the blizzard of 2016 is over, but the bigout is beginning. we may be seeing mounds of snow is for quite sometime. it was a tough job with drivers getting stuck, and he shore a new twist on tidal

flooding, some of the water froze overnight. we have meteorologist chris sowers at the "action news" big board, david murphy outside, everybody breathing a sigh of relief with the blizzard behind us. >> reporter: the big thing is cleaning everything up. let's get the streets and sidewalks cleaned. we knew this was going to be a big storm, historic snowfall amounts for parts of the area. blizzard of 2016. allentown received 3 1.9 inches. the largest snowfall for the lehigh valley. philadelphia, 22.4 inches, the fourth largest storm in the city of brotherly love. some of the areas picked up an entire season's worth of snow with the one storm. we cruise the blizzard of 96 as the benchmark. blizzard of 96 dropped

37.9 inches. in allentown this was a bigger storm than the blizzard of 96. in the lehigh valley 29.5 inches. with this storm they saw 3 1.9. baltimore, here's another comparison, blizzard of 96, 22.5 inches. this storm dropped 29.2 and dulles received 30 inches of snow, as well. the center of the circulation is offshore taking the winds and rough seas along with it. here's the jersey shoreline. we have ten foot breakers on the beaches. the biggest wave heights are out to sea, 20 to 25-foot waves. the winds are pulling away, the waves are pulling away. the winds calmed down five to ten miles per hour oift -- out of the northwest, the flooding has calmed down, as well.

let's bring in meteorologist david murphy who is outside. >> reporter: yeah, things have improved over yesterday, we're below freezing at 29 degrees in philadelphia. 27 in allentown. 25 in wilmington, and 30 in trenton. ascertain even though -- and even though the winds have died down they are noticeable and we have windchills in the teens including philadelphia, 18 in allentown and 16 in reading and 12 in wilmington. as you head out to do the shoveling or playing in the snow make sure you bundle up in all the layers and extra gear. take it easy if you're still getting out there during the second round of shoveling. yesterday we were saying trying to do it all at once is not a good idea. most of the spots are looking anywhere from a foot to two feet on the grounds, in some cases a bit more. be careful of straining your

back and having a problem with your heart. we had one sad story with an elderly gentleman who was shoveling and suffered a fatal heart attack. be careful, slow breaks important. i want to put out there, too, when you walk the dog you get back there may be salt on the paws, they may lick the salad get warm water and wash off the paws. sunshine and in the post mode of the storm at this point. nice to see the sun. philadelphia mayor jim kenny said philadelphia offices will be open for business. he added that the city has a lot of plowing to do to get philadelphia back to semblance of normal. the folks are soldiers in the war against mother nature. they were not backing down. they were not hesitating they were taking 15 minute cat naps

and back on the trucks and plows, hauling salt. mayor kenny reminded people not to shovel snow out in the streets and do not walk in the streets because cars on the slick roads pose a danger. septa is working this noon to resume all service. the broad street line is working. regional rails remain spended with the exception of the airport line which is running on an hourly schedule. the action cam was at the 69th street upper darby terminal. a few commuters were using the terminal. "action news" reporter trish hartman has been outside live with the latest on this, trish, how is it out there? >> reporter: it is nice and sunny, but snow is everywhere.

we're at broad and ellsworth. it's plowed, but it's slippery. snow is everywhere. if you look in the parking lot there's snow mountains this is almost as tall as i am. if you look down ellsworth street the sidewalk is shoveled, but there's piles of snow from the plows blocking the cars. many are spending the morning digging out of the snow. residents and city officials say it will take time to get back to normal. bill boyle and augie have a snow removal system. they need been working since friday they have had time to work out the kinks. all night friday night late in the morning, it's crazy. >> reporter: bill owns a maintenance company he said they will work all day to clear nine properties in the city. the sun is a big factor for us, once we get it down to the

concrete. the sun melts whatever is there and works with the salt. >> reporter: city officials urge people who are digging out not to throw snow back in the street. residents say because there's so much snow it's a challenge to figure out where to put it all. a lot of it piled up against my house and it is other side of the car. >> reporter: more streets were plowed in early sunday morning, until one brave truck came through and made his own path. for those venturing out on foot, the snow banks were challenging. it's tiring the snow is everywhere. >> reporter: if walking is a challenge and someone can pull you, you can always catch a ride. city officials say the plowing and salting will be focused on it is primary and secondary streets. so it may take a little while to

get to the side streets. mobile 6 has been on the roads all morning checking conditions, live right now in norristown where there's a whole lot of snow still to clear, the plow drivers have their work cut out for them. sky6 live hd is taking a live look at the philadelphia international airport. crews, of course, have been bills all day with huge snowplows to clear out the runways. the airport is getting slowly back to business. it will take time after all -- it will take time to catch up, after all travel wag canceled yesterday. call 1-800-phl-gate for information. lbi there are houses hanging over the ocean. in the ocean city the beach has suffered serious erosion undoing the beach replenishment project last year. let's talk about the flooding in town which hopefully resolve itself today. flooding continue two hours after high tide. some areas were under water, the flooding today was nothing like yesterday. we had to get our cars out of here, i was shoveling snow all night long. >> reporter: over at the beach waves are pounding the shoreline and taking a toll. these are cliffs of four, five feet chewed out from the dunes on 5th street. a brand new snow fence was ripped down and a recent part of the beach replenished by the army core of engineers has been damaged.

>> i stood beyond that the jetty was almost covered you could walk around the jetty at low tide. >> reporter: the violent waves were an attraction of surfers, but one said it was work to catch one in the ocean today. i was cruising down the line and i hit the rip right there, the leash smashed off, i landed on the rocks way down there. >> reporter: back live, you heard that man say you could walk out around the jetty at low tide that doesn't look to be the case now, wild waivings are pounding the shoreline right now. now that the storm is passed, the sun is out and folks are on the boardwalk, everybody wants to take a look at the pounding surf. live in ocean city, nora muchanic channel 6 "action news." it's a lot of to take in, nora, that thank you. new jersey governor chris christie has said people are free to travel in the state. new jersey transit resumes

service in the hour. the governor credited state workers with doing a suburb job and --reat job and making it safe. you're free to go out and go to church the supermarket, sporting efforts hockey games or basketball games, if the games are on go do it. if you don't have to be out there's no reason to go out. 90% of households without power in cape may county should have their heat and lights back on by the end of the day. 18,000 people are without power due to the blizzard that's up from earlier. wildwood and stone harbor are the trouble spots. noon crews are making progress in clearing the roads in the state of delaware, governor jack markell has lord the driving restrictions to level one. you must continue to stay off

the roads unless it is absolutely necessary. the governor says that most of the primary roads in new castle and kent counties were cleared by this morning and crews have started working on the secondary roads. there's a lot of snow to dig out in the lehigh valley. annie mccormick has been there all morning. she joins us live with a progress report. annie, what's the latest out >> reporter: gray in the lehigh valley they received a record amount of snow. take a look in the neighborhoods at glenwood and washington. you can see cars are still covered and the streets are narrow. even when they are able to plow the streets there's not a lot of places for the snow to go. here's video of other neighborhoods we've been to in salisbury township where neighbors are helping each other dig out so they can get back to normal.

they are saying there are so many snow blowers used on the street they are helping each other make runs to the gas station. in salisbury township some of the streets were not plowed because plow trucks could not get out of there. some of the residents are not able to get out of the their driveways. it's hard for dogs to get out and do their business. they need stuck in the house all weekend. some of the major shopping centers are having plows come through to clear out their streets. we talk to a man who has a 12-man crew heavy equipment to get the job done. he is tired. we've been here since 10:00 p.m. friday night, until it's said and done we'll have 6 to 670 hours total. >> reporter: have you slept? no, i'm going home in two hours to sleep. >> reporter: how much coffee have you had? plenty.

>> reporter: that's a lot of coffee. i can tell you we got in here hours ago 4:00 5:00 a.m. the major roads were a problem they are deterrently making progress in the allentown area. reporting live in allentown, annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." thanks for the update. speaking of the roads, karen rogers has been watching the roads on this post blizzard sunday. what's going going on karen. >> reporter: we've been talking about traffic for two days and i got my car stuck trying to get out of the garage. the shot says it all, you can see the blacktop, this is route 100 at commerce drive, imagine all of this. this turning to ice in the overnights hours when the temperature dips top 15 degrees. that will be the problem tomorrow. looking live and clear on the vine street expressway near i-95 no problems right there. this is i-95 the snow in the median, the main roads they did

a great job getting out there. the secondary roads we can't say smump on that. -- as much on that. lots of updates with mass transit. broad street frankford market line serveing the area continually. regional rails no service today, we'll be on bright and early to help you out with that. trollies are resuming 101 is running 102 later today. we've had lots of pictures from people here, merchantville street over a foot of snow on the local roads. just to give you an idea not all the roads are looking as good as the highways. important that we're getting the viewer photos and

shoveling. take your tame -- take your time and take frequent breaks. double scan live we're crystal clear we hardly have a cloud in the sky at this point. we continue to see the winds out of the northwest as the storm exits the region. snow totals, allentown, 39.1 inches -- 31.9 inches. east coventry 25. airport 22.4. for philadelphia this was the 4th largest snowstorm ever in the city's history behind the blizzard of 96. this was the same year december 609 and -- of 09 and 2010. this ranks fourth behind those.

we don't see another huge storm like that down the line. the pattern is getting ready to change. even though the testers will be cold this week we -- temperatures will be cold this week we'll see a west to east windy that means a big warmup. 40s and 50s. allentown, 27. philadelphia, 29. millville, 30. trenton, 30. poconos cold, 22 windchill of ten. feels like 16 in reading, 13 in lancaster. 12 in wilmington. 17 degrees this afternoon in philadelphia. satellite and radar, the entire eastern seaboard unlike yesterday crystal clear will keep all these clouds to the west across the great lake states as the low continues to exit stage right pull off the coast. it's a problem for the canadian maritimes. feeling a little bit of a breeze, but there's nothing going on the high plains and great lake states it's clear. it's dry for the next five to seven days.

could be a pop up rain shower tuesday afternoon, that's about it. future tracker. these windchills, feels like 24 in philadelphia. low 20s north and west. in the evening hours, as the numbers drop off. windchills drop off, as well. 15 in allentown, 18 in wilmington. bundle up in layers tomorrow, it will feel like 3 in lancaster, teens for everybody else. today, sun, 24 degrees. bone-chilling cold overnight tonight. partly cloudy, ten degrees for outlying suburbs. 15 for center city. you'll see this in a second in the seven-day forecast. daytime highs above freezing, nighttime lows below freezing, we'll see melting refreeze that means a lot of black ice and icy patches and slick spots.

afternoon post-blizzard. 12:25, 29 degrees, sky6 live hd looking live at cape may, new jersey, many power outages in cape may county. govern governor chris christie said 90% of them will be restored by the end of the day. 70 residents of a virginia apartment complex are staying at a firehouse after the roof collapsed under the weight of several feet of snow. it happened at 12:30 a.m. the combination of high winds and heavy snow brought down a gas station canopy in petersberg

they were happy after the bus got rolling again. they and five hundred other vehicles were stranded for more than 24 hours out on the turnpike in somerset county. the girls tweeted pictures while stranded in the snow. we talked to a gymnast and here is what she had to tell us. some girls stretched their legs, some of the girls got study time in. they are glad they are heading home. the girls were supposed to attend a mete at the university of pittsburgh. the duquesne basketball team got moving around the same time. another half-hour of "action news" is just ahead with more on the digout from the blizzard of 2016. we'll have chester and other communities and we'll

and david murphy with the latest from accuweather with just about everyone else in the area. >> reporter: good afternoon, nydia. it's time for the big clean up around the delaware valley. snowfall totals were ridiculous in some areas, 3 1.9 inches in allentown. hopewell, 23 inches. haddonfield, 18. toms river 17. williams town 14 1/2. new castle 16.1. wood side 15 1/2. talleyville 14.2. hockessin 12.2. pennsylvania received the most snow from the storm system within our viewing area. 28 in malvern. is also burr, 27.4. king of prussia, 26.1. broomall, 22.4, 22.4 philadelphia international airport. the fourth largest snowstorm for

philadelphia. on top of that we had gusty winds. if this was a summer storm it would have taken on a name. it would be a hurricane. bayville winds, 72. tuckerton, 6. ocean city, 63. fortescue, 55 miles per hour. it was not just the snow, but the winds combined creating terrible conditions. let's bring in david murphy he'll walk you through the rest of the day. >> reporter: it's not a great day, but the winds have died down significantly. 29 in philadelphia. 27 in allentown. 25 in reading. 30 in trenton and i am surveying the map not eeg anybody over freezing just yet. there's a wind blowing not as strong as yesterday, but in the teens at times that's dropping the windchill in philadelphia down to 17 right now and you

really hunch your shoulders when the winds kick up a bit. 12-degree windchill in wilmington. we had a foot or more of snow that drifted through higher amounts. be careful if you're shoveling, back strain and strain on the heart. get some friends to help you out. take it slow and lots 6 breaks. it's breezy and cold, the kids should take warm breaks if they feel their fingerings tingle a little bit. outside on the terrace, we have bright sunshine and less wind no more snow falling dress appropriately if you're heading out. just about everyone else in the area people in malvern have a lot of shoveling to do today. action cam was in the chester

county town, one man was clearing a sketch of sidewalks. tom wolf said the state will do a review on how to deal with the storms on the pennsylvania turnpike to avoid the back up on friday night. five hundred carl's ended up stranded by pittsburgh. the governor was asked if the state was to blame. i think to the extent there were people who experienced hardship, we need to figure out how to do a better job and that's one of the things we'll do. statewide, we did a good job, but there's no question that for the people trapped between somerset and bedford on the turnpike, that was something that we are sorry that happened. >> reporter: now, it went tractor trailers are still stuck.

the turnpike commission expects to remove the rigs sometime today. progress has been made in clearing the roads in delaware. governor jack markell lord the driving restrictions in the first state to a level one. it's urging people to stay off the roads and let the crews continue their work. we're able to insure that primary roads were generally cleared by this morning and that plows have been starting to move into into secondary roads in newscastle and kent counties. the governor said the combination of sun and salt will help to melt the snow quicker. more than a foot of snow fell in the state of delaware during the storm. right now septa service is continuing i. broad street line is at fern rock and bus service will resume on route by route basis stay with "action news" an 6abc.com

for the very latest. even a simple trip can get complicated and challenging today. a pennsylvania state trooper helped a taxi driver who was stuck on city avenue near monument avenue. "actionif you have to get out te mindful it is slippery and there are many side roads untreated. let's look at the cleanup work in south philadelphia. speaking of the side roads, trish hartman has been there all morning long and seeing progress throughout the day. >> reporter: that's right it's a slow go whether you're driving or walking, but the progress is happening. if you take a look down ellsworth street people are making their way down the sidewalk there's a lot of shoveling going on, people are clearing their walks and dig out their cars. ellsworth street while it is snow covered in most spots, it

is plowed. that's not the case for many of the side streets in south philadelphia. take a look at the video we shot on moore street. it was completely plowed in at broad with several inches of snow and a massive snow bank, a pick up truck came along and got momentum and busted through the snow bank. folks are trying to figure out where you to put all the snow. there's a lot of snow, it's going to be a while before people dig out and go. the street is snow covered i don't know what else they can do, they can't get that close to the ground with the plow, they are doing what they can. now, city officials are urging residents as you're shoveling and cleaning up your cars do not throw the snow back on the streets making it difficult to keep the streets clear. city crews are working on the

primary and secondary roads first and then they get to the smaller streets. we're seeing city crews working on broad street with excavators trying to get the snow banks off the roads. they are salting own plowing throughout the day to get things moving again. trish hartman channel 6 "action news." let's get an update on the flooding at the new jersey shore with nora muchanic live in ocean city. nora not like what we saw yesterday. >> reporter: no, no, things have cleaned up a lot, the sun is out, which is fabulous, the wind is not as hard, but i will tell you what, this area along 5th street suffered serious beach erosion. how could you not when you're dealing with the waves of they are roaring today the wind and the waves have eaten away at the beaches here. over at the beach waves are still pounding the shoreline and taking a toll. these are cliffs of four, five

feet chewed from the dunes on 5th street. a brand new snow fence was ripped down and a significant part of beach recently replenished by the army core of engineers was washed away. that out fall pipe was covered completely. i stood beyond there, the jetty was the covered you could walk around the jetty at low tide. >> reporter: flooding continued in ocean city two hours after high tide. even though some areas were still under water, the flooding was nothing like yesterday. we had to get all our cars out of here, i was shoveling snow all night long. i am hoping it goes down soon. >> reporter: the waves are an an attraction to surfers one we talked to said it was work to catch a ride in the ocean today. i came cruising down the line and i hit the rip right there and the leash snapped off i landed on the rocks way down

there. >> reporter: back live, now, you can see the surfers out in the beach off 5th street trying to make their way out to the where the waves are breaking. they say the under tow and the rip currents are incredible. they are willing to rough it out there, it hadn't stopped them from going in. at the beach it's about mopping up. it's about evaluating the damage. a lot of shore attorneys like ocean city will have serious beach erosion to deal with, they have to figure out what to do and how to replenish the beaches eaten away by the weekend storm. nora muchanic channel 6 "action news." now the lehigh valley got a record amount of snow, "action news" reporter, annie mccormick is live in allentown, 3 1.9 inches fell there, right, annie? >> reporter: they have got a record amount of snow, 31.9

inches. in neighborhoods like this cars are covered. if you look at the streets, the neighborhoods that were plowed are narrow because there's so much snow there's not a lot of places to put it. everyone is digging out. this is video from salisbury township where neighbors were helping each other with shovels and snow blowers. we have to run for gas. >> reporter: elsewhere some neighborhoods didn't have all their streets plowed and inca the dog needed help the other than said she is disoriented because the snow has taken off. in the height of the blizzard some vehicles were left stranded on the boulevard. some shopping centers had heavy equipment, the challenge was keeping up with the snow and staying caffeinated to stay weak. we'll have 6 to 70 hours in

welcome back look at this awesome shot compliments of chopper 6 hd giving us a beautiful shot of philadelphia. 22.4 inches fell in philadelphia yesterday. making this the fourth biggest snowstorm in the city's history. the streets department is getting all the roads cleared, but don't shovel snow in the streets when digging out your car. astronaut scott kelly treated this picture as we were getting pounded on the ground

with record snow and shore flooding. he saw thunder snow and had the front-row seat for all the action. from space on the ground it's pretty to look at. >> reporter: let's get it you outside and show you what it it looks like out there. philadelphia international airport, 30-some inches of snow in parts of the area. folks are out there busy doing their best to he radio move the snow. make sure you drop sand or rock salt on the walks and sidewalks, as well. because we'll see a lot of freeze/refreeze taking place during the week with temperatures climbing above freezing. 29 degrees, dewpoint 12. wind out of the north/northwest at 16 miles per hour. the breeze makes it feel like 167 degrees. if you meant to enjoy an afternoon of sledding. you have to bundle up appropriately that's the key when you have a wind like that. lancaster, 23.

millville, 30, dover, 28. sea isle city, 30 degrees. feels like 17 down the shore, 18 in allentown. reading 16. poconos 10. feels like 17 degrees in philadelphia. satellite and real radar, you ce we're clear for the most part. the storm is 250 miles offshore. the winds shifted yesterday. part problem we had yesterday was the low was sitting here counter clockwise winds were pile the water onshore from sandy hook to the delaware bills. now we have a counter clockwise swirl now that the winds are owcht -- out of the northwest, this is an over shore flow for everybody, we won't see the high tides like yesterday morning. we put the wind barbs on there. satellite and radar this shows the winds out of the northwest

yesterday it was out of the of the east/southeast as the storm was heading up the eastern seaboard. the huge 20-foot waves are 250 miles out to sea, as well. the ocean is starting to calm down. future tracker 6, we'll set it in motion, look for mostly sunny skies, clouds from time to time. overnight tonight, partly cloudy. tomorrow morning, partly cloudier. temperatures are expected to get above freezing and crash monday night. we'll see the melting tames and refreeze -- takes place and refreeze tuesday, wednesday and thursday, windchills, very cold with the winds. 25 in philadelphia. 3:00 p.m., reading, 22, allentown, 24. tomorrow morning the windchills drop into the low to mid teens. it will be blustery and cold as you wait for the school bus. temperatures top out in the upper 20s, low 30s north and
