picture poster on facebook. >> he was playing with another little boy next door. i'm sorry. >> reporter: it's okay. >> at only three it's just hard to look at. >> reporter: the toddler was reported missing by a family member at 6 o'clock this morning less than three hours later the horrifying news, his body had been found in a wooded area off south park drive in cooper river park. police will not reveal any details about how the child died. >> we would need to wait for the medical examiner to conduct an autopsy in order to determine a manner of death. >> reporter: are there any obvious signs of injury. >> we're not going to discuss that at this point. >> reporter: a massive search for the child began this morning after area residents received telephone alerts and news of brendan's disappearance exploded on facebook. >> we came out to help and as soon as i got to here to walk they started blocking offer the tape. it was about 9 o'clock they had put the tape up and everybody had their heads down. >> reporter: you realized it was too late. >> someone said they called the search off. >> reporter: the boy's body was located about a half mile from his father's house.

resident and police want to know how he got there. >> i could not imagine to lose a kid like. that it's just crazy and who did that i hope they find who did it. >> reporter: a woman who identified herself as a relative of brendan's father described the toddler she would see at family parties. >> he was off and on. playful little boy. energetic always happy. >> any time we have a case involving a death of a child, you know, it's going to be very tragic and tough for investigators to deal with but we will handle this as professionals. >> reporter: now, over the last couple of minutes police have been paying a lot of attention to that black truck parked in front of brendan's father's house with the doors opened right there. we're told that brendan lived with his mother nearby but that his parents who are not married shared custody. we're still awaiting autopsy results and according to a neighborhood page on facebook, there's going to be a vigil for brendan planned at dusk tonight at holy saviour church

which is just a few blocks from here. live in haddon township, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you, nora. our coverage of this death investigation continues on 6abc.com. it will have the latest information as it becomes available along with photographs and videos and the latest social media posts from our "action news" team. a 50-year-old man died this morning, that after being shot late last night during a home invasion. it happened in the 1100 block of ruby street in southwest philadelphia. live at police headquarters tonight is "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist. sarah, what's the latest on this? >> reporter: jim, police are trying to figure out exactly why these three suspects targeted tony harris. something possibly a facebook post led them to believe there was money inside his southwest philadelphia home. police say there was no money. they shot harris anyway while his three young children slept upstairs.

homicide detectives returned to 11:30 south ruby street this morning as they try to figure out why three masked men targeted this house and the homeowner last night. >> they just came in demanding money. >> reporter: 50-year-old tony harris' wife said they were just getting ready to go to bed around 11 o'clock. the couple's three children ages five, two and 10 months, were already asleep upstairs when the doorknob turned and the suspects barged in brandishing weapons. >> one took me straight to the kitchen and put a gun behind my head. and they was telling him, well, you can't move and they was going to blow my head off. >> they kept saying where is the money. sort of lets us believe they believed there was a large amount of money somewhere in the house. why they thought that we don't know. >> reporter: harris 's wife heard her husband struggling with two of the suspects in the living room. >> they started tussling and the guy that was on me got off of me and went to them in the

living room and i heard one shot. >> reporter: harris died from that single gunshot wound to the head this morning. police believe the suspects tried to steal his shot gun but dropped it on the front porch as they fled. harris sells and repairs electronics for people in the neighborhood. police are also aware he posted a photo to facebook earlier this month showing his wife holding what appeared to be a large sum of cash. >> we do know of that post that was put up. so obviously that's a possible motive that we're looking at but we don't know if that definitively got him killed or not. >> reporter: police believe the suspects may be young, possibly between 17 and 19 years old. as with all homicides here in the city of philadelphia, there is a $20,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction. live at police headquarters, i'm sarah bloomquist, channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you, sarah. the wilmington fire marshal is now investigating whether two fires that broke out within hours of each other were connected. investigators believe both may

have been set on purpose. the first blaze erupted at 8 o'clock sunday night in the home -- or in a home on the 700 block of north madison street. 12 hours later crews putter out a fire on the 600 block of west eighth street. that property was vacant but firefighters did rescue kittens that were inside. the bucks county firefighter charged with kidnapping and assault went before a judge today in bensalem. 21-year-old shane mcmichael arrived this morning for his preliminary hearing. police say that on october 4th mcmichael forced his way into the home of a 17-year-old girl then beat and choked her. police claim mcmichael has confessed. mcmichael remains in jail on $2 million bail. in delaware county, springfield high school was evacuated this afternoon, all because of an electronic cigarette. officials say a student had the e-cigarette in his pocket when it came into contact with some coins. that caused the device to

overheat and spark. the student suffered minor burns on his hand and hip. officials cleared the building as a precaution. nobody else was hurt. classes resumed a short time later. sky6 is live atop morgan hall north on the campus of temple university. we are having pleasant fall-like temperatures tonight but we're also getting ready for our coldest weather of the fall. meteorologist cecily tynan is live at the "action news" big board. cecily, what are those latest facts and figures? >> jim, we'll be going from warm weather to seasonable weather to down right chilly weather by the weekend. the past three days, though, unseasonably warm. yesterday and today, 76 degrees. that's 8 degrees above normal but now a cold front is moving in and that will bring us some changes. now, double scan 3-d showing that we are seeing some showers and even a few thunderstorms with this. the thunderstorms really confined to the south. there's one line i've been tracking moving out of maryland and it's right over the border of new castle

victim as 58-year-old james shay of browns mills. shay was found dead outside a convenience store sunday afternoon. investigators say that shay was trying to get items from the clothing bin when he lost his footing, slipped and became trapped. family and friends are remembering the life and legacy of former naacp president in philadelphia jerry mondesire. a viewing is being held until 8 o'clock tonight at bright hope baptist church in north philadelphia. one of the people attending police commissioner charles ramsey. the civil rights leader died october 4th at the age of 65. a celebration of life ceremony for mondesire will be tomorrow morning at 11:00 also at bright lop hope baptist chur. coming up phillies break grounds on a new facility that will help budding baseball stars hone their skills all year long. and the sixers hope that a certain practice they're doing off the court will prove

>> this is just in to "action news." philadelphia police have just announced that the 14-year-old boy who was shot last night in north philadelphia has died. 14-year-old deval johnson was shot several times in the 1200 block of north tenth street. police say they don't know who shot him or why. a vigil for the teenager is now under way at the scene of

the shooting. temple university renamed its medical school in honor of the late businessman and philanthropist lewis katz. it is now the lewis katz school of medicine. there was a celebration this morning. katz died in a plane crash in 2014. prior to his death, the philadelphia inquirer co-had co-owner donated $25 million to temple. that gift was the single largest contribution in the school's history. katz is a graduate -- was a graduate of temple and served on its board of trustees. >> it is the home of the anderson monarchs in south philadelphia. it will soon be equipped with an extra ordinary baseball facility. the phillies mlb urban youth academy. "action news" reporter david henry was there today and has the story. >> reporter: mayor michael nutter its philly phanatic teamed up to help break ground at the marion anderson rec center soon the site of a state of the art indoor baseball practice facility for inner city kids.

the mlb urban youth academy has well maintained playing fields. the kids will soon be able to hone their skills indoors all winter long and not just baseball skills. >> one of the main things is the educational element that we're going to bring to this that prepare these kids for college. >> reporter: steve has been coaching baseball at the anderson center for almost 30 years launching the anderson monarchs and coaching the now legendary taney dragons. the kids he coaches now will have the same advantages as suburban kids thanks to the generosity of the phillies major league baseball and the city. it's an effort to expose more inner city kids to a sport that requires a lot of open space. >> maybe identify somebody that will be a talent enough to play big league ball but at the very least maybe they'll get a college scholarship or an opportunity to play in college that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. >> reporter: when the indoor facility is up and running next spring about 8,000 boys and girls in the city will have access to free baseball

struggling. yesterday the bright blue skies, the sunshine today we've been seeing a mixture of clouds and sun, had one round of scattered showers earlier. that second round moving through right now. the actual cold front is across central pennsylvania. that will be moving through tonight. so after a few evening showers, a few thunderstorms, skies will be partly cloudy and it will begin to get a little bit cooler. nothing unusual. 56 degrees in philadelphia. allentown 47. trenton 52. millville 51. and cape may 56 degrees. then for your wednesday, it will be breezy, cooler than today but temperatures still slightly above normal with a mixture of clouds and sunshine, 69 degrees. on thursday, this high pressure nudges closer. this will diminish the winds bring us wall to wall sunshine and temperatures where they should be for this time of year, 67 degrees and then things change for the weekend. so, if you look at the forecast temperature compared to average, thursday right where we should be for this time of the year. friday, though the temperature is dropping 3 degrees below

average. with that next cold front and then the bottom drops out with temperatures saturday's high 8 degrees below average and sunday 12 degrees below average. overnight lows will be dropping down into the 30's and we actually could see some patchy frost sunday and monday morning if the winds diminish enough in some of the suburbs. so, it is going to get cold. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow not too bad. sun mixing with clouds, a breezy day with a high of 69 degrees. on thursday, the winds diminish, mostly sunny skies, temperatures where they should be for this time of the year, 67 degrees. really a nice fall day. on friday, that next cold front arrives, like the cold front moving through now limited in moisture so mostly cloudy skies. not all day heavy rain but a few showers with a high of 64 degrees. and look at what happens for the weekend. the coolest air mass so far this season. breezy, 58 degrees on saturday. if you're heading to the temple football game you
