cleanup crews after the blizzard of 2016. philadelphia public schools will resume class tomorrow, that is one hint that life in the delaware valley will get back to normal soon. sara bloomquist is live with the details. >> rick and monica, you can see this is leopard street still snow covered this afternoon, we are making considerable progress and we even see some sunshine today and trafficking getting through some of these smaller streets and meantime the city of philadelphia is keeping up tds efforts try to get to all the residential streets. >> here in port richmond some roads are still covered in snow and while they are still passable some are down to one lane and making room for another car could mean getting stuck on the side exactly what happened here. stan was among those that jumped in to help. >> not bad for a 61-year-old guy

retired and shoveling snow. that is the problem, you have to get the plow down here and get close to the cars. >> 80% of roads are passable but some need work before the pavement is visible again, they remind people not to put the snow in the street. >> we live in florida now and we justw down for the week. >> they piled it back up and we are back here working trying to get the cars right back out. >> the streets are covered with an icy coating and the warmer temperatures are melting it away and they want residents to cleaver storm drains so it has somewhere to go. and the people in philadelphia are ready for the snow to be

gone. >> we have people working in nursing homes and everything like that, it's been real rough. >> back here live, you can see the water and the city is asking people to clear away the storm drains, it has to have somewhere to go, i'm walking up here because the car is coming, if your street is still snow covered and you have not yet seen a plow, the city is asking you call 311 and be specific about the circumstances on your street. is it still snow covered or is it slush or icy, that will help determine the type of equipment you get on your block. i'm sara bloomquist, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you sara. well as city crews continue the cleanup progress --

meanwhile, icy roads are a concern tonight. several crashes on i-78 in berks county caused the interstate to close in both directions and a warning from governor wolf prompted drivers statewide to be careful behind the world. whether or not those concerns continue depends on mother nature. cecily tynan is here with more for our week ahead. >> we have possibility of icing in the northwest suburbs later on tonight but right now temperatures are on the mild side and a good melting happening. currently philadelphia is balmy, 48 degrees, very warm for january standards and atlantic city airport 50 and allentown well above freezing 40 degrees and wilmington 46 and trenton 46 degrees. satellite 6 along with action radar showing we do have a weak front that is moving through right now, it is producing a few light showers and nothing heavy enough to wash the grime off your car unfortunately.

we'll get a few showers live double scan live radar zooming in and the constration is over doylestown and this pushes to the east in the overnight hours. as we head through the week, continued melting and temperatures in the 40s and 50s and the coastal storm looks to be out to sea and no big storms on the horizon. we have all the details coming up later on. >> thank you cecily. meantime from our new jersey newsroom. governor chris christie pol guidesed to the mayor of cape may. >> i heard one crazy mayor in south jersey say this is worse flooding than sandy. his town didn't get hit by sandy. >> christie made that remark in new hampshire talking about the blizzard and today he went back on his word, saying he apologized to the mayor

personally. >> i slept on it and i woke up and did not feel good about what i said about him. so i called to apologize to him and the fact is, he was very gracious in accepting it and we worked together and continue to work together and we move on from here. >> the action cam was in nearby west wild where senator bob mendez and cory booker toured the area. residents are still trying to repair their water logged belongings and cape may county is asking for a declaration disaster to help those that received flooding. chris christie is still evaluating that to see if they qual for that. and there could be a bright spot ahead for atlantic city's financial future. the plan gives the state a bigger role in restructuring atlantic city's finances and

debt and dann cuellar has more on the developments tonight at 6:00. it's the downward trend keeping your wallet a little fuller, gas prices are down for this year and winter is as good a time as any to take advantage of the trend. j jeff jericho is live with more. >> reporter: 2004 was the last time the philadelphia region saw the average price for a gallon of regular below $2 and you may see individual stations shattering the price and the 12 year record may soon be broken and drivers are not complaining. >> the last time i saw this soda was 50 cents a can. >> he cannot always afford to fill up his gas guzzling suv.

>> $5 bucks now gets me almost three gallons of gas, it takes me a lot farther now. >> i love it. absolutely love it. having a great winter because of the gas prices, in new jersey that recently saw prices drop below $2, we saw gas for $1.69 in atlantic city. and delaware $1.77 and the philadelphia five county area, the average sits above $2 at $2.04 down 16 cents from last month. >> but a little hunting and you can find gas below $2 like at this costco in glen mills. >> when was the last time you saw gas this price in philadelphia? >> a long time. >> the regional average will likely drop below $2 as the cost of crude continues to fall along with demand. >> they are oversupplied and this time of year demand is

to passyunk toward broad street, that is where they have a lane blocked for the snow removal efforts. westbound 76 extra traffic from the conshohocken curve to 202. a couple of crashes in the bu burbs. in west bradford west bailey road and one in delco along 352, and a spinout accident in mount laurel, burlington county is blocking the ramp from 38 and delays on the septa regional rails, about six of the septa bus routes remain suspended because of the storm. >> we'll talk more about the cleanup in the next half hour. >> thank you. more ahead on "action news" tonight, reports of shots at a naval medical center in san diego sent people into panic and lockdowns. they say it was justified even

medical center in san diego found no signs of a gunman or shooting, reports of shots fired caused panic leading to the shut downer of the medical center and nearby schools, they guised people inside to run, hide or fight. crews searched the building room by room andicials say it was justified. 42 deaths are blamed on the histor histor historic blizzard and for a second day the medical center was up to operational, and several stations remained closed and baltimore which got more than two feet of snow, plenty of people were still freeing this cars and many side streets remain unplowed.

cecily tynan at the big board. >> that was right on the money. >> wacky weather. >> it has been wacky lately. we are calming things down live on sky 6 hd where the skiers and snowboarders are out enjoying the fresh snow, they were waiting all season for mother nature to supply some snow. and if you look at these stats, the past two decades we have a lot of foot plus snow storms, if you go back all the records, the past two decades we have a total of three snow storms of more than a foot. the 1990s and 1980s, we had only one snow storm of more than a foot so the atmosphere is ramping up likely due to climate change. we have a front pulling through and there is a cold front and a broken line of showers along with it. really no heavy rain and light

showers, and it pushes to the east and this drops temperatures a little bit tomorrow and we are taking a walk on the mild side, down from our high of 50 and atlantic city airport 50 and northwest suburbs 40 in allentown and mt. pocono 44 and a big change from yesterday, temperatures running 9 degrees warmer in philadelphia and 15 warmer in millville and the poconos tomorrow temperatures drop back into the low 40s behind this front and then we'll begin to warm up as we head through the weekend. tonight be careful the northwest suburbs, temperatures drop down below freezing and there could be black ice and philadelphia forecasting a low of 35, and the air temperature could be above freezing and the surface could drop to around the freezing point, just street anything that looks wet as ice and you'll be

happening on "action news" tonight, philadelphia police need your help to catch a thief that held up a cell phone store with a gun. the philadelphia eagles and tight end brent celek agreed to a new contract and penndot has a new way to get rid of snow, look how it is clearing up our local streets. our area continues to dig out from this weekend's blizzard. one of the highest totals was in the lehigh valley. walter perez is live there. >> reporter: you simply have to see this. somewhere buried beneath all of this snow is green street in allentown. the people that live here have taken the snow off their vehicles but clearly the plows have not reached this part of town so as the snow stopped falling this weekend the blizzard effects are still being felt. >> eugene with help from his

neighbo neighbors removed the snow that encased his car but his roadway looks like an avalanche hit. there is only one way to describe the situation. >> we have a problem, i am suppose to go to the doctor on wednesday, but i canceled it. >> reporter: snow is being dumped on the out skirts of town and getting around by car is no picnic but going on foot can be difficult. rose says it almost feels like she is under house arrest. >> we have gone nowhere, it has been shoveling and helping everybody else shovel and you come out a little bit and you can only shovel so much, there

is so much snow you know what i mean. >> as the road crews continue to work around the clock, the city officials continue to ask the people of allentown to be patient. >> whatever is necessary we'll do it with our pieces of equipment, it's going to take time to get to everything in allentown, we are not talking hours we are talking days. >> reporter: heart back out live, we can report that the bus service is restored to snow detour routes and allentown schools are closed one again for the third straight day. walter perez channel 6 "action news." a water center in allentown is criticized after people were asked to leave during the snow storm saturday and the people say that the warming station is not staffed during the day, so some churches kept their doors

open so the homeless would have a place to go. penndot is putting a new machine to work. it's called a belt loader, as the name implies it scoops up the snow and shoots it up on to a belt and into trucks. it only takes a few minutes and is usually used to cut road shoulders. and the city snow removal operation continues at full force. 80% of the city's roads are passable. but because this storm dumped the fourth largest snow amount in the city, there is still work to be done. the street of cantrell has work to be done and it was where mayor kenney grew up, but they are not getting special treatment. for more on how the weather will impact you check out 6abc.com/weather, you can see what our meteorologists are tracking next and get the latest

information. in other news police are looking for a man accused of robbing a drug store, he is seen walking into the rite-aid along north 5th street in olney, with a customer behind him the man demanded money and threatened to kill the 18-year-old cashier and she did give up the cash. if you see the man call police. a suspected robber walked into a verizon store with a suitcase with a hidden weapon in it. he did point a gun at the workers here at the 300 block of spring garden street and liberty. the man allegedly stole tablets and cell phones during the mid-day heist on january 17th, he had a white design on his sweatshirt, if you recognize that call police. the philadelphia water department is making repairs to a water main that broke early this morning in rhawnhurst. a section of the road actually

caved in. two cars parked on the snow covered street also flooded and 60 properties are without water tonight and we are told that the water should be back on later this evening. firefighters are trying to determine what caused an early morning blaze that damaged a commercial business and apartments in south philadelphia. it started just after 4:00 at the intersection of 120th and bainbridge street. crew as arrived to heavy smoke showing on the first floor of the property. everybody got out safely. the possible removal of attorney general, kathleen kane, got underway today. they could make possible recommendations about her impeachment. she is facing charges and the state suspended her law license. turning to politics.
