saved his life. >> the injured officer jesse hartnett is a five year veteran of the force. officials say he has a long road to recovery but they are amazed and incredibly thankful that he survived such a brutal attack. friday night, the big story on "action news" is the latest on the ambush of philadelphia officer hartnett. >> police say the suspect edward archer admitted to the shooting and said he was acting in the name of islam. >> we just showed you the pictures that of shooting but we want you to know "action news" has obtained video of the shooting but we are choosing not to air it because it is graphic and police commissioner ross has says it could inflame the situation. >> all right, we have team coverage tonight. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live near the scene of the shooting in west philadelphia. but let's begin with vernon odom who is live tonight at police headquarters. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, rick and monica. the word is amazing. that is how police commissioner richard ross describes officer hartnett's survival of this late night

ambush in west philadelphia. the surveillance footage from 60th and spruce last night raises the question, how did this cop survive. you see the gunman identified as edward archer charging the patrol car and opening fire. eventually getting his hands all the way inside the vehicle. officer jesse hartnett was hit three times in the left arm but managed to get out of the car and wound his assailant in the buttocks as he fled. here's officer hartnett's first radio transmission. >> i've been shot. i'm bleeding heavily. >> valuians and his courage and bravery he exits his police vehicle, starts chase despite being seriously injured, returns fire. he's able to strike the male at some point in time and again, his fellow officers were able to apprehend the man. >> reporter: the suspect was eventually captured near 60th and dell lance knee. when he got to police headquarters police say he quickly gave a limited confession. >> he stated that he pledges his allegiance to islamic state.

he follows allah and that is the reason he was called upon to do this. >> reporter: the gun that was used to shoot officer hartnett seen here is a stolen 9-millimeter handgun. police issue. stolen in october of 2013. >> we know it was stolen. how many hands it may have passed through in the last couple years i have no way of knowing and he did not -- he did not talk about that. >> reporter: rick, archer now faces multiple charges including the attempted murder of a police officer. officer hartnett will require many months of therapy. his injuries are very serious. live at police headquarters in center city, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, vernon thank you. meanwhile the fbi and agents from the u.s. department of homeland security joined philadelphia police today in execution of search warrants at two philadelphia area homes associated with archer. one of them was just blocks from where the shooting took place. and that's where we find "action news" reporter john rawlins with there part of the -

that part of the story tonight. john. >> reporter: hi, rick. the house behind me has a strong connection to the suspect. it is about a four or five minute walk to the shooting scene at 60th and spruce. >> the way he shot though close up on him that cop should be dead but he wasn't bogued good all the advertisement we have seen the disturbing surveillance stills. tamika jones witnessed that ambush firsthand standing in the window of a nearby carryout. she said she had no inkling what was to come as a gunman rushed towards the officer's car. she could not believe it. >> he went straight up to the cop car and went boom, boom, boom. that's why everybody was scared is. people that was standing outside was -- people ran out the bar. we hit the floor. we was crying. >> reporter: jones told us though he doesn't live in west philadelphia suspect edward archer was a familiar face in this area saying he often spent time at a relative's home. neighbors along nearby delancey street told us police arrested the 30-year-old suspect in the middle of their

block. shrapnel mason said she was awakened by a commotion outside her front door. >> what i actually heard was, you know, the cop telling the guy get the f down, get the f down so i'm like what is the commotion so i go to the window and i'm looking and i actually see them apprehending him. >> reporter: archer was picked up halfway between the shooting scene at 60th and spruce and this house at 61st and pine. 11 heavily armed swat officers entered the house this afternoon with a member of the bomb squad. it's believed the house belongs to the archer family. neighbors said he often spent time here visiting a relative who had recently moved away. it's believed the suspect still had a key to the house which is being renovated. those who know the suspect said yes, he is a practicing muslim but dispute reports he pledged himself to isis. the fbi searched the house for several hours and removed at least four boxes and a bag. well the law enforcement

stayed here about two hours and then departed. they're looking for anything that might give them a better picture of the suspect and what motivated him. live in west philadelphia, john rawlins, channel6 "action news. >> thank you john. as you heard john say police say that the suspect edward archer told them he pledged allegiance to the islamic state group but during today's press conference mayor jim kenney says islamic teachings have nothing to do with the shooting. >> this is a criminal with a stolen gun who tried to kill one of our officers. has nothing to do with being a muslim or following the islamic faith. >> we should be very careful not to let the actions of lone wolf individuals besmirch and spoil the content of a whole community. >> that was the executive director of the philadelphia chapter of the council on american-islamic relations. he went on to add and thank commission eros and mayor kenney for their comments today.

to come to terms with a deadly fire. officials say elizabeth perez and her two-year-old son nathaniel both died when they were overcome by smoke in an upstairs bedroom. perez was nine months pregnant and had run back into the burning house to rescue her toddler. her family says she died a hero. >> she's in a better place now with my nephew. she died like everyone say being a hero rescuing her child as any mother should. >> the fire broke out about 4 o'clock this morning in the 2800 block of north fourth street. firefighters do not think it had any working smoke detectors insides. they're still trying to find an exact cause but add that there were at least five portable heaters being used in the home. >> turning now to the forecast we have a dreary weekend ahead. it's going to start with fog and drizzle sunday then looks to be a soaker. meteorologist melissa magee at the "action news" big board with details for us from accuweather. hi, melissa. >> hi monica. tonight we're tracking a little bit of moisture heading our way. this is the warm front we are

during a traffic stop there this morning. the officer was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. commissioner william evans says the 27-year-old suspect was on probation after being released from prison in april and was driving on a suspended license. the suspect initially ran from the scene but police caught up with him and arrested him. >> septa police are now using body cameras during their daily patrols. they started wearing them january 1st following a six month testing and pilot program. septa police chief thomas nestel told today showed how the cameras worked and some sample incidents they've captured so far. >> listen for the scream. and that person right there snatched a phone on the train. >> nestel said body cameras will ensure officers are professional and guarantee that the rights of septa riders are recognized but they will also protect officers

and reached into the driver's side window. officer hartnett was hit three times in the left arm but managed to grab his service pistol and fire back. >> despite being seriously injured hartnett exited his patrol car and chased the male. he returned fire and was able to strike male who was later apprehended by other officers. >> officer hartnett was rushed to penn presbyterian hospital and put into surgery. mayor kenney commended his actions and those of responding units. >> our officers every single day are willing to do what officer hartnett has done, to put themselves between us and the bad guys. >> investigators say the weapon used to shoot officer hartnett was actually stolen from a philadelphia police officer's home back in 2013. amper haarcher has confessed and detectives he pledged his allegiance to the islamic

state. >> crews moved in with their guns drawn. it's not clear what if anything they found pertaining to the shooting. >> suspect edward archer no stranger to law enforcement in philadelphia and delaware delawe counties. "action news" obtained his arrest record today. archer has previously faced charges of aggravated assault conspiracy making terroristic threats and reckless endangerment in philadelphia county. in delaware county archer was awaiting sentencing for fraud involving a car. "action news" reporter wendy saltzman will have more on archer's criminal past at 6:00. >> as soon as officer hartnett issued that call for backup that you heard all available units in the area responded to the scene and one shared his experience ons line. philadelphia officer johnny cass stow posted this tribute to officer hartnett's incredible presence of mind. "without hesitation you fought your attacker almost instantly. you drew your service weapon and returned fire. it was literal al fight for

under those circumstances, man, i can't imagine that almost anything that you could have could protect you. that is chilling, absolutely chilling when you watch that. >> reporter: police are also disturbed many disturbed that the suspect had pledged allegiance and isis and ambushed hartnett in the name of islam because police defend arms contrary to the koran. people should be appalled. >> we have to enact to get stronger and stiffer laws to protect the citizens of the city. if they're doing this to police officers, you as a citizen, you should be in fear yourself every day even more so than we are. >> reporter: now, i'm being told officer hartnett suffered very serious injuries to his left arm and has a long road to recovery. we're live here at fop headquarters in northeast philadelphia, i'm dann cuellar, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, dann. governor tom wolf issued this statement about the police ambush today. he says "we are thankful that officer hartnett is alive and not facing life-threatening

story that we're following for you, the mexican drug lord known as el chapo who escaped prison six months ago is back behind bars tonight. el chapo also known as joaquin guzman was captured after a shootout by marines during a raid of a home that they had been tipped off about. five people were killed and a marine slightly wounded in the predawn attack in mexico but el chapo was taken alive and was not hurt. six other people were arrested. officials say the home was filled with an arsenal of weapons armored vehicles and even a grenade launcher. guzman escaped from a maximum security prison last july through a tunnel. and world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the capture of el chapo following "action news" at 6:00. >> back here in washington township, new jersey, a school district is trying a new way to keep students safe. armed security officers are roaming the law ways. it is a controversial idea but one there may trigger new legislation in the garden state. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has more.

>> reporter: a retired police officer with 25 years experience seen here during a stop at the elementary school in turnersville. after retiring in 2012 he's back on the beat now patrolling the halls of washington township's 11 school buildings as a special law enforcement officer. >> god for bid this school becomes victim of some of the tragedies we've seen over the years that we're going have a very quick and immediate response. >> reporter: the school district and the town are splitting the cost of two new special officers who are armed paid hourly and receive no benefits. they join patrolman tom a regular police officer who is assigned to the washington township high school. >> somebody who is here for the most horrible intentions i'm literally seconds and steps away. >> reporter: using retired police officers in schools like this became more common after the sandy hook elementary school shootings in 2012. >> these officers went to this school. they grew up here. this is meaningful so these kids relate. >> it could happen anywhere so just being able to know that

we have police here and security around at all times it helps make everyone feel secure. >> want to make sure everyone is safe. i check i was the doors. walk inside outside the perimeter. >> reporter: there's a bill considered in the legislature to create a new category of police officer in new jersey specifically for schools called a class three officer. 33 would be armed retired cops under 65 who would be limited to working on school grounds during the school day. >> it makes sense because there's a large pool of qualified retired police officers out there. >> reporter: what will happen to the proposal to create class three school officers is unclear. what is clear is that having experienced cops who know the town and people makes everyone feel a bit more secure. in washington township, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." >> two new jersey state troopers responded to a call this week that gave a family one story they'll tell a long time to come can. this was the scene on the shoulder of the garden state parkway near hillside township early monday morning. a man was driving his pregnant wife to the hospital. she was in labor when they

>> funeral services were held today for a five-year-old boy with autism who was found dead in a lehigh valley canal. jayliel vega's body was found in allentownly he had been missing for two days after wandering away from a relative's home on new year's eve. the coroner says the cause of death is pending but he was not hurt in any way before he died. investigators are calling the death a tragic accident. >> folks living in four different communities may be splitting a $2 million settlement over a stinky landfill. waste management has agreed to the deal which will end a lawsuit brought by residents nauseated by the smell coming from the company's landfill in tullytown bucks county. it still has to be approved by the u.s. district court. more than 9,000 households could be included in the payout. each one getting $83 after

washout though, right. >> yeah, i mean if you had to pick a day that was going to be worse over the other it's going to be sunday especially in the morning because we've got a good soaking rain. >> football all day. >> double scan radar you can see that it's dry right now. no issues with precipitation but as we go throughout the rest of tonight very late tonight wouldn't be surprised if we had some passing showers or some light drizzle that moves on in. we'll talk about it and what's going on. high today in philadelphia 45. right now we're coming in at 42. cooler north and west of town. allentown 39, 32 in the poconos. along the coast in sea isle city 44. the upper 40's in beach haven. here's satellite6 along with action radar. mostly cloudy across the region. this is the first system we're tracking the area of low pressure over the northern plains with the warm front that's moving across the midatlantic region. the bulk of this moisture cutting up to our north and west but with this wouldn't be surprised if we had a passing

shower or some drizzle around. we'll widen out the picture here. this is what we're tracking as we led into the weekend. this area of low pressure out across the west. what's going to happen as it traverses across the united states it's going to tap into some moisture coming in from the gulf of mexico and with that we've got our soaking on the way. future tracker six showing you allege:30 tonight it's mostly cloudy, a couple of light showers will be around. as we go through the day on saturday especially in the afternoon hours, it's mostly cloudy again a lib of mist and drizzle overhead. a temperature coming in of 51. we'll max out at 52 degrees tomorrow so nice and mild with that surge of warmer air moving on in. on sunday 2:30 in the morning we're tracking that moisture coming in from the southwest to northeast direction and here it is by 7:30 on sunday morning, we've got a good soaking on the way and it looks like this will continue as we get through 11:00 a.m. on sunday. so the majority of the warm front's moisture lifts off to our north and east as we get into the rest of the afternoon hours.

but then there is the secondary frontal boundary, a cold front that moves through as we get into sunday at about 4:00 p.m. so with that there could be a couple of showers that will be lingering as we go throughout the day. so something to keep in mind and what we are expecting especially on sunday between 3 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. we're dealing with that heavy rain. we could find anywhere from three-quarters of an inch to about an inch and a quarter, a rumble of thunder can't be ruled out, either as the moisture moves in especially with that southwesterly warm wind and shore gusts anywhere from 40 to 50 miles an hour. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast showing you it's mostly cloudy on saturday, isolated drizzle, high up to 52. on sunday, morning rain and then a high up to 63. it's going to be a warm afternoon in fact records in reach. we could tie a record of 63 set back in 1950. allentown trenton wilmington very close to records as we go throughout the day on sunday. check out the big dip and the big drop in temperatures by monday.

the actual assault. despite serious wounds, police officer jesse hartnett managed to exit the car and return fire at the gunman. then came this frantic radio call from the injured cop. >> i've been shot. bleeding heavily. >> it is extraordinary that officer hartnett survived the point blank assault but he did and his alleged attacker is now behind bars. it is friday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the attempted assassination of a philadelphia police officer on the streets of west philadelphia late last night. we need to tell you that we are honoring a request from police commissioner richard ross not to use moving surveillance video of the incident, video that we did obtain but ross is understandably trying to make sure that neighborhood passions are not inflamed.
