"action news," delaware valley's leading news program with jim gardner. this was as big a fire as center city, philadelphia has seen an in a long time. four alarms through the apartment building at 21st and locust bringing 125 firefighters

to the scene. it may have been a cold night, but it was a very hot scene, a fire scene at this location in center city. tuesday night, and the big story on "action news" tonight is the still-active fire scene in the heart of center city, philadelphia. the location, the 2100 block of locust street. if you think it's a difficult task for firefighters to battle a blaze like this you would be right. live on the scene is "action news" reporter, what is the very latest? >> the fire crews are still onscene. walter in the building to put out hot spots that may flare up. because it is so cold, they actually put salt on the road because the water has frozen over the pavement. 33 pieces of equipment and over 100 firefighters to tame the blaze. and some of the units are now

unliveable. >> to locust street. >> in the basement. we just went outside. >> chris tells "action news" he was on the same floor the fire investigators say this four-alarm blaze started on. chopper 6 caught the jumping flames and plumes of smoke bi billowing from the apartment. >> when we were leaving the apartment it was everywhere and it was just really sick and it was on all the floors. and we were just really scared. >> it is on the roof. >> the older buildings, if there is a fire in the basement and gets in the walls it can spread to the fourth floor through the walls. we didn't know if it was two separate fires or it started in the basement and spread to the roof. >> and it went to a four-alarm fire and the inferno forced parts of the building to collapse, sending two firefighters to the hospital. the biggest challenge for 125

emergency crews on the ground, the elements. >> we have cold temperatures that make it more challenging because you have to keep moving. the longer you are in the cold you loss dexterity. >> and went a concern for those nearby. >> scare richl -- scarry. you don't know which way it will spread. >> and residents watched belongings go up in smoke picked up the pieces. >> all windows were busted and water everywhere. so it doesn't look good and we probably lost everything. >> now again firefighters will be here throughout the night. at last check, red cross is helping seven families impacted by the blaze. the two firefighters are in stable condition. reporting live in center city for channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. as if this weren't enough,

late tonight firefighters conversed on the 1600 block of lehigh avenue in north philadelphia where a rooming house went up in flames. two alarms here. this fire erupted 1:45 ago and it appears that two people were injured, including one transported to temperature university hospital and five other residents displaced. in for a frigid night. the big story is about what can happen near the end of the week. >> certainly a very cold night, look act wind chills now hovering around 10 degrees. tomorrow morning temperatures in the 20's. we have wind speeds around 12 miles per hour. so that wind chill around 10 degrees, it could be very cold. but not as harsh as today. this morning we had wind chills below zero. now this is what everyone is asking about. the storm system over the weekend. stormtracker 6 live double scan

showing low pressure moved inland, so it has a long way to go. now that it is over the lower 48 we will get access to upper-air data and that will help the computer models with the forecast. now, a lot of things still up in the air. we will be dealing with a big east coast storm. but the exact track of the storm has yet to be determined. if it hugs the coast, the heaviest snow north and west, and there could be mixing along the coast. if it is farther out to sea the heavy snow tracks southeast and also no mixing. how quickly will it intensify? how quickly or slow will it move? high pressure to the north slows the storm down, it can stall and we can get hours and hours of snow. where will the snow be located? the heaviest across the northwest or south as models have trended? one thing though i do want to take note of, the arrival time is slower. it looks like we may get through the friday evening commute

that you can say that about the last guy. chip kelly's name was not mentioned but doug pederson sold as the anti-chip. and his leadership skills a major factor in his decision. and the short list had 10 names, but in the end pederson was a unanimous choice of the search committee. pederson feels there is plenty of talent on the roster that can contend, but he is still in the early stages of evaluating the roster. he played here as a quarterback, he coached under andy reid and knows there is pressure to win in philadelphia. >> i under the culture and passion of philadelphia, i get it. i experienced that as a quarterback in 1999. i experienced that first-hand. and now coming back, i understand what it feels like to win in this city. this city hasn't won and the organization hasn't won in quite sometime.

it is my job to turn it around. >> what doug brings is an understanding of the passion of our fans in philadelphia. this wasn't a requirement for the job, but he understands how dedicated, obsessed we all are to bring a super bowl to philadelphia. >> pederson confirmed that jim schwartz will be his defensive coordinator and we will hear from him later in sports. the pederson family has to find a place to live. and not surprisingly, their old neighbors in morristown, new jersey are already welcoming them back with open arms. "action news" reporter dann cuellar was there tonight. >> our kids were thrilled. >> doug pederson and his family excited about moving back to the city. before moving to kansas city in 2011 they lived on this cul-de-sac in new jersey, oldest kid graduated from there. >> and our youngest, a freshman, is probably the most fired up because his buddies are texting

him saying we have traveling baseball spots for you, basketball spots, your high school spot ready to go. it does make the transition much easier. >> back in morristown the pederson's old neighbors and each realtor are hoping they decide to move back here. >> i texted them and said right away, i can't wait until you come back. >> did you see any houses available? >> i did. i texted her there was one in the neighborhood that just came on the market and she better hurry and call. >> katherine and her family bought the home that the pederson's lived in. >> we would love to have them back here in morristown. >> this house used to be eagles' green? >> yep. >> and his wife jeannie is lovely. i interacted with her a little more. she has three boys and shy son played baseball actually with the oldest son, drewe. and it was really fun. always exciting going on next door. >> it turns out crystal also a neighbor. >> jeanne and doug were very nice. a very nice family. we were always interacting

california home last night when he heard a crash. he called 911 and ran out to find the driver still buckled into his seat. he unhooked him and dragged him away. >> he pulled him out, and five seconds later the truck goes up. i don't look at it as heroic, i just look at it like you just had to do something. >> he was here when he needed to be here. he was here for my son. and as far as i'm concerned, he saved his life. >> the man was taken to the hospital with broken bones, but he is expected to recover. police charged him with driving under the influence. a greyhound bus driver said he was fatigued and even stopped for coffee before he was involved in a deadly crash. two women died, eight others injured when the bus flipped and landed on the median on a san jose highway this morning of the driver asked to submit a blood sample for drugs and alcohol which is routine in a situation

like this. no charges have been filed. ♪ >> republicans president call front-runner donald trump picked up a key endorsement tonight. conservative favorite sarah palin jumped trump tonight at an event in ames, iowa. and palin says she is in it to win it and trump is her candidate. >> he being the only one who is willing, the guts to talk about the issues that need to be spoking and talked about on his sleeve. the rest of some of the establishment candidates wanted to dust and hide and didn't want to talk about positions until he brought him up. >> palin john mccain's runningmate in 2008 and since then one of the most out spoken conservatives in the republican party. in the race for the democratic nomination a new poll shows bernie sanders gaining on hillary clinton. and clinton has the support of 52% of democrat and the democrat-leaning voters nationwide.

that is down from 59% in december. sanders gets 37% support and that is up from 26% last month. o'malley 2%. and 3/4 of the survey conducted before sunday night's debate. the supreme court diving into the immigration controversy. the high court said it will review whether president obama had the authority to create the deferred action for parents program. and obama established the program shielding from the program immigrants living in the u.s. illegally and let them work without the fear of being rounded up and deported. and taking up the issue in the midst of a campaign with harsh rhetoric regarding immigration and the court will decide by late june. and governor chris christie

rejected bills including a financial assistage package for atlant city. this could lead to a stay takeover of atlantic city. and christie rejected the bill for raising the age of buying tobacco products from 19 to 21. rejecting a measure prohibiting people convicted of gang crimes or making terror threats from owning a gun. and trying to steal banking customers from unexpecting customers. on city avenue and overbrook captured a suspect installing a skimming device on an a.t.m. this happened december 27. and the suspect returned with two other men a few hours later to remove the device. from our delaware news room, police and community leaders came together late today to combat crime and promote peace

season, going out on a littmb, e most snow we have gotten is a half inch. and we have three days to prepare. nothing going on here tonight except for the cold. it's another cold and windy night. wind chills right now hovering around 10 degrees. wildwood 13. philadelphia and trenton 11. reading 6. the poconos currently 3 degrees. and satellite six along with action radar showing we have clear skies here. a lot of people asking me about the snow over missouri. is this the storm we'll be dealing with friday night? that is not. at the times an upper-level feature. it's moving into a hostile environment. a lot of dry air. what this means is that system will bring us some clouds late in the day. tomorrow a pretty quiet day. a cold start to the day with temperatures in the 20's. afternoon highs, first time since sunday above freezing. 35 in philadelphia, allentown

33, cape may 35. wilmington 34. a little on the breezy side but wind chills in the upper 20's instead of the teens. it is going to feel a lot better than the past two days. but then what's on tap for friday night and saturday? this is the energy i'm tracking. it's moved ashore in the pacific northwest. what this will do is dive over texas. it will start to gather moisture from the gulf of mexico. and then it will transfer its energy to a nor'easter. doesn't develop off the coast of north carolina or farther to the south across the carolina coast. that is still up in the air. and also yet to be determined is the exact track of the storm. if it is a stronger storm and it hugs the coast, this means the heaviest snow northwest of the i-95 corridor. and it would pull in warmth from the ocean. along the coast the snow would mix over and change over to rain. however, if that storm system is a little bit weaker and tracks farther offshore, that shifts the heavy snow southeast of i95

and southersy, delaware more snow than the poconos. sharp cut-off to the northwest. the of it is early to tell but the next 24 hours getting important information. and i think will have a better grasp of the track this time tomorrow. and i will have an expected snowfall map. even despite the snow, the coast is going to take a beating. futuretracker showing 8:00 on saturday morning looking at wind gusts of near 60 miles per hour. it's a full moon this weekend, so major coastal flooding is likely at time of high tide. for philadelphia, how much snow are we talking about? three days out i am going with percentages because things could change. i am putting the highest percentage, 40% of a moderate snow. 6-12 inches. however, close behind the 35% of heavy snow, 12 to 18 inches of snow. we can see snow around philadelphia, only 10% we see

over 18 inches of snow. the weather can change as we get closer and i will keep you posted. the accuweather seven-day forecast clouds roll in tomorrow afternoon. 35 degrees. thursday the calm before the storm. mostly sunny, 36. and friday now it looks like friday evening not in the afternoon that the snow is moving in. the brunt of the storm early on saturday. whatever happens sunday, it's windy, it's dry. 38 degrees. and temperatures will be up in the 40's. 44 degrees by tuesday. we will be getting information in overnight and david murphy with an update on "action news" beginning at 4:30. a lot of lead time with the storm. and occurring on the weekend so you can be home -- not you, you will be here, but most people will be here. >> are you already making this assignment? >> i there be here. >> there is no chance it won't come? >> no chance it won't come, but there is a chance it can shift further to the north or south. but we're getting something. >> all right.
