brings a needle to school. and parents of five students were especially distraught because those five students were stuck. the big story on "action news" tonight is a 7-year-old girl and a batch of needles. it is a combination that sounded an alarm at a philadelphia school. live at school district headquarters and "action news" reporter, dann cuellar. what do the officials know so far? >> well jim, they know that a 7-year-old got ahold of hy hypodermic needles and brought them into the classroom and taughted her classmates with them. >> this is nothing to play with, this is needles. you don't know where the needles came from. >> alarmed parents reacting after a second grader brought hypodermic needles into her classroom. and one said she was taughting them in a child-like game. >> she was chasing us. >> with the needles? >> yeah. >> what did do you? >> i ran. >> did she get you? >> no.

>> he was one of the lucky ones. school officials say five other students were stuck with one or two of the needles, either by handling them or being poked. >> did the needles have anything in them? >> we don't know that. we do know the needle came from a child's home. >> what officials do not know is how the child got ahold of the needles and what they were used for, and that has parents deeply concerned. >> it would be a drug needle, it could be h.i.v. you know, hepatitis c on it, anything. the kids could, you know, it is just really dangerous. >> the school district spokesman said the five children stuck were sent to the hospital to be checked out. >> how are the kids doing? >> four of the five kids returned to school today that is great news. >> the school sent letters out today to the parents alerting them about the incident which took place yesterday morning. some parents are outraged they were not notified immediately after it happened. >> why did you not notify no parents and shut the school down? that's a serious situation. because that needle could have h.i.v., anything on it.

>> philadelphia police are investigating how the second grader got ahold of the hypodermic needle. so far no one has been arrested or charged with anything. live here at school district headquarters, dann cuellar channel 6 akdz. -- "action news." >> thank you. the firefighters have the upper hand on a four-alarm blaze that ripped through a camden county repair shop, fire at performance plus. arriving at the business on haddonfield road finding the flames shooting through the roof. it took 70 firefighters two hours to get things under control. nobody was hurt, but this was several vehicles inside the building. the war of words between philadelphia mayor michael nutter and donald trump escalated today. trump posted a tweet calling nutter a "low-life" and that he should be ashamed for using what trump called a disgusting word referring to him yesterday and

that nutter is doing a terrible job as mayor. and nutter says trump should apologize, but not to him. >> he really needs to focus on apologizing to the muslim community and people of faith. demonstrate some level of understanding. >> this all began yesterday when nutter assembled muslim leaders to call out trump and his proposal to ban muslims from entering the u.s. nutter says banning muslims is both illegal and ridiculous. against the back drop of anti-muslim and anti-immigration sentiment the u.s. received new citizens tonight with open arms. what do they think about what's going on? he, like his two accomplices, blew himself up. it turns out his mother received a text from isis telling her that her son died as a martyr. and she called the police and a d.n.a. sample confirmed one of the attackers was indeed her son. federal investigators say the couple behind the shooting last week in california was radicalized before they even started dating. they say that syed farook and tashfeen malik discussed jihad and martordom as early as 2013. and they stay they recovered images of possible targets from the couple's phones and computers. a dramatic day in a colorado courtroom. the man accused of killing three people at a planned parenthood clinic two weeks ago with several courtroom outbursts and suddenly admitted his guilt. and monica malpass with the latest on all of this. >> 57-year-old robert dear was

were imprisoned on other charges trying to get a deal. jones won't be getting out of jail any time soon, serving life behind bars for killing his alleged accomplice in the zabel killing. a man wanted for murder at a mantua grocery store in a florida courtroom today. as we told you last night at 11:00, 28-year-old reed arrested near jacksonville. the police tried to pull him over when he lost control and crashed into the police officers. he also had a baby in the car. nobody was hurt. he waived extradition and will be brought back to philadelphia in a few days to face charges for the november 10 murder of maurice mcdonald. and members of the fire department gathered to remember joyce craig. and they lit candles where she served. she died fighting a fire in a home. she was the first women

firefighter in philadelphia to die in the line of duty. the pennsylvania state police identified the couple killed in last night's crash in bucks county. saying jane and ian mcneil died when an s.u.v. crossed the center line crashing head-on into their vehicle. and it was at 7:00 last night. the friends of the mcneil's say the couple was very involved at the wildflower preserve and other organizations. the jerry sandusky scandal led to penn state agreeing to endow a $48 million fund to combat child sex abuse. today the first round of penn state grants awarded to 44 entities. $3.4 million for child advocacy centers, improve child therapyists and service in underserved areas. and bringing the service to camden, the carmaker breaking

out. after deadly shootings, police shootings and police misconduct. speaking before the council he apologized for the shooting death of laquan mcdonald. >> we need a painful but honest reckoning of what went on. not just in this one incident but over decades. >> and emanuel said he was sorry such a shooting occurred on his watch. officer jason van dyke facing first-degree murder charges in mcdonald's death. and cross-examining an officer charged with manslaughter in the death of freddy gray. william porter called to the stand today by his attorneys to testify in his own defense. porter denies that gray was hurt when he checked on him in the back of a police van. prosecutors say that porter was criminally negligent for not buckli buckling gray in a seatbelt.
