initially we were going get which is good news from a flooding perspective but we're still going have moderate to major flooding in our four southern counties in cape may atlantic cumberland and salem. so we need to be prepared for that. >> governor christie added shelters are in place if evacuations are issued. and keep an eye on this nasty weather with 6abc.com/weather.

we're updating the latest reports from our "action news" team along with videos and photos of the flooded areas. we're also keeping a watchful eye on hurricane joaquin as it heads north. >> investigators now say they have recovered 13 weapons from the shooter who killed nine people in oregon yesterday, six weapons at the killing scene, seven weapons at his apartment. all were purchased legally, seven of them by chris harper mercer or his family in the last three years. detectives are not saying yet if they have a clear motive for the shootings. oregon's governor said we have to prevent these mass shootings but that today it's time to help the community heal. >> we can honor the lives lost at umpqua community college best by remembering what it means to be a caring community. to demonstrate more kindness. respect each other more. and take the time to truly connect to the people around us. >> meantime six of the injured

at the college remain at two different hospitals. one was slot in the head. another was hit in the spine. >> new tonight, philadelphia police have released surveillance video of a man suspected of raping a 20-year-old female student at temple university. happened early this week right next to the campus. "action news" reporter john rawlins has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police have video of the man they believe is the suspect in monday's robbery and rape. he is seen here riding the subway near broad and eerie sometime after monday night's attack. what investigators don't have at this point is his name. >> we believe this is our suspect in this particular crime. he's as yet unidentified. we're asking the public to help us. >> reporter: it was monday evening not long after 11:00 p.m. when a temple student was on her way home from the library as she neared a construction site she heard footsteps. she turned as man who police believe to be this man struck her telling the victim not to

scream,. >> he produced a weapon, a small handgun, forced the victim behind a construction pod or dumpster in the 1400 block of carlisle street where he robbed her and then sexually assaulted her before he fled the location. >> reporter: captain darby said there was a spate of reported robberies last weekend not far from monday's robbery and attack. one theory being examined he says, this man could be responsible for at least one of those earlier robberies: so, if you recognize the man in the video the police would like to get him off the streets and are urging you to call 686 tips. in north philadelphia, john rawlins channel6 "action news." >> it has taken almost a week but the ben franklin parkway is completely reopened following the papal visit. crews have been working since last sunday night right after pope francis left to take down the massive stage and fencing along the parkway.

you can see how the water is right up there and they're really taking a beating. really the problem with the coastal flooding it's not as much the rain it's the persistent winds butter double scan live showing that right along the coast you're getting a break from the rain but there is more rain that will be moving in and the heaviest rain currently is pushing through mays landing working up to the north and west really right along the atlantic city suppress. >> he is way. we have another area near chatsworth and speed well. if you look off the coast you can see that rain. that's the rain that will be pushing in tonight so we've got more rain on the way and some of it will be heavy at times. so your friday night football forecast, not looking so great. it will be raw and rainy with gusty winds. the high school huddle game of the week bensalem versus souderton, the temperature 49 degrees at 7 o'clock. by 10 o'clock, also 49 degrees and you definitely do want the rain gear and the sweaters tonight. temperatures show you it is a cold rain. 51 degrees in philadelphia,

millville 52, allentown 50, wilmington 50 and cape may 55 degrees and it feels even colder thanks to these winds. winds gusting out of the northeast currently 38 miles per hour at the atlantic city airport. philadelphia and wilmington pretty close to that, 36 and then the winds still pretty strong but they do drop off as you head north and west. allentown currently 22 miles per hour wind gusts. satellite6 along with action radar showing what's going on. we've been talking about this all week. it's not a coastal storm, it's not a nor'easter it's a stalled frontal boundary with high pressure up to the north. this is what's pulling in all that moisture from the atlantic and we're stuck in this weather pattern right through the night. so, future tracker showing if you're heading out you definitely want your rain gear. at 11 o'clock a band of some heavy rain pushing through the i-95 corridor. as we head into tomorrow morning, we'll still have some showers around especially early in the day, not looking at widespread heavy rain tomorrow, though. it will be tapering off as we head through the day but a damp day, a cool day and windy

day. so future tracker showing on saturday this is additional rainfall on top of the one to 3 inches so far today. generally we're looking at another one to 2 inches into the day on saturday and then we dry things out on sunday. down the shore, you're taking this on the chin. gusts 40 to 55 miles per hour, waves six to 10 feet. major coastal flooding. you've got four more tide cycles with that flooding and damaging erosion that's already happening and it will continue to happen right into sunday. association the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow windy with additional showers arc cold day the high 58 degrees. sunday it gets better. lots of clouds, breezy but not as cold, 65 degrees and look at this. monday, tuesday, wednesday, sunshine is back, temperatures back in the 70's. will that hold through the end of the week? adam will have that answer in the accuweather 7-day forecast. the weather will be improving gradually, guys. >> okay. >> thank you cecily. all right, "action news" at 5:00 will be right back.

with it the threat of major coastal flooding. we'll have live team coverage. republicans and democrats are weighing in on what if anything should be done in the wake that of mass shooting on an oregon college campus. former philadelphia eagle irving fryar heading to jail after being sentenced in a mortgage scam. >> a live look through our sky6 cameras plunging at the atlantic city shore as well as the coastline of cape may. it tells the story in both pictures. rain heavy at times strong winds rough surf creating hazardous conditions and increasing the threat of flooding there. the stormy weather though has nothing to do with hurricane joaquin. that storm continues to track east away from our area. >> so that part is good news. however, the system that is inundating our region could produce beach erosion flooding along the coast as well as further inland. "action news was in atlantic city earlier today where national guard vehicles are ready to roll. governor chris christie issued a state of emergency yesterday. it does remain in effect tonight.

crews have also built a makeshift seawall to try to control any flooding damage to homes and businesses. officials are also telling residents to secure what they can. >> all right, take a look at conditions now at dewey beach delaware. "action news" viewer center us this video of flooding along route one through join action. big puddles covered much of the highway and the problem will progressively get worse as the rain continues to fall. remember, you should never drive through standing water because you can't really tell how deep it really is. >> well, we have live team coverage for you tonight. meteorologist melissa magee live in atlantic city with shore conditions, matt pelman standing by with more on the road conditions but we begin with meteorologist adam joseph live at the "action news" big board with the latest from double scan radar. adam. >> yeah, we're seeing a wall of green no matter where you are so everyone seeing that light steady rainfall presently and every now and then we're getting a little pop of yellow parts of camden as well as atlantic county and burlington county getting a little bit of enhancement so

to speak of the rain passing in off of the shore and we did have yellow with steadier rain in the last hour around center city that lifted to the north towards the pennsylvania turnpike but you can see at this point that heavier rain has temporarily moved off to the north. so we're seeing again that steady rain very wet roadways and very slow go with that wind kind of moving that rain sidewards this afternoon. as we look at the rainfall totals so far in philadelphia we've almost picked up 2-inches of rain just over an inch in trenton, wilmington, a buck and a quarter, atlantic city the same and in dover 2.59-inches of rain so far. and as we look at double scan live radar we have a front that stalled just off the coast, more rain pushing in, another half inch to an inch. as we take a look at some of the data that's just off the shore here of delaware, winds out of the north-northeast 40 miles an hour, gusting to 49 and wave heights just off the coast 19 feet right now and speaking of the coast, that's where my colleague

meteorologist melissa magee is and melissa we are nearing low tide but we are far removed from any threat of coastal flooding through the upcoming weekend. >> yeah, that's right, adam. in fact i just heard cecily say in the last half hour that the shore is taking it on the chin. she wasn't playing about that because we're dealing with those heavy winds. i'm feeling the effects of those heavy winds and also the rain along the coast as well. take a look at the waves behind me because this is going to be the issue as we head into the rest of the weekend with that coastal flood warning that stays up and really waves that continue to batter and crash into the shore as we can find along the shore line breaks as high as six to 10 feet as we go throughout the rest of our weekend. so let's check out the graphics and the big concern for our coastal communities. we've got that high wind warning and the wind advisory is really up until 6:00 p.m. on saturday from coastal new jersey all the way down across the beaches in delaware and where you have the dark shaded counties we actually have a high wind warning with gusts

up to 55 miles per hour. also as we go throughout the weekend it's all about the high tide and the concern with flooding. at the coastline tonight, 11:58 p.m. is the high tide. the next one that we're tracking. then on saturday at 12:24 in the afternoon that's our second time of high tide. sunday 101st a.m. and then sunday at 1:27 in the afternoon. so, this is definitely going to be a big concern as we head into the rest of the weekend. something else i can tell you is that that constant northeasterly wind that on shore push of water it is stilly here at the coast and it's certainly going to be a concern as we head into the rest of the weekend. i'm going to send it back inside to you, rick. >> all right, melissa, thank you once again let's see how all this rain is impacting the commute home tonight. >> for that we go to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with an update. how are we looking matt. >> not doing good things for the commute home as we try and get home on this friday night, rick and monica. we're live here in downingtown along the route 30 bypass. we've had a couple issues, one

of them being some high water here in the westbound lanes. we also have a vehicle that just broke down and penndot flipped the camera around. if you were facing the other way you would see the disabled vehicle that just got pushed pushed off to the side. coming west of exton heading towards downingtown a jam on the 30 bypass. you might want to stick with business 30 lincoln highway as an alternate but if you're in paoli on glen avenue near 30 watch out for flooding conditions. a downed tree blocking sugartown road there in east town township. when it pain township another downed tree along morris road near cath cart. we've had earlier accidents on the northeast extension northbound and the turnpike eastbound both gone but speeds are still both in the teens in those spots. on the big picture had that broken down vehicle on the schuylkill eastbound past the boulevard. that's off to the side now. south broad street blocked near locust by the academy of music for the philadelphia opera company's opening gala all night tonight and we still have high water on 95 northbound side near allegheny. speeds are just in the teens coming north of south

philadelphia. in mount laurel there's also still some flooding blocking union mill road. stick with 38 or hainesport-mount laurel road and i'd expect some scattered delays on the regional rails this afternoon because of slippery tracks. delays aren't terrible. we will have shuttle busing all weekend long on the west trenton and media elwyn lines. have a good weekend, rick and monica. >> you, too. >> you as well. thank you. you can keep an eye on this storm with 6abc.com/weather. we are updating with the latest reports from our "action news" team and our meteorologists along with videos and photos of the flooded areas. we're also keeping a watchful eye of course on hurricane joaquin as it heads along. >> turning to other news tonight we're learning more about the alleged gunman who killed nine students and injured nine others at an oregon community college yesterday. authorities searched the grounds of umpqua community college in roseburg. they recovered six weapons including a rifle an flak jacket belonging to suspect 26-year-old christopher harper mercer. they also found seven weapons at his apartment.

all were purchased legally according to authorities. the u.s. army says harper mercer flunked out of basic training back in 2008 for failing to meet the minimum administrative standards. and with the tragedy in oregon republicans and democrats are weighing in tonight, all offering their sympathies. but they're divided on what, if anything, should happen next. abc's lana zak has more from washington, d.c. tonight. >> ♪ >> reporter: just one day after the tragic shooting in roseburg, oregon, the president reiterated his call for gun control. >> make sure that anybody who you are voting for is on the right side of this issue. >> reporter: frustration etched on the president's face in this photo taken just moments after he first heard the news of the killings. >> and i will politicize it because our inaction is a political decision that we are making. >> reporter: but on the campaign trail several republicans disagreed.

following "action news" at 6:00. >> a woman was killed in a crash involving a school bus a dart bus an car throng in wilmington. this is the scene about 8:00 a.m. along south market street. authorities say a driver going south swerved to avoid hitting two cars in the road. well, the car ended up hitting a school bus and one of the stopped cars anyway. that impact sent the school bus into oncoming traffic and into a car driven by 57-year-old dorothy pierce. pierce died at the scene. the driver of the school bus and the dart bus driver both went to the hospital for treatment. in philadelphia's kensington section a crash between a school bus an police car sent four children and the officer to the hospital. this one happened at the intersection of second and ontario streets. officials say everyone was taken to the hospital but they will be okay. no word yet on the cause of this crash. >> a delaware man is behind bars tonight accused of trying to kill his mother in dover. this is 22-year-old emery cannon. the victims told police that cannon was arguing with his mother yesterday and the situation escalated.

>> in south philadelphia police say neighbors have twice thwarted a burglary suspect's attempt the rob this local restaurant. it involves the moon shine restaurant and bar on east moyamensing. the first time was on july 19th. authorities say a man threw a brick through the front door shattering the glass but once inside he was scared away by

yelling neighbors. the same man allegedly tried to do it again september 2nd. he didn't realize now the door was fitted with shatter proof glass. the suspect was again scared away by yelling neighbors. if you recognize him from the video, please call south detectives. former eagle irving fryar was sentenced to five years in prison today for his conviction in a mortgage scheme. fryar and his mother were sentenced in a mount holly courtroom this afternoon. she received three years probation. they were found guilty in august of applying for multiple mortgages and loans using her house has collateral. the prosecutors say banks were not notified of the multiple applications. >> all right, turning to sports jeff is here. there was some talk about maybe perhaps moving the eagles-redskins game on sunday but it is a go. >> it's go. game time of let's go. sunday at 1:00 down at fedex field in landover maryland but who is going play? demarco murray a full go at practice again today but will he go sunday against the redskins. eagles running back is listed

>> meteorologist at dam joseph is here now. the good news is the weekend not entire washout, right. >> no, it's starting very, very wet but it does improve as we get into the second half of the weekend. we'll shut the faucet off upstairs and try to relax the winds by sunday. as we look at double scan live radar, there's a wall of green out there. we've got light steady rainfall everywhere and at times that rain is coming sideways with those very strong winds out of the northeasterly direction. again most of us it's light rain but you see a little stripe of some of the brighter colors here, the yellows and the oranges moving north from lower bank egg harbor alon along the atlantic city expressway.

blossoming at the split of 70 and 72. we'll see these bands of heavy rain developing during the overnight hours. we've been flooded so to speak with pictures on social media. this coming from ruth from brigantine, new jersey and it just shows the scope of the ocean and how angry it is and any time the waves tried to break you can see how strong the winds are 'cause it kind of funnels up and sprays some of that surf so very choppy waters and it will remain that way right through sunday at the shore. very chilly as well. we're only looking at 49 right now in trenton, 50 in allentown, 50 in wilmington, 52 in millville. we started this week with temperatures in the 80's. it was august-like and this is a little more typical of mid to late november. wind gusts right now at philadelphia international airport the last hour 40 miles an hour. close to that in wilmington, 30's along the shore and a little less to the north and northwest and northeast from philadelphia between 18 and

23 miles an hour. as we look at the future tracker wind gusts, right through tomorrow morning at 11:00 it remains the same, 40's at the shore, 30's inland and that will continue into saturday afternoon and saturday night. we have weak low pressure between charleston, to this carl and savannah georgia with the front stalled along the east coast. all that moisture being pulled up from the south and strong high pressure in canada that is really throwing that northeasterly wind our way. so future tracker showing we're still dealing with that moderate at times heavy rain at 11 o'clock tonight. it eases a little bit tomorrow morning, starts to brake up in nature ann little more spotty. in the afternoon isolated on saturday afternoon. we're going to continue with the wind, the cool temperatures. we're not going to have have that steady rain all day tomorrow. there will be times when it's dry and other times where you get hit by a quick shower. dover again, you heard from jeff skversky that today the race was canceled. you know any kind of qualifying rounds. saturday 63, windy and damp at

times so there may be many interruptions tomorrow in dover. and then on sunday much drier, breezy at 67 degrees. the latest with hurricane joaquin winds sustained at 125 miles an hour. it is finally starting to lift away from the bahamas after battering those islands for two days straight with wind, rain and storm surge. but if we take a look at the upper levels in the atmosphere we had that low we were talking about in the southeast. it never had the let's say oomph to pull in joaquin and wrap it around the east coast. they're staying as two spate entities and that's why joaquin is heading out to sea. good news for the east coast. the seven-day forecast, windy with showers at times tomorrow but not a washout, 58 degrees. breezy, cloudy on sunday, 65 degrees, maybe a pop of sun late in the day far north of philadelphia and then the sunshine starts to return for all of us on monday, 70 degrees. tuesday, wednesday, thursday sun and clouds. low 70's for highs.
