you can find highlights from today's events including the moment kenney was sworn into office. >> big day for the city. >> huge. >> time for a check of the accuweather forecast and it finally feels like winter out there. >> 2016 getting off to a chilly but sunny start. meteorologist adam joseph standing by outside. not bad, adam. >> not bad but when you're in the shade and with that wind it is pretty brutal especially this is a feeling we haven't felt this entire winter season so far as we look at the numbers, they are below freezing for air temperatures across pretty much the entire viewing area. 20's to the north and west. 30 philadelphia. 31 in millville as well as atlantic city. and just 11 in the poconos but you factor in the wind and it feels like 17 degrees right now here on city avenue, nine in allentown, seven below in the poconos, 21 in millville and teens even for parts of the shore. as we look at storm tracker6 live double scan we have some snow showers in southern new england and you notice all the snow showers across west virginia, virginia and north carolina but for us we miss

those flurries and we just got the sunshine. so as we look at these cold temperatures overnight tonight with our low of 15 in philadelphia, the last time it was this cold was nearly 10 months ago on march seventh when we were 11 degrees in 2015. as we head out tomorrow morning to the bus stop, air temperatures in the teens but get the hats the gloves and winter coats. wind chills will be between five below and five above but this cold snap is not going to last long sharrie. we'll let you know about a warmup and precipitation by the end of the week in the full accuweather forecast. >> teens we haven't heard that in a long while. there are of course those who love the cold weather while others are wishing for those unseasonable december temperatures to come back around. but one group that definitely is enjoying these conditions the ski resorts in the poconos who finally have a chance to make snow. walter perez he's continuing our team coverage here on what's happening with the weather. he's live at blue mountain. hey, walter. >> reporter: hey, sharrie.

you know, over the past two years the ski resorts across this region many of them set records for how early they opened but here we are in the beginning of january and the snow guns are running around the clock here at blue mountain. hopefully they'll open for the first time this season later this week. they lost a lot of time and a lot of mon to the war money to m weather. if you want to ski or snowboard today then jack frost is pretty much your only option in our region. jack frost and big boulder are the first resorts to open up this season albeit on a limited basis. >> the last couple of days we've been pounding snow out. we have seven trails opened today. we're spinning five lifts and i have three more to push off so by wednesday i'll be at 50 percent opened. >> reporter: as you can see seven trails is enough to attract the crowds. many of these snow lovers are college kids trying to get in as much mountain time as possible before going back to

school. >> it's definitely been something i've been trying to do all winter break but only we could do it finally i'm so pumped we got a last week we can t to itly i want to squeeze it in. >> it's been great. the snow even though it's not man-made -- or it is man-made it's still a great advertisement the rails are great. >> reporter: at other resorts they're taking advantage of every moment that old man winter gives them. officials here at blue mountain say they're hoping to open for the season this thursday. >> it is a later start. it's not completely unusual. we have seen this before. butter, you know, coming out of the season last year where we had our earliest opening ever it is an unusually late start. >> reporter: the most resorts we spoke with did say they hope and expect to open over the next seven days or so but they say that missing all of december and the christmas break cost them millions. they're now hoping for a prolonged cold snap to lead them through into the february holidays and an early easter

conflict began saturday when saudia arabia executed a shiite muslim cleric who was convicted of terrorism. the move was harshly criticized by iran which is dominated by shiite muslims. the protests prompted saudia arabia to sever diplomatic ties with iran. the u.s. and others have urged both sides to find a solution. the fbi and local law enforcement continue to monitor a very tricky situation in oregon where a remote national wildlife refuge has become the scene of an armed occupation. the group of ranchers and antigovernment militia men some of whom are openly armed set up a roadblock to that federal building and they're even manning a guard tower. their claim. this land doesn't belong to the federal government but the people. the protest started on saturday at a rally in support of two ranchers who are headed to prison today to serve a five year sentence. dwight and steven hammond father and son are convicted

of arson on federal land. ammon bundy has been leading this armed occupation. >> we have tried and tried and tried a prudent method to get government to at least look at this and say, hey, there's something wrong here. >> luckily no one was in the wildlife refuge when it was seized and so far no reports any injuries. the hammonds say they do not support what's going on and they do plan to go to prison peacefully. in the meantime the militia members say they are prepared to defend themselves and to stay out there at that federal building as long as necessary years even. it is not clear what, if any, action law enforcement will take but for now schools in that area were closed as a precaution. brian. >> very much developing story there. alicia, thank you. president obama is defending his plan to tighten gun restrictions without going through congress. following a meeting with attorney general loretta lynch and fbi director james comey today the president said the

steps he's taking fall within his legal authority done not under mine constitutional rights. he's not announced the specifics. he's expected to expand background checks on gun say. republicans have already voiced their opposition. >> to business now, here's a look at today's closing numbers and today is the first day of trading in the new year of 2016. as you can see a very rough start to the year. the dow at one point was down more than 400 points. it ends on the day 276 points down. the nasdaq down more than 100 and the s & p 500 down 31 points. general motors is committing half a billion dollars to the ride sharing company lyft. as part of the deal, gm's president will now be a board member at lyft. the companies will set up short-term car rental hubs across america. people who don't own cars can pick one up at those hubs, then work as a lyft driver. a long term goal of the partnership is for gm to develop self driving cars that

[laughter] >> let's check in with meteorologist adam joseph. yes, this is cold. you disagree. >> no, no, no he says a little bit of a biting wind. it's a harsh wind out there, yes. especially that we have not felt it in close to 10 months with temperatures that are going to dip this low overnight tonight and tomorrow morning but at least we have that brilliant sunshine out there. sky6 live showing that camera bouncing around with that arctic air that is funneling in from the north and you can see those numbers to the north syracuse is just seven, burlington, vermont, 3 degrees, 30 philadelphia, 23 in pittsburgh. so the numbers are cold everywhere in the midatlantic and the northeast. the 24 hour change compared to this time yesterday we're running 16 degrees colder in philadelphia, 18 degrees colder in wilmington, the same for dover and right along the shore close to 20 degrees colder than it was at 4 o'clock on sunday afternoon.

then you factor in the wind. it feels like nine in allentown, 11 in reading, 16 in wilmington, 17 philadelphia and 20's down to the south and these numbers will really tumble as we go into the overnight hours. but we were the lucky ones. notice all of the sunshine here new york city to philadelphia. towards boston they dealt with some snow showers and some flurries. also to the south and west pittsburgh to charleston dealing with some of the snow showers there. so, we were kind of wedged in between some of the precipitation with this front. so, for tonight brisk and cold, wind chills between five below and five above with air temperatures at 15 in philadelphia, 12 in millville, seven in the lehigh valley, eight in reading and as we look at future tracker wind chills as we get into tuesday morning, six in philadelphia, seven in wilmington, six in reading, eight below in the poconos and even in southern new jersey you're not going to be spared from the single numbers. it will feel between three and 4 degrees. then in the afternoon much like this afternoon, wind chills area wide at 3 o'clock

on tuesday 29 allentown, 24 philadelphia, 20 in dover and low 20's in southern new jersey. as we look at how it feels in the summertime we talk about that oppressive humidity. this go round with that arctic bone dry air, dewpoints are below 10 degrees so that's when you start to get the chapter lips and you start to get those cracking skin, you know, on your hands and that kind of stuff and you get itchy so definitely lather on some of that moisturizer. as we look at the four day at 4:00 sunny but frigid. 31 degrees for tuesday. the good thing is this doesn't last all that long. wednesday not as cold with temperatures at 40 degrees and the sunshine. much milder on thursday just a few high clouds at 46 degrees and then it clouds over on friday with temperatures well above normal into the upper 40's so it doesn't last long but we do have an interesting weekend with respect to precipitation. we'll let you know what it means coming up in the seven day in the next half hour. >> all right. >> it's got our attention. >> could that mean snow? he's

one person died, two others were hurt because of last night's violence on the 100 block of west wyche smart street. police say the plan was 58 years old. a teenager meanwhile was shot in the face. he's in critical condition. police say a third man in his 20's was wearing body armor at the time but he was shot in the back of the head and is also in critical condition. police still don't know how all this started. >> newly elected officials took their oaths of office today in montgomery county. the keswick theater in glenside hosted this morning's inauguration event. josh shapiro officially began another term as commissioner along with val area curb joseph veil filled a seat vacated by bruce castor. all the other recently elected county officials were sworn in today. governor tom wolf made two stops in our area as part of

seeing a doctor could be dangerous. >> but we begin with a new jersey couple now facing charges for a night of gambling at a bucks county casino. their alleged crime will nothing to do with what went on inside parx casino. they left their kids in the parking lot. chad pradelli outside the casino this afternoon with the very latest on this. chad. >> reporter: yeah, brian, we've seen this before, sometimes it's in the summer when temperatures are sweltering. this time it was saturday night when temperatures were below freezing. and the actions of these parents have police and others wondering what were these parents thinking. jared nelson and ebony walker won't be winning the parents of the year award for 2016 after police say they left their three children ages one, three and eight alone in a car saturday night as they gambled

inside parx casino. temperatures were in the low 30's. >> they were there for about an hour and a half through video and through other leads we were automobile to track down the parents and took them into custody. >> reporter: police were notified after a casino patron alerted security. the kids were evaluated at a local hospital and released to their grandparents. nelson and walker were sent to jail and charged with recklessly endangering another person. >> the case will be turned over to children and youth authorities in newark, new jersey, since that's where the parents are originally from. >> reporter: bensalem director of public safety fred hair ran says his department has seen fewer cases of parents leaving children unattended at the casino in recent years. he credits parx for increasing security and cracking down on irresponsible parents. >> just two more dopes that, you know, were not thinking. anybody can reproduce, not too many can be parents.

>> reporter: and police tell me the children were in good condition and unharmed. i'm live in bensalem, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, thank you. turning now to new details about the death of a plan on a bensalem road this morning. when the victim was originally found lying near the intersection of street and knights roads just before noon, police believed he had been hit by a car but after reviewing surveillance video from a nearby home, investigators determined the man actually fell into the road. police say it's not yet clear if the fall killed him or if he had a prior medical condition. his name has not yet been released and investigators are asking anyone with any additional information on the man's death to contact them. police in mansfield burlington county are investigating the death of a senior citizen from over the weekend as a homicide. investigators say 68-year-old james dewyer was found shot to death in the passenger side of his silver dodge avenger

[laughter] i mean, in any standard in any winter you would say okay this is really cold, this is some frigid air but this go round it seems even more harsh because it's something we haven't felt. >> in awhile. >> yeah. as we take a look at some of the cameras around the region in center city you can see that glow on the horizon, lots of sun today. 30 degrees right now but that dewpoint is at two so we have extremely dry air with those winds out of the west-northwest at 22 making it feel like it's only 17 degrees and the snow guns are back on. many of these cameras when we looked at them on friday there was a green ground, there was green grass. now it's 25 at bear creek,

right through d.c. and new york city. as we look at the forecast for tonight, it's brisk its cold. seven to 15 degrees, wind chills dropping below zero in the suburbs. with those wind chills tomorrow morning heading what tock work and school it will feel like six in allentown, five in wilmington, two in wildwood so definitely many layers needed as we head the kids out early tomorrow morning and then even in the afternoon still need the winter gear as those wind chills will remain in the 20's and below the freezing point even colder in southern new jersey than it will feel up in the lehigh valley. high pressure in control for tuesday with that beast of a high it stays cold at 31 degrees with a north wind six to 12. then that high slips to the east winds return more out of the southwest and with sunshine it will feel much better come wednesday with your high of 40. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 31 tomorrow, sunny but frigid. we keep the sunshine boost those temperatures up wednesday to 40.
