good evening and thanks for joining us. describing a living nightmare. but the ordeal hit especially close to home for the young woman you're about to hear from who escaped with her life thanks to a split second good decision and good luck. >> when i close my eyes and i'm really close to falling asleep i can hear the gunshots and i can smell -- i can smell it. >> smell the gun powder? >> yeah. >> this 18-year-old is haunted by that day. it was about 10:38 a.m. last thursday in oregon when gunfire rang out. >> somebody's outside up with of the doors shooting through the doors. >> the man terrorizing the

school was inside her writing class. >> we've got multiple gunshot wounds. we're going to need multiple ambulances on scene. >> she was one of the first to be shot by the alleged gunman during the rampage that took the lives of nine people and injured nine more. from an oregon hospital where she was recovering from surgery to remove a bullet lodged in her spine, she told us the harrowing story of how she played dead to stay alive. >> i could hear everyone breathing hard and freaking out and crying and he asked everyone to move to the center of the classroom. so we all kind of just army crawled. >> she had already been shot but didn't realize it, too focused on the terrifying scene before her. >> so you're still on the ground. what does his voice sound like? >> he sounded really deranged because he said he had been waiting to do that for a really long time and he laughed. >> he laughed? >> he laughed after he shot the

teacher. >> she says he chose one student to live apparently to carry a message for him. >> he said the kid in the glasses, get up. i need you to do me a favor. today's your lucky day. and hands him this like business envelo envelo envelope. >> he asked that the envelope reportedly containing a flash drif be turned in. >> he wasn't going to be able to do that after he was done killing the rest of us and said he was going to kill himself. >> one at a time he asked his victims to name their religion. >> the first kid that he asked that was a boy. when he said that he was religious and he said he was christian, he didn't hesitate at all. >> when the student said his religion? >> yeah. >> he immediately was shot? >> yeah. the shooter said that he would only feel pain for a couple of

seconds and that he would be with god soon and then he shot him. >> i'm not sure what to make of his questions and his own statements. what do you make of that? >> i think he asked our religions and shot the christians in the head because he thinks the earth is evil. and he didn't want us to suffer on earth like maybe he was suffering. so, he was maybe thinking that oh, i'll just put you out of your misery and the fastest way possible. >> and when you were shot, and are you thinking that you might not make it out of that room? >> yeah. i didn't -- i didn't think i was going to make it. >> but then officers arrived on the scene and exchanged gunfire with the shooter. it all ended when he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> i heard that one kid in my class say that he was dead. he's dead. he's shot in the head. everything's okay. that's why i opened my eyes and

i didn't want to open my eyes. i just -- i did. and looked around the classroom. it was horrible. it was the worst thing i had ever seen in my life. >> someone asked me can you forgive the shooter. >> the pastor's daughter was in the classroom. >> she said daddy number one i began to pray and secondly i knew i was going to die today. >> playing dead after fellow student was fatally shot and fell on top of her. >> i believe in the last moments that he had any conscious whatsoever i believe he said i am going to roll on to lacy. >> amazingly she also survived and this weekend she attended church with this man, the student witnesses say was chosen directly by the gunman to live. and chris, the army vet credited with confronting the gunman and warning others released this video from his hospital bed. >> hello everyone. i'm doing well and i'm

overwhelmed by the support i have gotten from everybody. >> we know that harper carried six guns and owned at least seven more all legally obtained, renewing the gun debate. >> how many people have to die before we actually act? >> today hillary clinton unveiled a sweeping gun control plan calling for a crack down of the sale of guns on the internet and gun shows vowing to bypass congress if necessary if she is voted into congress. at one point she grew emotional while introducing a mother whose child was killed during the 2013 sandy hook shooting. >> so many of the parents of the precious children who were murdered have taken the unimaginable grief that they have been bear iing and have trd to be the voices that we need to hear. >> some schools are taking

matters in their own hands. lock down drills are almost as common as fire drills. >> attention this is a drill. we need to lock down. >> please go behind my desk. >> the teacher locks the door, pulls down the shade and everyone is told to keep quiet. >> this is a drill. >> my colleague david wright spent time in colorado schools running training drills last year. >> it's kind of scarey, huh? >> kind of. >> do you know why they do it? >> former swat team member specializes in active shooter training. here at sky view academy, he and his trainer teaches the teachers how to spring into action. he says there are windows of opportunity to take down a shooter that you won't know unless you're trained like when the shooter engages in dialogue
