president joe biden in philadelphia tonight to kick offer his moon shot mission to find a cure for cancer. and three days after being charged with the mission by president obama, biden toured the abramson cancer center at the university of pennsylvania. biden who lost his son, beau, to cancer last may says he'll devote his last year in office and beyond to take on this cause. "action news" reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is live at the university of pennsylvania medical center. ali, tell us about what happened there late today. >> reporter: and jim there is a lot of excitement here on penn campus. researchers and healthcare providers are thrilled that the vice president decided to start his mission here in philadelphia. and it wasn't just talk. the vice president is starting to lay out a plan. vice president joe biden told top doctors and researchers his mission to find a cure for cancer will be his most

difficult and complex undertaking but he believes a cure can be found. >> we're on the cusp, you're the on the cusp of some phenomenal break throughs. >> reporter: oncologist dr. robert lustig agrees. he says the goal is achievable but. >> a lot has to be done in basic research and then translated into patient care. it will take time but i think we can do it. >> reporter: mr. biden says his plan is two-fold. first, increased funding from the government and citizens. second, coordinate and collaborate all government agencies working on the fight against cancer. >> so that we are partners, not impediments, we are partners with the private sector. >> we are so much better positioned than any nation in the world to lead the world. >> reporter: and it is that sharing of information that vice president joe biden says has to happen in order to help patients now get better care and in order to help find a

news" has learned today lined scenes the eagles brass were seeking the advice of former quarterback ron jaworski. jaws shows us the massive book the eagles relied on for information during their coaching search today. espn analyst was among the select few who had input on the hiring of chiefs offensive coordinator doug pedersonly while jaws was not in the room when they interviewed pederson in kansas city last weekend, jaws was present for some of the coaching candidate interviews. jaws tells "action news" today the eagles got this hire right. >> doug pederson i believe will wow this town. he's got experience here in the city of philadelphia. he knows the fabric of this community. he lived here. he worked here. not for a year, for many years. so he understands what this community is about. and you also have to be realistic. he's going to need a strong supporting cast. you know, it's his first opportunity to be a head coach in a national football league so the eagles have to make sure they surround him with

all the right people and i truly believe they will. >> that is a very strong statement to say that he's going the wow this city. we'll see what happens. but jaws goes on to say this was a very difficult decision because there were so many good candidates. this really could have gone either way here. >> but does he say that pederson was the eagles first choice? we don't know that. >> he would not say. we asked him many times. he would not say but dick vermeil later coming up in sports we'll talk about whether that even matters whether he was the first second third or even fourth choice. >> jeff thank you. >> okay. >> all right, 20 people have to find other places to sleep tonight. in the wake of a destructive blaze this morning in burlington city. the fire broke out in the 300 block of saint mary's street and it spread to a total of four homes. one adult and two children were taken to the hospital but they are okay. what they left behind is not. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live at the fire scene tonight. john. >> reporter: jim, saint

mary's street remains closed looks like it's going to be that way for some time. it was a mess here today. this fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m. or a little before when many of the victims were still sleeping. >> wild screams and yelling. i took a look out my front window and i seen a young lady running outside so i took a look out the back window and i just seen flames growing. >> reporter: william johnson grabbed his family and got out. within minutes the flames were rapidly consuming the roof timbers in the four house row of homes including johnson's. the fire burned for about two hours, 20 people had to escape but remarkably no one was seriously hurt. as you can see from chopper6, much of the roof collapsed. without modern fire walls flames raced along the top floors. >> the pattern was up in the crawlspace in the attic it's all opened and it just took off from there. >> reporter: so hit free reign. >> free reign on the third floor yes. >> reporter: given that heavy roof damage officials say it's been too dangerous for officials to enter the building to look for a cause. in the morning's chaos several pets went missing among them

six-year-old roxy who was later discovered by a firefighter in an upstairs closet of stephanie miller's mother's home if they found her and she survived everything, the whole thing. >> reporter: made shiloh roxy's litter mate and the mill's outside cat found his way home. furthest from where it's believed the fire started the miller's home sustained the least today. four. stephanie's mom was able to retrieve many possessions her daughter thankful for the neighbor who alerted her mom to the fire. >> he came knocking on the door and my mom happened to fall asleep downstairs on the couch and was right by the door thing to do and she just got out like she didn't have any -- she had her nightgown on and like i said the neighbors gave her clothes and shoes. >> reporter: well, so what happens next? the millers who live at the far end of the block hope their house can be saved but they also understand it's part of a row and that can be trick deal. the houses at this end of the block are the most damaged and

thinking is they'll probably havhave to be demolished. >> flames gutted part of a montgomery county apartment complex this afternoon. fire crews were called to the hunt club apartments on wood view lane in lower gwynedd at 1:30. firefighters had the blaze under control within an hour. fortunately nobody was hurt. philadelphia police are trying to track down the driver who hit a 45-year-old man early this morning in hunting park. the victim is in critical condition after being struck at the intersection of fifth and hunting park at 3 a.m. a man out running an errand found the victim in the street and he called police. the victim suffered head injuries and broken bones. he is being treated at temple university hospital. philadelphia police just released this sketch of the suspect wanted for shooting a 75-year-old woman in the face on new year's eve. the incident happened just

before 10:00 in the morning on the 71 monday block of montague street in tacony. the woman tells police that a man demanded her purse. she refused and was then shot in the cheek. the thief got away in a white nissan maxima. there's a $6,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the suspect. investigators in trenton say they have broken up a drug ring that was tied to the bloods street gang. dozens of people were arrested more than a million dollars worth of heroin, crack and cocaine have been seized. police say 35-year-old bobby williams was the ringleader. they say he led a subset of the bloods street gang which supplied drugs and weapons to smaller organizations throughout new jersey and pennsylvania. but it was the community in which williams lived that led to his downfall. >> the residents in the area and surrounding area complained that their area had been invaded by individuals

>> police in wilmington still trying to figure out what caused a 60-year-old woman to plow her car into a house this morning. actually the trouble began before that happened. "action news" reporter gray hall has the story. >> reporter: crews were in full rescue mode after a car lost control and slammed into this home along colfax court in wilmington delaware around 7:40 friday morning. chop are 6hd was over the scene. >> i'm praying they're okay but this is scary. >> reporter: police say it started when the 60-year-old driver somehow lost control slammed into a garage at a separate home. then lost control again and

careens into a second home. this time she ends up driving the car through the wall and right into the kitchen. officers arrived to that scene within two minutes but the homeowner was trapped under the car for over 20 minutes as crews worked to free her. >> i don't know how the heck she made it out of there. she definitely had a guardian angel. >> reporter: as neighbors heard the crash and came outside to the chaos they called for help they say the driver was able to make it out of the car but collapsed before paramedics arrived. >> she kept saying it got away from me, it got away from me. that's all she was saying. and then she said i want my husband so i went to get him. >> reporter: the 60-year-old driver is charged with reckless driving but police are still not giving a definite answer as to what made her lose control. >> she was going to work. she always backs out but i don't think she had a seizure. i don't know, maybe she was in a hurry. i have no idea. >> reporter: police say the injuries were not life-threatening. i can tell that you earlier today the families for both the victim and also the driver showed up to this

gase. >> there were really good candidates. i kept hearing all along when no one wants an eagles job. are you kidding me? this position was one of the most coveted head coaching positions in there national football league. i sat on those interviews. i know how bad these gentlemen that were interviewed wanted the eagles coaching job. so, you can't get to everyone. you try to get to as many as you can but at the end of the day the eagles got it right. >> jaws who was on the search committee wouldn't say whether or not pederson was their number one choice but whether the chiefs offensive coordinator was or was not, dick vermeil says that doesn't matter. our jaime apody caught up with the former eagles coach today. he says he wasn't the eagles first choice in 1976. but their third and look he took them to the super bowl. vermeil says pederson's background working under andy reid will serve him well. >> i'd like the see him come here and everybody rally around him. stop looking for the negatives.

stop saying geez we didn't get the guy we really wanted. the guy you really wanted may not be good enough anyway. you always have to start. i started somewhere. don shula started somewhere. they all get their first opportunity and -- but i think this guy comes pretty well prepared. >> espn sal pa paolantonio says he'll get a five year deal. former giants coach tom coughlin was in play to get the job until the very end. >> i am told that coughlin wanted too much control and too much money and a long term deal and that's when things broke down with tom coughlin and they focused on getting doug pederson. >> do you look at this like pederson was their last option? >> pederson was one of their last options but i think he's a good option. >> let's hope so. while pederson can't be officially hired and introduced until the chiefs are eliminated from the playoffs, former eagles coach

[laughter] >> sure. >> most of it will be falling when we're sleeping. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that the rain is really knocking on our door. we're dry right now in philadelphia but the showers are breaking out in sussex and kent county, delaware and heading towards cape may and the rain will continue to overspread or region from the southwest to the northeast through the evening hours. so, the accuweather highlights show that, yes, we do get an overnight soaking before temperatures really take a tumble on monday. rainfall totals, this is a coastal storm, it's fast moving so the heaviest rain will be along the coast where we'll likely see more than an inch of rain. around philadelphia but a half inch and a little bit lower farther north and west.

and what this storm will do is open the door for an arctic front that will deliver a taste of very cold air on monday, martin luther king holiday so if you're heading out at 9 o'clock in the morning to do some volunteering bundle up in a lot of layers. wind chills 16 degrees in philadelphia at 9 o'clock, allentown 10, reading nine, the poconos one and the wind chills will pretty much hover will all day long. big change from today. right now it's mild, 50 degrees down from our high of 53. 13 degrees above normal. allentown 39. millville still 50. trenton 49. sea isle city 47. part of the reason why it's so warm we have winds out of the southeast. the ocean temperature very warm for this time of the year, 43 degrees. the temperatures remain well above freezing tonight so satellite6 along with action radar slowing this approaching storm is wet not white. we've got some heavy rain that's moving through northern virginia right now so this will continue pushing up to the north so around 9 o'clock

i think we'll see some showers breaking out around philadelphia, steady rain across south jersey and delaware. by about 11 o'clock it overspreads our whole region. look at the temperatures, though. 42 degrees in philadelphia. even the lehigh valley above freezing, 33. around 3 o'clock in the morning some heavy rain along the coast and this is when we could see a change over to some wet snow in the poconos and look what happens by early tomorrow morning. by 7:30, the sunrise is at 7:20. by 7:30 the rain is out of here. lots of clouds but by the afternoon the clouds breaking for some sunshine and temperatures around 50 degrees so all in all saturday is looking really nice. but then things change by monday. the upper air pattern shows this low pressure high in the atmosphere and what this low pressure will do, it will move down farther to the south by monday so we're looking at temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees below average. the core of the cold air will be across the northern plains states as low as 25 degrees below average so some places
