70 on wednesday and then thursday a little cooler with rain and high of 68. that's next seven days here's what to expect this winter. >> during the past five years we have had wild swings of winter weather only four inches of snow one season to as much as 68 inches. last winter started mild and february was one of the cold easton record. half of the months temp never climbed above freezing, total snow 27" slightly above average and hit by ice storm and deadly morning of freezing rain. with this winter be as harsh. you heard now we're in midst of near record el nino. what is that? typically east west trade winds keep eastern pacific cool ocean water and during el nino trade winds ease and louz warmer watt to move east towards coast of south america and inxlunss

weather patterns around the world. you see the warm water in red. in addition to that another factor i'm watching is what's known as pacific decadal ossilation in a warm phase bringing warm water along the west coast. what this can do is magnify affects ofel kneeo. el nino and this is a split, slow pattern it pushes polar jet stream north allowing mild pacific air to invade the us and locks cold air up north for much of winter and meantime this intensifies moisture supply along the southern is jet. increasing potential stormyness across the south into the mid-atlantic. with a mild air in place this favors a lot of rain. not a lot of snow and at least early in the season but there's signs that late in winter we get shots of arctic air in the north f cold air arriving in north is same time as moisture moving from south the jet
1:57 am
streams phase and come together and this creates blocking and this can create really big snowstorm. it's really all about the timing. so if you look at the five strongest el nino winters since 1950 shows extremely wide range as little as that zero. no snow at all to close to 4" of snow. and one of the strongest el nino's on record 82-83 started mile in december and got snow and progressively got colder and one big blockbuster storm in february brought more than 21" of snow. that's 60% of entire season snowfall. so all it rally takes is one big storm to produce a snowy winter. and now one factor to consider is just how deep the supply of cold air will be this winter and research has shown a strong indication is amount of snow that falls over siberia during the month of october. and now this year the snow pack you can see it in orange is above average. like last year. so there's a lot of cold air
1:58 am
available to the north. and i think we will into some of this during the second half of the winter. so, this is what i expect this winter. the active southern jet with give us above normal precipitation. however, the december and january will be relatively mild. so a lot of storms will either be all rain or quickly change to rain. however, when we get into february it gets a lot colder. and we could get one or two big snow storms if things line up. and so as far as snowfall we can expect near normal this winter, 20 to 4" and i have to say, this is a low confidence forecast. why? well if the el nino pattern holds strong the sea saw goes down little as 12". but if we can get strong late season blocking, that can create a very snow didn't winter, dips the other way up to 3" of snow. so one thing is certain. you'll need to stay tuned to the accuweather forecast each
