you're inside listening to the howling winds outside, that is claymont, delaware, naamans road. youyou cannot see with the stret begins if the glass is and the wawa parking lot. the snow is blowing sideways. it is miserable to be outside. news continues to break and we have firefighters out there in brigantine, new jersey, take a look at this, they came out around 5:00 a.m. to a townhouse they found fire on the second floor. these are three story townhomes that quickly moved to other surrounding townhomes. you're taking a look at the video of the serious flames the firefighters are trying to knock down in all the snow and ice. wow, mobile 6 is out there, so you don't have to go out driving. we're taking a live look at the streets along the jersey shore. it's hard to keep the streets and highways cleared, because once the plows go through, the

snow is blown back on to the pavement. good morning, everyone, 6:00 a.m., saturday, january 23. matt o'donnell along with tamala edwards. we're bringing you the latest on the blizzard of 2016. no your eyes do not deceive you, it is not monday. it is saturday, we have live team coverage throughout the delaware valley because this is a serious blizzard. let's get you going with weather and traffic, we have karen rogers with roads and david murphy and chris sowers tracking the snowfall totals. >> reporter: chris says he likes being outside in stuff like this, i stuck my head out there, it's windy and the snow is blowing. we have the area of low pressure, the nor'easter to the south. this will be pushing past us during the day. ahead of it we're getting the strong blustery wind off the ocean and bands of snow flying up from the south, as well. some of this is very heavy. we have a break in the action, a

bit of dry air around dover and eastern shore of maryland and south jersey. this will fill in, i want to start you by telling you if you're down south and you got the wind and not seeing that much snow, don't worry it's coming back. it's not safe to go out there, because a couple of hours it will be snowing again. we have deeper shades of lavender over philadelphia and reading and allentown. these are the heavy bands of snow. within them you're getting the poorest visibility. wherever you see the purple on the map. as we track the storm that's where the visibility will be the worse. even in the areas that don't have the purple you have blowing snow and plows coming through and snow back on tops of the roads. as we take a full-screen view of this, we can get a better look at the heavy snow bands. i think i want to go in tight on the northern and western area that's a deep shade of lavender.

very rare that the snow turns up in this intense view. it is pounding, reading, fleetwood and hamburg and jenkintown you have another smaller band, but it is giving you quite a bit of problems in jenkintown and philadelphia. this is the band i stuck my head in, right there on city avenue. it's intense snow and wind. not a good time to be outside, i apologize for that image, once it lapse it will take care of that. chris sowers you're outside on city avenue, dave roberts all camera position. you were saying i love it out here, i'm like a little kid in the snow, you but this is the worst i've seen it, best advice, stay indoors, if you don't have to be out here, enjoy the comfort of your home. i was taking snow measurements.

you go to the bark -- backyard you take three areas and add them up and average them out. the wind is blowing so hard, we're getting blowing and drifting. i'm standing in the 2 to 3-foot drift right now. the drift at my side is 26 inches. snowfall totals, some of the locations are getting hammered, close to a foot of snow, for port penn. wood side, 10 inches. new castle, 9.3. waretown, 8 inches. cape maycape may courthouse, 7.. the other part of the story is the peak wind gusts. the hurricane force winds begin at 74 miles per hour. dewey beach reported a wind gust of 66 miles per hour. sussex county airport, 64.

wildwood, 48. philadelphia, so far the official number is 40 miles per hour. that's creating dangerous windchills down into the single digits right now throughout most of the area. feels like 8 degrees in philadelphia. 15 in millville. 5 in allentown and zero degrees right now in the poconos. also the other big story is the coastal flooding that drops over the next few hours, the morning high tide and evening high tide today will run anywhere from two to three and a half to potentially four feet above normal on the oceanfront. moderate to major flooding expected. offshore waves rangerring anywhere from -- ranging anywhere from 145 to 20 feet. it's a blizzard snow heavy at times, windy and cold high temperatures in time upper 20s, close to 30 degrees. that's the latest on city avenue. again, i'm seeing cars drive by, with the visibility as lousy as it is with the snow blowing back, we had the plow train

coming back in the snow is back on the roads. with the conditions as bad as it is, best advice stay at home and put on hot chocolate. if chris has not convinced you to go out on the roads, let's see if karen rogers can. >> reporter: i think i can, what's worst than being stuck on the highway. this is a look at i-95 southbound approaching island road near the airport. you don't need to get to the airport, because there's no flights out there. the snow is covering the roads, we have a disabled vehicle a plow ahead of it. penndot is on the scene, someone is standing here trying to help. it's so dangerous as people come by, they are slipping around. as we look at the camera shot, we can see the snow blowing around. 40, 06-mile an hour windy guss. the temperatures are way down, the snow is blowing it's powdery. here's another disabled vehicle, we have one here and one guy trying to leave right now as he

swerves around. i-95 northbound approaching the commodor barry bridge, a couple of headlights showing a few people stuck out there, watch this guy, now he is going the wrong way driving on i-95 trying to turn around. this is the blue route, the off ramp to saint davids. we've had a disabled vehicle stuck out here, swell, bad spot around the curve. it's very slippery. we have an accident in new jersey, 42 southbound the roads are snow-covered, speeds are down. you can barely see the ben franklin bridge. on the area bridges we have 25-mile an hour speed restrictions on the area bridges. visibility down to a quarter mile in some areas. this is mcphilly safely taking a picture from the window i like that i hope drinking hot chocolate. looking at the snow-covered

streets outside his house. stay at home if you can. we've broad somebody new to the party we're going over to delaware county to "action news" reporter, gray hall live in wane. >> reporter: good morning, tam, you've heard the story, if you can stay inside, if you don't have to be outside, it is wet and cold it is windy it is snowing it is miserable. pretty to look at from inside not outside. take a look at the streets, empty now, that was not the case earlier. we've seen people get stuck and we saw a snow mobile coming down the streets. we've seen plenty of plows, i want to take you to my handy dandy yardstick. the reading right now under 18 inches, of course the wind is blowing and packing the snow up, so the totals may change throughout the day. we have the wind gauge i want to

update there, good morning, trish. >> reporter: good morning, tam, very blustery out here and for now, the roads are clear, there's a few cars that we just saw go by and we highly discourage you from doing that. you can see how powerful the winds are. we got an update from deldot. deldot officials say the biggest problem is the wind. it is taking the snow and blowing it back on the roads after the roads have been plowed. 330 plows working statewide are working on primary roads. after they get that done who knows when that will be they can work on the local roads. as chris sowers mentioned, it is tricky to measure as the snow is blowing all over the place. here we have ten inches and over here 13 inches. we're at the wawa on naamans road in claymont. not far from the entrance to

the heavy, blowing snow makes many places unrecognizable. this video was shot on mcdade boulevard in collingdale around 4:00 a.m. this plow was doing its best to keep the streets in collingdale open. the snow is difficult for the snowplow operators. the action cam was in audubon where a plow driver with a pick up got stuck there. it happened near acme in the audubon shopping center. he spun his tires for a few minutes, but finally broke free

to finish the job to clear out the snow. let's take a look at the snow falling in the lehigh valley. this is what it looked like a short time ago at 7th and hammonton street in allentown. let's go katherine scott our reporters are tough, standing outside in the blizzard, this is ridiculous. >> reporter: what's happening. the wind gust is pushing the snow in our face, let me give you a look up broad street where so you can't see me getting hammered by the snow. inaudible. snow remove because the snow is getting pushed around the roadway. the crews have been out around the area the street department has 350 plows, 600 personnel around the city overnight plowing and salting. we ran into joe he was

delivering papers, we spoke to him about the conditions he's seen. it's terrible out here, slipping and sliding, but inquiring minds want to know and i got to get the inquirer out and the sports weekly. the roads doesn't seem like they are traveling at all. i think they were out here salting, but things are slick you ever to take your time. take your time and try to stay off the roads. as for the sidewalks they are covered in snow, people are shoveling around their businesses, but best to stay home for the time being. back to you guys. time to turn to david murphy accuweather called this you said it was coming at this time and going to be intense. storm tracker 6 live double scan, you might be scratching your head around vienldz and

cape may -- vineland, cape may, you have a break in the action. some of the stuff coming in from the ocean will fill in and by 9:00, 10:00 a.m. you'll be back in the thick of it. some of of you are in the thick of it. you can see the pinks and purples, there's one in norristown and lansdale and warminster that's picking up the heavy banding of snow. wherever you see the purple as you follow throughout the storm that's where the visibility is at the worst. that's the heaviest snow. of course all day long we're expecting strong wind gusts that is blowing the stuff sideways and making visibility a problem. pottstown you're getting out from under that. birdsboro, that's a problem, boyertown. the wide view shows the lull down the shore mixing along the

coast and southern delaware, but, again, this will all again filter through. i want to go down toward baltimore, you can see lightning bolts, that sometimes surprises you, sometimes when when you gee pounding snow you can get thunder snow. that's what you have in ballot more -- baltimore, i think we'll have it in gettysburg and lancaster, and lebanon, west of reading you have thunder snow out there. that's possible wherever you get heavy snow bands today. sky6 live hd showing strong blustery winds at 30 to 40 miles per hour. at the shore, up to 60 miles per hour or more. in the sustained winds in philadelphia right now are 25. that's not a gust, that's sustained none stop wind. that's why you can see all our

reporter are saying stay in. 25 degrees, the windchill is 9. not a safe morning out there, it won't be a safe day ahead. there's the wide view of the storm. it is rotating as the low gets past us. the backside snow will be wrapping back in. future tracker 6 showing it to you, between now and until 9:00. the lull is possible down south, everybody else getting hammered pretty good. we roll through the rest of the morning until 2:00 we're all seeing heavy snow. up to 6:00 a lot of heavy bands out there. we might break apart a little bit by 6 to 11:00 p.m. by 11:00 p.m. the tail end is winding down. looks like the whole thing will make a quick exit off the coast by 2:00 a.m. this morning. we're looking at immense snowfall amounts 18 to 24 inches in philadelphia. if we get the 24-inch snowfall in philadelphia. it's significant snow down to

millville and quakertown. that will rank high on the scale. this is the list of the top four snowfalls in philadelphia. the blizzard of 96 leading the pack. if we get 24 inches we'll be number 3. we're going for a high of 30, snow, winds, blizzard conditions for much day. a good day to stay inside, watch "action news" maybe get a puzzle going on the dining room table. sunny tomorrow, snow is gone by sunday morning, we have drifterring snow, be careful shoveling tomorrow, it's going to be a lot of snow, some of it could be heavy, cold, 34 degrees, i have a concern when we get heavy snow people strain their back and giving themselves heart problems. take a lot of breaks when you're shoving the snow tomorrow. notice the overnight lows it's a

reminding you it is a good idea to stay in. it is on north broad approaching spring garden. the roads have a snow pack down. we've seen plows out, but with the wind it's blowing snow back on the roads, making it treacherous if you're trying to to go somewhere. karen there will not be a lull today, wait until this afternoon to do something, you you -- uh-huh. >> reporter: i-95 northbound approaching 332 in bucks county. police responding to an accident scene. visibility down to .3 of a mile. as we switch the camera view here's another shot. look at the blowing snow, 202 southbound at horsham road. you can see the snow blowing out completely over the road. i'm not seeing any pavement on

any of the cameras i'm looking at. the snow is powdery and light. the windy gusts 41. 48 in wilmington. when you have the light snow falling steadily it's all over the roads. we have flashing lights on 42 southbound in blackwood. be careful as you're traveling. the airport quiet there, at the airport, stay home if you can here, we've been looking around the region and people have been on twitter and facebook so this one is telling me havertown is they have lots of snow town. and scott sent us this picture in allentown. sandy. good morning, it is saturday, i'm matt o'donnell along with tamala edwards. let's get to our team coverage. we have karen rogers taking a look at the roads. we have team coverage with our meteorologists david murphy and chris sowers both tracking the massive storm. david we'll start with you. >> reporter: massive is the word. storm tracker 6 live double scan, you can see the area off the coast has begun to develop and transferring and passing us by all day today. it's strong enough we're getting the winds curling in from the north-northeast. the gusts down the shore have been up to 65 miles per hour and 66 in dewey beach, delaware. as the winds come in over land. they die down a little bit, starting at 65 it's easy to get a wind gust apt 30 to 40 miles per hour. you add in the heavy bands charging in from the coast it creates a dangerous situation with low visibility and pounding snow.

storm tracker 6 live double scan, once again he have a lightning indicator on storm tracker 6 live, one of the many things that this radar does for us. that may make you scramble -- scratch your head a little bit, that's thunder snow. you get an updraft that creates a mini burst of thunder and lightning that's west of harrisburg and reading. looks like the snow is dieing down a little bit. we have purple up in the northern and western suburbs moving away from places like reading. a little bit more in through here, wherever you see the lavender shade on radar. there's a little bit in lancaster county, as well. that's the heaviest snow. there's more east in ocean county that's coming back toward the northwest. wherever you get the purple that's the heaviest band of snow and the lowest visibility variety. as we take a quick look at the full screen we'll go in closer on the area down to the south.

we're seeing a break in the action and so you know you're in parts of cape may county and salem county all the way up into gloucester county you're seeing the snow die down, you might be thinking is it over? well it's not. all the snow to the west of us still has to charge in from the west. it's going to be filling in as we go over the next couple of hours and really overall save this little lull down south, the rest of the area will spend the majority of the day in snow and no breaks in sight. chris sowers is out on the terrace. chris it's been a cold one and you've been exercising it -- experiencing it full force. >> reporter: the winds are blowing at ho to 50 miles per hour. it's -- at 40 to 50 miles per hour. we can pan the camera to the left, this is the reason why we don't want folks on the roads right now. this guy is stuck, he is on the shoulder now, he is trying to

get going again, so the cars behind him are having a difficult time passing. as the plows come through if he is not out of the way they will plow him in. this is part of the region we want everybody to stay home and enjoy the blizzard from the comfort of your warm home. the roads are lousy, the plows come out and clear the roads and the winds push the roads back on on -- push the snow back on the roads. the snow will continue through tonight and wind down between midnight and 3:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. blizzard conditions means we'll experience wind gusts over 35 miles per hour with reduced visibility to less than a quarter of a mile to 3 consecutive hours that's the technical points for the blizzards. we've been out here for 20

minutes or so, and and i can't see a think. monmouth township, 9.5. sinking spring, 9.2. it's snowing so hard i can't see the graphic. in greeneville, delaware we're up to 8 inches in snow. wind gusts as david murphy mentioned have 40 to 06 miles per hour along the coast. 17 degrees in millville. day planner looks like, snow, heavy at times throughout the day. high temperatures 28 to 32 degrees given your location. snowy and windy. winds gusing 40 to of -- gusting 40 to 60 miles per hour.

when i come back we'll talk about the snowfall totals and warmup in the seven day. that's in just a bit. let's go over to karen rogers, you've been saying stay off the roads you have exampleses of what happens when people get out there anyway. >> reporter: looks like a whiteout when you look out here. we've been talking about visibility quarter-mile-an-hour. wind gusts 40 miles per hour. this is hard to see 30 bypass route 100. we see the flashing lights, you can see the flashing lights on route 30. we want to switch the camera view and show you i-95. this is a better shot to see the road conditions under the streetlight. you can see how the snowfall blowing around the roads completely covering i-95 we saw several disabled vehicles near the area. looking bad right now. our latest disabled tractor-trailer, the vine street expressway westbound near the

schuylkill expressway blocking the right lane, disabled tractor-trailer people moving so slowly. we've seen a lot of people getting stuck on the hills of the highways trying to to go. this is 42 everybody is moving cautiously northbound at creek road. southbound we had an accident on the ramp that has cleared. i saw a disabled vehicle a minute ago, but it moved. you can' t see the road surface. ben franklin bridge 25-mile an hour speed restrictions. reducing the speeds to 25 miles per hour. you have the slick conditions and high winds causing an issue. we're hearing from all of you out there hopefully taking pictures looking out your back door. mere margo looking at zero visibility out here, a pretty scene if you're inside, matt and tam. let's take a ride on mobile 6, broad street heading to the

temple university campus avenue of the arts. looks like we're on the campus, liacouras are a -- liacouras center, snowplow operators are out there, it's hard to deep up with the snow as it falls down heavily. let's go over to gray hall in king of prussia, montgomery county with the latest he is seeing there. good morning, gray. >> reporter: good morning, tam, the story is pretty much the same, it is winds and cold and snowing. earlier when you came to me, i told you that the wind speeds were ten to 1 miles per hour. i want to give you the anemometer temperature reading 15 degrees. take a look behind me, you can see the roads, there are people braving the blizzard we talked

to a woman who said she almost ran out of gallons. ran out of gas. we talked to snowplow operators. where have you been? it's a nightmare, i've been doing it for 30 years. the wind is killing everything. it's the worst i've seen. the wind, that's what makes it bad. . back out live, indeed the wind is a killer. so we have our handy-dandy 6abc yardstick. we are reading under 18 inches off 202 in king of prussia. again i know we sound like a broken record if you don't have to go outside, stay inside stay warm stay safe. gray hall channel 6 "action news." back to you guys. let's take a live look at

the jersey shore, that's one of the many stories we're following for you, that's cape may, new jersey. not many people out there, that's good because they are worried about coastal flooding. high tide in atlantic city is 3 minutes it will spill along the coastline and get into cape may. we're hoping that nothing bad happens with that. we're monitoring that, if down the jersey shore, get your cars to higher ground, hopefully you've turn that because we've been warning you about that all week. let's go to center city, katherine scott is there. we have a lot of snow and a lot of wind. >> reporter: we have had a lot of snow and wind. recently it feels like a lull there, the snow is coming down, you can feel the wind, but not as heavy as earlier. let me give you the latest measurement, i can't promise the integrity of the sample sizes in

welcome back taking a live look sky6 live hd looking into cape may, new jersey, usually that walkway is covered with pedestrians getting out for their morning walk, not this morning, everybody hunkered down as we deal with the blizzard.

they are worried about beach erosion, atlantic city has outages between wildwood and brigantine, 26,000 residents are without power. the largest number in avalon and tuckerton. one car we see going on. i mentioned beach erosion, they are concerned about flooding as all the wind and rain comes in. trish hartman live in claymont, delaware, trish i have some good news for you, tracking storm tracker 6 live radar looks like a lull is come your way in maybe five or ten minutes. >> reporter: that's sounds fantastic, we're measure about 1 mile an hour windy gusts, 16, 20, we've been seeing windy gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour. a lull is welcome here in claymont, delaware. we're on naamans road off the exit for i-95.

deldot said the big issue is the wind. after they plow the roads. snow is blowing back on. i was talking to a plow truck driver he said he is driving a four wheel drive vehicle, he said he was sliding through the intersections. the plow can't keep up with it, the wind is blowing the snow back on. level one driving warning in effect meaning if you don't have been on the roads don't do it. measurements are all over the place because the wind is blowing the snow around, we have 11 inches on "action news" measuring stick. varied measurements all over the place. deldot said they have 330 allows plows statewide tackling the roads. if you don't have to be on the roads i suggest you stay inside and stay safe. live in claymont, delaware, trish hartman channel 6 "action news." >> whoever is in claymont, delaware, they may be in for a

and west, western poconos getting into that kind of action. ocean county and parts of burlington county, you can see a heavy band coming in. the rain off the coast will encounter the cold air over land and turn to snow. the heavy rain will be more heavy snow pushing in. we'll be in and out of these heavy bands throughout the day. we have nasty conditions on i-95 not much traffic out there, that's good this is not a day to be outside to transverse the area. even if the local road looks like it's getting plowed you get a thrump -- thump of heavy snow and winds blowing snow back on the roads. not a good day to be on the roads. 21 in allentown. 25 in philadelphia. 25 in wilmington. the windchills are in the single digits right now, the winds are strong. snowfall numbers are coming in fast and furious.
