weather down south. people in texas are waking up to death and destruction. 8 people were killed when tornados swept through the dallas area in the latest round of wicked weather. five people died in car accidents, three others confirmed dead in collin county. the twister caused widespread destruction and one was caught on camera. one woman home with her kids at the time said she heard a noise that she has never heard before. >> she keeps screaming at me, like, mom, are you okay. i scream at them, that's all right, all this glass, all this glass before, all the glass was yelling crack crack crack all over the place. >> severe weather has been sweeping across the south since wednesday. more than 2 dozen people have been killed. >> now to california where

firefighters are getting the upper hand on the wildfire burning across the pacific coast scenic highway. the fire that charred 1200 acres is 60% contained. more than 400 firefighters are on the ground fighting the blaze. 50 homes were evacuated as the blaze raged nearby. residents say they are thankful to the firefighters who got them out in thyme. >> if they -- in time. if they didn't wake us up, we would have slept through it and burnt to death. >> the evacuation order has been lifted and the 50-mile stretch of the pacific coast highway that was closed is back open. officials believe high winds downed a power line on private property sparking the blaze on friday. >> eagles fans looking for a post christmas miracle are out of luck. the birds are eliminated from playoff contention for the

thought we would pull it out and make it to the playoffs. >> the redskins and former eagles desean jackson hold the nfc title. eagles play next week against the giants. we'll have more coming up later in sports. >> sphforts -- firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in burlington county, it break out at 5:30 in mount laurel. you can see the heavy smoke pouring off the home. at this hour it is not clear what started the fire. we are told that the house was vacant. neighbors say there were issues with squatters. gas crews shut off the gas in the area. no injuries were reported. an out-of-control driver smashed into a porch of a row home in camden and tried to take off. it happened along the 1400 morocco of south 9th street around 1:00 a.m. you can see the gaping hole left in the front stoop.

a resident tells "action news" she heard a screech and came run downstairs and that's when she witnessed the female driver of the suffer take off. >> sthefs trying to -- she was trying to getaway i had an old tv sitting in front of my house and she ran it over and it got stuck under my car, she only made it two blocks. >> the driver got out of her car and ran to her home a few blocks away. her family called 911 she was taken to cooper university hospital with injuries. police caught up with her there, charges are pending. five people live in the damaged home, none injured in the crash. one person is dead after a car and tractor-trailer collide in montgomery. this was the scene before 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of easton and county line roads in horsham township. crews had to free two people from the car. one died at the scene. the other is in the hospital in serious condition. at this point it is not clear what caused the crash. >> new, philadelphia police are

trying to figure out if two shootings in the city's overbrook section are connected. the first one happened after 11:00 p.m. on the 6700 block of lebanon avenue. police say a 24-year-old man was shot in the arm. he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. less than an hour later gunfire erupted on the 6700 block of lead street, police found a 15-year-old boy shot multiple times. he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. no arrests be have been made in either case. police are working to see if the shootings are related. >> crowds of people are hitting in the malls this weekend in search of the post christmas shopping deals. trish hartman spoke with the bargain hunters. >> reporter: for these sisters this is their christmas. >> my daughters didn't want anything until after christmas. >> reporter: customers flock to stores at the cherry hill mall

we're looking at another record breaker. >> reporter: three of the last four days record highs. this time of year it's weird to see temperatures in the in the 6 and once this lifts we could hit 68, 69 degrees. looking live at penns landing there. 53 degrees is the present temperature reading which is 11 degrees above the normal high. dewpoint, 51. wind out of the south/southwest at 9 miles per hour. the wind is the key not only dealing with temperatures, but getting rid of the fog. it starts to mix the rats up a little bit, the fog will lift. dense fog remains in effect for areas shaded in gray.

dallas area. >> huge tornado! >> reporter: leaving at least 8 dead and injuring 50 others in collin and dallas county forces officials to declare a local disaster. >> i hear something, something is on fire. >> reporter: the national weather service sending out a tweet at 6:56 telling people to get to short in -- shelter in te area. tornado warnings and sirens sounding off through the city that is large and extremely dangerous twisters leveled entire neighborhoods flipping cars and crumbling this church. the church's pa tore -- pastor said it happened so fast he couldn't escape. the building collapsed on top of him. another enormous twister ripping through red oak texas taking down power lines and causing a

series of explosions. dozens of gas leaks and fires springing up in the wake of the wreckage leaving 50,000 people without power immediately following the storm. the violent storm visible from the air as love field airport was forced to avert flights and evacuate terminals. >> we have to wait for the storm to pass. >> reporter: that evacuation order lifted saturday night, officials allowing flights back in the area after 9:00 p.m. >> that was abc's philip menna reporting. a woman was accidently shot by chicago police. it started when officers were called out to a domestic disturbance involving a 19-year-old college student. responding officers were confronted by a combative subject. he was killed. jones who lives downstairs was a mother of five and hosting

family for christmas n in the statement the department extended the deepest condolences to her family and friends. chicago mayor said anytime an officer uses force the public deserves answer, we all grieve anytime there's a loss of life. the shooting comes in the wake of a another deadly police shooting that sparked protests. bergen county officials say counselors will be available to help students copy with the murder of a an 8-year-old student. michael stasko killed his wife and daughter before killing himself. investigators say the shootings may have occurred earlier this week while the victims were sleeping. a motive has not been determined. philadelphia police are investigating a double shooting that left a teenager in critical condition. it happened just after 8:30 on the 100 block of east clear field street in kensington. an 18-year-old man was hit

multiple times. he is in the hospital fighting for his life. the other victim is in stable condition. no arrests have been made. a teenager was killed in anther shooting in west philadelphia. the boy ms. mid teens was shot in the chest and back yesterday. it happened on the 800 block of north 341st street. he died at the hospital. fire officials in delaware are trying to figure out what caused a fire that destroyed a home in kirkwood. the charred remains are all that is left of the home on the 1900 block of old kirkwood road. firefighters arrived on the scene to the house fully engulfed in flames. nobody was inside at the time. the coast guard was called into action to rescue a ship that ran aground in the delaware river. the 622-foot vessel got stuck on the way into the terminal in morrisville, bucks county. it was transporting scrap metal. it took 9 hours, but crews did get it free. >> we are learning about a

series of airstrikes against isis targets that happened on christmas day. the pentagon said it was part of operation inherent resolve. 7 airstrikes hitting tunnels, manufacturing sites and bridges and fighting outposts all u.s. aircraft returned safely. authorities appear more certain that a mosque in houston was deliberately set. they said the fire was started in several locations indicating that an accelerant was used. the mosque does not have a kitchen or electronic equipment that could cause a fire. investigators are looking at video cameras from the shopping center for suspects. nobody was hurt in the blaze. police call it a bad case of hording now the gloucester county animal shelter is looking for homes for 100 cats. nora muchanic has the story. >> reporter: they have the

sweetest faces no names and no homes. almost 140 cats rescued from a house in pit mannor last week brawght -- in pitman last week. >> we have room for 140, we had 290 when we brought in the cats. >> reporter: the shelter is focused on trying to find homes for all the cats in their care. >> our goal is 100% placement. >> reporter: that's the gloucester county animal control chief. the shelter is so crowded they are being kept in dog cageses. >> cageses -- cages. they are seeing that the hands that are reaching for them are not harming them. >> reporter: the shelter is offering reduced rates if you adopt a cat from the pitman hording house you can get it for $25. that if you can hold on to them.

saw nearly a foot of snow. blizzard conditions in western texas. if you want snow and cold, you have to go down to texas to find it. it was a fun game to watch. i watched a couple of quarters of that game before i turned it off. double scan live, we don't have any snow in the forecast. we have colder changes by week's end. that will make it feel more like it should for this time of the year. 69 degrees that's the high temperature we're shooting for today. it will not feel like winter this afternoon. the low temperature, 50 degrees, that's where we bottomed out this morning. big issue out there, .3 for reading an allentown. 1.3 in trenton. .8 in philadelphia. 55 in millville, closing in on 60 in dover. wilmington, 53. cooler to the northwest, even for you folks in the lehigh valley and the poconos. that's well above the seasonal averages for you guys. a ton of clouds out there right now. clearing taking place across the

>> a louisiana police officer crashed his car on christmas eve and investigators know is to blame. the officer was being attacked by an owl at the time of the crash. the attack was captured on the body camera. the owl flew into the open window and hit the officer in the face and started to peck the back of his head. >> i tried to keep control of the car and went into a ditch and trees, finally stopped the car and put it in park and got out and the owl was chilling out in the car. >> it took 45 minutes to coax the owl you have the cruiser. the officer is okay and got a tetanus shot and is on antibiotics. 2015 is coming to a close and that means it's time to look back at the most popular baby names. year. charlotte amelia, ava, and cora.

over the place. >> severe weather has been sweeping across the south since wednesday, more than two dozen people have been killed. >> and now to california where firefighters are getting the upper hand on a wildfire burning along the scenic pacific coast highway. flames can be scene near the stretch of highway and the hills in ventura county. the fire which charred 1200 acres is 60% contained. 400 firefighters are fighting the blaze. 50 homes in the solamar beach community were evacuated. residents say they are thankful for the firefighters who got them out in time. >> this they didn't wake us up to escort us out, we would have burnt to death. >> reporter: the evacuation order has been lifted the 50-mile stretch of the pacific coast highway is back open. officials believe high winds downside power lines on private

property and that sparked the blaze on friday. >> firefighters are on the scene of a burning home in mount laurel on 100 block of canterbury road. it is not clear who started the fire. we are told the house was vacant. nation tell "action news" there has been issues with squatters. gas crews shut off the gas in the area. no injuries have been reported. new, police say an out-of-control driver smashed into the porch of a row home in camden and tried to take off. it happened along the 1400 block of south 9th street at 1:00 a.m. you can see the gaping hole left in the front stoop. a resident said she heard a screech and came running downstairs that's what she witnessed the driver of the suv take off. >> she was trying to getaway, i had an old tv sitting in front of the house, she ran it over and it got stuck under the car so she only made it two blocks. >> the driver got out of the car and ran to her home a few

blocks away. the family called 911 she was taken to cooper university hospital with the injuries. police caught up with her there, charges are spending. five people live in the damaged home, but nobody was injured in the crash. one person is dead after a car and tractor-trailer collide in montgomery county. this was the scene before 2:30 near the intersection of easton and county line roads, crews had to free two people from the car. one died at the scene, the other was taken to the hospital in serious condition. at this point it is not clear what caused the crash. philadelphia police are trying to figure out if two shootings in the city's overbrook section are connected. the first one happened on the 6700 block of lebanon avenue. the 24-year-old man was shot in the arm. he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. an hour later gunfire erupted on leads street, police found a 15-year-old shot multiple times,

he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. no arrests have been made in either case. two good samaritans are out of the hospital they were hit by a car after trying to help a disabled motorist on christmas night. it accident happened in lehigh county. 29-year-old of trenton was killed. she got out of her car to get help when an suv struck her. two people who pulled over were hurt by the vehicle. no word if any charges will be filed. from our delaware newsroom, police say an illegal turn led to a collision involving a fire truck at lancaster and avenue and rodney street in wilmington. the fire truck was returning from a call when it hit by an suv making an illegal turn. nobody was hurt. >> landmark bridge is closing for repairs in the new year. we'll take a look at what this will mean for commuters.
