wrapped up a a news conference up there, trish? >> reporter: that is right, walter just within the past half an hour we have learned that the body of five-year old jayliel vega was found in the lehigh canal. he was found a quarter mile from where he went missing in 8 feet of water. officials held a news conference here at the south and aubrey streets to make that announcement a few moments ago. >> preliminarily this is considered a tragic extent. however, there will be a full investigation, by the allentown police department criminal investigations division in conjunction with the the lehigh county coroner's office. an autopsy is scheduled for monday at 8:00 a.m. >> reporter: now tragic news caps off a day of tran particular searching. police say it was a community member who made a big discovery leading officials to the boy's body. volunteer thurmond clark

plucked a white tablet in the red case from the lehigh canal around 2:45 handing off to other search hours called police. clark's sister if law said they had been searching in canal park for a few minutes,. >> we looked in the water and saw a tablet. we didn't know if it was his. we saw a red case. >> reporter: tablet patches description of the one belonging to the the missing five year-old autistic boy last seen 11:00 p.m. new years eve running from the relative's home barefoot and without a coat. volunteer george keller retrieved the tablet. >> after me pushing it, i went in and grabbed it. he grabbed it, handed it the to me and we brought it up and called 911. >> reporter: once it was town police and emergency vehicles quickly arrived on the scene. dive team spent hours in the frigid canal waters as family members tearfully watched, and waited. coroner's clapped and cheered for thurmond clark after he left after talking to investigators thankful for a break in the case. it doesens gathered near the canal and stayed there for hours waiting for news. >> it was just heart breaking.

historic flooding on the mississippi river has missouri's governor asking for federal help. he wants army core of engineers to come help with flood debris removal in and around st. louis. officials are keeping a close eye on the illinois river which is expected to remain well above flood stage, the next three days. flooding began with heavy rain last weekend and now being blamed for at least 24 deaths across that region. lawmakers are making their way back to washington d.c. and first order of business for house republicans will be to repeal the health care law. vote however will be largely symbolic, president obama will veto that legislation which would cut funding for planned parenthood. republicans say the move will show voters the important choices they are facing in the upcoming presidential elections. and eight week old kitten likely ravaged by a dog and
