the suburbs, the task is the same. dig out from 25 inches of snow. it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is the big clean-up from the blizzard of 2016. and parents and kids have one thing on their minds tonight, and so here it is. all philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools will be closed for the second day in a row tomorrow. many suburban districts also closed or opening with delays. and we have those detail scrolling across the bottom of your screen throughout this boast and always at 6abc.com. we have the latest information from meteorologist cecily tynan and christie standing by in chester down -- county. and chad pradelli is live in manayunk. always a night.

>> on baldwin street it is still snow-covered. and huge mounds of snow in the roadway, tonight residents were out with shovels trying to clear what they could. mountains of snow nearly three feet high. tempers elevated. >> no, no, no. >> here in the 6600 block, neighbors were close to blows. they're stuck and frustrated. >> i call the cops on them. they were standing out here with shovels getting ready to swing at each other. >> why are they fighting? >> a few people got their cars out and made a little space, and they weren't considerate of others to move the cars so they could pull it out. >> mayfair to south philly, small side streets look like this. and people trying to reserve parking lots with chairs and

recycling bins and people are fed up. >> it has been a disaster. you can't get anywhere. >> this was an epic storm. crews are blurry-eyed working around the clock to clear roads. most residents commend their work in the city urging people to be patient. >> we appreciate your patience. we're getting to your streets. we have to take care of the big ones first to get everything rolling that affects the most number of people, but we haven't forgotten you and we are coming or already there. >> if it stays this way for a couple of more days, what are you going to do? >> i don't know, guess some snowshoes. >> and the city says that if you live on a street what has not yet been plowed call the 311 traffic center. and tomorrow trash collection resumes. >> thank you, chad. where does all the snow go? the city is using several methods, but tons of it dumped in a parking lot at broad and washington.

front-end loaders fill dump truck after dump truck worth of snow. and flying over the lot to give you a scale of how much snow there is. this is 7th and popular in north philadelphia tonight and mostly clear, if somewhat icy street. what makes this so surprising and worthy of our attention? this is what it looked like hours ago. an enormous snow mound blocking off the entire intersection, baffling neighbors and drivers. and city officials told "action news" they didn't know who bumped the snow there. but tonight, just as mysteriously somebody moved the mountains to clean it up. the philadelphia streets department has yet to return our call to find out if they're the one whose deserve the credit. "action news" reporter touring the suburbs tonight, and she is now life in devin. and what have you seen on your travels tonight? >> either seeing mounds of snow piling up from people who actually have been able to dig

out, or frustrated residents snowed in who haven't left their home for days. talk about being snowed in, literally. >> it is 48 hours since snow stopped falling. this is kind of ridiculous. >> trucks struggled to dig people out of this apartment complex monday night. >> we haven't had a single pass by a plow in three days. >> the same story in phoenixville. reed street functioning like an alley but residents say it is a designated borough road that half of the block parks their cars on. and heidi hasn't left her home since the weekend storm. >> we need to go to work, we need to get milk. simple things like that. we just can't dig to the end of the alley. >> i still have all of this to do. >> has not finished shovel his driveway. it is not all headaches as the kids make the best of the snow

day. >> just sledding, falling and face-planting. >> drexel hill they get creative with the melting man cave. and drivers are left to compete with mounds of snow lining streets and shopping centers. >> i don't think the car was seeing me turning and they almost come out. they saw me last minute and stop. >> and are you hoping it will be cleared out? >> after 48 hours i am not hoping for anything. >> be patient, what the official and residence owners are asking people to have as they tackled snow-covered streets. >> thank you. at the jersey shore, beaches battered by sandy took another hit from this blizzard. state officials are dealing with major beach erosion. in holgate they will dump 600 truck loads of sand to shore up

the dunes. north wildwood some families trying to salvage belongings after water seeped in. >> we moved our three cars on high land, which we thought was high land, and we have a dodge vipor, infinity and town car and they all got water. >> and removing debris from the sea and docks, and used rakes and bulldozers to move it away. and chris christie returned to the campaign trail in new hampshire. the question of why he wasn't in his home state came up several times at a diner in greenland he brushed off those concerns saying floodwaters receded and the storm wasn't that severe. >> no, they really aren't all that bad. relatively minor stuff. but the water yesterday morning, people are doing fine. at a town hall event later

christie told a student who grew up in new jersey that there was little for him to do back home asking "do you want me to go down there with a mop?" . in lehigh valley, snow complicating the snow removal process. and they poured every piece of equipment into the streets and are now asking for help from private contractors. allentown schools remain closed tomorrow and bus official also decide tomorrow morning if they will resume service. the delaware river crusted over with snow at trenton. looking out from the banks in bucks county it seems like a straight stretch all the way to the new jersey statehouse. many side streets in the capital city are snowed in with drivers getting stuck attempting to navigate the roads. a lot of concern about a pattern of thawing and refreezing throughout the rest

of the week. and cecily tynan live at the "action news" big board with more on that. >> jim, really the problem is the falling temperatures. temperatures already dropped at orably -- or below freezing and they will expand across south jersey and delaware. and tomorrow morning below freezing, use caution. a lot of sidewalks and driveways will be icy. and another thing to note, that we could see some patchy fog. and that means the temperatures below freezing, that those water droplets can create another icy glaze. do be careful. where you see the fog there could be additional icing. with black ice, street anything that looks wet as ice. we will be getting into the big cycle of that melting during the day and the refreezing at night because temperatures really rising well above freezing most of the day this week. tuesday, 11 degrees above freezing.

wednesday, 10 degrees above. taking a bit of a hit on thursday, 5 degrees above and friday back to 7 degrees above freezing. most nights below freezing and that's where we get the pattern. as we look ahead through the week, a lot of areas of black ice. and also tracking showers on the way tomorrow. details on that. a lot of people ask meeting about a coastal storm over the weekend. and i will talk about that, the track in the full accuweather forecast. jim? >> thank you, cecily. "action news" launched drone 6 to bring us another aerial view of the snow-capped roofs. this is fidler square and center city. and above geno's steaks and on to the skyline, fun to be head. drone 6 flew over the dog parks at schuylkill river park and kids using the day off of school to sled down the hills.

and the fun continued well into the evening, like here at stokes hill in morristown, new jersey. along the 200 block of east main street. youngsters found all methods of sliding from sleds to plastic disks, tubes and even snowboards. of course, at least part of the fun of sledding, trudging back up hill for another run. septa says the majority of mass transit service is back on track after the storm. the riders shouldn't be surprised by delays. more than 70% of city and suburban bus and trolley routes are in operation with some detours. the norristown high speed line only between bryn mawr and 69th street transportation center. regional rails on a we can day schedule delays up to 45 minutes. septa says parking spaces at the stations are limited since many are still buried under piles of snow. a live look at philadelphia international airport where

it happened tonight in wilmington. fire attacked a three-story apartment building. at 7:45 in the 500 block of rodney street. five units damaged, six residents need housing help. one firefighter suffered a minor injury after a slip and fall. no word yet on what sparked the blaze. the aftermath of 4200 gallons of home heating oil spilled into the schuylkill river. james lewis snapped these photographs near 24th and chestnut on saturday. the philadelphia water department says it quickly closed off the drinking water in-take valve and the oil poses no health risk. the coast guard is working to clean up the spill. young children discovered a woman's body in the snow in northern new jersey. officials say it happened this afternoon around 3:00 as the middle school children were getting off the school bus. they notice the a winter coat

peeking out out of the snow and they called police. >> my other neighbors went up and we were all scared and she kind of poked here and she moved a little bit of snow and she said she is definitely a person. >> investigators say the 64-year-old woman shovelling her driveway saturday when when she collapsed and was buried in the blizzard. they say she still had a shovel in her hand. there have been at least 38 storm-relate the deaths across the united states, including four in pennsylvania, four in new jersey, and one in delaware. atlantic city's borgata casino can legally tell the cocktail waitresses how much they can weigh. two of the so-called borgata babes fired under the policy that led to the lawsuit. and the counts us sided with the casino, and now the supreme court denying a request for review, the case is settled.

♪ the political front we are now one week from the iowa caucuses. on the democratic side, both hillary clinton and bernie sanders are campaigning at a furious pace. sanders made an emotional appeal on behalf of the millions of americans living in poverty today. clinton touted her experience and judgment, offering herself as a pragmatic option to build on the obama legacy. and the republicans race, donald trump took to twitter today to call senator ted cruz a nervous wreck who is dropping like a rock. cruz told an audience in manchester, iowa that he will not engage in assaults and personal attacks. but a cruz television ad lashing out at trump over his business practices. >> and a new element in the presidential campaign, word that mayor michael bloomberg may enter the race as an independent. rick williams in des moines for the iowa caucuses and watching

for his reports beginning thursday night on "action news" at 11:00. a grand jury in texas has cleared planned parenthood of wrong doing over the controversial videos, appearing to suggest that planned parenthood was illegally selling fetal tissues and organs of aborted babies. instead they indicted the two activisted behind the videos. and the search for three inmates escaping from an orange county jail on friday. they cut through a plate, crawled through unsecured pluming and rappelled using sheets. gone hours before anybody noticed they were missing. detectives looking whether they had help from someone within the sheriff's department. "healthcheck" at 11:00, the world health organization saying a virus that can affect birth defects spedding everywhere

except canada and chile. the chikungunya virus spread by a particular kind of mosquito, not person-to-person. the virus only confirmed to arrived from the americas last may. brazilian officials say it is associated with a recent wave of birth defects and were officials cautioned pregnant woman traveling to companies mostly in the caribbean and latin america. the symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. so we all have to watch out for that particular virus. let's get the accuweather forecast from cecily tynan. >> and falling temperatures the concern. and the action cam tonight, the rittenhouse square you see that they have shovelled some paths, but could be standing water that

could refreeze overnight. any slush, any wet, untreated surfaces are going to get icy. this is why temperatures now 32 in philadelphia, but allentown with the deep snowpack already dropped down to 19 degrees. trenton 26. wilmington 27. millville 39. sea isle city currently 40 degrees. satellite 6 and action radar showing we are beginning to see some clouds drifting in out of the west. this is associated with the system that will be pulling through tomorrow. there are some snow showers north of chicago. it's not very organized. that actual low will be heading up to the north. what we will get is a front passing through. you can see not a lot of organized precipitation. won't be here for the morning rush. the morning rush, lots of clouds, areas of black ice. do be careful. at 6:00, 28. by 8:00, 31 degrees. heading into the afternoon we will see a little bit of shower activity. not widespread. futuretracker showing around 3:30 a thin band of some

showers. temperatures in the 40's. so the melting continues as we head into wednesday morning. tuesday night, lots of clouds. wednesday morning could have a few showers along the shore. but then by wednesday afternoon the sunshine is back. and again, temperatures around 40 degrees. that will really lead to the melting. getting a lot of questions from social media on twitter and facebook. what about this possible coastal storm on friday? here's the set-up. high pressure to the north. two pieces of energy. one low pressure off the southeast coast, another clipper moving in from the great lakes. it looks like the two low pressures will not be phasing until the paths and latitude, the latest track a pretty good consensus this will track offshore. but it's close enough that i will be watching this to see if the track moves a little to the west. if it does, the best chance of any snow would be across coastal new jersey and delaware. and it doesn't look like we'll getting a direct hit by the system. if it moved to the west it would

really affect southern new england. the seven-day forecast spotty shores tomorrow afternoon. 43. and wednesday afternoon sunshine 42, thursday cooler but above freezing during the day, 37 degrees. friday, watching the coast, watching the storm head out to sea, 39. look at the weekend, it's going to be mild on saturday, 42. sunday, 47. and clouds roll in monday. it looks like we make a run at 49 degrees. temperatures right into the weekend overnight below freezing. do be careful. and i have to correct myself. >> oh, oh. >> "action news" at 6:00. >> have you never been wrong before. >> i was wrong about this. i told viewers to put down rock salt and i had a lot of pet owners tell me you don't do that, it is so bad for the pads of dogs and cats. and it gets ingested so you have to use a pet-friendly de-icer. my husband said why did you say that? we use pet safe. don't use rock salt, it is bad

for animals. the philadelphia residents tired of waiting for a snowplow took it in their hands. in southwest philadelphia, shovelling the entire block by themselves. they got tired of waiting for a plow. residents in the area say they are especially grateful.
