solidarity to deliver justice to these terrorists and those that sent them. and to defend our nations. in that spirit with heavy but strong hearts, i welcome you here today.y than usual. i've been traveling. and, this is an i welcome you here today and a heavy day for our nations and for the world. this barbaric terrorist group, isol in its ideology poses a serious threat to all of us, it cannot be tolerated and it must be destroyed and we must do it together. it's it's unity of purpose that brings us here today. on the visit here last year you said that the french love america and we love the french. and sometimes we americans are

too shy to say so but we are not feeling shy today. we americans love france because we dedicate ourselves to the same ideals that all people deserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. france is our oldest ally, you helped us win our independence, we helped liberate france from fascists, and we are a freedom to each other, we love france for your spirit and your culture. since the attacks americans have recalled their own visits to paris, visiting the eiffel tower or walking along the river. these are woven along the fabrics of our lives and our culture, i am grateful to the french people for the hospit hospitality they have always

shown me and welcomed my wife michelle and our daughters for thord first visit to the city of lights. next to my bed in the residence is a picture of me and michelle in the gardens kissing. i have no greater memory, so when strategy struck that evening, our hearts broke too. that stadium and concert hall and those restaurants and cafes, we see our own. in the face of the french people we see ourselves, and that is why so many americans have embraced the blue, white and red and that is why americans have candle light vigils and joined together to sing the anthem. and we never forgot how the french people stood with us on

9/11, and we stand with you. it's been noted that the terrorists did not direct their attacks against the french government or military, rather they focused their violence on the spirit of france and by extension to all liberal democracies, this is an attack on our free and open societies, where people come together to celebrate and sing and compete and targeting venues where people come together from around the world, killing citizens of nearly 20 countries including america. this was an attack on the very idea that people of different races and religions and backgrounds could live together in peace. in short this was not only a strike against one of the world's great cities, it was an attack against the world itself. the same madness that has slaughterered the innocent from

nigeria to the sinai to iraq. it's a scourge that threatens all of us. that is where for more than a year, the united states, france, and our coalition of some 65 nations have been united in one mission. to destroy these isol terrorists and defeat their vial ideology. today president obama hollande and i have reviewed our today with air strikes and partners on the ground have pushed isol back from territory in both iraq and syria. today president hollande and i agree our nations must do more together and assistance has suped french strikes in syria and we'll keep stepping up that court nation, and as we saw with

the attack in mali, the terrorist attacks goes beyond. this week i sign legislation to sustain our support including air lift and intelligence to allies like france as we work to root out terrorists in places like africa and do more to prevent attacks at home. the united states will quickly share threat information with france and in the wake of paris and with the threats in belgium there is a growing recognition among european nations that they need to ramp up to prevent the flow of fighters, as part of that, i am calling on the european union to implement the agreement that would cause airlines to share passenger information to do more to stop foreign fighters from coming to our nation's undetected and i am

sending agents to work on this with foreign countries to work together. regarding the broader crisis in syria, president hollande and i agree that strikes against the moderate opposition only bolsters the assad regimes, we believe that russia could play a more constructive role if it shifted the focus of its strike to defeating isol and likewise president hollande and i agree that the best way to bring peace to syria is with the principles of vienna, a cease fire away from assad to a democratically elected government that can unite the people against terrorists. finally, we understand that one of our greatest weapons in the fight against isol is the

strength and resilience of our people. here i want to speak directly to the american people. what happened in paris is truly horrific. i understand that people worry that something similar to happen here. i want you to know that we will continue to do everything in our power to defend our nation. since 9/11 we have taken extraordinary measures to strengthen our homeland security. our counter terrorism, homeland security and law enforcement professionals, federal state and local they are tireless, they have prevented attacks and they have saved lives, they are working every hour every day for our security. they did so before paris, they do so now and they will not stop.

they are the best in the world. but it's not just our security professional that will defeat isol and other terrorist groups. as american we all have a role to play and how we respond to threats. groups like isol cannot defeat us on the battlefield so they try to terrorize us at home against soft targets and civilians and innocent people even as we are vigilant, we cannot and will not succumb to fear. nor can we allow fear to divide us. for that is how terrorists win. we cannot give them the victory of how we go about living our lives. the good news is americans are resilie resilient. we mourned the lives lost at ft. hood, the boston marathon,

chattanooga, but we did not waiver. our communities have come together and we have gone to ball games and we have gone to concerts and gone shopping and men and women that want to serve our country continue to go to military recruiting offices. we are vigilant, we take precautions but we go about our business. to those that want to harm us, our actions have shown that we have too much resolve and too much character. americans will not be terrorized. i say all this because another part of being vigilant, another part of defeating isol is holding up the freedoms that define our two republicans, that includes freedom of religion, that includes equality before

the law. there have been times in our history in moments of fear when we have failed to uphold our highest ideals. and it has been to our lasting regret. we must uphold our ideals now. each of us all of us, must show that america is strengthened by people of every faith and every background. related to this, i want to say that under french president hollande france plans to welcome in 30,000 refugees, in the united states, refugees go up to two years of screening. nobody goes through more screening than refugees, and we are prepared to share the tools

with france and our european partners. as he said, our humanitarian duty to help desperate refugees and our duty to the security, those duty goes hand in hand. on the statue of liberty, a gift from the people of france. there are words we know so well. give your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free, that is the spirit that makes us america and the spirit that binds us to france. that is the spirit we need today. in closing i want to salute the people of paris for showing the world how to stay strong in the face of terrorism. even as they grieve, people have become returning to their cafes and riding the metro and going

to stadiums to cheer for their teams. and crowds gathered in the republic including a mother that brought her children, she said to let them see we are not afraid. as one parisian said paris will always be paris and next week i will be joining president hollande and world leaders in paris for the global climate conference. what a powerful rebuke to the terrorist it will will he when the world stands as one and shows we will not be deterred from building a better future for our children. so president hollande, and my fellow americans, lets remember we face greater threats to our way of life before. fascism communism, the first

world war and the second, a long cold war. each and every time we prevailed. we have prevailed because our way of life is stronger. because we stay united. because even as we are relentless in the face of evil, we draw on what is best in ourselves and the characters of our countries, it will be no different think time. make no mistake, we will win and groups like isol will lose, and standing with allies with france will show the best of american leadership. viva la france. mr. president? >> ladies and gentlemen please

i do not forget either all of the messages that the american people sent to the french people over the past few days. the french colors and the french flags all around in my gatherings these candles in places that represent france here in the united states. our national anthem sung in official ceremonies, it is true that 9/11 we all felt american. but after the 13th of november americans felt french, our two peoples together merged as one. sharing the same emotion and also the same willingness to fight for freedom, to fend for

our values. we are not too similar people, we have our own history, we have own culture and background but we share the same trust. the same faith in freedom. it is france that came under attack on the 13th of november. france for what it is, the country that we consider unique in the world because france -- the world france came under attack for what it represents for what stands for culture, our way of living, as well as our values, our principles but by targeting france, the terrorists, the cowardly murders were targeting the world, in these restaurants and these

cafes as well as at bataclan, there were men and women most of them young who came from 20 countries. at least. and they share the same passion for life and that is the reason they were murdered. my thoughts are with the friends and family of a young american studentaomi gonzales that came to enjoy a culture of joy and the american band playing at the bataclan, our culture on that occasion worked together to bring the same enthusiasm and were hit by terrorists. we are facing the terror group

reject identifying migration and terrorism. at the same time we must control the borders. today people are risking their lives to flee. when they travel between turkey and greece turkey therefore plays an important role and it's together with turkey we must find solutions, so that the refugees can stay close to their country of origin, and we need to make sure that the required controls, the checks are implemented at the border, on thursday i will be traveling to moscow to meet with vladimir putin and i will tell him that france can work together with russia if russia concentrates its military attention against
