the hiring process from a familiar face who served on the team's search committee. jeff skversky live now in the "action news" sports center. this is a really unique look behind the scenes today. >> reporter: guys no question about it. eagles owner jeffrey lurie and his team may have been the guys who actually interviewed and met with doug pederson face to face behind the scenes in kansas city but they also seeked the advice of former quarterback ron jaworski. pederson will be officially named the new head coach of the eagles as soon as the kansas city chiefs are eliminated from the playoffs. that could lap as early as tomorrow night. pederson has been the chief's offensive coordinator with the chiefs the last three seasons under andy reid. jaws is among the select few who had input on the hiring of pederson. he was also in on the interview process for some of the candidates. the now espn analyst has the eagles extensive binder with detailed information on all of the eagles potential candidates. jaws tells "action news" today

the eagles got this hire right and pederson will make an outstanding head coach. and they say he will wow this city and eagles fans. >> i wanted to be transparent before i make any comment on doug pederson the eagles coaching search that i did assist the eagles in the coaching search and they did a tremendous job. every potential head coaching possibility was vetted. this book, there are hundreds of coaches in this book and at the end of the day the philadelphia eagles have acquired an outstanding new head coach so that was the bottom line, not to get distracted, not to get off focus but find the best possible coach for the philadelphia eagles and the eagles did that. >> reporter: jaws adds the eagles decision to hire pederson was a hard decision because there were so many good candidates. it was challenging but in the end he believes they have the right guy. we'll have much more on this coming up at 5:30, 6:00 and of

"action news." guys. >> interesting insight there. looking forward to hearing more from jaws. thanks very much. mild but cloudy out there today and we are getting ready for the rain. >> meteorologist adam joseph live now at the big board with the first check of the accuweather forecast this friday. hi, adam. >> there's no stopping it guys. a good wall of rain moving up the eastern seaboard. low pressure situated on the georgia south carolina border and this is going to push just to our south and east and skirt our region, the center of the low but as you can see this is rain for everybody if you look all the way to the north and west, even to chicago, detroit, it is rain. there is no cold air whatsoever and these are the kinds of storms we wait for every winter, you get the moisture to the south sometimes linking with the cold from the north and you get a big snowstorm but this go round no cold air anywhere. 42 in binghamton, 45 in buffalo, 52 right now in philadelphia. even down to the south charleston west virginia at

43 degrees. so, tracking the rain, it arrives from the southeast to the north and west between about 5 o'clock tonight. that's far southern areas to 10 o'clock up towards the lehigh valley. the heaviest does occur while most of us are sleeping after the midnight hour. it will end between 3:00 and 6 o'clock in the morning from the south to the north and we have a cloudy start to saturday but then we'll see sunshine returning in the afternoon. a good area will see about a half inch to an inch of rain far to the north and west lehigh valley reading lancaster poconos about a quarter inch to a half inch of rain expected and then beyond that once this system departs what's waiting in the wings arctic air and this is going to funnel back down to the south and eventually move back in. we'll have the timing of when all this cold air arrives in that full accuweather forecast plus a little more time line with future tracker and the rain overnight sharrie in a little bit. >> we'll see you adam then. thanks. almost two dozen people are out of their homes today because of a massive fire that ripped through a block of row

homes in south jersey. the blaze was so large it even forced a nearby school to close for the day. john rawlins he is covering the story, he's live at the scene in burlington with the details on the people who are being affected, john. >> reporter: hi, sharrie. the 300 block of saint mary's street remains closed. until a few minute ago utility crews were still working to shut off utility service both gas and electric. when you take a look at the damage here, and you understand that all this happened when people were asleep that's when the fire broke out they think about 5:15 to 5:30 it seems amazing there were only three mine injury injuries reported. roof timbers estimated to be 100 years or older fueled the intense flames from a four house row of homes with no modern fire breaks the blaze spread quickly and did major damage. william johnson was asleep in unit 313.

>> i'm hearing loud screams and yellingly i took a look out my front window and i seen a young lady running outside. i seen flames growing. >> reporter: johnson grabbed his family and got out. the two alarm fire burned through about -- for about two hours. remarkably though 20 people were displaced and are being assisted by the red cross there were no serious injuries. given a roof collapse a structural engineer was called in. so far it's thought the structure a too and stable for investigators to go inside to search for the cause of the fire. >> the fire investigator will have to take a look once he can get inside the buildings are still unsafe so we're going to have to wait. >> reporter: in the chaos of the fire several pets went missing among them six-year-old roxy who was later discovered by a firefighter in the upstairs closet of stephanie mill's mother's long time home. >> they found her and she survived the whole thing through everything the fire, the smoke. >> reporter: stephanie says she sometimes stays at the house with her mom bonnie who was moving out her possessions today. miller's home sustained the least damage of the four. stephanie thankful for the

neighbor who alerted her mom. >> he came knocking on the door and my mom happened to fall asleep downstairs on the couch and was right by the door thank god and she just got out like she didn't have any -- she had her nightgown on you know and like i said the neighbors gave her clothes and shoes. >> reporter: so, what happens next? no official announcement at this point but there is talk of demolishing the two most damaged of the two structures. those will be the ones that were closest so where we are standing. as for the other two units, the hope is they may be repaired but as we say, nothing official a at this point. there's going to be a lot of investigation that's going to have to go on before they make any sort of decision live in burlington, john rawlins. >> police in hunting park looking for the driver who hit a man this morning then left him lying in the street. it happened around 3 a.m. this morning at the intersection of fifth street and hunting park avenue. police say the 45-year-old victim was found in the middle

of the road. authorities even say parts of the vehicle that struck him were still at the scene as well. he's said to be in critical condition. "action news" reporter trish hartman will have a live report with more on the investigation coming up tonight at 5 o'clock. family, friends and colleagues are mourning the loss of new jersey's first female supreme court justice. justice marie garibaldi passed away. she was 81 years old. she was appointed to the state's highest court in 1982 and served until 2000. current chief justice stuart rabner says she leaves behind "an army of admirers and stayed close with her 46 law clerks over the years. >> one of the winners of the historic powerball jackpot has just come forward. john and lisa robinson of tennessee claimed their prize today. they're the owners of one of the three winning tickets sold in america for that

$1.6 billion prize. meanwhile today we met a group of local winners who are splitting a somewhat smaller prize a mere million dollars. chad pradelli has the story from kennett square. >> reporter: wednesday night was a winning night for some employs here at union park honda in wilmington. they didn't win the billion dollars but they did win a million. the smiles were wide inside the service and parts department at union park honda after 18 employees got a piece of the $1 million lottery prize. >> i was flabbergasted. i didn't believe him. i said no way. he said yeah and i said really and then i did a little happy dance. >> reporter: ondance. >> one of my guys said did you get to it? i said i didn't know what you're talking about. >> reporter: the group put up 10 bucks each. here's a co-pilot winning ticket. they bought 90 tickets in all from three different states but the winning one came from kennett square. each person won a little more

news. there's no way to couch this. brutal day on wall street today. the dow off 391 points today closing below 16,000 at 159088. the nasdaq off 127 points. the s & p down 42. you can blame three things here. poor u.s. earnings reports plummeting cost of oil and a selloff of chinese stocks. analysts say there's some good news coming here though. monday being a day off a day to cool down, reflect and maybe we'll turn the tide on these numbers. in the meantime wal-mart is closing stores around the world including 154 of them in the united states as it tries to boost struggling sales. the company says all of the stores closing are poor performers including many that are within 10 miles of another wal-mart. none of the stores are in our region. the move affects 16,000 workers including 10,000 in america. wal-mart says it hopes to move most of that em t them to other. wal-mart says it's going ahead

with plans to open 300 new stores around the world over the next two years. chipotle is closing every single one of its locations but only for a few hours. the company says it will shut down awful its restaurants on february 8th to hold staff meetings about food safety. chipotle of course has been linked to several outbreaks of e. coli salmonella and norovirus over the past few months. that's left people sick across america and sent the company stock into a tail spin. some customers have filed lawsuits against chipotle. >> the attorney general's office in some michigan says it will investigate the water crisis in flint. the town switched its water supply in 2014 to save money and it became couldn't tam naderd with too much lead with local officials declaring a public health emergency in october but it wasn't until last week that governor rick snyder declared a state of emergency. in addition to the state attorney general the u.s. attorney's office is also looking into the situation.

two u.s. military helicopters collided today off the coast of la had a. it's stilhawaii. rescuers have been searching a debris field near oahu. the helicopters had taken off from a marine corps base for nighttime training mission. investigators are not sure what caused them to crash. >> south carolina senator lindsey graham has thrown his support behind jeb bush for president. he did that today. graham dropped out of the race last month. he becomes the first former candidate to make an official endorsement. republicans have been vying for graham's support because south carolina is a critical early voting state. >> a court ruling today paves the way for billionaire carl icahn to officially take over the taj mahal in atlantic city. the court ruled that trump entertainment the former owner of the casino did nothing wrong when it ended benefits

to its customers. trump entertainment cut off those benefits in 2014 as it filed for bankruptcy. icahn has been trying to take over the hotel and casino and has been funding it for more than a year. he had threatened to cut off that financial support if the court ruling went against him which would have forced the taj mahal to close. >> well, looking a little bit gloomy and we're looking at rain showers. >> overcast most of the day. let's head over to meteorologist adam joseph. >> cloudy skies will lead to rain overnight not a good sign especially when you are looking at the mountain resorts. we're looking at sky6 live spring mountain here. you have skiers snow borders enjoying what is more like spring skiing right now. snow guns have shut off and expecting about a half inch of rain onto the slopes tonight. eventually arctic air comes in where they can fire up those snow guns once again as we get into next week.

43 in the lehigh valley, 45 in reading, 52 philadelphia, 51 in millville. 53 in dover and even the shore temperatures pretty close to that 50-degree mark. we're dealing with sub easterly winds at this time and eventually they'll wrap out of the northeast but with the winds coming off the ocean the ocean is still running very warm for this time of year so that's helping to pull in and keep some of that heat. 7 miles an hour allentown, seven philadelphia and as high as 10 to 12 miles an hour at the shore. as we're looking at this moisture coming in from the south another missed opportunity for a very sizable storm to be all rain and not snow once again. marching up the eastern seaboard. very little in the way of any snow. it's in the higher terrain maybe near snowshoe mountain in west virginia at the present time. future tracker at 9 o'clock tonight that's when some of the showers start to creep up as far north as philadelphia. when you are starting to see yellows and oranges on future tracker that's some of the heavier rainfall. at 11 o'clock that's happening at the shore. lehigh valley starting to get

their first sprinkles and in mostly cloudpoconos rain but thf us including the lehigh valley heavy rain 2:30 in the morning and then by 7:00 a.m., that rain is already lifting out first thing tomorrow morning, clouds linger, maybe a little drizzle especially north of philadelphia and then as we get into the afternoon at 4 o'clock, we're starting to see that sunshine return and, yes, most of us will see the sun on saturday despite how much rain we are getting overnight tonight. as we look at the numbers it is still very mild. you would think after the storm departs the cold air would wrap right in. not so much. 46 tomorrow afternoon, 50 in philadelphia, visitor at the shore but the winds will really start to kick up out of the west-northwest 12 to 20 miles an hour as that storm deepens in new england. your four day at 4:00 forecast it's cloud to sun for saturday, 50 degrees. and then on sunday 40 degrees,

it is dry most of the day. we see some sun early on in the day, clouds thicken up ahead of an arctic front that could be a round of flurries or snow showers, maybe some locations get a quick coating of snow here sunday late evening and night. and then behind that the winds funnel in again monday the holiday, 28 degrees, wind chills in the teens and then on tuesday still windy and cold, 29, wind chills in the teens, so back to back arctic days here monday into tuesday but this is the holiday weekend. many folks will be heading up to the mountains and don't let it discourage you that they're going to see mainly rain. i think they still have a decent amount of slopes ready for you. >> yes and they certainly want everyone to come up. adam thanks. >> okay. >> coming up at 4:30 today a woman is hit by a car as she sits inside her own house. we've got a live report on how it happened. >> but up next, a fire forces a neighborhood full of people out into the cold when firefighters find something dangerous sitting near the flames.

as part of the agreement the 41-year-old was ordered to complete a rehab program attend anger management, perform community service and pay $2,500 for ruby's medical care. if wallace fails to complete the program, then he will go to trial. dangerous safety violations and a lack of staffing, that's what philadelphia school maintenance workers say they deal with every day. the group marched outside the school district building on broad street this morning demanding changes. all of this is in response to the boiler explosion that injured a worker earlier this week. >> we've given our skill. we've given our suggestions. we've given contributions out of our pocket for the good of the school district. but you can't ask to give our lives. >> the boiler exploded on wednesday at franklin edmund school in west oak lane. school district officials say they have an independent engineer coming in to figure out what happened. the fire department is also

investigating. >> police say they are concerned about a rash of gun thefts in delaware. in the last month, six firearms were reported stolen from cars across new castle county. police are urging gun owners to find a more secure place to store those weapons so they don't end up in the wrong hands. >> we suggest storing it in your residence and within your residence in a locked safe and with the added additional benefit of having secure from untrained adults or children. >> now police are also warning residents not to leave their vehicles running unattended. more car thieves have been striking during the cold winter month months when people like to let their cars warm up before they get inside them. it's happened 29 times since november in new castle county alone. fire crews are looking into a pair of suspicious vehicle fires that broke out overnight in north philadelphia. sources tell "action news" that two vans were deliberately set on fire and that some time of flammable device was found inside one of them. the vans were parked on north

sixth street near clearfield. the state fire marshal is investigating. >> new jersey state police want to make sure they are ready for a worst case scenario. that's why they handed out pamphlets in the tractor-trailepamphlets at the n mall. this was a drill to help them prepare and help raise public bareness. >> turning to what was a dramatic day in one delaware neighborhood. check out the scene on colfax court just before 8:00 a.m. after a car drove halfway through a house on the other side of that wall, and underneath the car was a 73-year-old woman. despite being pinned for at least 20 minutes she is expected to be okay. "action news" reporter gray hall has the details. >> reporter: friday morning this wild and chaotic scene jolted neighbors along colfax court in wilmington delaware. >> i was sitting in the lounge chair and i heard a large

bang. >> reporter: what looks like a scene from an action movie is reality after police say the 60-year-old driver backed out of her drive way lost control hit the garage door put the car in drive and eventually lost control a second time and hit a seconds home but it was much worse. she ends up knocking down the walls and driving inside the house trapping the 73-year-old homeowner. >> she was in her kitchen and i don't know how the heck she made it out of there. she definitely had a guardian angel. >> reporter: police say the elderly victim was trapped thunder car for over 20 minutes before crews were able to free her. one neighbor who called police ran to help the injured driver. >> my neighbor was limping across the grass and when i ran over to her i was calling 911 at the same time and then she collapsed. >> reporter: the driver was able to get out of the car on her own and was able to talk to her neighbors. >> she kept saying it got away from me, it got away from me. that's all she was saying and then she said i want my husband so i went to get him. >> reporter: despite this frightening scene police say

they get sick. turns out there may actually be something called the man flu. according to a new study published in there journal of physiology, researchers found that men suffer more from the flu than women because of their lack of estrogen. scientists believe the female hormone protects women from the more aggressive symptoms of influenza and even reduces the number of virus cells. the team hopes the findings could lead to an estrogen based flu fighter. >> finally i've been telling my wife this for years now. >> yeah, yeah. >> there's a reason. over here at the big board with the big talkers today and we're going to start in north jersey with one animal lover who is now facing up to six months in jail for rescuing two orphaned squirrels. you got to hear about this. this is maria. back in october the monmouth county woman started caring for a distressed squirrel outside her house. when she returned the next morning the original squirrel was gone but two baby squirrels were in her place.

she says she left the newborns for 24 hours hoping the mom would come back but when it became clear that she left them, the woman took them in and started bottle feeding the pair. she immediately reached out to registered wildlife rehab at any times who told her they couldn't take in the squirrels so the family decided to adopt them until room opened up even naming them george and lola. four months later the division of physician and wildlife came knocking. >> and asked me if i had squirrels and i said yes, i i had no problem telling them the story. i was proud. >> well, what she did not know is that caring for squirrels is illegal in new jersey without a permit so she turned george and lola over to officers. still days later she got a $500 ticket in the mail but when she appealed the fine, it got worse. a judge not only told her the fine should have actually been a thousand dollars but she could also face jail time if convicted of keeping a

20's as you come away from the airport. northbound on the roosevelt boulevard at royer street watch out for a crash in the outer drive. a wreck in lower merion along haverford road at andover road and of course the veep, vice president joe biden is in university city at penn this evening so right now expect restrictions along civic sent boulevard and then in a few hours when we see him move back toward the airport we'll see closures once again on the schuylkill, the platt bridge as well as night. because of his visit four of the septa bus routes are running with detours routes 30, 40, 42 and lucy route. we have a crash in plymouth township on ridge pike and by the sunoco in whitpain a wreck along 202 dekalb pike at 73 skippack pike. we'll check it again brian and sharrie in the 5 o'clock hour. >> matt see you then. meteorologist adam joseph standing by with that exclusive and wet accuweather forecast coming up next.

millville, 53 in dover. even low to mid 40's north and west in the poconos at 36 degrees. there's the rain. marching up the i-95 corridor and it's a pretty sizable storm. it goes all the way to the north side and west where it links with some extra energy near chicago and look, it is rain all the way up into the great lakes so everyone getting mainly wet and not white this go around. 9 o'clock tonight 44 philadelphia. the rain is starting to lift through chester county delaware county. low 30's to the north and west. and as we get into 11:30 it is raining everywhere heavy at times especially down to the south. 33 allentown, 42 millville, 44 in wildwood. and at 2 o'clock in the morning, again, it is rain, heavy at times so a at this point this would be really the heart of the storm as it passes by. even the poconos above the freezing point in the poconos maybe they get a little bit, coating half inch of snow on the back end as it departs and at 7:30 tomorrow morning you can see it is mainly just cloudy but a little cooler with temperatures in the 30's

to low 40's and by the afternoon sunshine starts to return and 50's down to the south and still above average to the north and west middle to upper 40's. again, here's that rain. about a half an inch or more philadelphia trenton and wilmington over an inch at the shore closer to the storm and even the lehigh valley up into the poconos between a quarter to a half an inch of rain. then behind it we get this big cold pool of air at low pressure and central and southern canada. that pulls down behind the system and by monday 10:00 a.m. we're looking at temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below average for the midatlantic but really the core of that cold air stays in the north planes where there will be 20 to 25 degrees below average next week. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast 50 as we go from clouds to sun tomorrow. there could be that arctic front that comes through with a couple of scattered snow showers or flurries sunday late evening and night. sunday itself dry at 40. wind chills only in the teens

delaware valley's leading news program. with jaime apody, meteorologist cecily tynan, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> philadelphia police are trying to track down a hit and run driver that left a 45-year-old man badly hurt. tonight they are checking area surveillance cameras to help in their investigation. it is friday night. monica is off. sharrie williams is joining us. and the big story on "action news is the latest on the search for the driver that hit the man in hunting park. >> "action news" reporter trish hartman spoke to a witness who found the victim and called 911. she joins us live now at the scene at the fifth street and hunting park avenue with the very latest on the story. trish. >> reporter: well, sharrie, folks who know the victim say he was on his way home from his job. police have been working this case all day and still no leads in this hit and run that left a man in critical condition. a philadelphia police officer patrolled the area of fifth street and hunting park avenue looking for anything that

might help detectives figure out what happened at the intersection around 3 a.m. >> got some marks on his head. i pulled him into the sidewalk so he won't get hit by a car and i waited for the police. >> reporter: george said he was running outer for cigarettes when he saw the 45-year-old man in the street badly injured. he says he called 911 and stayed with the victim who was unconscious. >> i say you okay? can you hear me? he ain't say nothing. >> reporter: police say car parts were found in the street and those are being processed to see if they're related to the crash. folks at this grocery store just a few blocks away from the crash scene say they saw the victim thursday night fixing this cool are a few hours before he was hit. >> he in here last night. he do some job for this place and we talking about another job he going to dodge he's a man everybody know around here he's a hard working guy. >> reporter: police are reviewing surveillance footage from several nearby businesses. people in this neighborhoods hope someone will come forward with information.
