makes. yesterday i showed you the pieces of energy and the storm system is beginning to take shape and tapping into the gulf of mexico and that is a squall line and severe weather in louisiana and a tornado is possible. that low pressure will track right across the south and then on saturday, that is when the magic happens, it becomes a nor'easter and gets captured by an upper level low and intensifies and moves slowly, as far as the timing of the snow, the good news you have time to prepare and it's moving in from 7:00 until 10:00 delaware to south jersey, between 10:00 and 1:00, the lehigh valley, between 1:00 and 4:00 and starts light and doesn't stay that way, details with adam joseph. >> there is many elements during the height of the storm as well. that is basically from 5:00 in the morning on saturday through 5:00 p.m. on saturday, when we

see snow rates between 1 to 3 inches of snow per hour, this is the heavy wet snow. you definitely want to get out every few hours to remove the snow off the sidewalks season steps and the driveway, you don't want to shovel this when all is said and done, it will be way too heavy, possible power outages, because of the consistency of the snow and wind gusts 40 to 65 miles per hour 40 near philadelphia and 65 at the shore and most roads at the height of the storm will be impassable on saturday because of how quickly it will be accumulating, expected precipitation types, dover and millville to the north and west that's wet snow and south of millville, atlantic city and dover snow mixing with rain at times and rain in southern cape may county where warm air is pushed in with a low level jet. you see the bright colors, this is strong winds in the upper atmosphere feeding the storm at

2010, snow mageddon it brought the nation's capital to a stand still and now they are preparing for a possible repeat. >> reporter: they call washington, d.c.'s mega storm of 2010 snow mag ed done this storm could be worse. >> they is predicted to be the worst storm this state has seen since snow mageddon in 2010. and governor hogan is having a week's worth of supplies on hand. >> statewide hsa has 2700 pieces of equipment that will be deployed and ready with 365,000 tons of salt, to battle the storm. >> with up to two feet of snow predicted residents are preparing for the worst and this store is forced to limit the amount of snow supplies each customer could purchase. >> the most important thing is

plans we are working on all week with the leaders of the departments and will likely have another press briefing tomorrow, to get us started off with our report i'll call on samantha phillips, the director of the office of emergency management who will talk about the status of our coordinating efforts and how we will move those efforts forward over the next couple of days. sam? >> good afternoon thank you. again i'm sam phillips director of emergency management for the city. to start with the forecast, the national weather service has been great about sharing information with us, and that is the official forecast we use for our decision making, we are in a blizzard watch, that begins friday evening and extends through sunday morning, we are forecasted for the most probable snowfall accumulation of 12 to

18 inches, certainly there could be anomalies there, the upper range could be close toward 20 and the lower is in the single digit inches. with this storm there are high winds and we are focused on the potential for power out ables and downed trees and we are doing coordination with the parks department. i want to go to the coordination at this point, we have not made official decisions but we'll make the decisions tomorrow after we get the most current forecast but we are leading to a snow electriclation but we are not make that decision until tomorrow. and we will likely activate the city's emergency place center tomorrow evening, that activation will begin as a partial activation with core

activation and public safety agencies and expant to a full saturday morning, the snowfall overnight should be relatively manageable and the height of the storm kicks in saturday morning. before i hand it over to deputy managing director karina tolson. today the governor of tom wolf made an emergency declaration to the state but that is different than the city. the governor's agency is helpful so they can free up resources if we need the help but no connection to the city of philadelphia operations. thanks. >> good afternoon, the streets department in collaboration with other agencies within the city and outside of the city began

its snow treatment operations yesterday evening at 7:00 p.m. with a brining operation, for this snow that is expected to begin tomorrow, we will have a full deployment of approximately 400 plows and 600 personnel who are plowing and salting our city streets, we are asking our citizens to join in the efforts by assisting in shoveling, shoveling their sidewalks, giving a clearance of 3 feet on the sidewalks including the curb cuts, and discourage them from putting the snow back into the streets once they have been cleared. we are working with the parking authority and there will be $5 lot parking by the parking department. there could be delays on the buses or trains, customers should check septa.org. to determine the status of their

trains and buses to get the latest updates and we do our best to maintain the route system throughout the entire city to maximize any impacts. and we'll check there to see if there are delays or cancellations for flights as a result of the snow that may be coming to us. and now i'm turning it over to the commissioner of the streets department. >> good evening i would like to talk to individuals that have thursday trash collection, we ask individuals to leave their trash at the curb, friday's collection will still be scheduled and picked up as it is planned. for those that normally have friday collection, we will not be collecting trash on saturday, we ask individuals who normally have friday trash collection to hold it on next friday, again

welcome back our storm system continues to gain strength through the gulf coast. in eastern texas this shows the strength of the storm already and is causing tornado watches, this is tapping into moisture from the gulf of mexico when it becomes a northea'easter it wilp into moisture from the atlantic and that is one of the aspects that will produce the snow for the bulk of our viewing area, this is the latest snowfall map, we tweaked it here, we moved that line farther to the south and cut the numbers for the

northern lehigh valley to 3 to 6 inches and i want to zoom into atlanta county no i want to talk about the winds first of all. they are a big aspect of the storm, it's not just the snow, the winds are howling on saturday from 5:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the evening, inland we look at wind gusts, 40 to 50 miles per hour with a heavy wet snow that could create a lot of power outages, prepare for that along the coast win gusts, 55 to 65 miles per hour. moderate to major coastal flooding, this is the biggest test for the new jersey and delaware beaches since superstorm sandy.

millville to dover, this is where you get the combination of the most snow and strongest winds to reduce the visibility. in addition to the watches, we have a coastal flood watch saturday into sunday at the times of high tide, move the cars if you are in a flood prone area, from the ocean side from long beach island to the tip of cape may and the bay locations not only in the delaware bay and river and the back bays in new jersey. as we look at double scan live radar the storm coming together now, you can see the amount of precipitation a conveyer belt of moisture being pulled out of the gulf of mexico and severe weather down there, a lot of energy and the low will track around atlanta and charlotte tomorrow and on saturday morning, will develop a new low that will become the nor'easter off the out banks of north carolina and that will throw

for the past 24 years, 6 abc proudly teamed up with local firefighters for operation save a life, it teaches folks about fire safety and provides free smoke detectors for businesses in need and annie mccormick has more from the official kickoff in east philadelphia. >> firefighters worked quickly to hand out smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. they came to collect the devices at the philadelphia fire academy, this is the 24th year of 6 abc save a life, 6 abc is proud to be part of the program

28 as clouds start to build as 10:00 from the south to the north and right around freezing during the afternoon hours and even at 7:00 in philadelphia, temperatures are below freeze and it's snow has yet to fall, and at 8:00 the first few flakes in lancaster and wilmington and while the rest of us are dry it starts to push near philadelphia and reading and trenton near midnight snowing heavily in southern new jersey and delaware, at this point the shore is all snow before the mixing pushes in, saturday at 8:30, you see the dark blue cross most of the area, that is the whiteout conditions and heavy wet snow and the rain line pushing in from the shore with the strong winds, 1:00 in the afternoon dealing with the blinding snow at times and rain down the shore in the afternoon and that continues at 5:00 and it's not until midnight on

saturday that it moves to the north and east. the snowfall totals have not changed much, the bull's-eye chester and northern delaware and it cuts off as you head to the south at the shore. mixing going over to rain, 3 to 6 inches on the front end of the storm and the foot to foot and a half areas near glassboro and hammonton and downingtown and west grove and middletown and wilmington and north of the pennsylvania turnpike the numbers drop off quickly up in allentown expecting around 6 inches of snow, at the shore brief snow and rain as the warm air comes in with the strong jeet stream, winds gusting 55 to 65 miles per hour piling up the water and moderate to major coastal flooding expected and significant beach erosion as well. there is a lot of elements to the storm and saturday is the heart of it. the exclusive accuweather
