tv   Action News Weekend 7PM  ABC  December 26, 2015 7:00pm-7:31pm EST

7:00 pm
we're going to try to win this thing. >> danny: you have to get thech thedown first. >> rece: that is true. i will say this, as poor as indiana has been over the course of the season, though better at times today against the run, it's a reasonable position to take. but first thing's first. see if the blue devils can get it in the end zone for the touchdown. wils wilson's in motion. sirk going to run it. he's into the end zone! and the blue devils are within one. so, what will cutcliffe do? and the kicker is running out there. david didn't think about it for a second. he's going to tie it up. 41-40. well, we need 41s on the board everywhere. 41 seconds left. indiana's got 41. and now so does duke.
7:01 pm
and the final game of nate sudfeld's career, as the indiana quarterback, and he has a chance to lead a most memorable drive. but it was thomas sirk. >> danny: watch the adjustment. linebackers bump over. there's only one linebacker left to pick up. once they bump out of the box. and they pick him up easily. that's the easy walk-in touchdown right there. >> joey: that's a mistake. there was no reason to puck bum. and someone should have, whoever your leader is on your defense, should have been able to stop a guy and say, we're still fine even know they went in motion. >> danny: that's an easy read for sirk, too. as soon as he saw that motion, he's thinking, i got this. >> rece: i hate to even bring this up but -- >> danny: you'll do it anyway. >> rece: duke had the squibb kick against miami, which certainly should have been ruled down, but you won't have a
7:02 pm
lateral play with 40-something seconds, but all indiana needs is a field goal, so, you would think that if martin can get it into the end zone, he would. kicks it as far as he can and catch it at the 5. ricky brookins. and brook kun ins is wrestled dt the 22. >> danny: before the half, indiana drove the length of the field, they had about 20 more seconds before the half, but they showed, they're more than capable of moving the ball that type of distance and getting this in field goal range. with two time-outs, no less. >> rece: we have him, as you see there, with the 45-yarder. he did hit a 58-yard field goal last year as a redshirt freshman, did griffin oakes, so, he's got plenty of leg if indiana can move the ball and give him a chance. devine redding. devine redding trying to get it
7:03 pm
all back in one fell sweep. and he's close to the 40. iu with two time-outs. >> joey: that's one of those plays, you say, why are they running it? until he breaks it. >> rece: indiana's got a couple of time-outs. sudfeld's working towards the sidelines. and he has his man out there in jones, and he get s out of bounds. another first down for the hoosiers, and they really just need one more sizable gain to at least give griffin oakes a chance to win it for indiana. >> joey: that's too easy. you can't give up that completion on the sideline. make him catch it in the middle of the field, even though they have time-outs. >> rece: 18 seconds to go. sudfel sudfeld. he needs to get out of bounds or throw it away. now, ten seconds left, and he'll have to be expeditious here, because they are -- this would be probably -- wilson's going to
7:04 pm
call a time-out to make sure everybody's on the same page. right now, they need to pick up a few more yards to have a realistic shot at a field goal. >> joey: only three receivers in that situation. you're in two minute mode and you only send three receivers and there's seven, eight guys in coverage. that's a tough time and place to find a completion. and you can see sudfeld couldn't find one. >> rece: okay, for griffin oakes, to feel comfortable, they really need an eight-yard pickup. so, you wonder how -- >> joey: ten seconds. >> rece: ten seconds. you have a time-out to work with. you wonder how duke is going to play that. are they going to try to take away that gain? you can't give up a cheap one behind you. >> joey: does nobody play two-man under anymore? >> danny: we haven't seen it is. >> joey: that is the perfect coverage. two-man under. man-to-man across the board and two deep guys. just don't let the receiver cross your face. they're too soft. they only need eight yards.
7:05 pm
>> rece: they have two deep safeties here. both standing at about the 27. but now, duke will call another time-out. so, what is the thing that you've seen from indiana right now that you expect that could work enough to get them a realistic shot at a field goal here? what -- >> joey: sudfeld is really good at throwing the slant route. he's really good at throwing the timing route over the middle of the field. you have time. you have a time-out. i'm taking a simple -- especially if duke plays the way they just deployed, with their defenders, six, seven yards away from the receiver, i'm going to run a slant, take my chances. >> rece: and the receiver has to know, he catches it, get down. >> joey: absolutely. >> danny: paige in the slot has been one of his guys. >> joey: i don't understand this coverage.
7:06 pm
look at this. look at the distance that paige has right now. >> rece: duke is blitzing. he's throwing the back shoulder fade to cobbs and, so, now, five seconds left, likely out of field goal range. instead, you're going to be throwing the hail mary, i would guess. you have a perplexed look on your face. >> joey: i'm truly baffled. you look to your left and paige has eight yards of cushion. simply give him the football short and let him see if he can get eight yards and kick a field goal. >> rece: now kevin wilson is going to use his final time-out. figure out what the hoosiers are going to do. although, figure to be pretty obvious here. going to throw it to the end zone. i can't imagine you would do anything more exotic than that with five seconds to go. >> danny: he just wants to talk to the guys, make sure the offensive line is solid with protection, what receivers are going to go, which one's going
7:07 pm
to jump, which one is going to be the deflector. all those things you can go through in this scenario. >> rece: nate sudfeld has played a ton of football, no strip sack giveup, you know, fumble return. no, actually -- >> joey: i think the kicker is on the field. >> rece: how about that? griffin oakes is on the field. let's check in quickly with paul carcaterra. >> paul: good news for indiana and oakes, the wind, dead. the flakes ba flags are barely . he's kicked a career high 58. this one over 60. buckle up. >> rece: griffin oakes is going to try from midfield to go 60 yards for the win. and now duke calls a time-out right before. you know, a lot of times -- >> joey: i got my return guy back there. i don't know if i'm calling a time-out. i like my chances here if i'm duke of him not getting it there. >> rece: and remember, they' they've -- they've returned a
7:08 pm
kickoff for a touchdown today, shaun wilson did, though i think that was devon edwards back this time and he's returned six of them in his career for a touchdown. so, in this crazy season of weird endings, is the stage set for a winning field goal for indiana, perhaps an opportunity for a kick six for the blue devils? oh, they -- >> danny: going back. >> joey: call another time-out. >> rece: everybody is out of time-outs now. >> danny: thank goodness. >> rece: kevin wilson changes his mind. the hail mary is coming. no, they're going to try to get him a few more yards. >> danny: that's a great play. >> rece: decided to give oakes a few more yards to try the field goal. so, instead of from 60, now, let's see where the line of
7:09 pm
scrimmage is and where this will be. the line of scrimmage is just across the 39, so, now, it's right in the range of what his career long is, he had the 58 yarder, as a redshirt freshman last year. and the holder is putting it down at the 46. making it a 56-yard attempt for the game. duke does have a return man in the end zone. on the way and it is no good. and we will have a little free football in yankee stadium. extra innings, if you will. oakes gave it a ride. not sure the laces were in the proper position for oakes to have his best chance. overtime football when you come one orange bowl without oran uh, that's a clementine. this isn't a baby orange? nope.
7:10 pm
what about this? tangerine... well at least i got a good deal on these really big oranges. grapefruit! see, now you're just messin' with me. this looks nothing like a grape. two different fruits, my brother. you do know pineapples don't look like apples, right? looks like an orange to me.
7:11 pm
7:12 pm
>> rece: let me show you what happened on that potential game-winning field goal. the holder is erich toth. and the idea is to get the laces out, get the laces out and he -- oh, no. didn't get the laces out. now, my spotter is mike black, former terrific kicker for boise state. and he says the immediate thing when you're a kicker and you are stepping forward and you see the laces, you're like -- why? what? he got a little more colorful with his language, but this is a family show. >> danny: as a holder, you have to spin them. you can do that. you get the laces, you can spin it with that other hand. you have to take care of those kickers.
7:13 pm
>> rece: you were a holder. >> danny: i was. i held a wide right and i held a national championship. they were always laces out. >> rece: for those of you, most of you have been with us throughout the season. if you are not real familiar with college football overtime rules, a little different from the nfl. indiana won the toss and defer s deferr deferred, so, duke gets it first, like the top of an inning. duncan on the ground. start from the 25, get in through the first two overtimes, you can kick the extra point. if you score. once we reach the third overtime, everyone is required to go for a two-point conversion. indiana will have the ball next. blue devils get the first crack at it. second down and eight. thomas sirk. running it and sirk going to be a couple of yards or so short of the first down and sirk is slow to get up and he's been close to
7:14 pm
get up a few times in the game and now the duke training staff is coming out to atent to him as you see thomas clutching his left knee. >> danny: he has taken a pounding all night. really showed some incredible toughness throughout this game. >> rece: well, we certainly hope for the best for thomas sirk. there is the backup quarterback, parker boehme. he does have extensive playing experience this year. he did start against pittsburgh when sirk was hurt. and has been playing some during most of the games later in the season. we anticipate, in fact, asked the duke staff, if we would see boehme. we expected to. this is not the situation we hoped or anticipated seeing him. and you see sirk obviously in absolute agony after being
7:15 pm
twisted and taking that hit and david cutcliffe out to check on his quarterback. >> danny: that did not look good. >> rece: really tough injury and certainly hoping for the best and we know that thomas is getting excellent attention out on the field. hard-nosed, tough-minded kid. played a tough game today.
7:16 pm
>> rece: thomas sirk put some weight on his leg, went to the bench. we're in score time and parker boehme, first snap of the game and the pass is batted high in the air. not intercepted. so, it's fourth down and three and duke will come out with the field goal unit and ross martin, to take the lead. you have a look at circumstance talking to the trainers on the sideline. duke has some experience in overtime games this year. one, a four-overtime affair
7:17 pm
against virginia tech earlier this year. martin, the senior kicker, a perfect 2 for 2. from 36. ross martin right through the heart of the plate. just about where home plate is at yankee stadium. and duke takes a 44-41 lead. and now, kevin wilson's hoosiers with a chance to win it with a touchdown. >> danny: this is the advantage of going second in here. worst case scenario, you have a field goal to tie it. if you are the offense, you're thinking, hey, we can end this game with a touchdown. >> rece: a lot of times, you see teams try to take the shot on the first play of overtime. would you do that here? >> joey: i would not. i don't like it. i was just thinking, i would hand the ball to redding a few times. get him going first. try to shorten the distance i need to the sticks. that thing, you take a shot early, if it's incomplete, then you run it on second and ten, we
7:18 pm
talked about earlier, i hate that thought process by an offensive coordinator. r >> rece: sudfeld to paige. he was able to get a couple. >> danny: that's the best of both words. you have a deeper route called. you trust your quarterback to take it. if not, you check it down, still in a positive situation. >> rece: touchdown wins it for the hoosiers. second down and eight after a pickup of two. sudfeld. paige on the end around. paige looking for room. duke has it defensed very well. ben humphreys there wearing number 59 today and -- in honor of tell by brown who would have been a six-year player, injured in the preseason, wanted to wear the number of his fellow linebacker.
7:19 pm
and there's another blue devil hurt at the 25, it is the linebacker, dwayne norman. norman holding his midsection. as the duke training staff attends to him. paige was stopped at the 21. he's about six yards short of the first down, as dwayne makes his way to his feet. he'll make his way back across to the duke sideline. third down coming here, blue devils hoping to force indiana into a field goal to try to force the game into a second overtime. sudfeld leads his team out.
7:20 pm
thrown for more than 7,700 yards, nearly 7,800 in his career. needs a few more here to go out on top, his final game at the indiana quarterback. sudfeld getting heat and he just gets rid of it at the end -- was there a receiver in the area? it's an incomplete pass. >> joey: how is that not you grounding? >> rece: i didn't see a receiver in the area -- the officials are saying that sudfeld threw it with his left hand just to get rid of it. number 24 was in the area -- i didn't see mike in that shot. >> danny: he's in the stadium. >> rece: okay, so, griffin oakes now with a field goal attempt to try to extend this game. push it to a second overtime. he makes it, we go to overtime. miss, the blue devils win it.
7:21 pm
from 38. on the way -- and it is no good! and the drought is over for duke. duke wins a bowl game for the first time since 1961 if -- if it stands up. now, instant replay can look at a field goal as long as it's not above the upright. oakes is contending that he made the field goal. oakes is incredulous. he thinks it's good. there's a massive celebration going on with duke. have a look, guys, see what you think. >> danny: it went too high, right?
7:22 pm
yeah, it went too high. confiden >> rece: as i told you, it is reviewable, if the ball goes -- you can rule whether it was inside or outside the upright as long as it wasn't above the upright. that kick was above the upright. not reviewable. the officials have left the field and indiana comes up three points short and duke ones it, 44-41. it was a crazy one and paul carcaterra has caught up with david cutcliffe. >> paul: crazy one indeed, rece. coach, all the lead changes, describe the e motional roller coaster of this game. >> well, when you top it off, it's been since 1961 that duke won a bowl game, i mean, it's amazing. i cannot tell you the emotions that -- i'm watching our guys, i'm almost speechless. >> paul: coach, you made it to three straight bowl games. and in the fourth quarter, the game's got away from you. how did you close this one out?
7:23 pm
>> you know, it's our seniors. they never, never, never quit believing. a lot of courage, it wasn't all perfect. it wasn't all pretty, but you know what it is? one big, fat w. >> paul: coach, look over there. what's going through your mind right now? >> i'm loving our seniors. could not be prouder, paul, and i think a lot of people got entertained with a lot of good football. also have to say, i'm pretty amazed at indiana and the job they've done and the skill they have on offense and the way they can execute. pretty special. >> paul: thank you, coach. congratulations. >> thank you. >> rece: paul, david cutcliffe wins his final game of the season for the first time in his eight years at duke and he has that guy to thank in large part. our capital one player of the game, shaun wilson. 282 all purpose yards. a couple of touchdowns. wilson had the 98-yard kickoff
7:24 pm
return for a touchdown, also had an 85-yard touchdown run. he had the big plays and he is our capital one player of the game. >> joey: he had a great game. the home runs, the long runs, that was the difference for duke tonight. not just wilson, but the run by sirk. the special teams plays. wilson had a terrific game. >> danny: sirk is there, he's hurt, he gets to celebrate with his team tonight. >> rece: he played with a lot of passion and energy and resilience. toughness and the blue devils can dance for the first time in more than half a century. and for the first time ever, they've won eight of more games in three straight years. final score, duke, 44, indiana, 41. you can catch the trophy ceremony, presented by capital one, on espn3. so long from yankee stadium in new york. and now, back to the studio. >> all right, rece, thank you. john saunders alongside of mark may, and, well, mark may, strangely enough, this never happens. you have a very strong opinion
7:25 pm
about what just happened there. >> just that one shot an that look where the ball is going through the uprights underneath the goal post, it looks like it's inside the goal post. i don't know. take another look. it looks luke, well, it could be close, it would be over, because if it's over, doesn't matter. but i want to see this camera angle from underneath the goal post. because it if it is unnortheast -- look at this. to me -- i don't know. that looks like that's on the inside. >> it definitely looks like, from that angle, that ball snuck in. >> but if you are -- >> the reason they wouldn't review it -- >> it didn't go over. >> in the ball is ruled to have been too high, then they cannot review it to see whether or not it was inside or not, which seems to be sort of a strange interpretation of the rules, but you would think that, you just want to get it right. >> right. well, from that angle, underneath the goal post, looking it, it looks like it's on the inside. but they didn't call it good.
7:26 pm
but all those people out there that complain that there are too many bowl games, they're not complaining anymore, are you? you got what you wanted here. a lot of scoring, a lot of offense, a lot of excitement. overtime football game. i think this is why you watch the bowl games. this is why you want more bowl games. look at david cutcliffe. how happy this duke football team is. he's done a terrific job coaching duke, but this is his first bowl win. it's duke's first bowl win since the 1961 cotton bowl. and for david cutcliffe, he's taken duke to new heights. three years in a row, but he finally got his first bowl win. >> you see the excitement of the kids, as well. and you can bet, back at the campus, all the kids at duke are doing a dance and people at indiana are a little bit upset. trophy presentation is about to happen. so, it really is a great moment for them. it's like winning a national championship on this given day. now, frank beamer, we know, is one of the all-time great coaches in all of college football. this will be his final game ever as head coach at virginia tech.
7:27 pm
greg stroeman takes this back and goes 67 yards. this is the type of game, this one has been for frank beamer. looks like he's celebrating like the game's over. this is far from over, the way the offense has been playing. >> virginia tech has been amazing, putting up 45 points in the first half. but the key is, they did it with beamer ball, also. that punt return, that actually puts a stamp on this for frank beamer. for his team to score on special teams, that's very special for him, if they can win this game. >> that's one of the things we'll remember about frank beamer is beamer ball and his great special teams. but boy, what he's meant, not just to the community at virginia tech, especially when they went through the tragedy, the gun shooting on campus, but just what a leader he has been to that entire xun ty community. >> class all the way. >> we will miss you, frank. though, i have a feeling he'll still be around college football -- >> selection committee. >> there's plenty of college football continuing all evening, this afternoon, and tonight on
