puts the dorm on lock down next on "action news". arctic blast is on the way, we start the day with the bit of snow but that was just a prelude for wicked cold arriving tonight. prepare for bone chilling

cold, potential for icing roads and winning winds. sunday night i'm walter perez. sarah has the night off. big story on "action news" is a blast have of wintry weather that will make things uncomfortable with the start of the week ahead. lets get to meteorologist cecily tynan in for melissa with a first check of the accu weather forecast. >> hi, walter. if you like winter, you may love this week. we have a lot of it the on the way. storm tracker six live double scan showing a system i'm tracking tonight does not look like much. few scattered snow showers. this is an arctic front and that will bring us a bitter blast, of some very cold air, and part of the problem is that this is coming after, our first measurable snow of the season. the atlantic city airport reporting 2.8 inches of snow, that is a record snow amount for this date. and dennisville cape may county, 2.2. new castle county, delaware, .8. chadds ford in philadelphia both reporting half inch of snow. that snow came earlier in the day from the coastal storm, got a piece of extra energy

that moved inland. what happened a lot of that snow melted on the roads. now the problem is that temperatures are dropping below freezing and we're getting refreeze. philadelphia 31. allentown 25. wilmington 27. the trenton 28 degrees. cold enough that the real cold air is behind that arctic front, and, that wind chill, behind this front is chicago, and feels like 17 degrees, and, we're looking at wind chills in the single digits, and teens, really the next two days. so, the morning rush forecast i know tomorrow is a holiday for a lot of people. but some people do have to go to work. use caution. we are looking at patchy black ice. temperatures in the 20's. wind chills in the single digits. we will keep this air mass, for two days straight, and with wind chills really not climbing out of the teens. then we will moderate mid week. but by late this week i'm looking at a potential of the first winter storm of the season. i will have have details on the timing with the full accu weather seven day forecast,

walter. lets move outside to "action news" reporter christie lleto braving the chill live overlooking the the schuylkill expressway, hi there, christie. >> hi there walter. big threat tonight is black ice for drivers, wet road, coupled with tumbling temperatures and already proving to be a challenge for someone on the road. >> icy grant avenue toys blame for forcing this driver, to lose control of their vehicle will and slam into a utility pole. afternoon snow showers from delaware county all the way to atlantic city left roads in our region, soaked, and target for black ice. penndot crews are spot salting the road as temperatures tumble. >> we're concerned about later on, is when the temperatures start to drop because the roads are wet, and we will have some start getting icy spots. >> unaudible. >> the the road is a sheet of ice. >> reporter: roads in camden county, new jersey proved to be a dangerous sunday.

students at penn state's main campus in university park. police have a a person in custody after a violent threat put a dorm on lock down. "action news" reporter wendy saltsman is live in the satellite center with the details. >> reporter: we are learning that threat was made by a fat inner a dispute with his family and he had threatened harm against his two children living in the campus dorm. he was taken in custody in harrisburg a hour and a half ago but it was a tense four hours for students on campus. around 5:45, students at penn state got an alarming text. the title, bomb thread, we spoke with nyra a student who lives in hamilton dorm, the building that was allegedly targeted. >> the text message and e mailed specifically said, to stay inside, close the windows lock the door. >> reporter: hinton and other student said there were armed guard outside but they were unclear about who or why the dorm was being threaten. >> that is where the the guard was. he had an assault rifle. there was two of them at

first. then there was a third, guy directing military gear who walk by with a assault rifle as well. >> lexi and david, belong to the student's on line news media side on ward state. >> they have, you know, multiple cars, armed, police office are standing outside the building. making sure that no one, you know, goes in or out of the building, it is on lock down. >> i did see some of the guards. obviously when you see things like that, with that much knowledge, then it can get frightening. >> reporter: as students were told to lock their doors hint on says others were allowed to leave. so he took what he saw as the the safe route and went to the friend's house. >> there is school shootings every day and i did not want to put myself in the situation where i did not feel like it was safe. >> reporter: penn state sent out texts telling students not to let strangers inside the building. then finally a text saying

that the threat actor had been located and is in custody. >> i really didn't feel like i knew what was happening. it didn't feel safe. >> reporter: the university says that they take threats of violence very seriously, going so far as to lock down that 550 student dorm room. now that suspect is in custody they are telling students they can resume their normal activities. live from the satellite center, i'm wendy saltsman for channel six "action news". >> thanks, wendy. fire crews were called to the house fire in hamilton township mercer county. fire fighters arrived quickly to find flames rising from the garage. you can see fire hose pulled inside through a window of the park car. police believe the driver had a medical episode and then the engine over heated. luckily crews got the upper hand in a half an hour so the rest of the home was not damaged. investigators are still trying to figure out what started a fire that resulted in a death of the eight five-year old woman in salem county. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the 400 block of

groff road in upper pittsgrove township. two people were inside the home the at the time. a man was able to escape but would the man died in the blaze n word yet on her identity. a manhunt is underway tonight for the person, who opened fire, inside of a home less shelter in philadelphia, earlier this morning. the one employee was kill. another was injured. "action news" reporter trish hartman has more. >> reporter: employees, family members and residents gathered at the station house transitional shelter on north broad street, shocked at the violence that had just taken place. >> i saw him laying down and i saw him laying there with the sheet overtop of him. i knew it was him. >> reporter: police say a man who what's vick from the shelter friday night when he was intoxicated came back 6:00 . he got in an argument with an employee and that is when police say the the suspect opened fire, shooting one man in his 40's in the head, killing him. another employee, a 26 year-old man was shot in the hip, a and then was taken to temple university hospital. he is expected to recover. officials say that they have

lost a dedicated worker who excelled in a difficult job. >> when you have to run a facility that has rules and you are still loved here it makes you special person. >> reporter: chester says, normally people are searched, padded down when they enter the shelter. in this case they entered with food workers. after the tragic shooting, security procedures will be looked at closely. former philadelphia a's mayor wilson goodies ceo of self incorporated, a none in profit which runs eight of the city shelters including station house. >> we will investigate whatever appropriate means we need to investigate, to ensure that in the future, our employees and residents are safe, in the environment. >> reporter: statement released by mayor jim kenney says in part the city will assist the shelter with the review of its security procedures as part of our continuing efforts to make all of our shelters safe places for their residents. mayor also urged those in need to use the shelter during the

upcoming code blue triggered by bitter cold conditions that are expected to last through tuesday. still, many residents say that they are shaken. >> just need guard or something. they need something. that right there shouldn't happen. >> reporter: reporting from north philadelphia, trish hartman for channel six "action news". a small group of people braved the cold tonight with the hope of solving a five-year old hit and run case. friend and family of anthony breslen gathered at frankford and benson in torresdale where he was struck by two hit and run drivers. police have never been able to identify either driver. his mother, patty, hopes someone will come forward with information about this case. is there still no sign of the 12 marines, including one from our area missing since thursday night after an accident during a routine training exercise in hawaii. neighbors there in hawaii held a candle light vigil overnight for the missing marines. thirty-one year-old captain brian kennedy, who is from malvern, was on board one of the choppers that crashed off the north shore of the hawaii.

another war in the middle east. >> reporter: as for two remaining ex-prisoners one is believed to be in iran and a american student released independently, has already headed home. in new york i'm elizabeth hur for channel six "action news". reverend jesse jackson says people of flynt, michigan caught up in the drinking the water controversy there have been betrayed. jackson told a church in flynt today that the city should be considered a crime scene because officials put everyone's lives at risk by not revealing how high the lead levels are in the water system. the tap water in flynt has been found contaminated after city switch from the detroit water system to the flynt river as a cost cutting move. space x latest satellite launch was a success but landing the rocket on the ocean platform did not work out quite so well. >> three, two, one... >> private space company tweeted that the rocket hit the platform too hard. the landing legs broke as a result and rocket then flopped in the pacific. this is fourth failed landing

>> wow. short term earlier a twister ripped through beach town of seees to key, monk homes destroyed was 1.8 million-dollar house that was leveled. people living there were briefly trapped inside but escaped with minor injuries. time for a check of the accu weather forecast with meteorologist cecily tynan. we have bitter cold coming our way. >> brutally cold the next few days and by end of the week we could be dealing with the first winter storm of the season. the it will be an interesting week. >> lack of enthusiasm. >> storm tracker six live double scan showing that the snow we had earlier today, has now left the region. there are a few snow showers up by pottsville, associated with the arctic front moving through. it is as far as snowfall amounts most areas less than half inch. newtown square a third of the inch of snow but four year-old ella made a tiny little snow man on her brick wall. i have been getting photos of kid on my fast bike paneling, twitter account really even eyeing the snow today. they have been starving for some of this snow.

we could get more by end of the week. but in the meantime the focus really is on the temperatures. temperatures below freezing in most of our viewing area. any of that snow that melt today is freezing, again with that refreeze. 31 degrees in philadelphia allentown 25. wilmington 27. millville, 26. trenton is 28 degrees. but the real cold air has yet to arrive, but it will be doing so, in a matter of one to two hours. the satellite six with action radar is showing a line of some snow showers, barely any snow activity with this. but there is plenty of cold air, and wind behind this system. future tracker showing by 12:30, winds will be up to about 25 miles an hour, even stronger in the morning, at 6:30. those high wind stay with us, right through the afternoon and really right through tuesday, so we're talking about wind chills in the single digits and teens and the wind how long gusting up to about 35 miles an hour. so, that is tomorrow and
