jersey correspondent nora muchanic live along route 30 where this all happened. nora. >> reporter: sharrie, rick, that's what police are telling us and why they want the driver to come forward. it was dark out at the time. the victim was dressed all in black and hopping that median in traffic when he was hit. it was crossing route 30 like this, hopping over the concrete median that landed a pleasantville man in the hospital and police looking for the driver who hit him. >> we do not have any information on the vehicle involved or the driver. it's a possibility that the driver didn't even know that they struck this person. >> reporter: it happened around 10:30 saturday night in the 1400 block of route 30 west right across from the humane society. a man later identified as 35-year-old juan melton was found lying in the road unconscious. >> it wasn't a full frontal impact. so, the pedestrian was either

on the driver's side door or passenger -- or he made it halfway through the street and the mirror could have -- the passenger side mirror could have clipped the pedestrian. >> reporter: melton suffered a broken arm is that hospitalized in stable condition. police say he was wearing all black clothing at the time of the accident. >> yes, you got to watch it. >> reporter: ethel lives across from where melton was hit and says people cross that median in traffic all the time. >> if there's a lot of traffic i just stand there until it dies down. it could rain. it could be snow. i'm going to stay. people like to hop that and try to get between the cars and you can't do that. >> reporter: police are urging anyone who may have seen the crash and the driver to come forward quickly. >> possibility they might not even known they hit a person and with the dark clothing and so forth. we just want to get the full story of this and get this squared away. >> reporter: now as you can

see there are cameras outside the humane society but they weren't pointing in the direction of the accident unfortunately. a broken mirror was found at the scene but it doesn't have any serial numbers or information to help police identify the make of the car. again, depending on the circumstances, the hit and run driver may not face criminal charges but of course police want to talk to them. live in atlantic city, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." >> okay, nora, thank you. meantime philadelphia police say they have arrested one of four people wanted for a deadly robbery that happened in the city's logan section last week. 23-year-old pedro redding was arrested in connection with the death of 22-year-old keisha jenkins. jenkins who is also known as stephan jenkins was attacked early tuesday morning. she was beaten to the ground and then shot twice in the back according to police. detectives say redding was a part of the robbery but he is not the gunman. from our delaware news room now police in wilmington

are looking for this man, 36-year-old joselito rojas wanting for a stabbing at the robinson court apartments last night. the 57-year-old victim was stabbed in the upper body and remains in critical condition. rojas and the victim both live in the complex and police say they got into a fight that then led to the stabbing. if you know the whereabouts of rojas, you're urged to call new castle county police. >> new jersey state police are investigating the death of a former firefighter from springfield township in burlington county. 79-year-old roger lippincott was using his lawnmower on sailors pond road when it caught fire yesterday. it appears lippincott tried to put out the blaze himself but suffered severe burns. the flag is flying at half-staff. he also taught at burlington county's fire academy. a freshman on the football team at albright college is charged with trying to kill his teammate. police say the 18-year-old

suspect stabbed the victim with a corkscrew. walter perez is outside of the campus in reading berks county tonight with the full story. walter. >> reporter: well, reading police are calling this a prime example of senseless violence. two up and coming college football players have a misunderstanding and now one is in the hospital and the other's behind bars. 18-year-old marquise stuart was a standout football player at freedom high school in bethlehem. he was just beginning what was shaping up to be a promising football career at albright college in reading but tonight he's in jail, charged with attempted murder. his classmates at albright are stunned. >> i didn't expect something like that to happen here. >> scary because so many things have been happening on college campuses lately. there's better ways to work things out rather than to stab. >> reporter: investigators say it started unfolding this past saturday night when stewart got into a scuffle with a fellow fresh nan

football player. that fight was broken up and they went their separate ways. a few hours later though right around 2 o'clock sunday morning the two crossed paths again inside the commons of an on campus dormitory. that's when stewart allegedly grabbed a corkscrew and attacked the 18-year-old victim. >> appears he was stabbed multiple times serious enough obviously that required medical attention immediately. at this point the victim is stable and recovering. >> reporter: stewart was arrested and is now being held on $400,000 bail. officials from albright college say violence on their campus is extremely rare and they're doing everything they can to return to a sense of normalcy. >> we've been in touch with the families. we've offered counseling services to students who may be upset by what they've heard. and we're just going the try and come together and heal as a community and move forward. >> reporter: now, investigators are not releasing the victim's name at this time but we can say he's from new castle county, delaware. meanwhile, marcus stewart is facing some very, very serious charges including attempted

homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. reporting live from reading, walter perez channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> okay, walter, thank you. south carolina is moving into recovery mode after historic rainfall across the state. assessment teams are now fanning out to determine exactly how much damage the floods actually caused. today governor nikki haley said teams of mental health professionals and insurance workers will visit the hardest hit areas. >> our focus now is very much reducing the number of people in shelters making sure they have good permanent housing and good permanent placement in where they're going to go. we'll be working on all that this week school officials say a boil water advisory remains in effect. they hope to open school before the end of this week. the day started off a little chilly but it quickly

warmed up and the sun continues to shine. meteorologist cecily tynan joining us now with of course the look of the accuweather forecast, a nice monday but some rain possibly on the way, cecily. >> and we do have some changes on the way tomorrow. today, though, a gorgeous day after a chilly morning. allentown dropped down to 41 degrees, millville the same, glassboro 42, smyrna 44 and philadelphia not quite that cool, the urban heat island effect kept us in the 50's, 51 degrees. but a nice recovery with the temperatures under that bright sunshine outside. the place to be today. 74 degrees in philadelphia currently. allentown 75. reading 74. millville 70 and on the beaches with the wind off the ocean, the ocean temperature 65 degrees. little bit cooler on the beaches currently temperatures in the mid 60's but 68 degrees is the average high for this time of the year so temperatures well above that. now, satellite6 along with action radar showing that we have high pressure over us right now, that's keeping us cloud free. however, if you look up to the north and west, you can see

this monday. hi, autumn. >> hi, sharrie and rick. schuylkill expressway eastbound lanes looking like a columbus holiday. our westbound lanes not so much. this is right around the conshohocken curve. we have police activity ahead causing a slow down. about 45 minutes it's taking you right now do that commute from the vine street expressway out to the blue route right now. so, some slow going lanes in the westbound side. taking a look at 95 northbound, here we are right around ridly park. we had an earlier accident on the platt bridge and we're still slow out here because of it and keep in mind we have a flyers game out that the tonight and that never helps the traffic on 95 as you're making your way up towards broad street. one accident to tell you about, this is in langhorne, pine street near flowers avenue keep that in mind that that's outer there. moving right along and showing you what the speeds are looking like. we're 10 miles per hour in those really slow going lanes on the westbound side of the schuylkill right now. we'll keep on eye on these things and bring you an update in the next half hour. back to you rick and sharrie. >> autumn thank you.

>> southwest airlines has recovered from a glitch that delayed hundreds of flights over the weekend. travelers faced long lines yesterday as the company used backup systems is that handwritten boarding passes to check people in. southwest blames the failed software application that affected the airline's web site, its mobile app and its computers. the problem was fixed by 6 o'clock this morning here at philadelphia international airport. but the airline still warned people to arrive early and printer boarding passes at home to avoid any issues. tonight we know what caused the emergency landing of a commercial jet after it took off from new jersey. the alaska airlines flight was headed from newark to seattle but had to divert to buffalo, new york. officials say a melting battery in a credit card

reader began emitting smoke on the plane. the flight crew will to spray it way fire extinguishers. 184 people were on board but no one was hurt. >> ♪ >> on health check we are kicking off our week long series with the american cancer society to help more people beat the odds against breast cancer. >> that's right. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman shares the story of one local woman's breast cancer fight. >> when a woman gets breast cancer, she can't help but worry if it will spread or come back. now scientists in philadelphia have made some discoveries about cancer that spreads. and it could help more men and women beat the disease. >> all right. let's go to the first one. >> er is rita jordan was just 35 years old when she had her first encounter with breast cancer. after surgery and chemotherapy, serita was cancer free and working hard on rebuilding her health and raising four kids. along the way, she got hooked on running. >> it was just freeing.

it felt good. and i went from 5k to 10k to half marathons. >> but early last year, a nagging headache sent her for medical tests and the diagnosis was stunning. >> i had a tumor wedged between my brain and my skull. >> meanwhile, across town at wistar group dr. frank's team is learning how wine some cancers spread. he's a second generation cancer sleuth. his father was director of the national cancer institute in 1974. that's when the u.s. declared war on the disease. he's found a very small set of genes which allow malignant cells to leave a tumor and they don't go alone, they take their own support system of blood vessels. here's how he explains it. >> if you leave your house or your child levers your house for college you give them some of the furniture. >> the cells are also cloaked in platelets so they can evade ththe immune system.

the kind of fall-like forecast, at least this morning it was almost wintry. >> it was chilly this morning. some of our areas, quakertown dropping down into the 30's but then recovering back into the 70's and a lot of pictures like this tweeted to me and posted on my facebook page. this is from tracy lee from turnersville, new jersey, and you can see the sugar maple all aglow in red and looking even nicer the blue skies behind. the leaves are starting to change. although today this afternoon really not feeling like fall. we're in the 70's. average high for this time of year 68 degrees. philadelphia currently 74, the same in trenton. 75 in allentown. 71 in wilmington. then as you get closer to the ocean, the ocean temperature 65 degrees with the winds off the ocean, it is cooler along the beaches. cape may currently 66 and beach haven 67 degrees and winds generally about five to 15 miles per hour. so, a little bit of a breeze out there but the winds will really be whipping tomorrow night. behind this cold front. satellite6 along with action

radar showing you can see that signature comma shape. the actual low pressure will move up over canada so what we'll be dealing with is a frontal passage tomorrow afternoon and ahead of it a lot of clouds will be bubbling up and occasional showers. future tracker showing around 7 o'clock in the morning we will see some filtered sunshine, most of the clouds to the north and west and then as we head into the morning hours, around 10 o'clock, maybe a couple sprinkles in the northwest suburbs and the main event will happen later in the day ahead of a cold front with a scattered line of some showers around 5:30 and then reaching the coast by about 8 o'clock and then moving off by 10 ooh clock and . skies will be clearing. winds will be whipping. tomorrow at 8:30 wind gusts anywhere from 20 to almost 30 miles per hour and this will help deliver some cooler air as we head through the week but the real cold air arriving behind another cold front over the weekend. so, tonight partly cloudy, a little bit of patchy fog late tonight, not as chilly as last

>> hello again. monica is off. sharrie williams joining us tonight. here's what's happening on "action news" monday evening. thousands of southwest airlines passengers are on their way after a major computer glitch led to big delays including here in philadelphia. a texas police department is once again under fire after officers taser is a city councilman in his front yard and it was caught on tape. several delaware firefighters have a litter of newborn kittens while out on call. we'll have the story of this special delivery. >> now the details. southwest airlines, officials are still trying to figure out what caused the computer glitch that then led to headaches for thousands of travelers. you're taking a live look now at philadelphia international airport through our sky6 camera. things are returning and becoming more smoothly with southwest flights right now but 24 hours ago, it was a very different story. >> that's right. a major technical issue impacted the southwest web site its mobile app computers and reservation centers.

passengers were forced to wait in long lines to check in. "action news" reporter trish hartman has the story. >> reporter: southwest passengers breathe antidepressants sigh of relief as they checked in for their flights monday after technical problems caused big delays over the weekend. >> we're here early but there's no line. >> reporter: that's good, right. >> that's great, yeah. now we'll go eat. >> reporter: among the happy passengers, this newlywed couple from chester brook headed for a florida honeymoon. >> we heard on the radio that there were computer issues so since we got married yesterday we were hoping that it would be nice and easy and no problems. >> reporter: the trouble started sunday morning when a technical glitch affected the airline's web site, mobile app and computers. hundreds of southwest flights were delayed on sunday, handwritten boarding passes were issued at some airports slowing things down and causing some passengers to miss their flights. while it was smooth sailing here at the terminal it was a busy day on the southwest twitter feed, the airline actually used twitter to give people updates on their flights and also to help

people reschedule their flights they may have missed because of the glitch. >> not using the word try, not using the word can't. must have a can do spirit. >> reporter: by 6:00 all southwest computers were back up and running for phl for this family with a four and six-year-old flying for the first time they heeded the warnings and arrived two hours ahead of time just to be safe. >> i just heard we got to get here early because we might be really held up and i guess we're early enough. i was a little nervous about it but -- and these guys being their first flight it was tough to get them up and getting them going reporter: reporting from philadelphia international airport, trish harder man channel6 "action -- 6 "action news." >> police are looking for the person who targeted a 7-eleven in feltonville on rising sun and wyoming avenues after 4:30 a.m. witnesses told police the suspect walked in demand money then ran off. still not clear what if anything was taken. no one was hurt. and remember, when breaking news or weather happens in your area, we invite you to join the action.

you go tow jail. turn around. >> i'm not saying nothing. get your hands off me. >> reporter: before miller is tasered on his knees with his back the police. miller later spoke to houston station khou after he was charged and released from jail. >> it went from me asking questions to me basically being put in a take down other ground. i'm curious to have a conversation with those officers. >> reporter: in a statement police insisting this was a clear case of resisting arrest. >> we want to make sure we do a thorough and complete investigation to make sure that everything is looked at. >> reporter: the police chief also revealing the female officer seen in this video was at the scene during the traffic stop and controversial arrest of sandra bland over the summer. who authorities later found dead hanging in her jail cell. meanwhile miller was charged with interfering with public duties and resisting arrest. the officers involved are still on the job and the case now under investigation.

in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news. >> students return to class today at umpqua community college in oregon. oregon governor kate brown toured the campus greeting students and staff. it was back on october 1st when 26-year-old christopher harp per mercer opened fire in a classroom killing nine people and injuring nine others. the gunman then committed suicide after being wounded by police. the building where the shootings took place still remains closed. the washington post is calling the conviction of one of its journalists in an iranian court "outrageous injustice." jason rezaian who has been in custody for more than a year in tehran has been found guilty of espionage and other charges. he faces 20 years in prison. the executive editor of the washington post says rezaian's trial was held in secret and there was no evidence of his wrongdoing.

world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the american convicted in iran as well as the texas taser incident and the southwest airlines glitch. you can watch that following "action news" at 6:00. >> well, at the jersey shore lucy the elephant the wooden historic landmark has said no to peta. people for the ethical treatment of animals or peta had offered to help pay for lucy's $60,000 restoration project but only if they could in return use her as a spokes elephant of sorts. peta wanted to decorate lucy way shackle on were you ever her feet and a teardrop below one eye to raise awareness about the plight of circus elephants but the margate company in charge of lucy's restoration say no thanks. they say lucy must always be a happy place for children to visit. however, officials say a portion of any of the funds raised for lucy's repair will be donated to several elephant sanctuaries. >> firefighters stumbled on a find following a fire fight in wilmington delaware last week. they found five kittens sitting among what was left of

a vacant property on the 600 block of west eighth street. amazingly the kittens which are between a week and two weeks old were not injured in the fire and are in other wise great shape. one of the firefighters dropped the litter off today to the delaware humane society. >> we're going to do all we can to get them bottle fed for a few weeks and get them old enough that we can spay, neuter them and find homes for them. >> well, volunteers at the humane society say they are still looking for the kittens' mother who may have been scared off during that fire. >> students who walk or bike to school were singled out in one delaware school district today and awarded for their healthy lifestyle. delaware's department of transportation sponsored its annual safe routes to school event here at claymont elementary. for the past 10 years the state has encouraged students to walk or bike to school, if they can as a way to encourage a more healthy and active lifestyle.

fishermen on a pier lowered down a boogie board and a crab net to help the victim stay afloat. eventually lifeguards were able to rescue all six people. but dramatic moments there. the american dentist who killed cecil the lion in zimbabwe will not face charges. today authorities in zimbabwe decided they will not prosecute walter palmer. officials say palmer had all the papers necessary for a hunter. the prized lion was killed in early july after it was lured from a national park. the minnesota dentist was vilified on social media. he even received death threats. palmer has always maintained that the hunt was legal. >> california has become the first state in the nation to ban public schools from naming their sports teams redskins. governor jerry brown as i understand the legislation into law today. four schools statewide use that mascot which is seen as a slur against native americans. there is an ongoing effort for the washington redskins to change its name as well.
