> good afternoon, it is big story on "action news" is the big cleanup from the weekend blizzard. we have a new look at the aftermath of the jersey shore, officials are just beginning to assess the flood damage and the beach erosion. for other parts of the region

this is a day to dig out from the snow. cars are buried and roads are slippery, and public transportation limited. crews were hard at work at overbrook high school in philadelphia. they are trying to clear the sidewalks so kids can go back to class tomorrow. we begin team coverage with annie mccormick in the fairmont section of philadelphia. still tough to get around the city streets. fairmont is looking like it's getting back to normal. it's the side streets that are residents are complaining about. dane shoe maker has had seen many people trying to get up the hill. he saw a limo in a bind he tried

to help. i'm assuming resources are spread thin this weekend trying to get people out. >> reporter: side streets looked neglected as residence tried to start the workweek two days after the record-breaking blizzard. riders and walkers needed extra time. i see a lot. >> reporter: the city of philadelphia worked overnight with the goal to get residents moving. in spring gardens they cleared walkways and in center city the plows tried to keep the major arteries clear. in mount airy, many have not cleared the snow off their cars yet and city plows made the trip on many secondary roads. in roxborough, city avenue was in great shape, but the no to --

notorious side streets were narrow with snow walls. how long did it take you? hours to dig this out. hours. >> reporter: and back out here live, not everybody is so patient as the people we're interviewed. we're hearing from people as we are standing here right now. the city does not have eyes and ears everywhere, that's why they need the public to let them know where the plows are needed by calling 311. annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." meanwhile, people who rely on public transportation were facing delays again this morning. septa trying to bring all the service back online. "action news" katherine scott is live at the 69th street terminal in upper darby with more on that. hi, cath -- katherine. >> reporter: hi rick there's been a lot of improvement since we went on the air this morning.

70% of the bus routes are running. there is improvement and they hope to see more later on today. i hope to get on the train. >> reporter: soon the first train road into paoli. many trains are operating with delays, but they are operating. delays can be expected all day and some trains are short cars. >> reporter: service was suspended between malvern and thorndale while amtrak worked to fix the switches. with all the snow that fell passengers were not expecting the commute to be easy. i have to go to surban station and walk 5 blocks up to 18th and spring garden. >> reporter: the walk will not be that fun. the walk takes ten minutes, i don't know what it will take today. >> reporter: septa has been monitoring conditions over the past few days. >> reporter: crews have used heavy equipment like this to clear the rails. over at 69th street

transportation center salt was being spread and snow remove efforts continued. early on a number of buses were not running. i had to get the 109 at back. there was a bus not another one until 12:00. we continue to open up the remaining routes as road conditions and parking issues permit. >> reporter: riders say the improvement is clear. yesterday i came down here it wasn't running because there was so much snow today it is running pretty good. i might take the bus more often this was really easy. >> reporter: as everybody heads to work this week, parking spaces are limited. they will be trucking snow out every night this week it could be an issue as the week wears on, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." thank you. the airlines are also trying to get back on track today, more than 12,000 flights

have been canceled since the storm began dumpingize and snow from the -- dumping ice and snow from the carolinas to new england. airport is operating today, but passengers should check with their airline before drive driving to the airport. we're beginning to understand the scope of the flooding at the jersey shore. the department of environmental protection will tour the shorepoints this afternoon. the action cam was in brigantine as crews shoveled debris pushed on the roads during high tide. some say they had wind damage they believe the water went higher in the back bays than during super-storm sandy. nasty, water ever where. i see a lot of damage, homes up and down the streets with water in them. it's almost as bad as the hurricane. we have way more debris.

it will be more difficult to clean it up this time. there's a lot of mud, i don't know i'm just devastated. >> reporter: beach erosion was visible from chopper 6 hd earlier today as it flew over the coastline. heavy equipment here was working on the sand. chopper 6 hd is live now over beach haven inlet along long beach island you can see heavy equipment move be the sand around, the storm battering areas of the coastline and doing damage to the sand and to the beaches there, so they are trying to do what they can to sure up the beaches, again to move the sand that was blown up against the houses in beach haven right on long beach island. and i felt -- a lot of communities had done beach replenishment that was down this weekend. nora muchanic will have more on the recovery efforts down at the

jersey shore this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. accuweather tracking a slight warmup this week which could help melt the snow. let's look live outside sky6 live hd showing us the have another temperature university camera. peaks of sunshine, but we are in for a bit of a break and we deserve it. meteorologist david murphy at the "action news" big board with the details. >> reporter: we are at the beginning of an improving pattern in temperature and weather conditions. as we take a look a few high clouds swinging through right now, but not enough to wipe out the sunshine. right now it's bright out there. as we look at the temperature profile, storm tracker 6 live double can we can see blues in our neck of the woods. this is the area where we've got temperatures in the 20s and 30s here. down here we're in the 40s and 50s. the general flow will be from the southwest the next couple of days with the frontal boundary pushing toward the east that is going to warm us up back in the

40s tomorrow and wednesday. as we look right now at temperatures we're not there quite yet. 36 degrees at noon, 34 in wilmington, 35 in allentown. we'll add another degree or two to that before we're done. wind speeds very light. this is part of the improvement. it doesn't feel all that bad out there, it's cold, certainly, but not that bad. we're going for a high of 36. since we're already there we'll hit 37, 38 before we are done. tonight's overnight low is below freezing and we have a continued concern about melting snow during the daytime and refreeze at night. if you have sidewalks that take on the water and get that freeze if you salted them yesterday go outside and hit them again sometime this evening. we'll be back with the better numbers in the seven seven-day forecast coming up. the pennsylvania turnpike finally reopened after five hundred vehicles were stranded in the snow. cars, trucks and buses got stuck

friday evening. temple university gymnastic squad and duquesne basketball team were among those trapped. national guard brought them food and water until traffic started moving yesterday. the turnpike ceo promises an extensive review of the situation and the response. police say slippery conditions are the blame for a crash on i-95 this morning. it happened at 6:00 a.m. new northeast philadelphia. a driver lost control and hit a snow mound in the northbound lanes near academy road. the vehicle came to rest at the guardrail. the driver was taken to the local hospital and did not threaten life-threaten injuries. fall out from the drinking water crisis in michigan. this can be a piece of the missing malaysia airline plane. today experts are checking out this debris that washed ashore.

michigan's attorney general just announced there will be an independent investigation into the flint water crisis led by an

ex-prosecutor detroit's former fbi chief. the problem began in 2014 when the city started drawing water from the flint river to save money. the water was not propertily treated to prevent lead pipes from leaking into the supply. residents are under to use bottled water. isis released a new propaganda video that purports to show nine of the ten men in the terror attack in paris that killed 130 people. it shows images of british prime minister david camera --eron saying britain could be the next target. a piece of plane thought to be the missing malaysia plane.

experts say it's too early to tell. dozens of people are recovering after an american airline flight turbulence. the flight was on its way from ma am -- miami to milan, italy. all the injured people were seated in the back of the plane. i'm happy to be alive. i was scared. i was praying the whole time, it was very scary. that flight is scheduled to leave for milan at 8:00 p.m. tonight. two destructive wild fires in california have a price tag. officials say it topped a billion dollars for insured losses. the massive fires broke out in september killing 6 and destroying 1300 homes. these are some of the costliest

japanese air bag maker takata is facing more trouble today. a 10th death has been linked to the faulty air bags. five million vehicles have been added to the list. 19 million were under recall. the shares plunged this morning, the company released a same time offering condolences to the victim's family. they are facing a lawsuit in the u.s. justice department investigation. there's a shake up at twitter. four executives are leaving the company that includes the vice president of social media. the ceo confirmed the news.

the company has seen a slow down oampt last two years. they are trying to catch up with facebook in it's 1.5 billion users. it may lift the 140 character limit to make the service more appealing to a wider audience. mcdonald's breakfast is getting a boost. this is the second quarter of growth as it fights back to win customers. they admit they failed to keep up with changing tastes. the new ceo is working on a turn around since he took over last spring. a closely watched lawsuit against big tobacco is being heard by a federal jury. a group of american smokers suing philip morris making a defective cigarette. they want the maker to pay for

battered parts of the new jersey shore. the huge waves stripped the beaches of sand there was widespread destructive flooding all kinds of debris washed ashore. i'm not sure what's on the beach right. we did see heavy equipment. they just had a beach replenishment project in ocean city. they moved in construction equipment. some of that was undone by the storm last weekend. the lieutenant governor and the commissioner of environment protection plan to visit toms river holgate, stone harbor and north wildwood today to assess the damage there along the jersey shore. some of them saying it rivaled or exceeded that of super-storm sandy. i remember we saw a buoy that washed up along the shore over the weekend. nora muchanic taking pictures of it. back here on monday afternoon, we're digging out and david murphy says a little sunshine

will help. >> reporter: sunshine will help, but the flood waters we creeded down the shore -- receded down the shore. in some cases it was higher than sandy. storm tracker 6 live showing we are dry as we head outside. we're looking at the action cam a little earlier in fairmont park, careful, there's snow on the sidewalk, maybe an icy patch. i excess that exerciser there has good shoes and doesn't have to worry too much. 36 degrees in philadelphia. the winds are calm for the most part. windchills 36. you put together slacking winds and those temperatures and it's pretty much the same number we're talking about. 35 degrees in trenton. 34 in wilmington, 35 in allentown. 34 in millville. 36 in cape may. not much wind expected the rest of the afternoon. still getting a fair amount of sunshine, even though the clouds are getting thicker. most of these are high and thin enough to allow sunshine through the for the rest of the day. in the lehigh valley that will give you a sun and clouds mix, a

cold high of 35. not very wind in terms of temperatures in the 30s you can take this better if you could if it were if it was blustery. that's not to say it isn't coat weather, it is you'll want gloves and extra gear if you're out. sun and clouds not much windy at the shore. 38. in philadelphia we'll go for a high of 37 or so. could go a degree or two higher than that. winds are light, 3 to 6 miles per hour. for the evening commute looks like we'll have sun mixing with clouds by 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. the numbers will get close to freezing by 5 and below freezing by 6 and look at refreezing and melted snow on surfaces that are not retreated. overnight tonight, partly cloudy dropping down to 28 in philadelphia. some suburbs in the low 20s. not as cold as last night, but cold enough for the refreeze.

tomorrow we start out with sunshine, but it should cloud up as we go through the day, it will be dry in the early afternoon. here comes the clouds. the latest model run shows a blip of precipitation, we have to allow for a spotty shower popping up here or there. it will be rain if it happens not snow. we'll be mild. we'll be above freezing well above it tuesday and wednesday, but that melting will be combined within most cases temperatures below freezing and black ice reforming day after day or morning after morning. 34 today, cold, 43 tomorrow, cloudy mild a sprinkle or shower late in the day or at night. wednesday, morning fog, a fairly mild high of 40. we're below average on thursday,
