the actual assault. despite serious wounds, police officer jesse hartnett managed to exit the car and return fire at the gunman. then came this frantic radio call from the injured cop. >> i've been shot. bleeding heavily. >> it is extraordinary that officer hartnett survived the point blank assault but he did and his alleged attacker is now behind bars. it is friday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the attempted assassination of a philadelphia police officer on the streets of west philadelphia late last night. we need to tell you that we are honoring a request from police commissioner richard ross not to use moving surveillance video of the incident, video that we did obtain but ross is understandably trying to make sure that neighborhood passions are not inflamed. police commissioner set it straight. this could have been a police funeral today. >> reporter: indeed, jim. it is a miracle but a veteran police officer tonight explains what happened there this way. he says you see the gunman charging towards the van actually running firing wildly and that's why he missed at least 11 -- eight of his 11 shots that he was known to have fired because you can't keep the gun at the target that way. had he been walking up calmly and trained to do this, the results could have been tragically different. this surveillance video from 60th and spruce late last night shows just how close the officer came to death of you see the gunman identified as edward archer of yeadon charging the patrol car and opening fire eventually getting his hand inside the vehicle. police say he shot at least 11 times. officer jesse hartnett was hit three times in the left arm but managed to get out of the car and wound his assailant in the buttocks as he fled. here's officer hartnett's first radio transmission.

>> i've been shot. became bleeding heavily. >> three gun shot wounds to the left arm is all we have. absolutely amazing that that's all he sustained. i cannot explain how he escaped that. nothing short of miraculous and we're thankful tour that. >> reporter: archer was captured near 60th and delancey. when he got to police headquarters police say he quickly gave a limited confession. >> he stated that he pledges his allegiance to islamic state. he follows allah and that is the reason he was called upon to do this inch the gun that was allegedly used to shoot officer hartnett seen here is a stolen 9-millimeter handgun. police issue. stolen in october of 2013. >> the theft of the police officer's gun it was reported as was required and sometime things happen and someone was disciplined for it i will tell you honestly about there as is our protocol. >> reporter: officer hartnett went straightly to the hospital even as he was being rushed into the surgery his father had a chance to speak with him briefly.

"action news" reporter john rawlins is live outside the house tonight. john, what were police looking for? what did they find? >> reporter: hi, jim. they were looking for anything tied to the crime of course or that could give them a better sense of the suspect. what makes him tick in other words. we're told they did recover at least one item that might belong to mr. archer. we're just a short walk from the shooting scene. there we spoke with a young woman who said she was there last night. >> came straight on out to the

cop car and went boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. that's why everybody was scared. people that was standing outside was -- people ran out the bar. we hit the floor. >> reporter: tamika jones says she could not believe her eyes. she had been standing in the window of a takeout store when she saw a man in a white robe charging and rapidly firing a gun at a philadelphia police officer sitting behind the wheel of his car. >> he ambushed that cop for nothing. i don't know if he had mental health issue issues or what it s but something -- there's more to why he did that to that cop. 'cause that cop did not deserve it. >> reporter: jones told us though he doesn't live in west philadelphia, suspect edward archer was a familiar face in this area spending time here when he visited relatives. neighbors along delancey street told us police arrested archer in the middle of their block. chanel mason said she didn't hear gun shots but a commotion outside her home. >> what i actually heard was, you know, the cop saying to the guy get the f down, get the f down, get the f down so i'm like what is the

commotion. so when i go to the window i'm looking and i actually see them apprehending him. >> reporter: archer was picked up about halfway between the shooting scene at 60th and spruce and this house at 61st and pine. 11 swat officers using a battering ram entered the house along with a member of the bomb squad this afternoon. it's thought the house belongs to archer's family. neighbors say he often spent time here visiting a relative who has moved away. it's believed the suspect still has a key to the house. those who know the suspect say yes, he is a practicing muslim but reject reports he pledged himself to isis. the fbi searched house for several hours and removed at least four boxes and a bag. well, we're told apparently louse is under renovation at this point in time. agents search for about two hours today looking for anything tied to the crime or anything that might give them a better idea about the suspect. live in west philadelphia, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you john. once again, let's identify

the suspect as 30-year-old edward archer. police say he has confessed to the crime saying he did it "in the name of islam." archer lives with his mother on south maple avenue in yeadon, delaware county. needless to say that home was the subject of much scrutiny today by police investigators. "action news" reporter wendy saltzman is in front of the house tonight. wendy what have you been able to find out. >> reporter: detectives served a search warrant looking for any evidence that radical islam played a role in that brutal overnight attack of the police officer. they're looking for any clues in this case about his past and his motive. these photos show the moments 30-year-old edward archer carried out his attack against the police in a statement to detectives he says he was called to kill police by allah. >> according to him he believes that the police defend laws that are contrary to the teachings of the koran. >> reporter: but the question is was it

radicalization or just the act of a violent criminal who used a stolen police weapon to fire at officer jesse hartnett 13 times. >> i think he was savvy enough to stop just short of implicating himself in a conspiracy with anything even if one exists we don't know right now. >> reporter: his criminal history shows in 2013 archer was arrested by the philadelphia police for terroristic threats and gun charges. he pled guilty to carrying a firearm without a license and assault which carried a nine to 23 month sentence. archer was immediately paroled for time served. in a sentencing report he states he has never seen a doctor or been hospitalized for mental illness and that he was not under the influence of drugs and alcohol. law also arrested by the media police at the end of 2012 and was found guilty on six counts including forgery altering a document careless driving and driving on a suspended or revoked license. archer whose house was raided this afternoon was set to be sentenced for that crime this coming monday.

but criminal records prove no trail linking archer to terroristic teachings. neighbor says they were quiet. >> they were regular normal people that minded their business. >> reporter: this afternoon the small street with just 12 houses is roped off as officers execute add search warrant inside. >> you never suspect that this type of activity or individuals like this is living so close. >> reporter: law enforcement believe what 33 found unside this home as well as the seconds location in philadelphia will help them to determine if archer was communicating with isis or looking at propaganda online. he was just three days away from being sentenced for his crimes in tell wear county where he faced years of probation and possible confinement. live in yeadon weren't dee saltzman channel6 "action news." >> the local islamic communities was quick to condemn the confessed actions of edward archer as was the

others injured on june 5th, 2013. today two and a half years later demolition contractor griffin campbell was sentenced to spend between 15 and 30 years behind bars for involuntary manslaughter. prosecutors said that he cut corners and caused a wall to collapse onto a an salvation army store. benschop pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. today we learn the new date for bill cosby's next court appearance on a sex assault charge in montgomery county. a judge granted the defense request to postpone the preliminary hearing originally scheduled for january 14th. the new date is february 2nd at the main courthouse in norristown. prosecutors will argue that they have enough evidence to go to trial. a record setting powerball jackpot has climbed even higher tonight to

"action news" reporter gray hall has the story. >> in a better place. she died like everyone say being a hero. >> reporter: family members of elizabeth perez and her two-year-old son nathaniel are heartbroken. the mother and son died in an early morning house fire in the 2800 block of north fourth street. perez made it out but ran back insides to save her son. many in this north philadelphia neighborhood are calling the mom a hero.

>> i have five boys, so, yeah, i would go back. i would do what a mother should do, go back. >> reporter: the fire started around 4 a.m. sadly the mother's heroic efforts failed and crews found their bodies in an upstairs beds room. >> she ran 'cause that's her. she would not leave her boy like she ran back in and, you know, she can't make it out so she's like well i'm staying with my son and that's what she would document firefighters don't believe the home will any working smoke detectors. there is no word on what caused the fire but investigators say there were at least five portable heaters inside the home. six people were able to get out alive and the perez family now reflect on the lives of two-year-old nathaniel and his mother. and as you can see there is a growing memorial for the victims of this family no doubt that will grow throughout the night and the next coming days. the american red cross is now helping this family and not too long ago firefighters they were in this neighborhoods passing out free smoke detectors. in north philadelphia, gray hall, channel6 "action news."

>> there has been a shakeup at the top of the pennsylvania state police. seconds in command lieutenant colonel george bive there. s has been demoted and reassigned. he was the face of the massive pocono mountain search for accuse trooper killer eric frein. he has been sent to a flag being presented to the three-year-old daughter he left behind. air force staff sergeant peter taub was one of six troops killed in a suicide bombing on december 21st near bagram air base in afghanistan. fellow soldiers and veterans lined the streets outside saint john's evangelical church to pay tribute to taub. he was just 30 years old.

this is ahead of a warm front that will pass through overnight tonight to bring some spotty sprinkles and some light drizzle especially north and west of philadelphia. but the real big storm over the weekend will be on sunday morning when it will turn very nasty around here and then in the afternoon on sunday, that's when it turns exceptionally warm and records could fall. so, here's a look at future tracker rainfall totals as we get into sunday morning we could see over an inch of rain north and west of philadelphia including the poconos, all rain as we go through this weekend. just close to an inch for wilmington and philadelphia and about three-quarters of an inch also for the shore. on sunday afternoon as it dries a little bit we'll start to get some pops of sun as the main bulk of the rain pushes away so records are in reach for philadelphia which the old record is 63 set back in 1950, even allentown, wilmington, trenton and atlantic city where temperatures and records are in the low and mid 60's could fall tied or broken around here.

as we look at the numbers it's 38 so still chilly in the lehigh valley right now. mount pocono at freezing of 32. the rest of us and the majority of the area in the low 40's. up in the poconos because those temperatures are hovering close to freezing with some of that light drizzle and a few patchy showers that patches had pass through tonight there could be some possible slick spots with some sleet or periods of freezing rain between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. doesn't look like a big deal up there but if you're heading that way just be very cautious if you start to see some precipitation falling in the mountains. satellite and radar there's the front right here, the warm front. first low goes over chicago. sends the warm air our way. by the time that second low near dallas pushes to the north and west so we time it with future tracker at 11:30 tonight there's some of the showers especially north and west as the warm front pulls through. saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, overall it is a cloudy day an mild day with temperatures in the 40's and the 50's. some patchy drizzle in the poconos tomorrow and then 2:30 on sunday morning that's when

we start to see the bulk of the steady rain and it turns very heavy, windy even a thunderstorm. this is 7:00 a.m. on sunday morning. 50's and 60's and there we go into the low and mid 60's late sunday morning as the main area of rain passes to the north and as spotty showers in the afternoon with patches of sun as the cold front comes through and temperatures still in the 60's. so, what to expect here for sunday between 3 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. that's heaviest rain, three-quarters to around an inch and a quarter. a gusty thunderstorm and winds at shore could gust as high as 40 to 50 miles per hour. the seven-day forecast cloudy tomorrow isolated drizzle 52. heavy morning rain sunday, records possible in the afternoon of 63 and then we're winds whipped with a cold air funneling in behind the storm, 37. quick bump up on tuesday before an arctic front comes in wednesday, maybe a morning snow shower and then temperatures tumble the rest of the week well below normal highs in the 30's.
