doug arrived in philadelphia. he shook a few hands and hugged eagles director and driven away. he said pederson needs to sign his contract in a press conference with the new coach would be later in the week. pederson is no stranger to philadelphia. he played for reid in 1999 and was a coach from 2009 to 2012 before moving to kc. the hiring of pederson has drawn the scorn of many fans, some of whom wanted a sexier pick. chip kelly was such a coach after a 7-9 season and second straight season out of the playoffs, cle -- kelly was fired paving the way for pederson. it is unclear when there will be

now, lots of sunshine with perhaps, the redevelopment of clouds later in the day. right now we're at 24 in philadelphia. 23 in allentown. 21 in reading. 23 in wilmington. 23 in trenton. there are strong winds blowing in from the west today gusting as high as 30 to 35 miles per hour at times. you put that together and we still even at the noon hour have a windchill in the single digits in philadelphia. feels like 9 as you step outside, 11 in allentown. 6 in reading. 7 in wilmington. 12 in trenton and some of the higher numbers are very raw. as we go through the rest of the afternoon you'll want the coat and the gloves and scarf and hat. 28 forecast high swell below the average high of 40. tonight's low, 16 degrees well below the average low of 25 degrees. of course, windchills will be in the single digits through much of the afternoon and especially the nighttime period as the

searching for a gunman after a woman was shot during an attempted robbery on charles street in the wissinoming center. she is in stable condition at this hour. the gunman was dressed in all black and used a black ban deferment -- scarf to cover his face. police are looking for a shooter who killed a worker who was evicted from the station house transition shelter on north broad street. he came back yesterday morning entering the security checkpoint with food service workers and got into an argument with a worker and pulled out a gun and started shooting. mayor jim kenny said the shelter security will be reviewed. of people all over the county and across the area are paying tribute to martin luther king junior today. thousands have been volunteering at girard college on this day of

service and they could set a new national record. katherine scott is live at the school in north philadelphia with more on that. hi, katherine. >> reporter: hi, rick, so many people doing so many different projects at girard college today. the events has wrapped up. you can see people are here getting ready to pack up and go home, but a lot of valuable work being done here today, while this work is impressive, the hope from organizers this is a starting point. they say dr. king was dedicated to service 365 days a year. these volunteers made the work look like fun at the 21st greater philadelphia martin luther king day of service at girard college. five thousand volunteers doing 150 different projects to celebrate the legacy of dr. martin luther king junior. we do what we can to make our community stronger. martin luther king was a champion of strong communities.

many of the things we care most about begin with healthy communities. >> reporter: from sorting books to thanking have veterans, the projects run the gambet. there's a shareholder focus on improving communities and the educational component is key. dr. king brought so many different people together of all ages and background. if we can do that and have people get to know one another and breakdown barriers and build understanding that's part of what we needed to. >> reporter: 140,000 volunteers throughout the region are pitching in today. organizers say that's an national record and the biggest king day event in the nation. look what he created. >> reporter: and in an effort to promote economic justice they held a jobs fair as part of the event including holding workshops for resume writing skills and interview skills.

a lot happened at girard college a lot of valuable work was done. katherine scott channel 6 "action news." thank you. also on this mlk day of service, the city of chester is holding a number of activities in honor the slain civil rights leader. things got underway at the chester salvation army center. people prepared packages for the hungry and there was a cleanup program and the kids took part in the arts and craft projects creating their own works of alter to be displayed throughout the city. delaware valleys clash in the latest presidential debate. a man is taken into custody after allegedly threatening his children at penn state university. the entire incident forced the school into lockdown. those stories and meteorologist david murphy is back with the frigid accuweather forecast when "action news" at noon continues in just a moment.

philadelphia international. it's cold across the region david murphy has the details coming up. a historic business in new jersey goes up in flames we're live on the scene of the devastation. now, the details still developing at this hour, the new leader of the philadelphia eagles has arrived, doug pederson landed late this morning at philadelphia international airport. "action news" was there as he stepped off the plane. we were first to show you the video on the air. he flew in from kansas where he worked under former eagles head coach andy reid. he played quarterback for 12 seasons in the nfl mostly as a backup. in 1999 he played for the eagles. he was chosen as head coach as jech -- jeffery lori fired chip kelly. w
