all the details. hey, jamie. >> hey there rick and monica. wow, it's finally happened. we finally have a head coach officially. doug pederson is still inside the complex behind me. he's been meeting all day with his new owner and his new gm and who knows who else is in there. meetings all day the he's expected to leave the complex at 6:30 and go to din are at eagles owner jeffrey lurie's house. we were there when doug pederson touched down in philadelphia before 11:00 a.m. this morning greeted with smiles and a nice little sports coat there. pederson of course the offensive coordinator under andy reid with the kansas city chiefs. former eagles quarterback and coach as well but he's never been a head coach in the nfl. in fact he hasn't really been a head coach except for when he coached in high school about 10 years ago so that will be interesting so expect him to bring along with him some expertise as part of his staff much he's formulating his staff inside as we speak and "action news" has also

learned a big name is expected likely to be named defensive coordinator. his name jim schwartz. he last coached the bills defense in 2014. in his last three stints as a defensive coordinator schwartz has finishes of fifth, seventh and ninth in the nfl in his devils. he used to run a wide nine. not sure what system he'll run with the eagles but he's a guy who used to be a head coach, has experience as a coordinator and a position coach likely a nice name to be able to guide pederson here with the eagles. "action news" has learned that schwartz has just arrived in philadelphia and keep an eye on him as a name to be named new defensive coordinator for the philadelphia eagles. of course pederson will be introduced tomorrow at a 2:00 p.m. press conference and of course we are your place to be for all the coverage surrounding that. we'll have updates all day on "action news" and we'll be live streaming that press conference on 6abc.com. much more throughout the night

here outside the novacare complex where the eagles finally have a head coach and he's doug pederson. i'm jaime apody channel6 "action news. >> thank you jamie. on to our other top story tonight that everyone is talking about today, the cold. and it is really cold outside. as we take a look from sky6 over spring mountain this is the kind of day that skiers live for. lots of folks hitting the slopes today and for the rest of us we're all just trying to layer as best as we can. meteorologist adam joseph is here now with the first check of that accuweather forecast. adam. >> those snow guns are on trying to make that snow after a little bit of a coating on spring mountain this past weekend but this morning we woke up, yeah, we were in the freezer. 4 degrees in philadelphia was the wind chill, reading one below zero, trenton five above, wilmington two and atlantic city this morning it felt like 4 degrees. presently those numbers not much better. it feels like nine in philadelphia, three lancaster and reading, four in allentown, teens down to the south and even atlantic city

learning the name of the man investigators say is responsible. "action news" reporter walter perez live at that shelter for us with more tonight. walter. >> reporter: monica investigators say the suspect was a client of the homeless shelter here but often arrived high and he often arrived aggressive and officials from the shelter say this past saturday morning he arrived very high and very aggressive and so the police were called and the suspect was removed from the building. he returned on sunday morning with a gun. police say it was this man, 32-year-old john brock who entered the homeless shelter and shot shelter employee edward barksdale at least five times. the 43-year-old victim's family members say they still cannot believe what happened this weekend. >> still waiting for him to pop out like hey i just want to see who love me. that's just who he was. give you the shirt off his back. he loved that job. that shelter was his life.

>> reporter: investigators say that brock also shot 26-year-old lamont barham once in the left hip before fleeing on foot. we spoke with barham's father who says his son remains in stable condition at temple university hospital. >> just got shot in his hip but the bullet ends up in his stomach. it didn't tear it, didn't do any major damage. they were able to fix everything. >> reporter: police describe the suspect as a homeless man with 10 prior arrests mostly linked to crimes involving drugs and violence. >> obviously he's considered armed and extremely dangerous so we don't want anyone approaching him. if you see him or know where he is contact us and we'll go get him. >> reporter: both of the victims' families say they forgive the gunman butter they also say it will be a long time before they forget it. >> i mean i'm dealing with it. it's hard. i don't let him see me, you know, trying to -- it's hard, it's real hard. >> this would never be okay. we will find a way to deal with it but it will never be

okay. >> reporter: police by the way say that barksdale and barlam did help investigators remove brock from the building early saturday morning so they do believe those two were specifically targeted. brock meanwhile stands -- he's 32 years old and he's 5 feet 11-inches tall weighs 200 pounds. anyone with any information is asked to call police. reporting live from north philadelphia, walter perez, channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you will walter. of course today is dr. martin luther king day and throughout the nation today was marked with service and reflection. here in philadelphia people from all walks of life gathered to pay tribute to dr. king and his legacy. "action news" reporter vernon odom was there. >> ♪ >> reporter: traditional gospel music kicks off the annual king day observance at the liberty bell. lots of dignitaries on land to pay tribute. the center piece the symbolic ringing of the bell at high noon. a now 31-year-old tradition. this was mayor kenny's first time here as the city's top

elected official who like others looked back at american history. >> so this bell only had a meaning for liberty and freedom for a small select group of people but over time that bell became to mean freedom and liberty for more and more people. >> all of the horror that he and so many others will to live through to give us our freedom or to give us the full measure of freedom as a people. >> american history really has been a struggle. to reconcile those noble ideals with the life -- with the nation that we actually have. >> reporter: in north philadelphia 1200 volunteers in a massive display of service giving the mary mccleod bethune school a complete makeover. murals and building projects were star started early in the morning led by the education focused organization known as city year america core. >> 700 students that we serve they're going to come in tomorrow and absolutely be -- they're going love it. >> before it was just a whole bunch of white walls and now

we have stuff in the gym like our sports teams and different stuff like that, so, yeah, it's pretty cool. >> reporter: after more than 20 years, the mlk day of service is becoming a deem rooted tradition in many of america's cities and towns. philadelphia leading the way. in north philadelphia, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news. >> the kitchen at manna was extra busy. volunteers from valley green bank helped to prepare and package meals for people who are critically ill. more than 2500 people who live in the greater philadelphia area and southern new jersey will be fed by this effort. manna was founded back in 1990 with an original mission to help comfort people who were dying of aids. meanwhile hundreds of volunteers young and old alike spent this day preparing brown bagged lunches at the ymca in mount laurel. the lunchs are being donated to the cathedral kitchen the largest emergency food provider in the city of camden.

in pottstown, the day started with a little warmup as the girl scouts of eastern pennsylvania prepared for their day of service. these young ladies cleaned and organized the early learn center at their facility. that center serves more than a hundred children. >> very nice. they gave back in west philadelphia today as well by giving free hair cuts for the homeless. the chosen 300 outreach and worship center on lancaster avenue had a full day of volunteerism today along with the hair cuts some meals were prepared for folks in need and even some painting was done there as well. >> ♪ students at the overbrook educational center got to entertain today as part of the martin luther king jr. celebration. performers chose to dance sing or read aloud on stage. members of the community who came to watch can asked to pay a two dollars admission and that money will go back to the school and the studentsly. >> a lot happening on this holiday. time for a check of our "action news" traffic report. >> on a holiday monday let's go thrive autumn marisa in the

>> the carriers of lyme disease are more widespread than previously thought. experts have learned more about how they behave. >> ali gorman with details. >> unfortunately the population of bugs that carry the disease has exploded. they are black legged ticks and they are very small, just about the size of a pin head but they have an enormous impact. the number of lyme disease cases has tripled in the past 20 years. a new report shows that ticks are in about half of all counties in the u.s. they've been established in eastern pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware for some

time now. but they're now in states like ohio where they weren't believed to be before. scientists also know now that northern ticks are more aggressive at finding hosts than southern ones and that is another reason for the boom in cases. also today is an incredible story, it was a heartwarming reunion today a at lehigh valley health network. a plan who nearly froze to death last year came back to thank the healthcare workers who saved him. justin smith is alive today thanks to quick thinking first responders and committed doctors and nurses. last february, justin's father found him lying unconscious in a snow bank. he had been there overnight. when the temperature dipped 4 degrees below zero. >> i started shaking his head, no, no, you can't leave me. you can't leave me. >> in this particular instance the coroner was already called. >> all signs lead us to believe that he's been dead for app considerable amount of time. >> reporter: but dr. gerald coleman thought there could be

a chance. he had a team waiting. cpr was performed for hours. as they slowly started rewarming justin's body. he was airlifted to another campus and doctors used an ecmo machine to circulator and give oxygen to his blood. then his heart started beating on its own. and over the next few days, doctors say his brain went from showing no activity to normal activity. he lost his pinkies and toes but has since made a near complete recovery. >> the love there these doctors and everybody here at lehigh valley network have shown me great things. i wanted to thank every single person that had a part in this. it's been amazing. i'm here and life is good now, you know. >> reporter: many of the doctors involved they say that they felt like they were witnessing a miracle. justin did have to relearn how to use his hands and walk with no toes. he doesn't remember exactly what happened that night but

actual slope and then usually where the tubing track is so they're making snow like crazy as the temperatures are plenty cold out there this afternoon. in fact the winds continue to gust at speeds over 30 miles an hour philadelphia and wilmington as well as reading. near 30 in allentown and trenton and that continues to collapse those wind chills back into the single digits for many of us in fact five in wilmington, feels like nine philadelphia, eight in trenton, three in reading, four in allentown, five below up in the poconos and even down to the south in southern new jersey and delaware feels like 10 to 11 degrees. satellite and radar we have some clouds to the north but if you notice over the last hour or so, they're starting to fall apart right about there and that's going to be the trend. we'll have the clear sky overnight tonight and all those winds if you thinking in off of the lake bringing the lake effect snow showers into new york state. we'll continue as those winds remain up overnight tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. as we fly way to the west coast, in fact beyond the west

coast which is right here, this is a piece of energy over the open waters of the pacific and that is the ingredients to develop a storm for the east coast here later on in the week but until this energy arrives and hits the west coast, our model data cannot sample this energy properly so until that happens, late tomorrow into tomorrow night, wednesday is when we'll have a better idea of where a placement will be of that low along the east coast and what it means for rain or snow. as we look at the forecast for tonight clear cold and a biting wind 14 allentown, 16 philadelphia, 13 millville. as we head out the door tomorrow morning, late tonight temperatures will feel in the single digits to near zero and as we get into tomorrow morning, walking out the door, 8 o'clock in the morning, below zero many areas to the north and west, zero philadelphia, one in millville and even dover to wildwood between two and 3 degrees and tomorrow afternoon, the winds continue so those wind chills will stay only in the teens

during the afternoon. your five day at 5:00 forecast, windy, cold, 29 degrees for a high tomorrow. it turns cloudy on wednesday. there could be a flurry in the evening as a weak system passes but we move those temperatures up wednesday into thursday into the upper 30's thursday. pretty sunny around here and then as that storm develops over the carolinas and depending on the track we could see some snow arriving late friday but notice the high is above freezing at 36 and stays above freezing on saturday with rain and snow more than likely to occur. we'll have much more on this in that seven-day forecast coming up in the next half hour. >> thank you so much. >> thanks adam. >> we have an update on our top story. one of our big stories and that is there has been an arrest now wanted suspect john brock who is the suspect in that shooting at a homeless shelter the station house homeless facility on north broad street in north philadelphia yesterday has turned himself in to homicide investigators just moments ago. he will face murder and attempted murder charges after allegedly shooting to death

landing. you can see the camera bouncing around but we have some skaters out there at the river rink kind of braving the coldest air of the winter season not only temperature-wise but also how it feels. in fact much of the country getting in on the action with that cold dipping all the way down to the south, atlanta right now 35 degrees, raleigh 32, 24 in philadelphia, six in chicago and in the same area where this bowl effect going on wind chills really harsh and dangerous from chicago to bismarck where it's between 10 and 11 below zero. feels like nine philadelphia, one in cincinnati and this arctic air as impressive as it is and it's wedged so far south that it's going the take some time to lift away which eventually lit by the middle of the week. so as we go overnight early tomorrow morning for the rush hour windy and cold at 6:00 a.m. your temperature will be 16 degrees at 8 o'clock 18 but with there wind continuing wind chills tomorrow morning will be near zero when you head out. we'll chat about that warmup

coming in and also that will late week storm, the possibility of it in the seven-day forecast rick coming up in a little bit. >> thank you adam. residents in the tri-state area aren't the only ones feeling the frigid blast of winter weather. folks are dealing with the first snowball of the year. elizabeth hur has the details now from new york. >> reporter: it was bound to happen and now it has. the snow drought is officially over from d.c. to new york city and boston. some areas getting up to 2-inches of snow making this the first and largest snowfall of the season. near buffalo where there used to snow this latest round caught residents off guard. >> that was actually nothing here. you could see green grass on my lawn yesterday. it started yesterday afternoon around 4 o'clock and woke up to all of this this morning. >> reporter: bitter cold and snow creating a mess on the highways elsewhere leaving

some drivers stuck in a ditch, others needing a little push to get back on the road in northwest pennsylvania. >> called in snow coming here into times square an lot more on the way. >> i tell was george it's 11 degrees the wind chill out here right now. >> reporter: meanwhile freezing temperatures and icy roads in yonkers just outside new york city leaving this 14 car pileup. in minnesota a local meteorologist shows you can freeze a wet t-shirt in minutes. and it was even colder in north dakota over the weekend with a wind chill feeling like minus 50 degrees. and here in new york i'm actually wearing two scarves, two sweaters, that's all underneath this heavy coat and it is still freezing outside but fortunately forecasters say at least where we are there is relief on the way by midweek. in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news." >> and with the arrival of dangerously cold weather you

"action news" reporter john rawlins with there story. >> reporter: investigators using an excavator dug through tons of charred debris looking for business records as well as the cause of all this. just nine hours earlier this has been local landmark in bridgeton the hillcrest tavern. at about 5:00 a.m. a central alarm signaled trouble. >> found heavy volume of fire coming out of the back of the building. immediately went defensive and went to a second alarm. >> reporter: a third alarm followed. flames lit up the sky as the building parts of which

reportedly date to the 1780s was destroyed. the very cold conditions fatigued firefighters and made it difficult just to get around. >> the guys were slipping on the ice. every time the water hits the ground instant it's ice in this weather. >> reporter: ail day long patrons and employees stopped by just to take a look or snap a picture. at times it had the feeling of awake. this was a popular spot. >> i mean after a wedding, we'd all show up here after that or a funeral. this was the place to come. >> talked to all my coworkers. we were crying and saying we got to stay together. we're family, dysfunctional but we're family. >> reporter: that you say couple likened the hillcrest to a particular bar in a 1980's sitcom. >> this was our cheers and we come here quite often. going miss a lot of friends. >> place where everybody knew your name and everybody there was friendly. i mean, this was cheers. this was -- it's sad, very sad. >> reporter: the investigators are gone from the scene but the probe into the cause continues. no word if the long time owner

plans to rebuild. we were told he did not want to talk today. that he is heartbroken over the loss of the historic tavern. in bridgeton, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." >> philadelphia police are investigating a reported attack on a woman here in a septa station in germantown. the woman told police a man assaulted her 19 the queen lane train station on lawrence street and then drove off. the attack happened about midnight. detectives are working with the victim trying to put together a suspect sketch. >> all right i'm here at the "action news" big board now with the nationwide celebration of the life and legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. today people across the country and right here in the delaware valley honored his memory by giving back to their communities with a day of service. members of the first african baptist church in sharon hill were out in force for today's day of service. one group put together bags of canned goods to hand out to the community. they also handled out smoke detectors batteries and flashlights for emergency kits. younger volunteers sorted

piles of books. others grabbed a can of paint and a brush to spruce up the interior. also a group of children in mount holly new jersey spent this day of service making sure others have something to smile about. the township hosted a toy drive and card making service project at folwell elementary school. these boys and girls made cards for patients at the virtua health and rehabilitation center. the donate th donated toys willo children being treated at virtua memorial hospital. people in camden county new jersey gave back today by collecting and sorting toilet trees for people in need. this is at chews united methodist church in blackwood. clothing donations were sorted at the church today. all of the items will be taken to the neighborhood center a nonprofit that serves the camden community. and "action news" stopped by many other martin luther king jr. day of service events across the area. we'll have those coming up and of course our coverage continues on our web site at 6abc.com: monica. >> meantime rick the naacp and the black clergy of philadelphia celebrated

"doug is a strategic think compelling leader and communicator and someone who truly knows how to get the best out of his players. all of this factors are what initially at tractorred us to doug and we leave that he is the right plan to help us achieve our ultimate goal. ." former lyons led coach jim schwartz arrived at 30th street station by train about 45 minutes ago. he's expected to be named the eagles new defensive coordinator. most recently he was buffalo's defensive coordinator in 2014 and his defense allowed the fourth least points in yards in the nfl. he ran the wide nine but likely will bring the four-three back to philly and what's great about him is he has five years of head coaching experience in addition to his experience as a coordinator and position coach so he would be a great advisor for the untested pederson. and i will tell you this. based on the reaction i have

right now it still feels like 9 degrees in philadelphia, eight in trenton, five in wilmington, three in reading, five below up in the poconos and teens in southern areas from millville, dover to wildwood. as we look at satellite and radar across the eastern half of the country, again, most of the area it is quiet right now. we just have the lake effect snow machine going on with the winds drainin draining in out oe northwesterly direction and as you look to the south nothing on the horizon and nothing really big for our area as we get into tuesday, wednesday and thursday. but for tonight clear and cold with that biting wind continuing out of the west sustained 12 to 20 miles an hour, so 14 to 16 for the air temperatures tonight will feel close to zero if not below zero for some areas first thing tomorrow morning. in fact future tracker at 8:00 a.m. tuesday back to work, school for most of us. north and west feeling below zero, feeling like its goose egg in philadelphia, wilmington eight below in the poconos and even southern new jersey and delaware only a couple of degrees above zero.

and tomorrow afternoon the winds will continue to funnel out of that mainly westerly direction so it will feel like the teens area wide and finally back above zero in the poconos. it's quiet most of the week but then late friday into saturday we're chatting about this storm potential. there will be a very weak lope cominlowpressure out of texas ln the week. that low starts to strengthen as it yoslan tan the teeth south in the carolinas. the present arctic air that's in place will be exiting to the north by the end of the week so we'll have still cold air in the place but is it cold enough once this storm explodes? in fact as it pushes off into carolina it will become a pretty sizable big storm because the ocean temperatures are running above normal right now, right around 44 degrees. that can help us, that can harm us depending on if you wander rain or snow because once it explodes and develops, if it's too close to the coastline it is going to pull that very warm ocean air

inland and we will see a changeover for some of us. if it develops off the coast, there's still enough cold fair place that we get mainly snow. we're not going to really know the placement of this low until the energy enters the west coast for the models to sample the data. that comes in tomorrow night and we'll have a really great idea by wednesday morning. so your seven-day forecast exclusively here windy cold tomorrow at 29. wednesday turns cloudy. could be an evening flurry but notice that jump up in temperature into the upper 30's. sunny a few clouds thursday and then that snow arrives late on friday, high of 36 degrees. heavy snow potential here for parts of the area. the track at this point is still highly uncertain. strong wind gusts are possible and also some coastal flooding concerns and as we get into saturday rain and snow likely again depending on the track of 34 degrees. and then the sun returns as we get into the second half of the weekend. pretty nice at 38 on sunday and then seasonable at 42 degrees on monday and i actually wrote a pretty len
