7:12 am
it's going to be a long day. nora that hurts my heart, it's going to be a long day. we have power outages, atlantic city electric says there are 26,449 residents without power between wildwood and brigantine. some of us in extreme areas south and south jersey and in experiencing a lull in the snow, but not the winds. taking live look at independence mall from old city camera. that camera is way high up, so it is shaking more than it would be at the surface. the snow may stop for some people out there, but don't think it's over, it will continue and turn back on throughout the day into sunday morning. let's turn to the people who are doing everything they can to take care of roads. we have gene from benefit to -- penndot. gene we're hearing there's a little bit of a lull that will

is helping the plows get the roads cleared. it does help, but the amount of snow that has fallen, it's going to be difficult. we have 450 trucks on the highway. it's a big plowing operation right now but between the snow falling and the snow blowing back on the roads, it's a difficult situation. our crews are doing the best they can, it's a difficult storm. gene speak directly into the phone we're having trouble hearing you. you have to give the plow operators a break not much in terms of snow that will complicate matters for you, as well. it will, matt, we're going on 12 hour shifts, we're doing the best we can, operators have to extend that a little bit, up to 16 hours, we need the keep our drivers and contractors.
7:14 am
it is going to be a long separation, the snow expected to fall through early sunday morning. this will likely go into monday, because we have to get the roads ready for monday morning rush hour. the sun will be out for parts of the day which will aid us in getting down to the pavement. you remind people number one if they can, stay in, but if there's an emergency reason to get out, there's a lot of trucks on the roads, there are things they should do to make sure the plows do their job well. thank you for mentioning that. we request that you give the plow operators 6 car lengths behind. do not pass them. the best place to be in the snowstorm if you have to travel get behind the plow truck because it's clearing a path in front of you, stay an after

distance behind the truck. that's the best place to be. don't pass it, take your time. it's very difficult to plow, but if you must, you want to make sure your vehicle is equipped to drive in these types of weather conditions and make sure you have enough material in your vehicle should you become stranded or stuck your cell phone is charged, you ever a blanket all the necessary items you need just in case something may happen where you are stuck on the roadway. gene it's going to be a rough day, everyone knows that, you've got great plow operators out there, we thank them for all the work they do. thanks, gene from benefit to the. amaroso bread truck got stuck in the snow early this morning. the action cam was on maryland

7:18 am
we have new jersey governor chris characterize joining us on the phone on the conditions in the garden state. what are you hearing and seeing out there. >> reporter: what we're hearing and seeing is what we expected in the southern part of the state and the area where your viewers are. we'll see 6 along the coast, 24 inches inlands. the roads while snow covered passable in the southern part of the state. we are urging people to stay inside. keep roads open for emergency vehicles and the plows to get through unless it's absolutely necessary for you to drive please don't. what we're seeing in the southern part of the state we're seeing power outages, we have about 17,000 power outages so far in the southern part of the state. the bulk of those are in cape may county. 15,000 of the 17,000 are in cape
7:19 am
may county, are scattered outages, 3,000 in ocean county. governor you're back in new jersey you were in new hampshire with the primary coming up, you said a couple of days ago if i need to be in new jersey, i'm coming, some people wish you said i'm going i know it's going to be bad. do you wish you said that a couple of days ago. >> reporter: no, i'm monitoring a forecast, your weather folks don't like to hear this, but every now and then the forecast is not on the button. we were waiting to see, when i got the last forecast it was clear this was going to be a serious storm in the state, i made plans to leave new hampshire i was here in new jersey before the first snowflake hit the ground anywhere in our state. no, i make the decisions when i have enough information to make
7:20 am
them, not when the media asks me to make them. governor coastal flooding could be a concern, people telling us this could be the biggest test since sandy. what are your thoughts, what are your sense about dealing with beach erosion and coastal flooding. >> reporter: we have not experienced any coastal flooding yet. we're monitoring it, we entered the first high tide cycle in the southern part of the state about a half-hour ago in atlantic county. it's something to keep our eye on in the next 240 hours or so. if he with get flooding we expect it to be street flooding and not have to evacuate anyone for flooding purpose. we'll experience beach erosion, we'll have to deal with that with the army corps of engineers and the post sandy work they need doing in the state in the aftermath of the storm. we are very well prepared.
7:21 am
we know there is going to be street flooding, but the folks at the jersey shore are used to that with any type of storm. this one will not give them the based on on the current forecast and motels they will be street flooding and nothing to necessary at a time evacuations based on on the information we have now. governor it will be warmer and freeze again overnight throughout the coming week, does that concern you, because we'll have a lot of snow on the ground it could melt and freeze and get treacherous. >> reporter: listen, that's why we started our instruction this past thursday in brining the roadways, that helps to prepare them to clear as much snow off them as we come. while we have melting and refreesing we have 228,000 tons of salt in the state. we'll be diligent about keeping the roads salted.
7:22 am
over has to drive carefully as we go through the week. trying to predict now, again, as i said before, trying to predict now what well be confronting when the workweek starts monday is risky. we'll see what it looks like, as for today we're seeing heavy snow everywhere except on the coast. we're getting the roadways cleared and they are passable, but i say to everybody in the southern part of my state stay home, do not go out on the roads. it makes no sense to do that it will impede the plows and the passage of emergency vehicles that need them. governor you've been through 17 snow emergencies in your year as governor, so far you've seen a lot of these, how does this shape up to you? >> reporter: fairly average to tell you the truth. so far the snow accumulations will be a little bit larger than normal.
7:23 am
but we're ready because of 17 snow emergencies, myself even my cabinet are fairly ready to deal with these things. the things that concern me at at this time of the year are the power outages. it's cold and people need to be kept warm. if anyone has a power outage shelter with family and friends who have power. if you don't have family and friends close we have shelters open in every county across the state ready to accept people who need to be kept warm. the things that concerns me about this, the high winds the likelihood of significant power outages, especially in the late january time that means it's going to be cold and we want people to be warm and not injured because of cold weather, stay in a place that can be kept warm. governor chris christie back in new jersey, thanks for
