extra heavy security, that online threat caused major disruptions here at drexel university and colleges around the delaware valley. >> i was like oh, shoot, like what. i going to do tomorrow? i was honestly really scared. >> reporter: a lot of students were frightened by the warning from the fbi and atf. many skipped classes today. >> i went to my first class and there were barely anybody was there and so my teachers ended up canceling the rest of the day. >> they didn't exactly cancel classes which i found surprising but a lot of teachers said if you don't feel comfortable don't go to classes which a lot of us didn't do. >> reporter: schools throughout the delaware valley amped up security and got supplemental patrols from local police. radnor township added officers to the shift dan patrolled four college campus. they take all threats seriously but this one stood out. >> and what's really amplifying this is that the threat is coming off the same social media web site that

happened with the tragic shootings in oregon last week u the threat was poster on 4chan the same message board that was used to warn students in the northwest the day before the community college massacre in oregon. the threat was posted the day after that shooting and predicted an attack on a university near philadelphia at 2:00 p.m. today. the time passed and students were relieved and also reassured by the heavy police presence on their campuses today. >> i was just more alert and nothing happened, so i guess i was in good hands. >> the police and even the safety, checking on cars, they helped me feel safe. >> reporter: well, students obviously relieved that the time of the alleged threat has now passed they say this has been a long day and they'll just be glad when it's over. live at university city, david henry, channel6 "action news." brian. >> all right, david, thanks very much. a chester county woman is accused of a truly unthinkable crime.

prosecutors say she was injecting children with heroin including her own 14-year-old daughter. 34-year-old jessica riffey is accused of supplying drugs to two kids and injecting them with hypodermic needles. police say they came to her west caln township home for a well being check. that's when riffey's daughter and a 16-year-old boy told police she had been giving them the drugs. they also say they snorted heroin at riffey's boyfriend gave them. john rawlins will have a live report tonight at 5:00. >> police say they busted a suburban drug ring that sold heroin and cocaine to young clients including a high school track star. tyriq coleman ryan conrequest tell lease cooper was arrested. tyrese rape waples remain at large. the suspects were dealing out of hotels in montgomery and berks county. one client was a varsity run forty three a pottstown area high school.

she tried the prescription oxycodone at a party but became addict but turned to heroin when the pills became too expensive. >> this is the story that we are hearing again and again and again. this is the epidemic that we are facing in our communities all across this area, all across montgomery county, all across the state. >> police credit another drug addict's father with helping their investigation. months after his son died from a heroin overdose, he found text messages from dealers on his son's cell phone and then gave that information to police. >> well, all this wind and rain we've been dealing with over the past few days has taken a toll on beaches at the jersey shore. we've seen major beach erosion after all that flooding and rough surf. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic live in holgate with a look at conditions today on lbi. hi, nora. >> reporter: hi there brian. we are at the very southern

tip of long beach island right now an area that three years ago was destroyed by super storm sandy. now, this storm and the powerful waves that it brought, it did damage some beaches on the island but officials say it can all be repaired. this is the beach near scott avenue in holgate where the power of the storm waves scoured away parts of the existing dunes leaving towering cliffs and dune fences destroyed. but local officials say it could have been a lot worse. >> damaged nothing other than migrating sand. no damage to homes or personal property. one of the victims was the brand new $230,000 handicapped access ramp in beach haven terrace completed just last week by the army corps of engineers now buried in several feet of sand. katherine cane said it was like a blizzard of sand covering every window of her house. >> you couldn't even face

north at all, northeast. it was all blowing from here. it was so strong sometimes that it was pushing me over. >> i was amazed because the dunes have sand on top of them. >> reporter: bulldozers were on the beach in holgate tying to move some of that sand back onto the beach. >> our dunes haven't been repaired yet. we're looking forward to getting that done. yeah, it's just -- it's a scary thing u last week governor christie blasted towns like margate that are fighting in court state plans to build continuous dunes along new jersey's 127-mile coastline. margate has a seawall protecting it that local leaders say works fine. but the governor says margate and others who won't sign ease. s for the project are jeopardizing neighboring towns. >> if this hurricane had come to shore, the damage that would have been done to lives and property in margate, i hope it's worth the vanity act that you're all engaging in. >> reporter: back now live now they had to suspends beach

replenishment operations for the storm and the barges that pump the sand haven't returned yet because the swat still too rough so they had some real erosion, some sand moving on the island over the weekend but officials here are telling us by and large they think they did okay. live on lbi, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." alicia. >> all right, nora, thank you. that certainly is not the case down south. we would call this far from okay. in the carolinas now the numbers and images are staggering. both north and south carolina are suffering from historic flooding with at least 11 deaths now being blamed on record rainfall between the two states. over the weekend thousands were rescued from the raging flood waters. right now in south carolina alone more than 40,000 people are without water, more than 25,000 without power and shelters are taking people in by the hundreds. president barack obama has signed an emergency declaration for that state with record rainfall buckling buildings and roads and simply

washing away homes. one mother describes the moment the coast guard rescued her family. >> probably the most terrifying moment of my life especially having her and holding onto a 16 month old daughter and just that was incredibly frightening but we made it. >> lucky to be alive. 550 roads and bridges are still closed across the state. all will have to be checked for structural integrity. they say this could take weeks, even months to perform. the rain has tapered off in some areas but they're far from being in the clear there. with the governor of south carolina urging people to remain inside calling this a very vulnerable situation. brian and sharrie. >> incredible images there, alicia. thank you. it is time for a check of the accuweather forecast in our area. >> meteorologist adam joseph standing by. incredible to think this is the day we would have had a tremendous soak hemoglobin hurricansoaking hadhurricane jo.

>> it's hundreds and hundreds of miles off the coast bringing large swells to the jersey shore but yes, it is beautiful out here with respect to how it could have been. as we look at temperatures, it's still on the cool side. 68 degrees in philadelphia, 64 new york city. but you look to the west in pittsburgh and charleston, west virginia, they are back in the 70's with full sunshine and that will be ours as we go through the rest of the week. clouds are still holding on, though, at the new jersey shore but at this point in the satellite imagery you can't see hurricane joaquin, it is that far to the east and the bigger thing is the clouds beginning to fall apart. so the evening planner, 62 degrees at 7 o'clock. mainly clear skies through nine and 10 o'clock with temperatures falling in the upper 50's and we still have some residual flooding concerns. it's only an advisory so not a warning. very minor flooding expected at the time of high tide which is occurring right now in cape may county andoboth beach.

>> an amtrak train derailed in vermont today injuring several people. five passenger cars and the engine went off the tracks after they ran into a rock slide the train was headed from northern vermont to washington, d.c. fire officials say seven people were hospitalized but only one was seriously hurt. federal investigators are now headed to the crash site. >> hillary clinton unveiled a

new set of proposals today aimed at strengthening gun laws in america. at a campaign stop in new hampshire she called for renewed records at getting universal background checks. she called for an end to legal immunity for gun makers and sellers. she appeared both subdued and reflective. >> how many people have to die before we actually act, before we come together as a nation. >> clinton vowed that if elected she would use her executive power to expand background checks to include online and gun show purchases and back legislation banning domestic abusers from buying guns. >> fighting in afghanistan reached a boiling point over the weekend with u.s. airstrikes in kunduz causing deadly destruction at one of the biggest trauma hospitals in afghanistan. the united nations calling the attack tragic and inexcusable.

doctors without borders operates that hospital and went even farther to call this a war crime. among the dead, staff, patients and children, some of the most vulnerable were on the operating table. one nurse writing in the intensive care unit six patients were burning in their beds. how can this happen? so how did it? well, the u.s. now says afghan forces called those airstrikes, not american forces. now, this conflicts with initial reports indicating that u.s. forces were threatened and that the air strike was called on their behalf. >> air strike was then called to eliminate the taliban threat and several civilians were accidentally struck. >> international coalition forces and the afghan ministry knew exactly where we were, so i don't understand how any confusion could have occurred. >> doctors without borders says it is leaving kunduz and is now demanding an independent investigation and the pentagon has promised one. sharrie. >> let's hope they get some

answers to this. okay, alicia, thank you. the united states and 11 other countries have finally agreed to a controversial trade deal that's been five years in the making. it's called the trans pacific partnership. it's designed to encourage trade between north america and other countries around the pacific rim including australia, new zealand, japan and chile. the deal eliminates tariffs on goods made in america and shipped to other countries in this deal. it still has to be approved by congress and it's opposed by both parties. democrats say it will cost jobs, republicans say it gives the president too much power to negotiate trade deals without congressional approval. let's take a look at today's closing numbers. the arrows green across-the-board, a big rally today, the dow closing up more than 300 points, nasdaq up more than 73 points and the s & p five unalso closing good today in the green up more than 35 points. >> speaking of rally we have really rallied in the weather

department. just a beautiful day out there today. >> a big rebound from the concerns we had last week. let's check back in with meteorologist adam joseph. you mentioned some sunshine, a lot of it. >> yeah take a look at it. especially inland. at the shore you'll see the sun. this monday has been magnificent with that sunshine aglow here on our city avenue garden. 68 degrees is the temperature. you're probably saying it feels a little cool out there but that's typical for this time of year. our normal high is 70, dewpoint 45, winds out of the northeast drying us out at 13 miles an hour and again no heat index with that dewpoint so low and the temperature that low. 67 in allentown right now, 66 in reading, 67 degrees in millville but notice a bit cooler, dover, cape may, atlantic city and beach haven only low 60's because of that thick cloud cover that has been really stubborn to break this afternoon. and we went from that summer to fall feeling pretty quickly. the last five days of september, temperatures were running around 7 degrees above

normal. the first five days of october we have flipped it completely here. 5 degrees below normal. we went from highs in the 80's the last five days of september to just 50's and 60's for highs in the beginning of october. we're kind of evening it out here as we get back into the 70's the rest of the week. as we look at satellite and radar, there's the clouds hanging along the shore. bright sunshine as you work inland but even down to the south these clouds will fall apart overnight tonight so just a few patchy clouds out there. also, there will be a little bit of fog developing north and west of philadelphia, 45 in allentown, 46 in reading, so another very chilly night. 51 in philadelphia. at the shore temperatures around 54 degrees. low pressure, it continues to sit off of the carolinas just to the south. it is finally starting to dry up so to speak as the showers are ripping apart. as that indirect link so to speak with hurricane joaquin is now lifted to the north and east. we're not getting that

tremendous amount of rain that has been pinwheeling in especially south carolina and this is the rainfall totals since friday morning. most of the state picking up at least 8-inches of rain. a pocket of 15 to 24-inches of rain just south and east of columbia and south of florence and that is why they have seen so much historic flooding and without a land falling tropical system down to the south it was just a stuck low. pretty impressive totals. back at home for tomorrow, mostly sunny, above normal with temperatures going back into the low 70's, even 70 at the shore. your four day at 4:00 forecast, sunny, warmer tomorrow up to 73 and a fall beauty on wednesday. 76 for a high, 6 degrees above normal. still in the low 70's thursday and friday. thursday's a sunny day and the next chance for rain with the next front arrives on friday, so we have at least three more days of sunshine to enjoy. >> all right. good looking forecast. adam thanks very much. penn state university

>> ♪ >> police in south philadelphia are looking for the woman they say pretend he to be a home care nurse but was really a thief. they released this surveillance video they say was taken just after the crime back in august. police say the woman was wandering around near a home on wharton street when the homeowner questioned her she said she was a nurse but the victim who is on home care didn't recognize her. so the woman says she needed to move her car and walk to this 7-eleven where the video was taken. the victim soon realized someone had gone through her drawers and jewelry was missing. police are now asking anyone who can identify this woman to please call them. >> medical marijuana is now available at a new location in south jersey. compassionate sciences alternative treatment center

opened today in bellmawr. it already has 100 patients and managers say it will eventually be capable of serving 1800 people. there are now four marijuana dispensaries in the state of new jersey. this location in bellmawr hopes to produce a cannabis lozenge. if approved it would be the first nonsmokable marijuana product available in the state. >> today is the deadline for people in pennsylvania to register to vote in november's election. state senator vincent hughes held an event at city hall today to highlight online voter registration. you can do everything online as long as you have a valid pennsylvania license or penndot i.d. card. you can also register in person at state and county offices. now, among several other races voters will fill three open seats on the pennsylvania supreme court and of course in the city of philadelphia they'll be choosing a new mayor come november. >> still ahead, a former day care worker who kidnapped a little girl from a philadelphia school is going

her alleged assailant we turn now to our sarah bloomquist live in bensalem township. sarah, you've got the details. >> reporter: sharrie, police are still trying to sort this out. they say last night 21-year-old shane mcmichael a volunteer firefighter broke into a home on this block beat up a teenaged girl and apparently intended to kidnap her. he's in custody. police say he's confessed but his confession they say makes no sense. 21-year-old shane m mcmichael of northeast philadelphia is behind bars. police say last night the volunteer firefighter dressed up all in black with a mask covering his face and broke into a home here on the 2500 block of forest avenue in bensalem township where a 17-year-old girl recently moved in with her grandparents. >> he had tied one of the rooms closed where the grandparents sleeping so they couldn't get out and then assaulted and physically assaulted a 17-year-old girl,

beating her up pretty good. >> reporter: the victim recognized her attacker. they used to live in the same philadelphia neighborhood and she said his name. police say mcmichael stopped beating her up and agreed to allow her to go wash her face. when she didn't come back if the bathroom, police say mcmichael fled. they caught up with him at his home. officers saw a rifle, black clothing and black rope on the front seat of his jeep. he was taken into custody and apparently gave police a variety of explanations that didn't make much sense. >> this story is just crazy. it looks like this guy is just a whack job. >> reporter: mcmichael has been suspended from his job as a volunteer firefighter with the cornwells fire company. neighbors said the victim's grandparents are kind and well respected and they were surprised when we told them what happened at the home last night. >> crazy. yeah, yeah, it's pretty strange. i mean, i know him very well, i know the family and i know his granddaughter and all but, yeah, no, it was definitely different for this area. >> quiet neighborhood.

very quiet. very quiet up in here. i'm surprised we didn't all hear about it. >> reporter: again, police say they don't know of any connection between mcmichael and the teenaged victim owner than they lived in the same neighborhood in philadelphia years ago. he again, he has been suspended from the fire company and we're told it's likely he'll be dismissed. live in bensalem township, i'm sarah bloomquist, channel6 "action news." >> all right, sarah thanks very much. the former day care worker who kidnapped and sexually assaulted a five-year-old girl could now spend the rest of her life behind bars. 22-year-old christina regusters was sentenced to 4082ers to life in prison today. she was convicted of impersonating the girl's mother in order to abduct her from brian elementary school back in 2013. the child was found abandoned dressed only in a t-shirt at a playground the next morning. the attack left that girl with serious internal injuries. her family has since filed a federal civil rights lawsuit

against the school district. police in delaware are now checking to see if surveillance cameras captured a deadly hit and run in wilmington this weekend. this after a 41-year-old man was struck along the 500 block of maryland avenue just before 10 ooh:310:30 saturday night. he was rushed to the hospital. the victim succumbed to his injuries soon after. his name has not been released yet. if you have any information on this crime, please call wilmington police. >> turning now to the atlantic where the military has moved from rescue to recovery for a missing u.s. cargo ship. the coast guard now believes the el faro sank after steering into hurricane joaquin taking more than 30 people down with her. abc's stephanie ramos is working this story for us. she's live in washington, d.c. stephanie. >> reporter: sharrie, the coast guard says the heavy cargo containers may have shifted in the storm causing the ship to take on water and capsize. no survivors have been found so far but the search is not over. heavy seas and high winds

raging. this is what the container ship el faro was up against when it went missing during hurricane joaquin off the coast of the bahamas. the coast guard now saying the storm was too much for the ship. >> we covered 70,000 square nautical miles yesterday looking for the el faro. based on all of that, for our search planning efforts we are assuming that the vessel has sank. >> reporter: the ship with its 33 man crew left jacksonville, florida, tuesday set to arrive in puerto rico friday but never made it. >> we are not looking for the vessel any longer. we've modified our search efforts to focus more on potential people in the water, life boats and life rafts. there were two life boats on the el faro, one mangled lifeboat was found by the coast guard but it was empty. life rings containers oil sheen and survival suits were also found in the debris field believed to be from the ship. and there was one grim discovery. >> in one of the survival

suits we did identify human remains in one of the survival suits. we lowered a rescue swimmer to confirm that the person was deceased and it was basically unidentifiable. >> reporter: the el faro was in trouble soon after it sailed into what was then tropical storm joaquin. it lost power and all communication. >> we're not going to discounter somebody's will to survive and that's why we're still searching today. >> reporter: the slip had 28 crew members from the united states and five from poland. the coast guard says in warm water conditions a person could last four to five days in the ocean. the families of the crew remain hopeful. in washington, stephanie ramos, channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> okay, stephanie thank you. in world news tonight with david muir will continue to follow the latest development with this cargo ship disaster. live coverage begins right after "action news" at 6 o'clock. >> and now we turn our attention to meteorologist adam joseph whose got some really good news to start this work week.

>> monday the sunshine returning in most locations and it's going stick around through much of the week as well. as we take a live look right now at sky6 in center city, just a few strait tow cumulus clouds left over there but definitely plenty of breaks of blue. 68 degrees is your temperature, the dewpoint 45, winds out of the northeast at 13 and the pressure 30.10 and that is on the rise meaning better weather is around the corner and in atlantic city 62 and we're starting to see a little glimmer of light shining off of the atlantic ocean there. winds still out of the northeast but very light at 6 miles an hour and the ocean temperature dropping to 65 degrees. and just because of some leftover wave action it takes some time to kind of calm the ocean down we have a coastal flood advisory until 7 o'clock, high tide occurring right now from ocean city dune to rehoboth breach and then the back bays and the delaware bay on either side from fortescue to bowers beach there will be minor flooding this evening but nothing compared to the tides over the

>> ♪ >> all right, adam joseph our dreary streak is turning into a sunny streak and we like it. >> well deserved. we'll be rewarded this week and any rain is not going to hold off until probably friday around here so enjoy the next few days. as we take a look at the action cam which was looking up at that sunshine all aglow, this particular tree still holding onto a lot of its chlorophyl, meaning the trees kind of producing sugar and keeping it green in color but again, many of our trees especially the sugar maples starting to turn a little bit of those oranges and reds and yellows. as we look at double scan live radar, all is quiet at this point. we have some clouds that are hanging on at the shore but even there the sky is starting to brighten up but inland locations we've seen a decent amount of sun this afternoon. temperatures 67 in allentown, 68 philadelphia, 67 in wilmington. these are a couple degrees below normal. normal is 70 for this time of year for philadelphia. and right along the shore because of the lack of sun today, temperatures there much

cooler only between about 60 and 63 degrees. we look at satellite and radar, you can see that wedge of dry air to the north and west and that kind of wedge will grow in real estate the next couple of days. we've got that big pinwheeling low that has been very slow to move over the last week or so south of south carolina but notice the rain is starting to shut off and one reason is because of hurricane joaquin. you can see the cloud structure here with the hurricane moving out to sea. when that was farther down to the south, it was kind of tapping into some of that tropical moisture, throwing it around this separate low but again, because the two are now further apart the rain is shutting off to the south. temperatures tonight 51 degrees in center city. 45, that is, in the suburbs, just a few clouds out there. there could be some patchy fog the farther north and west you are from philadelphia around the lehigh valley but for tomorrow we're boosting those temperatures to 73 degrees, mostly sunny. that low still just to the south and east of the

carolinas but at the same time we're going to be saying goodbye to hurricane joaquin as it lifts to the northern atlantic and it will be due east from the southern part of new jersey about 650 miles off the coast and then on wednesday, a weak front stays to the north but you can see high pressure double barrel high to the west. that's a good thing. 76, lots of sun and a very warm afternoon for midweek. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, a string of 70's with sunshine here tuesday, wednesday, thursday but then on friday, we stay in the 70's but rain will develop as a front comes in from the north and west and behind that front wheel drop the temperature here over the weekend back into the 60's. lingering clouds especially saturday morning, some pops of sun in the afternoon, mostly sunny on sunday with the eagles in town and then seasonably cool but dry with just a few clouds on monday of 67 degrees. so, not bad in the seven days, only one day of rain we are tracking there.
