a pleasant good morning to you, it is 7:00 a.m. saturday, january 16. i'm gray hall alongside alicia vitarelli. in the news this morning, decision made, but now the eagles have to wait as their choice for head coach doug peterson finishes his season with the chief. new overnight, two people are hurt in a three car does he want. we have the details. temperatures in the 50s, enjoy today because big changes are ahead. meteorologist chris sowers stepping outside for a live look at the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. how does it feel out there, chris? >> reporter: it's a little chilly, it's obviously damp, but not too bad for january

standards. the temperatures are in the 40s south and east. satellite and radar showing there goes the coastal storm pulling into new england, bye-bye then, no rain for us at this point now. we see light drizzle across the lehigh valley. spritzes and sprinkles around the immediate philadelphia area. from this point on, the skies will begin to brighten up a little bit. we'll go a combination of sun and clouds, 43 degrees in philadelphia. the normal high for this time of year, which usually occurs for this time in the afternoon is 40. we're above that. millville, 42. sea isle, 43. trenton, 41. remember those numbers. wait until you see the changes in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. it's a damp start, clouds and sunshine, mild, 52 degrees is the forecasted high. a little bit cooler north and west, highs topping out in the mid to upper 40s, but again not too bad considering the middle

of january. when i come back in just a few minutes, we want to talk about the icy cold arctic changes arriving sunday night. they will last most of the upcoming week, it will be the coldest week of the winter so far. i'll have the details in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. let's get you back to the breaking news we're following for you this morning, police on the scene of a barricade investigation in west philadelphia. it started around 4:30 a.m. it's been going on for 2 1/2 hours now. that's the 4900 block of chestnut street in west philly. s.w.a.t teams on the scene right now. septa is rerouting the buses because the streets have been blocked off there. police on the scene after neighbors reporting hearing gunshots coming from the third floor in the rear of a house on the 4900 block of chestnut street. police trying to make contact with the occupants at this time. so far no reports of injuries, but s.w.a.t teams are on the case this morning. your time, 7:02. the eagles have settled on a new

coach to lead the birds, but we have to wait until we hear from him. doug peterson is a little bills right now helping lead the current team the kansas chiefs in the afc playoff game. the chiefs will may the new england patriots in fox borough this afternoon. helping the eagles find the new head coach, ron jaworski he was part of the interviewing process, but tells "action news" finding peterson was tough, but he believes he is the right man. peterson will wow the town. he has experience in the city of philadelphia. he knows the fabric of the community. he lived here, he worked here not for a year, for many years, he inside what the community is about. peterson is currently the chief's offensive coordinator under andy reid. he worked with reid his entire

nfl coaching career. he was quarterback of the eagles, as well back in 1999 until donovan mcnabb took over. two people were hurt in a wild crash that happened in southwest philadelphia. here's what we know. two cars collided one ended up on the front lawn of a home south 67th street and chester avenue. this morning a driver and passenger are being treated in the hospital and exoacted to -- expected to be okay. the search continues for a driver who hit a man and left him in the middle of the street in hunting park, the crash happened at 5th and hunting park avenue yesterday morning. he suffered a head injury and broken bones and being treated at temple university hospital. a manner out running an errand found the victim in the street and called police. penndot announced it may have a solution to the bottle

neck traffic on the schuylkill expressway. the solution would be to open another lane between city avenue and king of prussia. dann cuellar has the details on the study and how penndot could make this all possible. >> reporter: a sea of red tail lights, a common scene on the the ever-unpredictable, often challenging schuylkill expressway. the area between 202 and route 1 found to be among the 50 worst bottle necks in the country. it been gridlocked since it opened in november 1958. there were ideas that have been tossed around over the years, what's the latest idea? opening the shoulders to traffic during peak hours or special events. the enormous traffic volume on the road and penndot is doing the study to look at operational

enhancements that can be done in the short term. it would require extensive careering and then there's this question, what happens if there's a there's -- an emergency. there's a lot of details that need to be worked out. >> reporter: what do motorists think? it's a great idea, it is congested as it is. with the bottle neck that happens -- if it means traffic will flow a little better it's a great idea. it cuts down congestion in traffic. it would be a nightmare if there was a dangerous accident and somebody was hurt or fire, you would never get emergency vehicles through. >> reporter: as you can see one burning inenigma that remains unsolved. they will have the study done and decision by the spring.

which led to doug peterson. there are hundreds of coaches in this book, everyone was talked about. >> reporter: your -- jaworski among the selected few that had the book on all the coaches. he sat in on the interviews during the search. he believes the chief's offensive coordinator is the right guy for the eagles. doug peterson will wow the town. there were incredible candidates that's what made the decision so hard. it's great it was not an easy decision. we all talked long, hard and lengthy about hiring the right head coach. it wasn't he's the guy, it was instantaneous let's move on. there were good candidates. at the end of the day, the eagles got it right. >> reporter: jaws on the search committee wouldn't say whether peterson was the number one choice. whether he was or not, dick vermeal tells us, that doesn't

matter, because he wasn't the eagles number one choice back in 1976 and he led them to the super bowl. jamie apody caught up with the former eagles coach, vermeil said he was the third choice 40 years ago behind joe paterno. he said peterson's background as a quarterback and learning under andy reid was a plus. i would like to see him everyone rally around him, not look at the negatives, and not get the guy you really wanted he may be not really wanted somewhere else. >> reporter: peterson cannot be officially hired as the eagles coach until after the chiefs are out of the playoffs which could happen as early as tonight. this is a situation where joseph free lori wanted -- jeffrey lori wanted to get control back to the front

to ferman saying if he testified in the civil case the testimony would not be used in a criminal case. efforts to reach castor and the current d.a. have been unsuccessful. security forces in west africa storm a hotel freeing hostages caught in a deadly showdown with a group tied to al qaeda. more than 100 people were rescued from the luxury hotel. at least 23 people did not make it out alive. some bodies were found in the cafe. dozens of people wounded in the attack. several hostages were taken and two of the women who were the hostage takers died. the hotel is in a place americans often stay, american special forces were on the scene offering tactical advice.
