above normal despite we think it is cold out there. 43 he in philadelphia, 44 wilmington, 43 he in millville, even lower 40's up in the lehigh valley. up there temperatures in the poconos below freezing where they're going to have some sleet and icing issues overnight because we are tracking a big storm across much of the country. the center of the low near saint louis. this like all the storms is going to cut across the great lakes and surge warmth our way through much of this storm but at the onset especially to the north there will be some mixing issues and you can see chicago right now some sleet, freezing rain before it changes to some snow there as well. winter weather advisories go he into effect at 7:00 p.m. for berks county the lehigh valley up into the poconos. for our immediate area south of the lehigh tunnel it will be a brief mix of sleet before it quickly changes to rain by tomorrow morning's rush hour and in fact, we're dealing with a very warm ground even in the lehigh valley. the last time it was below freezing in allentown was december 21st, so the ground

surfaces are very warm, so we're only expecting maybe a coating of sleet on the grass at most in that advisory area. so, what to expect here in that advisory zone between 7:00 p.m. and 4 a.m.? some light sleet. same time for the rest of us it's just light rain. between 4 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., sleet changing to rain in the lehigh valley. a steady rain here and between 7 o'clock and 10 o'clock no matter where you are it is a soaking heavy rain. we'll let you know how much to expect and when it pushes out brian coming up in that full accuweather forecast. >> all right adam thank you. team coverage continues with "action news" reporter chad pradelli live in south whitehall where the penndot trucks are getting ready for any winter weather to come our way. they had to knock the rust off first i imagine, chad. >> reporter: yeah, you bet, brian. here in the last 10 minutes we've seen some of the penndot trucks loading up with salt. they'll be on the roadways tonight getting ready in case any of that sleet falls here in the lehigh valley. it's been a really easy winter for penndot but for ski resorts, it's been a difficult

one and they need some below freezing temperatures. on bear creek mountain the chair lifts are parked the lobby quiet and the grounds bear. the report is calling this winter one of the worst for skiing. >> it was a week like christmas to new year's we lost this year there's no way to kind of recover from that financially for the company but, you know, we just continue to make efforts to reinforce the other business segments we have. >> reporter: public relations director jeff says the 06-07 and 2011-12 seasons are comparable but by this time they had attempted to make snow. the resorter needs 72 hours to make snow and get the slopes opened. >> looks like there's starting to be some seasonal temperatures towards the end of the week. we're hoping around new year's we could fire up the snow guns. if there's an opportunity before that we'll take it. >> reporter: anthony and maria young booked a getaway months ago for their family. they planned to stay two nights but instead stayed just one. while they he won't be skiing the family is still having a good time.

>> it was warmer yesterday. we said the heck with it and we had a great time no matter what. >> we he did ping-pong, the the hot tubs, we did the pool. so, we had a great time. >> reporter: also shut down i spoke to an employee he there. he tells me he that they hope to get the snow machines up and firing sometime this weekend. i'm live in south white hall, chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> chad thank you. 80 million americans could be affected by a winter storm making its way across the country. so far weather has been blamed for 43 deaths across seven states in the past week. in missouri, heavy rains caused rivers to overflow producing flash flooding. and in texas, cleanup is under way after a string of tornadoes touched down outside of dallas. we'll go live to the dallas area for an update on recovery efforts coming up at 5:00.

>> ♪ >> we've got some developing news this afternoon. in just the last 30 minutes philadelphia d.a. seth williams announced he wants the state superior court examine the case against monsignor william lynn. lynn first stood trial in 2012 over his handling of sexual abuse cases in the delaware valley. since then his initial conviction has been overturned and reinstated several times. it was overturned once again last week. when a judicial panel award edolina new trial. williams says he now plans to take lynn's case before superior court seek a lasting verdict. >> from our new jersey news room this afternoon this is what's left of a holiday toy that topped christmas lists across the country, this after it caught fire inside an ocean county home. now state and federal officials are using that family's story as a word of warning to all hoverboard owners. nora muchanic has the story. >> reporter: this is the smart balance wheel hoverboard that burst into flames sunday evening while charging inside a house in lacy township ocean

county. it belongs to 11-year-old craig whale len. >> i was just like 2 feet away from it and all i see is it burst and it was just in flames and i got really scared. >> i started to see some sparks and i yelled and he ran -- he was running in the room and we just heard a loud bang and pieces new like a bomb. it just went up in flames. >> reporter: before the fire department arrived one of whelan's three children emptied an entire fire extinguisher putting out the blaze which scorched the rug left burn marks on the kitchen floor and left a coating of residue over the living room. >> all i can say is i thank god that he wasn't on it because the way it exploded he, i can't imagine what would happen. >> reporter: the damage from this hoverboard was minimal but officials are worried about more serious fires and recommend you charge these outside of the home if possible. >> obviously that's the only way they're going to work but certainly do not charge them inside the house until somebody knows what the problem is and they can rectify that problem.

>> reporter: kim whelan bought the hoverboard from amazon.com which has pulled sales of many models. hoverboards have caused 16 fires in 12 states because of malfunctioning batteries and plugs and fire officials expect that with the thousands purchased for christmas that number will increase. >> this is only two days old. and it blew up. and i don't mean just caught on fire, it exploded. >> the consumer products safety commission is investigating this incident. it will retrieve the charred hoverboard from the fire marshal. meanwhile the whelan family is grateful no one was injured. >> if he was on top of that it would have been like a land mine. >> reporter: in lacy township, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> a grand jury has ruled that two cleveland police officers will not face charges in the killing of 12-year-old tamir rice. rookie patrolman timothy layman fired at that child while responding to a call about a man waving a gun. tamir was holding a pellet gun at the time. an ohio prosecutor said newly enhanced video shows tamir was

removing that toy from his waist lanhiswaist band when he . he called it a perfect storm human error because the officers did not know the gun was harmless. the justice department will continue its own independent review of that killing. chicago mayor rahm emanuel cut short a planned vacation in response to the fallout of a deadly double shooting in the hands of police. quintonio legrier was shot and killed when i lease mao he is were responding to a domestic disturbance. 55-year-old bettie jones was accidentally hit by gunfire during that incident. emanuel says the city has been referred to the independent police review board. >> a highly anticipated transformation began today in south philadelphia. >> one, two, three. later part of the evening hours and mainly after midnight for this precipitation to turn a little more on the steady side. as we look at the numbers right now, it's above freezing, well above freezing in the lehigh valley, 41 in allentown, from unin reading, 43 he in philadelphia as well as millville and mid 40's at the shore so those numbers thankfully no matter where we are are out of the 30's at this point. but double scan live radar will slow this storm is really starting to ramp up. it's been dealing with severe weather with tornadoes in the deep south, dealing with ice and snow through much of the great lakes and the northern plains and you can see that cold front near nashville. all this has to slide to the north and east and there will be some cold air far to the north and west at the onset of this storm. so, winter weather advisories go he into effect first time this year. 7:00 p.m. through 7:00 a.m. berks county lehigh valley to the poconos. the main threat would be some sleet brief at first and then it will change to rain by tomorrow morning's rush hour. so, at 8 o'clock tonight,

again a few spitting showers of rain and that blue is the sleet. as we speed up time by 9:30 tonight you see some of that sleet falling in the lehigh valley. rain elsewhere across much of the area through about midnight tonight, heavy rain developing philadelphia to the south. still some sleet to the north. and by 4 o'clock in the morning, we start to in inthat sleeflipthat sleet to rain. rain to philadelphia south and east and for the morning rush at 7:30 heavy rain everywhere so ponding on the roads will be the major concern for tomorrow morning's rush hour and by about lunchtime or thereafter the rain is off the coast and we start to even dry it out to the north and west. so in the advisory area in the lehigh valley, the low tonight is just going to be 34 so lows are not going to dip below freezing in allentown so maybe a little sleet on the grass. the icing issues would be up in the poconos. in fact you take a look at throws overnight lows, 34 allentown, 35 philadelphia, 40 philadelphia, 41 in millville as that rain arrives and again, that sleet mix is very brief for a few hours to the

he reportedly caught them in the middle of a theft. "action news" reporter gray haul live in elkins park this afternoon with the very latest on this investigation of a violent crime, gray. >> reporter: indeed it was, brian. it was a typical sunday night, that is, until the car owner peaked out the window and noticed someone trying to steal his car tire. he jumped into action. >> that's real bold, okay. that's very bold. >> reporter: neighbors are reacting after police say these two were on more than just a late night drive in the elkins park community sunday night. officers say they were strolling the linwood apartment complex looking to steal tires. >> the reason that they were stealing the tires from the vehicle was turns out that they have the same. their tire went flat and they were stealing the vehicle from the tire to put onto their vehicle. >> reporter: about 11:20 sunday police say 44-year-old search joe gullo and 37-year-old emi oka targeted a car in the 2000 block of

mathers way. before they could get away they were spotted and confronted by the car owner. >> the suspect then assaulted the victim about the headway brick and a wrench. >> reporter: ironically the police station is just blocks away and officers constantly patrol the area. people living in the apartment complex say it was a bold crime. >> who wants to do anything if you know the police are going to be here in 15 minutes. >> i'm not worried. i been here over 30 years. >> reporter: despite being injured the victim was able to remove a t-shirt covering the suspect's car tag and provide police with enough information to track down the would be tire thieves. >> we were able to secure them and get them positively identified by the victim and arrest them. >> reporter: and we're told that victim probably needed some stitches but was treated and released from the hospital. those suspects they were arrested less than 30 minutes away in ambler. tonight they are facing several charges including aggravated assault and also theft. live tonight in elkins park, gray hall, channel6 "action news."

alicia. >> gray, thank you. trenton police say that they have a woman in custody this afternoon facing multiple charges for stabbing four people last night. investigators say it all happened during a fight over money. the action cam was on the 400 block of west hanover street as police were still on the scene. 31-year-old la shonda felton is facing three counts of aggravated assault. one victim refused treatment but the other three were taken to the hospital and then released. philadelphia police are trying to identify two gunmen who stormed into a kensington grocery store and forced the people inside to the ground at gun point. take a look at this brand new surveillance video from inside the el gayu market on the 100 block of east tioga street. detectives say the duo busted inside the store on december 23rd, they took a cell phone and cash from the victims and then took off. if you know anything about this crime, you're asked to call police. >> meanwhile police also trying to track down the pair of thieves who struck in west

kensington. this is surveillance video showing the men as they broke into the print fresh on the 1600 block of north hancock street. it happened back on december 15th. after getting in through that second story window, they rum matched around awhile leaving with just one dell laptop computer. east detectives would like a phone call if you recognize the suspects. police have identified the man who died during a car accident in montgomery county early yesterday morning. a tractor-trailer and a gray hyundai collided at the intersection of route 611 and county line road in horsham. 25-year-old eric detwiler from quakertown was killed. police are trying to determine if drugs or alcohol might have played role. both drivers gave blood samples as part of the investigation. >> delaware meth officials notice an alarming trend this year. they say overdose deaths from a synthetic pain killer have

to head into manayunk or bala cynwyd you can see the dv mostly blocking the ramp but track has been squeezing by on the right shoulder. westbound are bigger delays. a half hour to get from the vine to the blue route, about double what it would be with no delay. still have delays on the schuylkill coming out of king of prussia. speeds like just 13 miles per hour because of the earlier police activity by gulf mills. that has cleared now, though, so both eastbound lanes are opened headed toward the blue route. in tredyffrin watching a crash along swedesford road at valley forge road. two accidents earlier this afternoon in north coventry along route 100. there's still one out there at neiman road to avoid. earlier overturn vehicle crash on the new jersey turnpike southbound in gloucester county. crash is gone. damage is done. speeds in the teens from exit four, route 73 down to approaching exit two for 322. you could use southbound 295 instead but steadiest speeds there are just in the teens as well so i would think local,

>> ♪ly. >> meteorologist adam joseph joining us. we have some actual winter weather coming this way tonight. >> yeah, the lehigh valley mainly is a concern for some sleet overnight. the rest of us pouring rain and even in the lehigh valley by the morning rush tomorrow, a soaking heavy rain even there. s were's a we take a look double scan live radar there's a few sprinkles here and there. overall we're not going really see this precipitation enhance or ramp up until between about 9:00 and 10 o'clock tonight and especially after midnight that's when the heaviest rain will arrive. we are all in the low and the mid 40's at this point. the only place that is below freezing is in the poconos with your temperature at 31 degrees. but this is a beast of a storm. you can see he that spin working towards chicago.

once again low is cutting across the great lakes. the warm air will surge with this storm. before that warm air filters in we have some cold air that is bumping into it, high pressure from eastern canada wedging in some of that very dense low lying cold air. overnight rain arrives. brief mix farther north, lehigh valley into the poconos but even in allentown, lows are not expected to drop below freezing over tonight. staying at 34. 40 degrees for philadelphia. in fact the lehigh valley, the ground is very warm right now despite your seeing sleet temperatures haven't been below freezing up in this area since before december 21st. so, at 7 o'clock tonight that winter weather advisory goes into effect. it also includes all of berks county and reading as well as you into the poconos. again, sleet majority, then changing to rain. if you want any freezing rain, no one wants it but ill will be confined north of the lehigh tunnel especially in the poconos. at 10 o'clock tonight rain for the majority of it.

there's that blue with some that sleet right on the brink of the lehigh valley. by 1 o'clock in the morning it's flipping to rain in reading, still sleet in allentown, heavy rain beginning to develop across much of the area. 4 o'clock in the morning a soaking here, wilmington, dover to trenton, even the lehigh valley starting to change to rain and by the morning rush rain even as far north as the poconos, heavy at times. 10 o'clock still heavy rain, so popping on the roads will be a major concern. that afternoon rain exits and maybe a little peek of sun here and there. take a look at the rainfall amounts. even the poconos picking up over a half inch of rain, same for the lehigh valley right around an inch for philadelphia down to the south a couple areas could see over that inch mark. and then the warmth is on here tomorrow afternoon. 62 philadelphia, near 70 tomorrow in dover and millville, lehigh valley the only place staying in the 40's tomorrow afternoon and it will be on the breezy side. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 62 in the city
